Here follows a long rambling review / comparison between this radio and it's slightly bigger brother the iStream3. (Bigger on audio Internet sources but not audio). We already have an iStream 3 but I was curious how it compares to the RD70. Along comes Amazon Prime Day and it's discounts on Warehouse Deals. The two radios sound almost identical so I have no idea what Which magazine were referring to when they slated the iStream 3 (56%) vs iStream 2 (86%) and RD70 (70%) - (but I am not going to get an older and significantly less reliable iStream 2 to find out).I really like the analogue clock on the RD70 and it's sad that it is not available on the iStream 3.I will say that the Night Mode on the RD70 is rather curious - it's warm colors are great. However, it is actually brighter than the minimum brightness on the regular brightness mode and far brighter than the Very Low brightness option that the iSream3 offers. The Favourite Button on the RD70 is really useful and great for jumping back to Classic FM. On the iStream 3 this is lost in favor of a USB port which I don't use much for USB music sourcs (but it turned out to be very useful for charging USB items, iPad). The RD70 uses significantly less power compared to the iStream 3 because it is not Internet connected) as can be seen by the power their respective wall socket transformers output. The RD70 cannot recharge batteries the way the iStream 3 can although I have to say that if you are using the radio as a bedside radio then the often almost constant Charging blinking light on the iStream 3 is annoying enough at night that I covered it with a piece of paper. Meanwhile the RD70's clock screen brightness on minimum means of the two for a bedside radio I would rather have an iStream 3 and just not use rechargeable batteries / not use any batteries at all. We put the RD70 Radio in the kitchen where we can appreciate its analogue clock and not be bothered by its brightness at night. Strange that it's Night Mode does not have its own brightness adjustment especially the Standby Mode.I use headphones a lot on the bedside radio where the Internet connected iStream 3 out performs the RD70 because I appreciate the stereo and improved audio quality (huge bandwidth on BBC Stations etc. that most of the Internet Radio stations offer (as a posed to often Mono only and low bandwidth (old codecs) of DAB) and so if you are planning to use headphones a lot then an Internet connected iStream 3 may be a better choice. Both in my opinion have much too much base across all their default 'Equalizer' settings so I usually use either 'News' or 'My EQ' and set it's Bass to -6 (and 'Loudness' off on the iStream 3). The speakers on the radio just sound droning to me if the bass is to high. Don't clean the fabric with anything other than damp cloth though.Love both Radios and recommend both especially if you are looking for an old school look.

I absolutely love this! It's the perfect marriage of retro styling and modern technology, sounds great and looks beautiful. The instructions are extremely clear and well written in an English only booklet with a decent sized font, so no issues if you are a bit older and/or your sight isn't great. It takes only moments to set the radio up - just plug in, switch on and let it auto tune. I live in an area with absolutely terrible reception, down low in a river valley and close to Stansted airport so lots of noise and interference. Despite this, the radio found 14 DAB stations in seconds on the very first try, and I'm sure if I could have been bothered to move it round the house and test other locations there would have been more.Crystal clear sound in that deep rich tone that you associate with the golden era of radio, probably down to the solid wooden build of the case. I next tried the Bluetooth option, pairing the radio with my Samsung S8 smartphone and that worked instantly too - a helpful ping tone to let you know the connection has been successfully made. I had no trouble whatsoever streaming from my Spotify playlists, and then switched back to DAB in an instant for a Graham Greene play on Radio 4. Best of both worlds! You can adjust the equaliser i.e. vary the treble and bass to your own taste, and also play with other settings like clock style, date appearance and display brightness. There's a headphone/earphone port on the top of the radio too.Roberts are renowned for their vintage look and this RD70 is no exception. Mine is the black leather version with a beautiful metallic gold control panel on top (a subtle copper gold, very tasteful not blingy!) with the royal crest in black (yes, they have a royal appointment!), and a mix of old fashioned knobs that that turn for functions such as volume, and push buttons for favourites and the alarm. There's a discrete digital panel that allows you to see where you are as you scroll through the stations and various operational modes. A smart leather strap with contrast stitching makes this radio properly portable, and the stainless steel arial retracts fully into the body of the radio so it looks tidy when not in use. Unlike any other portable radio I've ever owned the arial is rock solid, no bend or kink when fully extended. There's an option to run the radio with AA batteries (4 x LR6) so you can take it out and about if you want to.The packaging is a smart white box, made from quality cardboard, with the Roberts branding in gold and the royal warrant in black again on the top. It's suitably protective but still easy to unwrap what's inside. Everyone knows about this iconic brand but I'd previously questioned whether the comparatively high cost was justified. Owning one now I can clearly see that it is.

The RD 70 is part of Roberts' retro range of radios. Out of the box it has a luxury feel, and the word quality oozes just by its looks alone.Set up was easy. You simply plug it in, it self tunes and a nice large graphical interface on the top of the radio shows you the stations available (DAB/FM). It produces a very warm and solid sound which easily matches or exceeds radios in this price bracket. Connecting to a Bluetooth device such as an iPod was easy. There were no issues about not being able to pair, and again a very warm sound fills the room. It has various alarm settings and a variable sleep timer. It is worth noting that batteries are not included (it takes standard AA batteries)and there is no rechargeable battery built in. Also, there are no individual preset buttons which immediately take you to your favourite stations. However, most DAB radios are built this way.If the retro look fits your room, and you like the traditional warm sound which is found in valve radios, you will not be disappointed. It is a very nice radio however for it’s price which is just shy of £200 I would have expected it to have had a rechargeable battery and because of this, I don’t feel able to give the full 5 stars.

This is a stunning radio. Amazing looks, extreme build quality, great sound. It's a real classic with serious technology chops as well.Great sound. Rich, warm and clear sound, both as a radio and a bluetooth speaker. Tuned wooden case makes a huge difference to the sound quality. Decent equaliser (which is buried in the settings menu) with a bunch of presets and modes.Amazing looks. I've got the leaf one and it fits perfecting into the room with classic design and perfect retro-modernist looks.Build quality. From the handle to the ariel this just broadcasts quality. Things just fit together perfectly, switches are tight, buttons are positive responsive, covers and sockets are close and snug.Great design.Easy to use and intuitive controls, easy to link bluetooth, nice battery (4x AA), good battery life, clear & well positioned full colour LCD screen with a well thought out menu structure and UI. Dual alarms and sleep timer to enable use as an alarm clock. 10 DAB and 10 FM radio presets. 1 x Headphones socket, 1 x Aux In socket.I really can't find any faults with this at all. It's simply the best radio you can buy. Very highly recommended.

The Roberts RD70 is a class device. Build quality is excellent and the sound is superb. I was concerned that the unit is essentially a Mono device and worried that I would miss Stereo reproduction, but the depth of the bass and fullness of the frequency response more than makes up for this. It has the sound of a properly tuned wooden HiFi speaker and the sound is full with no hint of "Boxiness" that is prevalent in cheaper units. The interface is a joy to use and the display is clear and bright. My only gripe is that they could have employed an inbuilt charger for the batteries so the unit could have been plugged in overnight. As it is I run two sets of rechargeable batteries that I rotate - a bit of a pain having to swap over but wouldn't stop me wholeheartedly recommending this Radio.

I have several Roberts Radios including the outgoing RD60 which looks very similar to this one. There is some ambiguity on the web about whether the RD60 can be firmware upgraded to DAB+ In the end I just went for the RD70 and so glad that I did. It sounds way better than the 60 - which surprised me.(Would still love to know from Roberts if the RD60 can be DAB+ upgraded by the port). You can still tell its a Roberts though just by the tone. I love the intuitive menus and also the easy Bluetooth streaming. I also use it as a tuner so use the Aux out a lot. The leather is far more robust than the RD60 covering which was very fragile. Great job RobertsI wouldn't buy any other brand it is really worth the high(ish)price

My parents got this for my birthday this year and it's absolutely great. I agonised (much to the displeasure of my other half!) over which colour to go for for weeks, but ended up going with the Dove Grey RD70, and I am very happy with my choice. It looks great in our kitchen and the sound quality is really good. I made the mistake of having it play for 2-3 days without bring plugged in and needed to replace the batteries, so it is now plugged in to the wall by default and can unplug it so move it elsewhere when needed. There are much more high-tech speaker/ radio options out there in the market, but i personally don't require any additional functionality than what the RD70 offers.Would highly recommended.

Iv always wanted a Roberts radio but due to the high price never had one till now. Anyway decided to treat myself and believe me when you you listen to the sound quality you then realise why there so expensive. The sound quality is absolutely superb I honestly can’t understand how they can get sound like this from a portable radio. If you like music and want to listen to it in quality this radio is for you. The switches and build quality of the radio is also great. Iv read a few reviews and I believe the leatherette finish can be easy damaged if you are rough with it but i won’t so that didn’t worry me. I’d definitely recommend this radio.

I ordered this whilst in lockdown because I live alone and I found it quite lonely, so, now I have it on most of the day. I found not only was this retro type radio really smart looking it is so easy to operate, ie setting up all my favourite stations. The sound is incredible and because it’s in the kitchen it has a superb sound even with volume turned up high when I’m out in the garden. I’m also working from home at the minute and it’s great in the background and at the same time I never miss the news and updates. Would recommend every household to have one of these Roberts radios in their home, really value for money.

This radio is very stylish to look at but also offers great sound quality. It was very easy to set up, even for someone like me who is not that technically minded. I was amazed how easy it was to set up the bluetooth connection so I could use it as a speaker to play songs from my smart phone through. I really like the fact that it has a graphic equaliser so you can choose what type of sound to have. I found the original setting a bit too base toned for me so selected one of the other settings. This is not a cheap radio but the quality of sound and additional features have justified the purchase for me.

I've had several Roberts Radios in the past including the outgoing RD60 model. The RD70 is streets ahead and (although they look very similar) the sound is way way better on the RD70. Also the RD70 is DAB+ and a lot of the RD60s were only DAB (though I believe some of the later ones could be upgraded via firmware). Roberts have also improved the case material and it is a lot more resistant to the odd knock or scratch now. Easy to use and the ability toequalise the sound with presets or by setting your own preset. The RD70 has bluetooth which works well and is easy to pair your device with.

I bought a Roberts iPod dock and dab radio about 4 years ago. It was ok but not great and it broke last year.I was not going to buy another.I am so glad I bought this. I have moved into a small flat, don’t watch tv so listen to radio 4 and podcasts etc. This epitomises quality. It feels solid smells delightful (I’m not weird) and more importantly the sound quality is amazing and smooth. Bluetooth connection is good.Personally I don’t want or need Alexa or Siri in my home. If you feel the same then I suggest you pay the extra for this charming, quality radio

I bought this radio in leaf green for my bedroom and had same day delivery which was useful. The tone is excellent and I was able to set it up and running without too much bother and am thoroughly enjoying listening to it. The more detailed functions required thorough reading of the instruction book but this aside if I can operate it at the ripe old age of 58 then most people can! As some point in the future I will get another for downstairs also. The only downside is the price but you get what you pay for these days.

Bought for my partner for a birthday present I looked at all of the models in the range but kept coming back to this one.Super easy to use, a nob for on/off and volume. And another for station selection, it even lists all the stations on the clear easy to read colour screen. The sound is perfectly balanced with enough bass to make all the music you place sound as it should. Sounds the same plugged in as on batteries and battery life is plenty! You get future proof DAB and Bluetooth

Great sound quality, I was reluctant to spend this amount of money but im glad I did as the speaker sound quality is well worth the financial outlay. Our old radio, a Roberts , 13 years old, was poor by comparison. We don't leave electrical items on standby, but switch off at the wall socket overnight. Even with no batteries installed when you power up the next morning there is no having to wait for the radio to scan all the stations again, they seem to be stored, great design.
