This is the latest version of the U85 Air Stretch and is essentially the same model except for a change in colour to a quite pleasing blue/silver combination and the inclusion of a 'turbo tool' which is particularly useful for removing pet hair from all the places that pet hair seems to collect. And we speak from being a family with three fur shedding cats! The inclusion of the turbo tool is the main reason for this model which currently retails at the same price as the original...bit of a no brainer if you get an extra tool at no cost. But does it work well as an everyday family vacuum in this age of high tech high performance cyclonic cleaners?Pleased to say it does with a couple of relatively minor caveats and is an exceptionally strong contender at a price level considerably less than the well known Dyson alternatives.Lightweight and with exceptionally good suction power, the cłever design of this means it takes up the minimum possible storage space. There is little assembly required and a lasting impression is just how lightweight this Vax is. Easy to carry around or up stairs. The cleaning head does not adjust for levels like the more expensive Dyson but suction is incredibly powerful for such a lightweight machine. So much so that you need to use the slider bar to reduce power unless you are dealing with very smooth surfaces otherwise the Vax's progress will be hindered by the pulling power on the flooring.A cleverly designed '3in 1' cleaning tool ( see photo) clips easily to the main body that also acts as home for the extension hose. All thoughtfully designed and easy to use. The extension hose is also easy to connect and gives the Vax hand tool the ability to each to the top of a normal flight of stairs...a godsend. The brush bar can be deactivated for hard floors and tools and permanent washable filters are easily accessed. Filters ,whilst reusable, are also available as spares should replacement ever be required. We have used a U85 for almost 6 months now with no visible degradation in the filters or the performance. The handle can be adjusted for height and can also with minimal effort be lowered for storage. One small issue is that the open ended handle doesn't feel as nice to hold as more expensive cleaners ( whether Dyson or the admirable Vax AirLift Steerable Pet Max) but it is not a hindrance to use.The Vax is easy to a manoeuvre and, as the attached photos show, the design of the cleaning head allows it to reach underneath furniture, a task that defeated our DC41 Dyson with its taller brush bar. The Vax's canister is however smaller than the Dysons and will need emptying more often but still large enough to allow a normal cleaning session. An exceptionally long cord (13m!) allows the Vax to carry on working without frequent unplugging/ replugging to power sockets and the 'Stretch' description is well justified as the extension hose (which clips to the built in hose) allowed our stairs to be cleaned without moving the vacuum, a very welcome feature. The cord length might ironically however also be considered by some to be a drawback as it takes longer to wind up and if you are just cleaning a small room, 13m of cord is a lot to wind up.For us, it is a small disadvantage compared to the the flexibility it offers. The photos also show the green light that indicates the Vax is on which as a byproduct also gives a very modest modest illumination in the dark recesses that it braves to enter. The light turns red as a warning if the brush bar is jammed. The turbo tool is effective, see a photo taken after two passes of the tool on a cat fur covered moggie bed.Additional accessories are available from Vax and the design is such that the cleaner can be quickly and easily dismantled if any blockages occur. If you are looking for a vacuum such as this, it might also be worth considering adding the latest Vax Air Lift Steerable Pet Max to your short list. It is even easier to use but has a higher price approaching Dyson levels. In summary, with the U85 you get an award winning (Which Best Vacuum 2015) powerful, well featured cyclonic cleaner more than capable of dealing with everyday cleaning tasks and the pet hair cleaning ' turbo tool' is a real plus for cat/dog owners. Some of the plastics don't feel quite as nice to touch and the handle isn't perhaps as pleasing to hold as a Dyson but the price difference at the time of this review is very significant and not justified by any difference in performance as the Vax's suction is very impressive. The price difference is I think large enough to render the Vax the better machine in terms of performance/value for money. Can't comment on durability but a 6 year guarantee is provided by Vax which should offer reassurance re protection against unexpected costs.Highly recommended.

I confess to being a fan of Vax. Not because of their branding or cool marketing, but because their vacuums are VERY good - lightweight, practical and with loads of suction. Mostly my experience is with the small cylinder cleaners that follow you around like K-9, but I was expecting good things from this upright cleaner from the outset, and it is mostly very good.Firstly, a note on Vax's naming system - overly full of adjectives, but quite clear once you know how to decode it.This is Air + Stretch + Advance- Air means it is multi-cyclonic, with no loss of suction, and is at the top of the Vax range. The lesser level of Dynamo, which bagless but does lose suction- Stretch means is has a stretchy hose for extra reach,3.6 metres theoretically. Very useful in larger rooms especially with the 13 metre power cord. The standard version is Reach, which has the 13m cord, but not the stretchy hose.- Advance means is has all the extra tools. The key one is the Turbo Tool, which is a brilliant brush attachment. This is also in the Pet version, but not the entry level with doesn't have a suffix. The extras in the Advance are the hard floor tool, fur n' fluff tool, high-angle tool and mattress tool. There is also a Complete model knocking around which doesn't have the extra toolsSo it sounds like this is the top of the range for Upright Air, but actually there is one level higher - the Lift Steerable range. It follows the same naming system though, so there is an Air Lift Steerable Advance and an Air Lift Steerable Pet. They are pretty cool with the entire guts of the machine removable from the, erm, main stick (?) part of it. This means you can carry it, and the hose, to reach awkward spots. And it is impressively steerable.Well worth checking out the products photos as it might make more sense for you than this model. What you gain in portability you lose in a shorter flex (10m vs 13m) and you don't get the stretch hose. So there is quite a trade off to consider.Anyway, after all that, will it clean your house? Yes.Vacuums are vacuums and there are only so many points of difference. If you buy this model, unbox it and start using it, you will notice these positives and negatives:- It is light, possibly the lightest upright I have used. But the steering is a bit iffy making it feel heavier than it is- The flex storage is the classic 'loop it round and round'. I do like my automatic rewind, and this does feel like a step back in time- But those 13 metres are amazing. Leave it plugged in downstairs, and go vacuum upstairs!- The suction is very good and in combination with the lightness comes as a bit of a surprise; yet the sound is pleasantly low- The TurboTool is wonderful; it laughs in the face of pet hair and is an all-round go-to cleaning attachmentI realise that my negatives are really about the switch from a cylinder to an upright. If uprights are your thing, then this cleaner is going to one of the best purchases you have ever made.It is undoubtedly a great cleaner with the epic reach and the TurboTool being the major key talking points. My personal rating is 4 stars, but I am probably being a bit harsh. And do check out the steerable models before making a purchase decision.I hope this review proves helpful

Well I have had to pass this over to my better half for review as she is the expert on all things to do with vacuuming, so without further ado, her review.I have a Dyson animal, but have recently had new carpets fitted and the Dyson, whilst excellent for wooden floors, is just too powerful and lifted them in places. I was very pleased to get this Vax via the Vine programme to see if it would be better for this task. The Vax comes almost completely assembled, just need to slot in the height adjustable handle and attach the extension hose and crevice tool. The silver and blue colour combination is a nice deviation from the original Vax orange, which I always thought was a bit garish and, although colour is probably not the most important factor when choosing a hoover, if you don't have anywhere to store it, as is the case with a lot of modern houses, it might be something to consider. The power lead is 13m - I don't think you would need to unplug to reach the the next room, even in a bigger than average house. The Vax feels solid and well put together, but actually not too heavy, making it easy to manoeuvre and carry up and down stairs. It is obviously well proportioned as it balances perfectly on each stair without the need to hold on to it when using the flexi pipe and crevice tool. The flexi pipe is actually long enough to hoover the entire stairway leaving the device at the bottom or top, but as a creature of habit I have always hoovered the stairs with the hoover accompanying me on each step. The hose is very easy to detach for this purpose and equally easy to put back with one simple action. In my opinion, the crevice tool could do with being a bit longer, but as the hoover itself is fairly compact, this is in keeping with it's overall size and does not make it any less usable. The handle, as mentioned, is height adjustable, which for me being quite short is a bonus as I often find it uncomfortable when vacuums are too tall. The handle also retracts to a very low position, or totally removable making it very easy to store in a cupboard which is not full height or even behind the sofa out of sight. The handle also doubles up as an extension to the flexi hose for getting to hard to reach places and sorting the cobwebs on the ceiling.Emptying the dirt container couldn't be simpler, one button to release it from the body of the hoover and another to open the bottom allowing the dirt to fall in to the bin.I would say the the Vax is very good value for money and ticks all the boxes and more for the price, my only criticism is the crevice tool, which I think could be longer and its on board storage position is not ideal as it falls off every time the power cord is removed.

I am reviewing the Vax U85-AS-Pe Air Stretch Pet Multi-Function Vacuum Cleaner, 1.5 Litre, 950 W, Silver/Blue. Here are my thoughts:^^ When I first opened this up and tried it out I couldn't believe how short the hose was, and then I realised that there was a separate hose attachment that you can add to the hose pipe already on it, and hey presto, I could see the real meaning behind 'stretch'. The hose actually does a really cool thing as it stretches out and grows, and then concertinas back neatly to its original short form.^^ At 4.9 kg this is fairly light in comparison to the Vax U84-AL-Pe Air Lift Steerable Pet Vacuum Cleaner, Silver/Blue model.and I do like an upright that doesn't way a tonne.^^ From this range this VAX vacuum cleaner is one of the most powerful at 950 watts. But, I will be honest, at first I thought this had such a bad suction I was appalled and quite frankly shocked. Then I discovered I wasn't using it properly (a switch to the left or right is for hard floor surfaces or deep pile carpets). But what really made the difference was when I also discovered the button that makes the brush roller actually spin around! So when it was tough to push and not sucking up anything... it was just my own doing. Doh!^^ So, once I worked out how to use it correctly, I stepped back to really take in the design. The blue and silver colours do look great together and certainly gives it that familiar, modern VAX touch.^^ At the current price, it's pretty good value for money.Overall:I've been lucky enough to try a lot of different vacuum cleaners over the years. It's not my most favourite job, and it's definitely not my choice of an ideal gift, but vacuuming the house is one of those things that needs to be done -- as effortless and easy as possible. Especially with lots of pets around. Now I have worked out how to use it properly I love it! Can easily recommend. Just learn from my mistake and read the manual properly before you start, it will save you a lot of frustration.

+++ This review is for Air Stretch Advance +++BIG===This is a BIG upright vacuum cleaner. But it is also light — you can carry it upstairs with one hand — it's remarkable! However, in use, it can "feel" heavy, because the suction is so strong; it sucks vigorously.FLIMSY HANDLE=============The handle that you hold (in upright mode) is also the wand. It's an open tube that looks really weird! It's somewhat uncomfortable to use. It's NOT sturdy and keep accidentally extending when I'm pushing the hoover around.(My advice is to just hold that to guide the hoover when in upright mode — never to lift the whole appliance up, as it comes out too readily.)FIRST USE - WOW!==============On my first use,I vacuumed a cream rug.My housemate remarked that the rug looked revivified! You could see all the dust, fluff, grit, and dirt that was sucked up into the transparent chamber.CABLE======The mains cable is long. Very, very long!I can do the entire ground floor from one plug point. The downside is there is a lot of cable to manage — it falls of its hook.STAIRS======To do the stairs, you need to unclip and re-clip to attach various accessories, extension hoses and the wand. This is ANNOYING. I really hated this at first... but now I'm more used to it.Some people will find this very unwieldy. It's clever engineering and design — but it is a pain!EMPTYING=========This is quite disgusting ?? .Sometimes, you will have to get up close and personal with all of those dead skin cells, grit, pubes, etc.At times you will need to use a long skewer to awkwardly hoik out the grim stuff from around the vacuum cylinder. For example, large bits of tape or plastic wrap. All this mucking about results in a large grey plume of carpet suckings spreading itself around the room that you so joyfully cleaned only minutes before and your hands will be caked in thick dust.(It's not always like this — sometimes you can just press a button and empty out the thing without much fuss at all.)

From opening the box we could tell this vacuum cleaner was of a high quality. All of the pieces were well organised making it easy to unload and lie out for assembly. The vacuum itself looks modern, a clear/grey combination with a flash of turquoise, it would look great in any household. Each component was separately packaged and after removing them from the bags it was clear to see this was a high quality item.It took around 5 minutes to assemble to vacuum, with easy-to-follow steps in the booklet we were ready to try it out in no time. The tubing clicks into place easily and the handle is attached in one simple motion.Although not the lightest, it is easy enough to lift and manoeuvre. It’s size also helps with storage as it’s quite slim and dainty. Even with a very long chord, it’s easy to wrap it around the hooks on the back of the vacuum without any issues. In regards to the power, this is by far the best vacuum we have owned. The suction is brilliant, and you have the option to switch from a hard floor to deep pile carpet mode, therefore it really is an all-purpose household item. As mentioned, the power chord is more than long enough, we managed to do the whole bottom of our house without once switching sockets. This vacuum really does grab every bit of dust and dirt on hard floors, and deep carpet, with a performance I can only imagine is on par or above that of a Dyson. The tools which come with the vacuum are really handy, and are great for cleaning stairs and hard-to-reach corners, with a choice of three different cleaning heads. You can switch from the main vacuum to the tools in a matter of seconds by simply unclipping the tube from the main section and adding the desired tool (slim tube, brush and felt). There is even an extra piece of tubing to extend the tools so you can reach further and higher during vacuuming.All-in-all this is a great vacuum cleaner. It has everything you need to clean your whole house with minimal effort and maximum suction.

I have mixed feelings about Vax products as I have owned two in the past: one was great and the other not so (heavy and very, very loud). Consequently, I had an open mind about this one.Negative points:Firstly, there is nowhere to attach the turbotool to the hoover so it has be stored separately. Also the turbotool doesn't work very well on things like cushions etc as the brush stops turning. The VAX has a tendency to suck up the edge of some rugs into the brush bar/head. Its easy to extract them but annoying as you can't just go from one surface to another. The handle is removable to use with the hose but this makes it feel loose when locked in the holder and being used as an upright vacuum cleanerPositive points:Extra long cable is really good, saves having to unplug constantly. I got all the way round upstairs in one and the same downstairs.I really like that if you stand the VAX upright the brush bar/head stops spinning so you can move things etc. It's not noisy, in fact the turbotool is noisier than the main vacuumAdjustable suction is easy to use, can be done by sliding it with your foot and really does make a difference to the performance, not just a gimmick. It had no problems picking up pet hair and it performed much better than my old Dyson vacuum. It's light weight so easy to handle and carry, and I like that you can turn the brush bar/head off and on as you need it.The hose is easy to attach/use and reached to the top of my stairs. Emptying the waste is easy and the sections come apart so you can clean it but it can get a bit messy emptying - patience needed.Overall:I'm rather impressed with it for such a light weight vacuum. It's got great pick up and much more adjustable/adaptable than other hoovers I've owned.

Our 11 year old "accidently" dropped our last Vax hoover down the stairs a week ago. After being "cleared of wrong doing", the funeral and a period of appropriate mourning, we worked up the courage to "move on with our lives." This morning our brand new Vax UCCEGEV1 Air Stretch Advance Upright Vaccum Cleaner (do they really need such long names) arrived!Ironically enough, my baby caused a major mess twenty minutes before I heard the knock on the door, so the timing could not have been better. The "major mess" was the inside of some packing material, which really clinged to the carpet, but I shouldn't have worried. The "Air Stretch" ("AS" or "ASS" for short from now on)really handled it like a pro and left the carpet looking as if it just had a shampoo wash, dry, massage and pedicure. After that success, I just had to try out some of the other cool attachments for doing wooden floors, stairs, etc., and boy did I feel like a kid. There was one particular spot in my house between rooms, where there is a little crevice which traps in dirt, coins, and the occasional body (mostly plastic army men.) Our old hoover had trouble getting enough suction to really clean it, so I had to do it by hand. The ASS just went to town, and sucked up the dirt, like a b##ch in heat. Anyway, here's my honest thoughts:Pros:Suction power is awesomeCord is very long for going from room to roomHose extension works great for doing stairs, without carrying hoover.Attachments work great on upholstery, wooden floors, stairs, etc.Handles extends to suit your height and comfortNegatives:None yet, but this was only my first day.I'm excited about cleaning now, which makes me realize I'm a little sad. :-)

The good bits:- Lightweight and easy to carry.- Has a decent amount of power.- Long power cable.- Decent length hose plus hose extension.- Cylinder hinges backwards well to make it easier to get brushbar under furniture.- Lots of add-ons come with it (turbo tool, hard floor adapter, the aforementioned hose extension, soft dusting brush, mattress tool, fur & fluff tool, high angle tool, 3-in-1 crevice, dust and upholstery tool)The not so good bits:- Air vent switch to change between high-pile carpet and low-pile carpet/hard floor down on the brush bar is a bit of a pain, you have to bend right down and it's quite stiff.- When emptying the dust container, when you press the switch the bottom doesn't fall open for the dust to fall out, it just opens slightly so you have to open it by hand getting dust on your hand. The fluff doesn't fall out, you have to scoop out with your hand.- Single mounting on back of machine for a single tool (bit poor when you have so many attachments) is a bit rubbish and tools tend to fall out, especially when you are winding or unwinding power cable.- Fur & fluff tool not particularly effective (I say this as someone with 3 cats shedding hair).- 3-in-1 tool is a bit of a pain to rearrange.- Grip on back of plug is not actually wide enough to grip the power cable. (There is however a hook on the back of the upright handle you can hook the cable over, but I regard this as being intended for use when operating, not storing.)- Handle for the upright does not fit snugly and waggles about quite a lot. I don't know whether mine is just a bit defective but I would be flabbergasted if the amount of give here is intentional.3½ stars rounded up to 4.

A good, class A energy efficient vacuum (23kWh/annum). Relatively quiet (86dB, about the volume of traffic heard from inside a car) and light weight (4.9kg) + it's a Which best buy in 2015I must make the point that this has a HUGE CORD - approx 17m, way above most other vacuums I know.It has quite solid feel to it and is much, much lighter than our other Vax (Air3 Total Home Eco Upright Vacuum Cleaner). The Air3 picks up most dirt but not quite so good with pet/human hair. This one is much better (The Air3 given a 4 star rating by me!!)We do not have deep pile carpeting, so I will not comment there. We do have a lot of wood/laminate floors, lots of mats and some short-pile carpet and this copes with both with ease (note - there is a slide on the front of the vacuum for wood floors/short-pile carpet and/or Deep-pile carpets, it's designed for all. It's suction level is superb, especially when one takes into account the noise level. The vacuum is not easy to manoeuvre on stairs, however, it's long flexi-hose is designed especially for this purpose, where the user leaves the vacuum at the bottom of the stairs and simply extends the hose for each step. I would, however, stress that anything over 12-13 standard stairs, and the hose can't cope. So, is it better than the Air3 - a definite YES - it picks up dirt slightly better and it picks up hair much, much better. It's lighter and easier to manoeuvre around furniture and, with the flex-hose, one can deal with those hidden corners as easily as the stairs. By the way, did I mention how long the cord is????Recommended

It's a very good machine, seems to be nice and strong - very good at its job. The only downside really, and this may be personal, but it's quite a bulk. Complete pain to manoeuvre for the stairs, it's not heavy but it's just an annoyance trying to balance it...luckily this bit doesn't take long for us (stairs are not covered in carpet). Doesn't feel too heavy on stairs, just isn't comfortable to do, but then again I don't think using a vacuum cleaner should be comfortable. It does a very good job on the rest, seems to suck up dirt well and certainly is lighter than you expect from the size. It's not "comfortable" to use - but I'm not sure any vacuum cleaner is, but it isn't as bulky as I expected and just works very well.Moves about easily on the floor, and has a very good power function to suck up dirt so that's a big plus - it's certainly what it needs to do and it does that well. It's ok when moving around the floor, but when trying to get corners, or in narrow places - it just seems to be bigger than you think it needs to be. The extension hose is good for these sorts of things - just feels like it takes some time to use rather than just whizzing it about. But it does a great job, which is quite annoying as Vax is something I'd not normally go for due to the cost... it certainly seems very good at what it does. Very strong, easy to use. Plus plus plus.Would give it 5 stars if it wasn't so bulky... not that it's heavy, just that it is large and finding a home for it when not in use is a pain. But the long cable is very much something that is approved of!

We received this as a wedding gift. This was one of the things off our wedding list that we would have purchased ourselves after the event if it hadn't have been purchased for us. Our previous machine, also a Vax, is a cylinder but I really wanted to move over to an upright machine after we moved to this house and had more carpeted area's.After unboxing all that was required was to fit the handle in place and put the attachments into the holder, if not using it right away you'd need to wind the cable round the holders as well but I wanted to try it out and see how it compared.I found this machine to be quite heavy but I believe that to be mostly due to having been using a cylinder vacuum cleaner for many years now.The suction however does add to this and can make it difficult to use if you dont have the setting just right so that it's sucking a lot harder than you really want it to be doing. My husband had no trouble with this so it might just be me not being strong enough to cope with it just yet.We both found it to be excellent and were surprised at how much it collected on both carpeted and hard floors. Between the expandable extension and the long power lead we found it easy to do most of the house with only changing sockets once (upstairs/downstairs).The book explained everything easily and it is very easy to empty the dust container and to separate all three parts of that to clean it all and keep it working as well as it did when we first used it. Overall I'm very impressed with it and really happy that we were gifted this model.

WHICH BEST BUY==============It's a Which best buy in 2015 so I thought I'd give it a whirl.MODERN?=======Yes, modern. We have a mixture in our house of tiles, wooden floor and carpets of various lengths. This little minx is made to cover all those tasks. We also looked after three cats recently. I'm surprised at how much hair little meowing animals can shed. This was the most effective 'hoover' I've used at getting pet hairs. (with one sweep)HUGE CORD=========I know size isn't everything, but the cord is huge. It meant that I didn't need to unplug it when 'hoovering' downstairs and then up. (I know it should be vacuuming but everyone uses the expression hoovering)COMPARED TO A DYSON====================Thisis a tad lighter and easier to manoeuvre than the Dyson.HUGE HUGE SUCTION=================For it's size and price the suction was impressive. And its build quality is solid.PROS====Picks up so much hidden dirt from the thick carpet I thought we must be filthy animals. (we're not.)For the suction the cleaner is reasonably quiet.LOADS of attachments. No bags. Since Dyson came along every manufacturer has moved this way.Fairly lightweight.Adjustable for wood, carpet etc.Superb for pet hairCONS====Although it's light it was still difficult to manoeuvre on stairs.RECOMMENDED===========For the price I think it's good. So yes.

Out of the box the first thing that jumped out at me was the Which Best Buy 2015 Sticker on the vacuum cylinder and I have to say it didn’t disappoint. This is cracking cleaner that is surprisingly lightweight. The cleaner has a 1.5 litre capacity and is aimed at homes with pets but this vacuum would be great in any home. There’s a setting on the brush part where you can select your floor type between low pile carpet or deep pile carpet and you can really feel the difference in suction power when changing between the two.One thing I must mention is the power chord is ridiculously long at 17 metres.I found the cylinder part of the vacuums very easy to empty. Bagless as standard these days, you Just press the blue button on the top of the cylinder which releases it from the main body of the vacuum, then there’s a second blue button at the bottom of the cylinder that opens the bottom flap and then you simply shake to empty the vacuum. On the cleaner itself you have on off buttons plus a button to control the brush speed. The accessories are all clipped on to the back of the cleaner and there’s a really useful extendable stretchy hose attachment that allows you to get to those really hard to reach areas. The extendable hose almost reaches the top of our stairs bar a couple of steps. This really is an impressively powerful vacuum and excellent value.

Bought this a few months ago to replace a Miele cylinder cleaner, which had got worn out coping with dog hair, and my wife's long hair. prior to that had another Vax, which was very powerful ,but also very heavy. This one is less heavy (but not 'light') & we've found it very efficient, even with dog & human hair. (one thing you do have to watch with long hair is the way it wraps round the brushes, reducing the efficiency of the performance: I simply cut this build-up off the brushes with a pair of scissors). We've found it a very effective cleaner, really giving our floor surfaces, including carpets, a thorough clean. The dust container is easy to empty, and the machine is quite maneuverable in small areas, while the tools work well. The lengthy cord saves plugging & unplugging as you go, but you do have to be careful about how much you unravel, as it can get in the way. The extension tool & long cable, makes it easier to clean the staircase, but you still have a bit of a balancing act if your stairs are fairly narrow, as the machine has to balance somewhere. As my wife has mobility problems, I do most of the hoovering in the house, and have found this model an improvement on our cylinder machine, which sometimes struggled to pick up some items, while it is clearly lighter than its much heavier Vax predecessor. I'd say it was worth the money.
