WE bought this radio to replace an elderly, battery-fed Sony for use in the bathroom - 'Today' programme, Classic FM mainly. Finding it time-consuming to recharge the batteries for the old radio was bad enough, but then it started to crackle and drop off the signal - until shaken! We had thought of a DAB radio before but had been put off by shop assistants who doubted the strength of the signal in our area, plus our own research on the internet which suggested we were in a poor-ish reception area. Consequently we put off buying such a radio, but did look at non-DAB solar powered examples. Very recently a Google search led me to the Roberts radio of this review. As it had an FM capability and was also Solar - powered,it fitted the bill - my husband and I had 'written off' the DAB facility because of warnings mentioned above. When it arrived I charged up the internal batteries, put the radio in the usual position on a shelf in the bathroom and switched on. First impressions were of a very good sound quality and of a very well finished, attractive radio. Instructions were comprehensive and easy to follow. While reading these I glanced at the DAB tuning instructions and thought "nothing ventured, nothing gained". To our great delight, the Roberts very quickly tuned in to Radio 4 and Classic FM, with a strong signal (strength of which can be checked in the display panel on the radio, along with many other aspects of the machine. To sum up - the Roberts Solar DAB 2 radio is absolutely excellent. It looks good, performs superbly and has a solid, reassuring feel to it. It is also fairly small, with a very useful indent at the rear to allow it to be picked up and carried easily. It charges very successfully on the window sill from sunlight through frosted glass. It is so good we have decided to buy another one for use downstairs, in the kitchen / conservatory. We have decided to pre-order a green one (due out in early September). I would thoroughly recommend this radio to anyone.Eileen Grinly

That, by the way, is understatement. This radio sounds great and is very well made. DAB reception is excellent. There is a slot underneath the solar panel at the back making grabbing the radio easy to cart is out to the garden weather permitting. The only ever-so-slightly tricky things is to set the battery switch inside the compartment to NiMh as you install the supplied rechargable batteries. Yes, that is spelt the right way. Setup is instantaneous, so it does help to have the aerial extended before switching on. The user interface is great and shared with other recent DAB radios. Volume on the right knob. Tune with the big dial in front and then push to select. Easy peasy.Switch favourites on and the tuner will click through only them. Very intuitive. Favourites stays on until deselected. Just right. The solar panel is great and charges while the radio is on despite what the book says, although it might be the case that the charging light comes on perhaps to no avail while switched on. Anyway, this British summer is good enough to activate the charger with the radio on a bathroom windowsill. The rechargable batteries are regular AA and are supplied, which is way better that other brands which charge you an arm and a leg for a bespoke pack. The only thing I can think of by way of improvement, well OK two things: stereo and record/rewind.Read full review...

I bought this Roberts solar DAB knowing it to be faulty. On receiving it and removing the rear cover I found a small circuit board had become detached. After replacing with a bit of superglue I had a fully working radio for just twelve pounds.I do like the idea of the Roberts solar DAB radios but I have to say I prefer the original radio to the solar DAB 2.The first model was of a more rugged construction and had better sound, the solar DAB 2 has a more "bassier" sound to it and with no tone controls it can be somewhat annoying when listening to just vocals. One advantage the solar DAB 2 has over the original is the inclusion of FM reception which did come in useful when I took the radio abroadonly to find there was no DAB reception. The solar DAB 2 is a fine radio and if you enjoy listening to your radio outside you will never have the cost of replacing batteries, just the odd charge now and again with the mains adaptor, but only gets four stars due to the lacking in sound quality.Read full review...

Does the Solar Charging Work? I could not find reliable information on this, so when I bought the radio did some tests. When not in use, the radio is kept on a shelf by the window in a south facing conservatory, so gets plenty of sunlight when the sun shines. I use it for approximately an hour a day. Robert's website says that the battery life, without solar charging, is 20 hours. I found the following. During this 2014 sunny summer I have not ever need to charge from the mains. During the fairly sunny September - October of 2013 I estimate that solar charging gave 30% longer battery life than if there had been no solar charging. During the almost sunless winter of 2013/14 there was virtually no solar charging. In summary, the solar charging is very effective for a sunny summer if you keep the radio in a sunny place, and gives an extended battery life in spring and early autumn if there is reasonable sunshine. Sound quality? Rather lacks treble so has a slightly 'muffled' sound to my ears.

I bought one of these 2/3 yrs ago to use in my camper so I didnt have to worry about batteries (eco warrior) while I was out n about. Despite the unpredictable British climate I never had any problem charging or running my radio and reception was only a problem when I was in valleys (at festival sites) and even my phone was out. Rechargeable batteries dont last forever and I did have to replace them after a while and give them a home boost charge before I went away.. but my radio never let me down once even when I was away for several weeks on the trot. Even on cloudy days it could summon enough energy to get me the News Quiz.I've had to give up my precious van now but my radio potters around the house and down the shed with me and tho its starting to look a bit beaten up now,its still going strong. When it finally bites the dust, I shall certainly head for another Roberts. Cant fault it.

Was disappointed at first with the size, it was smaller than a non solar panel model I had seen in currys, also there was only one speaker. Sound quality is good, better when hooked up to a hifi system. The solar panel works in dull conditions but does not charge in my north facing kitchen window. Charges outside in all conditions. Sounds great with headphones connected. I had a dab radio four years ago and was disappointed with how quickly it ate four D size batteries, usually one set per 6 hours of listening; this one however is a pleasure. Worked continuously all day outside for around 8 hours without needing a recharge. We used it with an IPod connected so a group could hear the music outside, was great. All round it's a good little unit for £70 mark. I have the white unit. It has a good quality finish to it.

I have been using this DAB solar radio for a few months now, I purchased it after amazon reduced the price to a point that I was happy with, the radio has good sound and it is made from quality parts, it can be charged using the mains charger that comes in the box, this takes a few hours for a full charge, it can also be top up charged using the solar panel by placing it somewhere in direct sunlight, the rechargeable batteries are easy to replace (although I have not needed to replace them yet - after a few months regular use) and the ability to switch back to FM can be useful because if you are listening to a FM station on a larger radio in another room this unit can be used a mobile and wireless extra speaker.A great product now at a great price from amazon, I love it!

I have had this radio for about a year now and am very happy with it. The sound is soft and rich in quality, far better than any other radio of this size that I have ever had. The battery life is excellent, although I havn't actually tried to keep track of how many hours it lasts on a charge, it works for several weeks with the amount of use that I put it to. Also my bathroom is windowless and as I don't always remember to put it on a windowsill in another room to facilitate a solar top up charge I am more than happy with how long it works for. The display is very clear and easy to read, and the controls are simple and well thought out. It is not a cheap radio but the quality of the sound, design and manufacturing is well worth the price if you enjoy listening to radio.

I’ve had one of these for about 5 years, which has survived showers and being dropped down the stairs a few times! I don’t think I changed the batteries for about 3 years initially- I kept it on a very bright windowsill. Now it’s kept on a much darker windowsill and needs mains charging more often, but that’s to be expected. Perfect for taking out into the garden, or on picnics. The sound quality is lovely for such a small radio-quite a deep and clear sound. You can’t expect it to be able to sound like a bigger, more expensive radio, and the sound does distort very occasionally, but for its size it’s excellent- not tinny at all. Perfect bathroom radio too, this latest one was bought just for that!I LOVE this radio and wouldn’t be without it.

Really happy with this little radio. It was bought as a bathroom radio (mainly) and sits on a sunny windowsill. It has one 'Favourite' station (either DAB or FM) and you can press this button and it will go straight to that station, switching from DAB/FM if necessary. The preset system is great too - you can have as many as you want and then set the radio to only select Presets when you turn the dial - this all makes it a very easy to use radio. I have a couple of Pure radios and they are a lot more clunky to use. All-in-all a good purchase and a good 20% off RRP when I bought it.Note: as mentioned in the title, this radio is much more compact than I thought, worth checking out the dimensions.

After returning two other digital radios that ate through batteries within 2 days we went for the Roberts Solar/Rechargeable. Aside from the great look (white) and sound, it is easy to use and the favourite DAB station feature can be supplemented by having a second favourite on FM. Storing a selection of other well used stations is also very straightforward. The biggest bonus is the battery life. We have used this radio for approximately 20 days in the last 35. After the initial charge it has only been topped up by the solar panel. It does get plenty of sunlight as it sits on the window sill in the greenhouse but nonetheless it's a great performance from a lovely little radio.Excellent VFM.

I ordered this radio in the UK because I could not find a solar powered radio in Belgium, there you go. When it arrived I immediately thought: What a pretty little thing. I take it all over the house, followed the entire Tour de France sitting in the shade in my garden...."Robert" - as I call "him" - how pathetic can I get - is my bestest compagnon. Lovely and pretty radio, very good sound, lots and lots of radio stations. Wouldn't miss "him" for the world! Would recommend it to anyone interested in saving electricity in addition to having a portable radio one can simply take along and enjoy whilst doing chores in and out of the house.

Great radio for the bathroom.I fully charged it from the mains initially and it has been sitting on my bathroom window sill, where it gets morning sun (on the days we are blessed with sunshine)and has only needed one short top up mains charge in two months. I use it for a couple of hours every morning. The reception is excellent and the sound quality very clear. My only gripe is that I would have preferred buttons for pre-set channels instead of the dial, but as I tend to listen to only a couple of channels it isn't really a problem.I would definitely recommend this great looking little radio.

Brought the radio to take camping due to the battery and solar option..It does come with a mains adaptor which can power the radio and also be used to charge the rechargable batteries (radio turned off). If all else fails you can use std batteries just remember to flick the switch in the battery compartment so they are not charged if you decide to connect to the mains.Good sound, easy to setup and use. Be warned only achieved full capacity on the third charge of the supplied rechargeables gave 23 hours before the red light came on. It was just for camping but now it's in the kitchen.

Simply brilliant ! It looks and feels "quality" the moment you take it out of the box. How Roberts can make a radio sound like one twice - three times the size of this is genius. The sound is superb. Not thin or tinny as small radios so often can be. It sits secured on a ledge on the inside of one of my beach hut doors, and the sun does the business! If it got stolen or accidently dropped, I would replace it in a heartbeat. Easy to understand how Roberts have gained the reputation they have. Great product ! Ten stars if I could.
