This is a simple small radio which works pretty much anywhere without the need for being plug into the mains or the need to keep replacing batteries. My key points are;Good points+ Right, this is tiny, and fits within my hand. It is a Walkman size radio. This is not a problem and the sound output is loud enough for my needs.+ Has a good volume and I was able to have it on the allotment and I could hear it clearly (half volume) about 10m away.+ Well-made item and looks like it will last a good amount of time+ Three methods of charging the radio up.1) USB lead provided so you can connect to PlayStation/pc/iphone plug and other such means (shows a bright blue light.2)Light - and I say light because it even charges up when under a normal light bulb. I got a faint (faint blue light) charge when I was outside in rain under full cloud3) Wind up. All methods work well and it had some power when I got it (shows a bright blue light with minimal effort). I was able to use it out of the box which means its STAY charged ability is at least okay.+ Simple switch to go between AM and FM frequency+ Simple dial on the side for volume and another for frequency selection. A green light appears when you hit a radio station. The volume dial is also allows you to turn it off.+ Sound is okay and emits quite a punch for its size (pardon me for the video clip which is a little loud when I switch the radio on!). It's not a brilliant quality sound, but for me it's perfectly fine. It's a small radio after all. No regrets at all despite my hesitation after I read a lot of the reviews saying it was poor/tinny. It's okay!Bad/neutral points+ It doesn't have labels for the frequencies. e.g. radio 1 or radio 2....I understand this is because it's a global product and these names would be redundant elsewhere. Also, it's very small and getting the text on there might be tricky. This isn't a big issue but still I would prefer it had them shown.General points+ Not really up to being in the house and it wasn't great at finding a signal within my home, even though my Roberts radio can find a clear station. Its areal is smaller and perhaps the reason for this. I should say the Roberts radio only gets signal in the front rooms. But the Duronic radio is brilliant for its intended use down in the shed/allotment. This makes its ability to charge with sunlight and wind up perfect for the allotment. No more usb charging though.ConclusionsSo I have had this radio for a week so far and I am really happy with it. Not ideal for indoor use due to sound quality and signal quality in my home, but perfect for outdoor use. It can charge even with the slightest amount of sunlight (in full cloud as I said) and I just love it for this! Brilliant little radio! I will provide an updated review if its necessary.

I currently have a new Dispatch van for work (thats on a tracker) which every movement or ignition switch turn is monitored.. They say its a "business tool" but we all know different..Anyway, These vans are notorious for giving you a very small time to listen to the radio at dinner time. Citroen claims its calculated on the amount of time the engine is running. I get on average 10-15 mins at dinner for a hrs driving in the morning. If i use the lights in the back.. it halves easy..So my idea was to keep this in the van for "emergency uses"I leave the radio in the front cubby hole on the dash with a rag around the sides/back with just the solar panel showing and leave it charging throughout the day..The light is on from the first thing in the morning till later on in the night which is perfect. Yes the radio speaker doesnt sound as good as a car/van radio but that really doesnt bother me.. I have a product that I dont have to charge and I can happily listen to the radio through the day on the job or just through my dinner half hour.I have struggled to get signal the odd occasion but more often then not it needs a quick tweek and its tuned into a radio show no probs. I normally listen to Radio 2 with Jeremy Vine anyway which is mostly discussions etcNo Idea how long it will last if im honest but it does the trick for the time being!Id like to add that I did give it a charge from a USB source for a good full day just to make sure it was fully charged before putting in the van to use on solar.Recently had a blackout last week which we used wind up torches and the radio came in handy just to pass the time with music. Brings home just how much we rely on electricity!Highly recommend it.One point which is understandable.. It doesnt charge very well in double glazed conservatories. I think the double glazing kills the solar completely where as the van front windscreen is probably not as good as pure sunlight.. but it still charges enough.. just like in greenhouses which seems to be the primary use people are using them for!

Having read a few negative reviews of this product I was a little nervous of buying it. I needn't have worried. It replaced a wind-up torch radio that needed two minutes of winding every fifteen minutes. Two minutes of winding with this brought me forty-five minutes of clear sound. The solar panel also worked extremely well on the rare sunny days of the summer - once or twice I'd unwittingly left it switched on and the radio burst into life via sunlight hitting the panel. Which was slightly disconcerting when I was the only person in the house! One of the best selling points of this radio is the ease of tuning - the digital display makes tuning a breeze.Radio 2 is notoriously hard to find on some radios - this model found it no problem. Alone of all the four wind up radios I've owned, this one makes it possible to listen to the radio whilst still winding. The winding mechanism is much quieter than its predecessor too. There's a light that goes on when the radio is charging, so that you can be confident it's working. The only thing I can say against it is that my 2012 model had an on-off switch is hidden on the base which is very small - when I first unpacked it I thought I'd bought a dud, as it took me a while to find this. There is an additional on-off switch on the tuning knob.My 2012 model has 8 silicone buttons on the top to press (to set the time, alarm, select band, light for digital display, and the torch) This is in addition to the two knobs to twiddle, including the on off switch on the tuning so the little on-off switch on the base wasn't obvious. A comment below my review has stated that this on off switch is no longer present on current models. The design is very stylish without sacrificing functionality - it's small enough to fit into a large coat pocket. My radio has worked brilliantly for the last three and a half years, and I haven't found the decline in performance that some others have reported. I remain really happy with this and consider it an excellent buy.

For some time I've been using a Grundig Yacht Boy radio, a small modern one and it sounds really good. This radio is smaller still and whilst the quality of the sound is not as good - you pay for what you get, it has now become the default radio of choice. Maybe because I'm tight and the idea of saving money on batteries appeals ? I was amazed at how the C cells on a digital radio were eaten up, astonishing !It is small enough to fit into a pocket which is useful, though it is mainly used for short periods in the morning and at night. During the day it's getting its charge on the windowsill.I found that whilst walking with it the reception did dip every 10th step or so,perhaps that's the area where I live and it does tend to need to be placed indoors in the right spot as the reception can vary. Perhaps a longer aerial might help, or is more to do with matching the aerial to the tuning circuitry ?The Volume knob operates the reverse way around, anti-clockwise to turn on and increase volume and the tuning knob is stiff and the tuning pointer is a bit off of the indicated numbers, but for all of these negatives it is still a fun radio that serves well. The case finish looks good, the volume control works really well at the very low end of the volume, I've found in the past that radio volume is difficult to set very low down as it tends to jump to a level that's a bit too loud.It has a headphone socket, not used yet and USB socket for quick charging, I might have used this once although the solar panel seems to be fine. I did wonder if a large blue LED to indicate charging was a good idea as current would be lost to power it, I don't know about that technology though. I nearly forgot about the wind-up charger, tried but not in earnst. I'm not sure if the radio is supposed to be left on when using that as a wind-up torch I had stated it shouldn't be on during charge, which I ignored and the battery capacity seemed to have suffered for it.

I have ordered 2 of these radios for walking and as an addition to home "emergency" kit (ie. power blackout etc.). It is a small and light radio, its sound is imo very good for its size though a little tinny, the handle arm on both sets has a good positive action and provides a noticeable improvement in charge time / radio use compared to a previous radio (though I have not measured this), the telescopic antenna is recessed on the back and seems sturdy compared to a previous radio. The included battery is in a small compartment underneath, some NiMh battery which could of been slightly larger size (it is very small) though this is being picky. The flashlight is 3 LED type with a flood type diffusion, and is bright enough to light a room or provide very short distance illumination outside. I have not used the solar panel ontop but the LED indicates charging when in sunlight and I think it is a great addition. The volume and frequency knobs are recessed and well protected, and the whole design appears very durable for knocks and blows, though I doubt it is waterproof it appears very well constructed. It came with a few accessories which I used to charge up to full from a 5V USB port, it also comes with a female usb adaptor which I used for a short test to charge my HTC Desire smartphone, winding the handle indicated charging on the phones screen, I do not know how long it would take to fully charge a phone in this manner but it is a great addition.I compared this model to many other models of more expensive wind up radios online and out of many compared I think this one has the best price / feature set out of basically all others, plus its construction is v good, I am very happy with it and decided to leave this review!(Duronic Apex Digital Display Wind-Up Solar Powered AM/FM Radio Alarm Clock Torch)(I think there is another one from Duronic with similar name and look but without what I felt was the best feature set)

If you want a small indestructible radio which provides a more than decent sound and will save you a fortune in batteries, then look no further than one of these wee beauties.I am usually much too selfish and indolent to take the time to write a review, but I felt I just had to honour the memory of my wee durable duronic. I bought one of these trannies 4 years ago and to my shame I have treated it abominably. I have dropped it, kicked it, painted it and immersed it. (It is not billed as waterproof or even water resistant, but I inadvertently sent it for a swim whilst shaving).Despite all this abuse, Donny, ( yes I applied a nickname), just kept on trucking without the slightest note of complaint.Well......He did until just last week, when I most unfortunately sent Donny for another morning paddle. Instant silence resulted, both from me and Donny. When I rescued him, I gave him a good shake, twiddled all the knobs and dried him as best I could. But silence continued and his wee lights refused to shine. So with great sadness I put him back on the window sill, made a mental note to consign him to the right recycling bin and shortly after placed an order with amazon for Donny mark 2.Then the very next morning, as the sun shone through our bedroom curtains, my wife and I were startled by an odd crackling, rasping sound. And as I lay back in astonishment, the rasping gave way to the waspish tones of John Humphrys which I quickly realised were emanating from my newly recovered and most dearest of appliances. Donny had recuperated, forgiven me, and sprang back into operation!!As I lay there in bed, a sense of well being and wonderment washed over me, how or why did I ever lose faith in Donny?I am now awaiting the delivery of Donny mark 2, but have decided that a more suitable nickname for this superfluous replacement will be Donny Mark Twain.

This is small enough to be popped in a cargo trouser or coat pocket which is ideal for taking to the park or beach. That it can be charged in several ways is lovely. No more desperate hunting for new batteries in the event of a power cut. It charges just fine if kept on the windowsill in winter even on quite overcast days so I'm very pleased with the solar charger. The wind up charge lasts far longer than my old wind up radio too which is great, as I despise winding things up. For me the winding mechanism will only be used as a back up. There is a light indicator for USB charging which is very helpful. We used the usb charger to ensure the battery was fully charged before first use and I would recommend that if you can you do the same for convenience. The sound quality is deffo not that of a DAB radio, but it does have a decent volume level for listening to in the event of bad storms, or over traffic noise. At this price point you shouldn't expect BOSE quality surround sound. Like the wind up lantern of the same make, it seems reasonably durable in construction, so won't smash the first time it is dropped. I think it could take a light shower or splash but not full submersion in water, which again is reasonable for this price point. Tuning is nice and simple, which is very important in the event of emergency. The charging and tuning indicator lights are helpful. The LED torch is only tiny but a thoughtful addition, as is the station indicator back light function in the event of power cuts. You will still need a dedicated torch for cooking etc in the event of a powercut mind, but this will get you up a garden path after dark. This would make a lovely gift for a keen gardener or for anyone wanting to prep in case of winter storms etc.

I wanted a little radio for when I'm pottering about the greenhouse / garden and this fits the bill perfectly. It's very sturdy with a rubberised finish that has so far withstood various knocks / drizzle / crumbs of compost. I've had the radio for about 6 months now and have used it regularly outside for about 3 months.Plus points:- stays charged from the sun most of the time if left in a sunny spot (the greenhouse in my case)- red indicator light tells you if the radio is charging- when the charge runs low (after some hours of use), a 1-minute wind-up keeps it going for another half-hour or so- good reception for both FM and AM- capacity for nice loud volume if needed- torch is surprisinglypowerful (but a narrow beam)Minus points:- sound quality is not great but you wouldn't buy this radio for the sound quality- a bit fiddly to tune it using the rotary switch and I also find the tuning drifts slightly after a while- volume seems to vary spontaneously at times- top buttons are a bit small and fiddly- instructions are not overly usefulI charged it up using the USB connection when I first got it but it hasn't been necessary since then. I've used it many times when I've been out in the garden the entire day and it's kept going all day if sunny, with a few windings to keep it going later in the day. I mostly listen to sport on it so the tinny tones don't trouble me. I've now started using it indoors doing some decorating because it's so handy to perch on a window-sill.I've never used the alarm so can't comment on that but I've been absolutely delighted with this radio so far. I can see it being handy for days out / camping as well. I've actually grown so fond of it that I've even given it a name!

I can understand why so many great reviews. Its great. The radio is compact, feels sturdy and well built. Has a plastic rubbery feel which i'm sure will both ensure good footing to help prevent falls and also give some protection in the even of a fall. Tunning was good (even when aerial was not set up), sound was as expected for the size but useable and does depend on the reception. If you touch the antenna or are very close to it, it improves and enhances reception and sound, the position of the antenna and where its pointing and the distance to your local transmitter obviously also greatly affects the signal - its a question of experimenting - I've experienced this with other radios and its just physics, not this specific radio. The winding handle seems well built and stores in place well - has a nice shape and also ruberised so looks like it won't just come out of its resting place when you don't want it.The cable included is for charging from an external source: pc usb plug; also some phones have a wall adapter with a usb plug and there are car cigarette lighters with usb plugs (some cars have a usb plug available from stock) all of which could also be used for charging the device. Wouldn't suprise me if you could charge a mobile phone with this radio since the apex version can (has a different plug) - you'd need to source a 'USB A female to USB A female plug' adapter so you can plug your normal phone charging usb cable to that (not tested, but will as I can).Note: the volume and tuner wheels don't travel a lot, so don't puch them otherwise they will break! In all, what a great product. Arrive quickly as well.

...But if you do it could prove priceless!I live in a rural area, and on average 2/3 times a year the power goes down. When it does, I can be basically cut off from the outside world with no TV, radio, internet, and if the phone doesn't happen to be charged at the time, no phone either. It's only when we lose power do we realise how much we rely in it.And you don't have to be living rural either. In these uncertain times, any number of things can cause loss of power. It may never happen to you.....but if it does? One minute of cranking will give you around 25 minutes of torchlight, or around the same time of radio.Three minutes cranking will allow you to make a phone call between 4-15 minutes.Theseare all things that you take for granted until you can't have them!Apart from the above scenario it has many other more everyday uses. You could take it camping for example, or onto an allotment, in fact it's ideal for any situation where power isn't readily available.I've read reviews saying that the sound quality isn't great. Well no, it's not hi-fi quality, but did anyone really expect that?A radio, flashlight and phone charger that requires no batteries or mains power for around a tenner? But the sound quality is perfectly fine for keeping someone connected to the world, whether camping, on an allotment, or in a more serious situation.I suppose the build quality of this radio combination doesn't lend itself to everyday use but then again, that's not it's purpose anyway. It's purpose is more for occasional or emergency use, and for that at this price point it's perfect!

The Duronic Apex digital AM FM rechargeable radio is a uniquely styled portable. A host of features that you may enjoy having on a camping trip or an extended off the grid cabin stay.Search the radio and my name on YouTube for an in depth video presentation.Features that I like about this radio:* Analog tuner with a digital frequency counter. Refreshing!* FM reception is decent.* Triple LED flashlight that is bright enough for most cases.* Clock.* Alarm feature.* Back light for the LCD.* Headphone jack quality is good.* Simple controls.* Unique style.* Soft touch plastics, the silicone type.* Standard size, replaceable NiMH battery.* Dynamo.* Solar panel.* Included USB cables to charge internal battery and external devices.* Dual speaker design that gives the radio a spacious sound at low levels.Features that could be added or improved on:* Larger battery, an 18650 would be nice.* Optional Dry Battery bay in case of rechargeable battery failure.* Address internal buzzing sound on the AM band. (Noticeable during the daytime hours)* Alarm needs some type of volume adjustment, it's too loud.Overall, a fun analog radio with an accurate digital frequency counter. The FM band is nice, and the AM band shines at night, picking up stations 800+ miles away. A unique and refreshing radio in a sea of rechargeable receivers that are flooding the marketplace. I enjoy tuning this one, and it's smaller brother the Hybrid.

I bought this item to replace my ancient Freeplay Ranger wind up radio which I destroyed by dropping it down the stairs......I was a little sceptical when the Duronics radio arrived as its much smaller than the Freeplay which it replaced in my bathroom but after putting 30 seconds or so of charge into it via the winding handle, I turned it on and tuned in Radio 4 which has a weak signal in my area. The sound is suprisingly good, its capable of high volume ( important so I can hear it whilst I'm in the shower) and it held the station beautifully, something the old radio wasn't able to do, needing constant fiddling with the tuning dial to hold radio 4 without interfierence. The charging light also came on the moment I put the radio on the windowsill despite the day being rather grey. I noticed that the solar cell on the top of the radio had a protective plastic film cover on it, I removed this and the charging light is now noticeably brighter, leaving the radio ready to go and fully charged at any time. The supplied USB lead is a nice touch although using the radio whilst charging from this source is impossible as it causes unpleasant crackling interfierence. I can honestly say im really impressed with this little radio, it clearly shows how technology has moved on, its half the size of the wind up radio it replaces in my house but holds a station better, charges more easily and has better sound quality. Impressive.

sturdy, feels like things used to feel... over the past 30 years, we've all become acclimatised to having new products that fee flimsy, too light, easily breakable and shabbily made. The 2 generations below mine may never have handled items which feel solid, satisfyingly sturdy, well put together and with no in-built 'deliberate breakage points' which lead to rebuying entire item... (Such as the hinges of dish-washers / washing machines, kettles etc). it concerns me what a throw-away world we are and one look at our plastic islands in our beloved oceans shows the problem clearly - broken plastic items floating everywhere and fish cells now mingled with synthetic polymers. So I for one am glad and relived to find an item so sturdy, which does exactly what it promises, can bounce if dropped without cracking or breaking inside, rendering radio useless. Just handling it is pleasing; it's tactile; its wind-up cranks well and I even tested it BY DROPPING IT FROM A 3rd FLOOR WINDOW, WHILST PLAYING. It landed bounced, and when my friend picked it up, it was still playing on the station, with the ariel tucked in safely and only a small scuff mark on one corner! Really, world - let's demand such well-made things as these, applaud them when they are made, and let us question our rights with manufacturers, to make things WELL. or in this case, to make them superbly. Before we forget altogether what that feels like!

Well was I surprised when receiving this Radio, it is so Cute - fits in my hand. it is sturdy, and picks up all the FM stations I like - so that is great. Read on one of the comments on one just like this that it is Tinny - hmmmmmmmmmmm - well if you Want Great sound - then this is not going to give it to you - you should look for a surround sound stereo....LOL. I mean - after all - what do you expect from something so small? It sounds fine for when am listening to it while showering, the sound is very clear.I did not attempt to turn this on - I decided to Charge it right away with the USB - have had it about 2 weeks and it has not needed charging again - it sits on my Bathroom windowsill, and as it also has solar - it charges while sitting there, that way it has not needed recharging via the USB - you can see it is charging as a little blue light shows while it is sitting on the windowsill [same as when it is charging via the USB] All in all - so far - I Love this little Dinky Radio, so darn CUTE!It is now 2019 - bought this in 2015 - and this little radio is STILL going Strong! I use it in the bathroom mainly - so in a damp environment after a hot bath or shower. One thing have noticed - that when turning on - sometimes it seems dead - but just turn off and on again and it comes on - all I can say really is am very pleased with this and had to come back to say so.

My horse has been kept in his stable for weeks with this dreadful wet weather, our yard owner won't let them out onto the paddocks for fear of trashing them. So.... long hours in a stable is very boring for my old boy despite lots of leg stretches outside he still has to deal with the boredom of confinement.Thats when I decided he needed a radio but me being scatty with batteries etc I liked the idea of a wind up radio which would not only be eco friendly but would get around me forgetting to replace batteries.I ordered this product based on price and review and I am so glad I did.The product is compact and it fits nicely in the palm of your hand (I have small hands) to wind it up.Winding up the torch I find is theraputic and if you do it fast enough provides a nice little work out (bonus).I am normally rubbish at tuning radios in but this one was really really easy. I set it to the classical channel for my boy and wondered if it would only last an hour or so for him but 5 hours later on my return it was still working! The added bonus with this product is that it has a torch which is always useful in a stable where the light is low and you might need an extra bit of light to check out hooves etc.I highly recommend this product! In fact a fellow horse owner wants to order one for her horse and I will be buying another of these for general purpose.
