Lots of things to like about this alarm clock radio. It's packed with features, as described (hopefully) in the blurb at the top of this page, and they are all useful. The different weekday/weekend alarms feature is nice - or you can use it if you and your partner need to wake up at different times each day. The DAB radio is a useful complement to the old-skool FM, and also provides the clock with an accurate, calibrated time signal, so you never have to set the time (unless it loses the DAB signal). In use I found the person/machine interface a little tricky to live with. The Ortus 2 is, like most modern gadgets, basically a small computer in a box, and relies on a few buttons to do an awful lot of things. Thus "Press and hold the 'Menu/Mode' button... oops, that was too long a press, now you've got the alarm menu on the display - switch off and try again. Nope, too short, now you're in the dynamic range control menu..." etc. Similarly, the rotary tuning control can be pressed to access information about the DAB station, but if you keep pressing for too long, it starts re-scanning the DAB stations. There were similar unexpected 'features' with the alarm controls but, like a slightly temperamental car, once I got the hang of the sensitivity of the controls, the unwanted surprises got less and less. The first morning, I could get the alarm to go into 'snooze' mode, but couldn't switch it off altogether, so left it burbling away happily to itself while I headed off to work. Again, the answer was the amount of time that you keep your finger on the 'On/Off' button. It now runs OK most of the time - see below - with the display turned down nice and dim, so that it doesn't light up the bedroom at night, and the alarms going off reliably every morning.*** update after 1 month's use ***The alarm has failed to go off on 3 occasions during the last month. I checked the date and day of the week (you can set alarms to only go off at weekends) and they are OK. It seems to happen the day after I have turned one of the alarms off (for example, if you had a day off work) and then back on again. If you just let it run continuously, going off every day, it seems to be more reliable, but my confidence in the alarm side of this product has been dented.*** update after 3 months' use ***You have to switch this appliance off at the mains every 2 - 3 weeks, otherwise I've found it just "seizes up". It remembers all your settings and reboots to work normally. They do actually say in the manual "disconnect from the mains when not in use"... but, of course, I foolishly assumed that an alarm clock was always 'in use', so left it running 24/7. Eventually nothing at all worked - the radio wouldn't switch on, the alarm didn't sound, you couldn't change any of the settings. it was effectively "frozen". Switch off at the mains and back on again, and it remembers your alarm times, radio presets etc. Very strange. It's like a phone in a funny-shaped box, I guess. Every now and then it just hangs and you have to re-start it. Classy.

The Roberts Ortus2 DAB Alarm Clock Radio is an excellent bedside radio with alarm clock and phone charger built in.The alarm clock radio is compact and sturdy in its construction, the controls are well laid out and the LED display is nice and clear. When in standby mode the display automatically dims, this is great through the night when you don't usually want a bright light beside your bed - the brightness of the display can be adjusted through four settings - I found that the factory setting was ideal for me.Set-up was straightforward enough, as soon as I had plugged the supplied mains adapter in and turned the radio on for the first time,it automatically scanned for available DAB stations and the clock set itself to the correct time via the digital signal. Scanning for FM radio stations needs to be initiated via the Menu/Mode button and the Tuning/Select control. There are two alarms which can be set to wake you with either a buzzer or your chosen radio station, the duration of the alarm can also be set for 30, 60, 90 or 120 minutes. So, assuming that you select a radio station as your alarm and leave the duration at the factory setting of sixty minutes, when the alarm goes off the radio station will turn on, play for one hour then turn itself off.Of all the features on this alarm clock radio my favourites are the following:• Being able to turn the alarm off by touching any of the buttons on the top of the radio. This is great when you're half awake and don't want to have to hunt for a specific button to turn the alarm off.• Being able to set a sleep function on the radio. This allows you to set the radio to turn off after a pre-determined amount of time (from 10 - 90 minutes), the volume gradually lowers prior to the radio switching off.• The different display modes, in particular the scrolling mode which gives information on the artist/track name, phone-in numbers etc.Not only does this radio have loads of user defined functions it also has a USB port for charging other devices such as a smart phone or tablet (very useful where there is limited access to wall sockets), a 3.5mm headphone socket (for headphones, earphones or an earpiece) and an auxiliary input socket (in case you want to connect a CD or MP3 player).I like this alarm clock radio very much, the only thing that it lacks is the ability to be powered by batteries which would make it truly portable and ideal for going travelling.

What a lot of folks don't seem to address, is the quality of the tuner in the better quality dab radios. This one is picking up over 90 channels, where most of the cheap dab radios pick up about 4 bbc channels. I would have thought this is main issue with buying a better quality unit, as well as sound quality, which is also excellent, for the size of the unit. The massive range of channels gives the luxury of being able to find some decent music, as soon as they start playing Ed Sheeran or James Blunt etc on radio 2, quickly avoiding loosing the will to live.. ???

I have had to return my radio to Roberts for a software update. It has a very common fault with this model in that the alarms go off at strange times that you haven't set it for. The software update was supposed to fix the problem but it hasn't. It is a great little unit, but the fault makes it useless.Others seem to be having the same problem and it is a known fault with these radios, so if it doesn't settle down soon, mine is going back for a full refund. The radio software update has worked and it now works perfectly, so I revised the score to 5 stars.

I am enjoying using this radio as an alarm clock. Firstly the design is pleasing to look at on my bed stand and isn't massive so doesn't take up too much space.I like that I can be woken up by my favourite radio station, the reception for which is excellent via a digital signal, especially because I live in an area where a traditional analog signal is poor.I also like that I can use it to charge my phone via the USB port. This is handy because I only have one plug socket near my bed and this means I don't have to chose between which is plugged in.

I'm in a poor reception area but this radio work far better than any I have had before. The sound quality is excellent and the whole build quality is very good. The display dims making it not too obtrusive brightening up when the alarm goes off. I have selected weekday alarms only which means i don't have to fiddle with settings at the weekend to turn it off. All in all a very good buy for £57.99. Yes, it is a little more expensive than others but you pay for what you get.

Very well constructed radio . Fairly easy to set up , 3 presets buttons easy to use , extra 10 a bit more fiddly to set but easy to use when set up . Lovely looking radio. Usb output ideal for my blutooth transmitter for my wireless ear buds which I use for night time listening. Sleep timer easy to set and use. Pulls in many stations with small wire aerial. Overall a feel it is a good buy as I have found with may Roberts products.

What a great little clock radio, really easy to set up and unlike the last one we had, really easy to operate in the dark with sensibly laid out buttons and dial. I like the gentle sleep fade and ability to tailor the alarms to week days etc. I'm hoping the Roberts name means it will last longer than the cheap budget effort I bought 18 months ago. I guess it's sometimes it's better to spend more and save in the long term.

I am a person who needs the radio on all the time! I use the radio by my bed. I love that when it switches off on 'sleep' it slowly fades, so it doesn't wake me. I use the sleep facility on 90 minutes every night. I also love that I can dim the clock or brighten it. As yet I haven't learnt how to use the alarm, but I am sure it will be as easy as the other actions but I wake before an alarm would ring.

An excellent FM/DAB bedside radio. This is the fifth Roberts bedside radio that I have purchased over the years and they just keep getting better. This one is packed with useful features (although one has to wonder why the dimmer has to be set twice – one with the radio on and the other with it off!). FM reception is much better than previously experienced with holder models.

I bought this to replace an old Sony Cube alarm radio. The improvement in sound quality is incredible. This has all the features I need as an alarm clock. I particularly like the ability to set weekday only alarms.I had no difficulty in tuning the DAB radio and setting up presets for favourite stations, this operation took a couple of minutes from start to finish.

Used in the bedroom. Sound very good. Instructions took some working out, and were not always accurate. Just had to keep trying until I got it right. (SLEEP FUNCTION). Not tried most of the other functions yet. On the whole very pleased.

As is usual for a Roberts Radio the sound is excellent. The radio is let down by complications in the operation, you need the manual to hand to do the simplest tasks. Still this does not detract me from the overall sound and appearance.

Great little DAB radio, excellent sound. A little bit counter intuitive to use - keep the instructions handy. Best feature is that the clock and alarm do not need to be reset if there is a power outage.

It’s a much better product than the other small Roberts DAB radios. They seem to have improved the power and plugs much better. I replaced this radio with a worn out DAB radio from Roberts so well done.
