Laphroaigs 40% offering is too restrained in my opinion, but probably the best choice for someone new to the distillery. Not everyone wants their whisky to slap them in the face with a salty seaweed-covered kipper, although I have no idea why.Edit 20/09/11: OK I just bought another bottle of this (only phroaig I could find in the shops) so I can do tasting notes now.NOSE: Smoke, sherry, sugar cane, waxy honey, a little floral note - not very good with my flowers though, sea salt, sea spray, seaweed, more honey now, still not getting any peat!PALATE: PEAT! Cinder toffee, brine, coal. Sweet and sour working together. Heat starts to build up on your tongue.FINISH: Short and dry. Well not that short, but it does fade away too quickly. Coal and seaweed. And a numbing top lip. An iodine taste is the only thing left on my tongue. Quite an unpleasant taste, but I find it goes away if you take another sip ;) I guess you can call the finish long if you include the iodine.I'll do a second review later. This one was done not long after swigging my bottle on a park bench with a homeless man. I'm not joking.Edit 21/09/11: OK I'm going to do this one with water. Well, a wet glass. Same thing.NOSE: Smoke, caramel, the peat is coming out a little and I'll probably be able to smell nothing else in a minute. Spices, banana, alcohol. A little brine throughout. Coal. Seaweed, and then smoke and peat. A little dried mixed fruit.PALATE: Sea salt brine and a wonderful sweet fiery peat blast that wraps around my cheeks. Not getting any honey this time although the caramel/toffee -ooh some fudge lol- is in full force. Very fruity.FINISH: Long and fruity, like the Balvenie 15 SC before the peat takes over once again and then fades away to coal and aniseed. More the little red sweets than say a bottle of Ouzo.Much more complex with the addition of water, although I could go either way. These are my first ever tasting notes, and I posted because there are hardly any on here. I'm not a raging alcoholic (if only I had more money) so I won't be making any more for a while, but I will try to do more in the future.

This is my second foray into Islay's (eye-lah) single salts. Bunnahabhain 12 yr S.M. was my first; Laphroaig 10 (pronounced La-froyg) being my second is definitely an outstanding Libation! I give it 5 out of 5 stars, and it's truly indescribably delicious, but I will do my best to convey my appreciation of the Scotch Whisky.Nose: Laphroaig smells medicinal at first blush, but blossoms into a bouquet of peat laced floral scents.Palate: Liquid Smoke (which is a substance used in cooking to induce a hickory-based smoke flavor); some notes of Sherry, flavorings of charred wood from a smoky campfire sites, and a heaping muscular helping of peat (pow and boom). At the end of the day it's Smoke and Peat baby! It's definitely not for the uninitiated, or the "haters" , closed minded, or those unwilling to broaden their horizon's of libation exploration. If that's you, just say no or stay home and drink milk....ha ha ha.Finish: A drink that's been barbequed on the grill, marinated in Liquid Smoke, and Smoked (on the grill) over smoldering wood chips saturated in Peat water. It's a "Forget Me Not" for sure friend. Enjoy!

The distillery website describes this as having a "pungent, earthy aroma of blue peat smoke" and recommend that it is best enjoyed neat or with a little water.I would certainly agree that any decent whisky should be drunk neat. Some suggest that a little water helps to release the flavour, but Laphroaig has plenty of that without any help. No ice of course - this isn't bourbon! As to the taste, I am no connoiseur, but in my opinion the peat gives this a very strong and distinctive flavour and if you only drink blended whisky you'll be taken by surprise by this single malt. I certainly was and what came to my mind when I first tried it was "TCP". It has a very strong, medicinal flavour to it and it's very much an acquired taste, so perhaps some water /would/ help. However, don't be put off and above all don't just knock it back and then decide that you don't like it; explore it and, over time, you will come to appreciate the very complex and subtle things it's doing in your mouth. This is what, I suppose, the Americans would call a "sippin' whiskey".

Probably the most affordable age statement Islay malt (it can usually be picked up for £26 or thereabouts) and yet one of the finest. There are some finer Islays out there sure but they are usually quite expensive relative to this.Just make sure that Peated whisky is for you first as this isn't a delicate whiff of Peat you will gently pickup on the nose or finish. It's proper Islay Peat that pulls no punches. For those that like it, it's amazing and delicious but for those that don't (and I can fully appreciate why) it must be what Pastis tastes like too me.One thing I would advise is don't delay drinking it when opened. The intense first opening flavour does start to diminish in as little as a week in my experience. You will still get a nice dram but with less intensity.

Over the years I have become very fond of Islay whisky, and gone through probably more bottles of it than I'd care to admit. Somehow, along the way I forgot to try Laphroaig 10.I had high expectations as this is a favorite among Islay fans, but I came away quite disappointed. Yes it has the trademark Laphroaig TCP and woody peat smoke flavour, but when I compare it to the Quarter Cask or the Cask Strength 10 year old it really lacks personality. I can most definitely enjoy something mellow like Ardbeg 10, but where that bottle is rich and oily, the Laphroaig 10 feels thin and watery. There is always a bottle of Laphroaig on my shelf, but next time I'm in the market for one, I will be sticking to the QC,or Lore if I feel like splashing out.

I can't believe it's taken me this long to own a bottle of Laphroaig. I'll make sure I'm never without one again. This is probably my favourite 8-10 year old whisky and it's going to take some beating. Ok I'm a fan of smoky, peaty whiskies and if you're not you may want to look elsewhere, but this is such a gutsy dram that demands your complete and utter attention. The flavour comes in waves, all subtly different but all equally grounded in gorgeous smoke and peat. One of the longest lingering aftertastes I've ever experienced, which is such a pleasure as it stops you craving another sip for a good few minutes. Pour yourself a large glass and watch the evening fade away around you until only you and your smoky, peaty companion remain.

This, to me, is one strange single malt.Though I have drank Many brands of single malt over many years this Laphroaig 10 year old is so different. It has a strong smell looks dark and tastes powerful. After the first glass, which took some drinking, I thought this is terrible. I was thinking of giving the rest away it was that off putting. However, me, being me persevered with it.As I was getting my taste for it, it was better and better. Over the week drank the whole bottle and guess what, bought another two bottles later on, love it.If you’re a seasoned single malt drinker give it a go.If you have never drank single malt maybe give it a miss.Yes it might take time to get a taste for it but worththe perseverance.

Bandages, TCP, fire embers. Surely not smells and flavours highly sought after. Yet when I first encountered this whisky those were my first thoughts, I don't mean like those wine tasters on the telly with their " I'm getting hints of brass, and a suggestion of morning dew on a dog kennel" malarkey. No this stuff socks it's flavour and nose right to you with no pretence and leaves you in no doubt what is going on.Yet beneath all this love it or hate it first impression lies complex subtleties which contrast so well with the in your face initial impact.Forget any pretensions, Laphroaig 10yr is a wonderful combination of no compromise intensity, quality and sophistication.

What can you say about Laphroaig whisky that has not already been said; it is smoky, peaty and maybe not to everyone's taste. Just a touch of cold water - no ice - and definitely no mixers, this is a whisky for winter evenings with a good book and crackling logs in the fireplace. Or, maybe good company and fireside chats, mixing wisdom and setting the world to rights, warm sweaters and slippers. It's a world of difference, or just a world-gone-by bit of nostalgia when it's cold outside, but toastie inside; it is not up to date, state of the art, triple distilled, mix with something, anything, sort of drink. But it is great whiskey!

This was the first peated whisky I have ever tried. It was a somewhat brave decision, but I certainly haven't regretted it. I don't want to give it 5 stars purely because it has such a polarising flavour, but if you like peated/smokey scotch, it's certainly worth a try.Nose: medicinal, germolene smell.Taste: Made me nostalgic for the Scout camps of my early teens, when we'd cook breakfast and dinner over a smokey fire and not change our clothes for a week. The smoke overrides all other flavours initially, but has a slightly nutty flavour when taken with water.Finish: Harsh, medicinal and smokey. Long lasting.

When I bought this bottle the ten year old was only £3 more than the standard expression. A good buy for £28 with Prime delivery. To me this seems more smokey and with less of the peat but with a hint of Germolene ointment and (I think) a bit of the sea. Iodine? The 10 year old seems to be more rounded with less flavours but the ones that are there stand out strongly. Lovely. My first Islay was a Bowmore that I hated and told people it was like drinking mud. It took me weeks to get through the bottle. Now Islay malts are my favourite and I can't wait to try my bottle of Smokehead that is on order.

Got this on offer for £28, which is an excellent whisky at that price point. At first it's very one dimensional, a flavour reminiscent of the smell of squadron leader pipe tobacco. The sweetness and sourness can be detected, but are muted by the peat. After having a drop of water it really opens up, you get all of the rough edges coming back and it becomes much more complex whisky. If given the choice between quarter cask and this whisky, then I would choose quarter cask every single time if the same price point. As flavours in that unless muted and the alcohol content slightly higher.

When they say this is the most richly flavoured of whiskies, they are not joking. I find this to be one of the strongest smoky/peat tastes of all the whiskies I have tried. As soon as you pour a glass you get that instant hit of a delicious heavy smoke.I only drink whisky neat and so I sometimes get a burn from harsher whiskies. This isn't quite as smooth as Lagavulin, but at the same time it isn't so rough on the back of your throat like others. I have to say that I prefer this to the quarter cask Laphroaig and it is an ideal drink to finish off an evening meal.
