...when a full size machine is too much like hard work to dig out.ooOooEDIT : January 6th 2016What a little star on 12th Night! It quickly cleaned up two rooms of tinsel & glitter remnants after the decorations were taken down and boxed up...with that little crevice extender tool getting into little nooks & crannies like skirting board indentations. It was also great in the car, cleaning up soil from a hanging basket and generally around the base of the seats...without the need to worry about a flex being plugged in somewhere of suitable distance.ooOoo✩ ‘H85-GA-B10✩ VAX® GATOR10.8V ~ HANDHELD FOR INDOOR USE ONLY✩ CORDLESS CONVENIENCE FOR EVERYDAY CLEAN UPS✩ FOR DRY DEBRIS ONLY – NOT TO BE USEDON WET SURFACES’COLOUR : WHITE with ORANGE & see-through dust collection areaNestling inside a box measuring around 37 cm x 16.5 cm x 14 cm is this very handy little vax, which easily made light work of the unbelievable mess from glitter-clad crackers several times over the festive break. It comes simply with a charger and a well-laid out, multi-model instruction leaflet. The neat machine measures around 32 cm in length : 37.75 cm with the crevice extender fully extended. It is recommended to charge for 24 hours, initially, and it is simply plug in the charger and leave, straight out of the box.The orangey-red charging light goes out when it reaches full charge. It is easy to switch on by sliding the on/off button with the thumb. In use, it is not terribly noisy and the streamlined shape gets in where others fail, and is particularly useful to get under radiators and into the edges on the stairs with the orange extender out until it locks otherwise it doesn’t take much pressure for this to retract.I also find this cordless vax useful for whizzing around the bathroom surfaces, swishing away stray hairs with ease, and it is a pleasant enough colour combination to have sitting around on a shelf in that area in readiness. It is advertised as having a 15-minute runtime on full charge, but I haven’t had the need to test this to the fullest and tend to pop it back on charge as soon as I switch it off in readiness for the next 'accident'.It is easy to see when it needs an empty, never the most pleasant of jobs with bagless machines. The two orange buttons on the bottom click to lift the nose and then simply release the filter. It does need a bit of a brush off to clear dust & hair, and it is very useful that the filter is washable. It is just as easy to put back together with reassuring clicks. The machine comes simply with the charger unit with around 1.75 m of flex, plus UK plug, which is plenty to place it on the floor from a wall socket in my abodes. From the box:‘You can rinse this filter. So that it lasts longer. (40°C max)For best performance, regularly wash the filter.’• 2 year guarantee (registration required)

This is a handy little dustbuster-style mini vacuum. It doesn't have the battery life, the suction oomph or the storage capacity to work as a 'proper' vacuum around your house, but as a handy thing to have on-hand for a quick bit of sweeping up, it definitely has its place. It's quite lightweight- my scales say that it weighs just under 1.2Kg, and since the handle is very sensibly shaped and the on-off switch is perfectly situated for your thumb, that means you can operate it one-handedly without any real challenges. Although there is a more powerful model in the same range, 10.8v is enough to lift crumbs or fluff out of a carpet. The transparent storage area makes it easy to see if you've accidentally picked up something you didn't want to pick up too.Emptying the 'bag' is almost but not quite a one-handed operation too, so the overall ergonomics are pretty good. You're supposed to charge it for 24 hours before you use it first, which seems rather a lot considering that it only gives you about 15 minutes of charge. That's one of the main reasons why this is better described as an occasional use item rather than something you could vacuum a whole room with. It's a little short on the accessories front, to put it mildly since there are none. There's an AC charger (19V which is useful, so best not lose it or damage it as it might be tricky to replace), and that's it. Since it's function is so simple, you don't really need an army of tiny plastic bolt-on pieces to store or lose, so personally I think it's good that they haven't over-complicated it.The two best uses for this, to me, are either (1) sweeping up the debris around our baby boy's highchair after he's finished 'eating' (his eating currently involves the food ending up in equal thirds- a third in his mouth, a third on his face, the other third on the floor), or (2) giving your car interior a bit of a tidy-up. If it's a short job, and you don't want to bother taking the whole big vacuum cleaner out, it's well-suited.

I bought the Vax Gator after seeing a selection of models reviewed on a TV show. It seemed well priced and effective compared to the others. It has a sturdy feel. The front springs opens like a jaw to empty the dirt caddy, and the whole 'face' detaches to access the filter. A nozzle extends from the front for better access to corners and crevices, which is a nice feature. The suction is good enough to pick up crumbs and debris on a sofa or carpet, but it can't compare to a full-size vacuum if the dirt is ground in.The battery life seems good, it has been mainly used in 1-3 minute bursts around the house a couple of times each day and sometimes doesn't get plugged in to charge, there has never been a sign that it is running out of juice. It takes a long time to charge when it is low, when you unbox the product expect to charge it for 24 hours before the first use. Other comments about battery life may be because the unit was charged only a few hours before the first use.The capacity is small, and when it is used for dusty jobs the power can reduce a lot as the filter clogs up, but the filter is easily cleaned in a few seconds with some warm soapy water and full power is restored. The design means that dust bunnies can form and need to be emptied by hand because they cling to the filter. This is possibly the worst aspect of the vacuum, but this is also a common problem with most bagless vacuums. This wouldn't be suitable to deep-clean a car, or to remove a lot of pet hair, or as the main vacuum except in a small tidy flat, because it would need to be emptied and cleaned too frequently. It would be great as a maintenance vacuum for a family car, quickly going over the sofa before the in-laws arrive, or those jobs around the house where you might use a dustpan and brush. My partner loves using it on the stairs as part of the cleaning routine rather than the struggling with the heavy cylinder, and the convenience encourages a "clean-as-you-go" attitude.

I bought Vax because my dad in the 70s-90s was an MEB electrician who repaired thier products for a living. And our Vax at home that he bought after going on the training course survived 30 years of use! Even that of a boy who vacuumed the house weekly for years beating it with anything he could all in the hope it would fail and he could get out of the house work (it even "fell" down the stairs a few times). Anyway that product was amazing so after soooo much nagging from the wife that she wanted a little vacuum for the stairs/cars/insert others reasons here, I gave in and agreed we needed one. Now I cannot complain my wife does an amazing job of looking after the house which is lived in by 2 very messy girls and we'll a very very messy me.I of cause after being tramatised by having to vacuum once a week as a child won't go near one now but I do know that in the past VAX made very good products, and this fit the bill perfectly. Now in 30 years I was pretty sure that Vax would change as a company and there quality had probably gone down and I wouldn't suggest giving this to a teenage boy to throw down the stairs. But it is a great product, not like the cheep and tacky small vacuumes I've come across in the past. It charges quickly, actually has a good amount of suction, isn't too heavy or difficult to use in tight areas and don't tell my mum but I've used it quite a bit both for the car, following children who are "eating" and yes, even vacuuming the stairs! If I have to have a small vacuum then this is it, and if I could have for my 30 year old hand me down Vax fixed I'd even still be using that instead of the expensive rubbish we bought to replace it.

Amazon are currently selling this this for £29.99 (as opposed to the RRP £49.99) and at that price it is an excellent entry level cordless handheld cleaner. You get around 15 minutes runtime when fully charged and I find this plenty of time to use to clean the car. I also use it to clean the stairs, under the sofas and sometimes the edges of the rooms in the house (those areas that a regular vacuum cleaner will struggle with unless you use attachments). My previous Vax had a charging plate however, this one charges through a regular cable. To be honest I'm not sure what I prefer. I never ever mounted the plate so it was a bit of a waste of time and this one having just a regular cord makes moresense to be but those who like having a wall mounted charging plate may be a little disappointed. It's got 10.8 volts of power. You might want to consider paying a bit more and getting a more powerful model. It really depends upon your circumstances. For instance if you have a pet that regularly sheds hair then I'd suggest going for a more expensive model as this one struggled with the back seat of my car where a friends dog has been and was littered with stubborn hairs.Overall, I'm really impressed. It's lightweight, easy to use and easy to empty (you just open the open and empty the contents into the bin). It comes with a user guide but to be honest I happily figured it out by myself. For an entry level cleaner it's excellent and I can find no fault. But do check out a more powerful model like the 18v rather than this 10.8v if you have pets as this will struggle a bit with some pet hairs.

A great little vac in pleasing blue and clear plastic colour livery. The normal low power battery doesn’t last that long and I've bought an expensive back up hi-power battery. The crevice nozzle has a poor design fault; the end of the nozzle has 2 slots either side which weakens the upper slightly longer section of the nozzle which has now snapped off. If the two unnecessary slots were not there the nozzle end would be much stronger, They have now replaced the nozzle under the 2 year manufacturer’s warranty, but it will break again!!! The question is why are they there in the first place? Also there are a couple of mystifying wires running the length on the top of the dust collector body with 2 contacts at the end that appear to serve no useful purpose, also 2 more contacts on the main body and 3 more contacts on the back why? Did the Research & Development and marketing guys have second thoughts about a possible dual purpose for this vac? Overall this handheld vac works very well albeit quite expensive at rrp £129, but I’m pleased I bought it and use it every day. I like it so much that have ordered another on to use in a different part of the housed. I have two other Vax vacuum cleaners and they are the best I have ever used. I would have bought a Dyson but for their incredible price tag, given they are now made in China they should be cheaper and I don’t believe they would perform any better than a Vax product. While I'm sure there are more expensive models having mighty suction available from other manufacturers, this little VAX has more than enough power to satisfy my needs despite being priced at the 'budget' end of the scale. Build quality is good, it feels a solid and business-like piece of kit. Placing a hand over the nozzle reveals plenty of vacuum and I especially like the 'Gator' croc-like opening dust container which facilitates emptying after the latest clean-up. Previous models I've owned have always required the whole front and filter to be removed. This is still possible for the VAX when the filter becomes clogged, but is not necessary routinely. Quite a solid machine which suggests a proper battery and motor inside, persons with weak or tiny hands might find it a little heavy or cumbersome... not so in my case, it's fine. Many such hand-vacs have wall-mounted recharging stations, this is convenient but can result in accidental over-charging and consequent battery damage. The VAX has just a simple power-in socket and its own 3-pin charger / lead, This means that the VAX storage has to be on a shelf and its charger stored somewhere convenient and accessible even though the decent battery life means that recharging does not necessarily happen frequently. I am considering drilling the handle to create a hanging loop ... which I think could be a useful modification.Read full review...

I am a retired disabled lady who has constantly looked for a powerful vacuum that is user friendly and this one is. This piece of kit is easy to use and cleans everything. Highly adaptable fir different surfaces and different carpets and even those annoying four rugs. At the touch of a button switches off the rotating brushes so you can just keep going. The edge bushes get right into the edges where persistent pet hair settles. Daily vacuuming of my standard 2 bed home is more than halved to under 15 minutes. The extra tools mean at the click of a button just lift out the dust and tube, take it out to the car and the car seats and floor is cleaned in a few minutes.Hurrah a modern day feat of domestic engineering gives time back to other things from the labours of living in a fresh, clean, tidy home. 3 very hairy hounds with long white fluffy coats and their short haired black companion of the German shepherd variety share my family home with 2 little cats. Not a hair is missed. It is astonishing how much the daily vacuuming sucks into its belly including the dust that flies around from their daily outings.Thank you Direct Vacuums for making this essential tool of domestic drudgery affordable to me and thousands more. With every penny and minutes it has saved me. Brilliant.Read full review...

I bought this as my old Vax cylinder vacuum (which very very heavy and not suitable for my new one bedroom flat) and I am thrilled with the bargain. This is a very good machine. The spinning brush for carpets does not seem as good pushing forward, and it very noticeably works much better pulling it backwards, no problem as I thing we all push forwards first, and then backwards..Goodness only knows how Vax can possibly justify the extortionate RRP, but at this price it is an utter bargain.Smaller in size on its cleaning head than expected, I would suggest that if you have say a 3 bed house then buy a bigger model. As I write you can buy one of these brand new from the Vax website direct, and with a 2 year guarantee for £179.99, but the seller will not change that their listing says the RRP is £229 or so. How and why the difference? = because the seller told me that the £229 was the original RRP, and 'sale' prices are not used.I suggest research the official Vax website to go through the models, decide on the best one for you, and then return to this good seller to buy at utter bargain prices. The removable hand held mini vac is a great design, and I am very pleased with this vac, let's just see how long it lasts.Read full review...

Easy to use and light enough the vacuum is okay if you know what to expect from a hand held vac. Personally I found it a bit underwhelming since I planned to use it for my car and small room for those easy to clean/hard to reach places. It did the job with my car (now I wasn't timing) but I raced through my car being against the clock and that battery did not feel like 15mins, it also really struggled to lift out the stuff between the cracks in my seat (tool extended or not). It got a little extra out of my floor mats after shaking but no where near perfect. Essentially if you're looking for a vac to do your carpets or vacuum fabrics then might as well forget it with hand held vacs but if it's just for a touch up or you have leather or laminate to clean then go right ahead. However, I think this review on the whole is aimed at the hand held vacuum cleaner class since (for a hand held) this vacuum is affordable and does a good job really. But if you're after power, longer battery life or have the cash to spare for a modern cleaner then probably go dyson or shark or g-tech, one of their wireless models.Read full review...

This is fab. I have a toddler, and my poor hoover was getting a real workout, as she seems incapable of eating anything without spraying crumbs around her in a 3 foot radius. It's not the most powerful handheld, but that's probably obvious from the price! You're not going to be able to hoover carpet throughly with it, but it's fab for quick clean up of surface crumbs and general mess, and for keeping the sofa clear of biscuit crumbs.I hoovered my car out properly prior to getting this, and it's been great since for keeping on top of the mess that accumulates in there - again, I think it would struggle to properly clean out a car, but it's more than capable of keeping on top of general surface mess. It's easy to empty, and the filter just needs running under the tap every couple of weeks to keep it free of the dust that is sucked in to it.As a bonus - if I sprinkle tiny bits of paper on the floor, my 2 year old will spend the next 15 minutes meticulously sucking up every last bit, and I can drink a cup of tea in relative peace.

This is a cracking handheld vacuum !! It's well worth the extra money I paid compared to cheap ones that don't have any suction power at all. It's dead easy to empty and to clean the inbuilt filter which you must do on a regular basis to ensure full suction. I like the retractable crevice tool too. Smart looking, solid and well made, it really does the job well. It might be a little on the heavy side for the elderly. Only one drawback, why oh why don't they include a wall bracket for it ?? !! You don't want to leave it lying around on the floor or a work surface near a 240v socket so why not a bracket to house it ??I keep mine plugged in and charging 24/7 to make sure it's ready for action at all times so I came up with the idea of using a wall mounted iron holder to slot it into for storage which works well but added an extra £6 or so to the total cost. So, get one when it's on offer and and you won't go wrong. I would recommend this product !!Read full review...

A great little machine that is quick and light. Although it is more effective as a sweeper than a deep clean vacuum. I use mine for a quick wiz to pick up the bits that sit on top of the carpet, then once a month use a standard vac that sucks the deep down dirt out of the base of the carpets. It save a lot of time.Easy to use, no messing with cords and plugs. Keep the battery charged though, because if you use all the battery charge it takes overnight to recharge it.The handheld mini vac is ok for crumbs etc. but as it sucks only (no brushes) don't expect it to remove pet hair from furniture etc.If you are thinking of this as your only vacuum then you may be disappointed,on the other hand if your thinking of this as a cordless sweeper for a quick tidy up in between, then you will probably love it.Would I buy this product again? Yes, but not at full retail. I paid 1/4 of the normal price which I think was a bargain.Read full review...

As an owner of Vax equipment, i know they’re good products. So I’m going to give this a good review sight unseen. However, I shall test it out for myself first chance I get. You see, this item has been bought for my 23 year old, who now lives in his own place of abode but has not quite grasped that he still has to keep it clean. It’s his room, he argues, so why is it anyone else’s business! This, from a young man who won’t touch a door handle because of germs which may or may not be present. And its not for want of us teaching him about neatness, because we have. He just thinks its unneccessary. So I bought him a Vax handheld to mop up the crumbs, dust and hair from his desk, and his bedside cabinets, and any other surface which may need it. I know it will be invaluable to him, once he’s opened the box. And so I will report on the state of his room next time I go there, and give this produc a better review!

I love this little, very quiet (compared to others), hand held dust buster. Its little extending nozzle is useful for narrow places, and so very easy to press the button and unclip for emptying and cleaning. It lasts a good 13-15 minutes without the need to recharge, but make sure if your moving stuff or anything to switch it off between uses to get the full battery time for it.Being a crafter and a cat owner, I have small paper pieces and bits of crafty items all over, and then of course the dust bunnies of cat hair that suddenly appear from nowhere :) This machine lifts everything and all without a problem. It all lifts kitty dry food and so on,so for slightly heavier items it does just fine.I simply love it and its great for the price that i paid for it at just £25. My only minor gripe with it - it doesn't have a wall mount, disappointing but have found another company that does one that may fit.
