I love Islay whiskies and although Lagavulin 16yo is my favourite regular tipple, it's very difficult to beat Laphroaig Quarter Cask for value. It's regularly available on Amazon for the insane price of about £28 and when it is, I make sure that I stock up. If you're looking for an introduction to whisky, I would look elsewhere. If you're looking for an introduction to Islay whisky, I would also look elsewhere. However, if you already know that you like punchy Islay malts and if you want something just a little bit off the well-trodden path, you simply cannot go wrong with this stuff. It's outstanding: immensely flavourful, packed full of peat-smoke, sea-air and iodine - like Laphroaig 10yo on steroids. At 48% ABV, it's also a good bit stronger than the regular Laphroaig 10yo (40% ABV) which makes it even better value for money. It's not as immediately accessible as the 10yo (which itself is not everyone's cup of tea) but if you stick with the Quarter Cask, you'll find it hard to go back to the 10yo afterwards. The way things have been going at Laphroaig since 2018, I'd say that it's pretty likely that the price of this will increase considerably in the next few years - you only need to look at what's happened to the price of their annual Cask Strength and Cairdeas releases over the past few years to see that they are increasingly adopting a gouging approach (see also Aberlour A'bunadh). This being the case, I always make sure I have a few bottles of this in the cupboard under the stairs to try and dodge the inevitable price rise!

So this should be news to no-one, but Laphroaig is a notoriously smokey whisky. Their quarter cask (48%) takes it to another level. It is so smooth though! It is a completely different drink when you add ice. I think without ice it is pretty overwhelming smoke and peaty flavours. After putting in a couple of small ice cubes to see how it changes with them, I can say it really mellowed nicely. The smoke is not as overwhelming but leaves a lovely aftertaste in your mouth, along with the retained smoothness it makes for an enjoyable drink. There is a bit of tongue burn as you’re drinking it, which some people like but it doesn't take anything away from the complexity of flavours.I got this on prime day,I think it was around ~£25 so I'm gutted I didn't buy two to be honest but £45 is just too much in my opinion unless you're a major fan. I know they aren't comparable but two drams I'd rather pick up for less money are Dalwhinnie 15 Year Old which is a sweeter speyside for £33, or Bunnahabhain 12 Year Old which is a lovely Islay for £39. Though I can't think of a comparable replacement for Laphroaig's smokiness off the top of my head, suggestions welcome at a better price point than this.

As a drinker of smooth easy-going single malts, this was like a slap in the face. However, I have been keen to try different whiskies and so when this became available for £28, I bought myself a bottle. The first tasting didn't go well, whilst smooth the strong peaty taste was left with a kind of medicinal flavour. Adding a little water helped but there is no getting away from it, this is a whisky full of flavour. The second tasting went a little better, the whisky seemed to have mellowed a little and that taste I describe as peaty and medicinal was still there but I enjoyed it.The final tasting left the bottle empty and me wanting more. I will buy it again but only after trying many other great whiskies I haven't got round to trying yet.It does have a very nuanced taste and that's what I liked about it, it stands apart from many of the whiskies I have tried thus far.Update:I didn't know it at the time of this order, but this is the peatiest of the Islay whiskies available so although recommended, if you haven't tried a peaty malt yet then you may want to try a lighter peaty malt.Happy drinking!

This whisky gives you this warm, comforting feeling something akin sitting next to a fireplace in the winter. To me, the flavour is very tasty and interesting, it is full-bodied, and the bite comes at the end of a sip. The taste lingers for a while, which is pretty great. I find that adding water really helps to open up the whisky and releases the flavours hidden by strong bite.Professional whisky experts describe it as following.Nose: Oily and buttery nose, with toffee, nuttiness, hickory, bicarbonate of soda, rum and raisin ice cream and zest.Palate: Big rush of sweetness, in fact, it’s an explosion of sweetness, with fiery chilli heat, TCP, sweet cereals and a touch of cola syrup.Finish: Medium-length,but becomes fruity, with custard and cigar smoke. This is a drink you enjoy slowly and in small quantities, excellent as a gift or to offer to your house guests. The drink and bottle just radiate elegance and prestige. It may be a bit pricey but it is definitely worth it since it can last you a while.

I always like to have a bottle of Laphroaig in the cupboard. Our usual in the 10 year single malt and on one occasion the 15 year. When this appeared on prime day i nearly was put off buying it because my husband pointed out that it was only a 5 year then 6 months in the special casks. I said seriously, this is Laphroaig how bad can it really be? Come on a bottle for less than 25, we can't not try it!Well it has arrived and whilst it's a bit unseemly to be pouring a splash of whiskey at such an hour i was really eager to have a taste. It's really gentle on the nose, almost honeyed. In the mouth you still get the smokey peatiness of the standard 10 year but this is much less chewy and softer.A little more rounded perhaps. If the 10 year is too much in terms of peatyness then this may well suit.I think this is my new favourite. I'm not sure this will last until christmas. I'll be having a dram of this liquid silk this evening by the fire. Lovely.

Quarter cask is a non-age statement (NAS) whisky done right. I regularly visit the distillery as I love Islay and its whisky. If I remember from what a guy at the distillery said, the quarter cask has similar maturation recipe as the 10 year old up until the 8 year point and they switch it over to mature in quarter casks for a while. Can't remember how long, but I think it's less than a year. The quarter casks provide a larger surface-to-volume ratio, which accelerate the maturation process. I was very drunk when I was told this at the distillery, so don't take it as gospel but I'm reasonably certain that was what was said! Anyway, whatever they did to it they've made a real punchy peaty whisky with alot of flavour. For those reasons and the stronger alcohol content (48% compared to the ten's 40%), I prefer it to the ten year old. It's one of, if not, the best peated whisky In the £30-40 whisky price range. It's one of my regular go to whiskies.

Laphroaig (Port Ellen, Scotland) is a distillery on Islay, famous for its mostly heavily peated whisky. Other famous Islay whiskies include Bowmore, Lagavulin and Caol Ila. This whisky is first matured in bourbon casks, and then matured in small casks (quarter casks) which allow 30% more surface area contact than regular casks. This allows for faster aging of the spirit. It's thought that this whisky is about 6 years old but tastes like a 10. Islay whiskies are a funny thing for me. Love it one evening, hate it another. I reckon you really have to be in the mood for this peated monster. I've been known to spit out a mouthful! Anyway, there is smoke, iodine, sea, coffee and treacle for me but you'll probably taste something completely different. It's a wonderful bottle though (when the moods right) but more often than not I'll go for my Craigellachie when I want something easy to drink.

I only gave it 4 star for value cos its not cheap, only 3 stars for giftable cos who the hell would want to give this away as a gift to anyone unless you are so nine parts to the wind that you don't know what you're doing! I wont even share mine with any of my friends its that good I want to savour the flavour for myself & sod that at these prices, & im English not Scottish, sorry jocks didn't mean it, here's to ya for making such a good whisky to have a wee dram or 2, or 3 or 4! Doubles of course he! he! But don't tell me wife that or she wont but me another bottle. You might have tried the 10yr old now that's good but the quarter cask has that something special that you'll only get out on special occasions. You've gotta be some real sought of man to drink this, so bottoms up. You've been warned!

After trying Laphroaig's truly awful "select" I wasn't expecting much from this No Age Statement offering, but I held out hope and bottled at 48%, non chill filtered and on offer for £30 I thought I'd give Laphroaig another shot to win me over. Its a great whiskey, not as "iodiney" as the 10, its more refined the peat and iodine notes doesn't reach out and grab you by the throat like the 10 year old, the extra ABV doesn't over power the whiskey and its a relatively easy sipper (if you like peat). This is much better the 10 year old, which I find almost synthetic in its mouth feel and for me the dampening down of the medicinal notes is a benefit. Its not quite as good as the 10 Cask Strength version but for the money this is a cracking whiskyFaith in Laphroaig restored.

I'm a big fan of bold whisky, particularly the peaty/smokey Islay malts with Laphroaig been one of my all time favourites. Ignore any negative reviews complaining about medicinal comparisons. The 10 year is a standard by which to measure against. The Quarter Cask has no age statement but that does not detract from its quality. I find it to be well rounded with layered depth of flavour. The peat hits straight off but there is a hint of sweetness that matures the flavour on the palate. I always drink neat and find the QC to be engaging with a moreish quality, it's easy to quaff half a bottle without realising. I'd actually put it ahead on the 10yo. I could go on and get all technical but wanted to keep this brief.Very highly recommended, especially when on Lightening Deal!

Laphroaig Is truly one of best Islay distillerys , And they continue to produce excellent releases with consistent regularity . While I tend to prefer going for malts which contain an age statement , as this has used the quarter cask method requiring a shorter maturation It is worth overlooking on this occasion. If you are looking at buying this as a gift it is perhaps worth noting that this is probably not a good beginner whiskey as the heavy phenolic and strong peaty notes can be intimidating to a palate which is not used to it, but for anyone who adores their Islay maltyiness this is an excellent choice. The current offer on this provides superb value and I doubt if you can find a better dram anywhere on the Internet at less the twenty five quid.Cheers!

Don't really touch whisky however a review noted that it was from a quality distillery and had an outstanding taste and at almost half price I took a punt. Stunning flavour and totally unexpected smoothness which I did not expect at all from whisky. Read about the peaty flavour and they where correct, very peaty and I just loved it. Normally whisky tastes like gone off petrol, seriously. Not this, have almost finished the bottle and when the price comes down to what I paid for it this time I will purchase several fer sure. I cannot justify spending almost half a days wage on something as impractical as booze, even this quality, but it's a close call .......!

the price was very good for a laphroaig, but the whisky itself is so-so. this particular bottle had been affected too much by the wood and it had ... well, not the best aftertaste. Also the normal medicinal pungent spiciness of laphroaig wasn't as pungent, or spicy.I don't blame the seller, but i blame laphroaig's quarter cask, it's not up to scratch. (your results may vary, if your bottle comes from a different vat - this is true for all cask-strength whisky, not just this one)3 stars, but voted 4 stars because it's not the seller's fault, and .. i mean, it wasn't BAD, it just wasnt as great as i imagined it to be.

If Laphroaig 10 is McAdder bursting into your house, kilt spattered with mud, and waving his Claymore above his head (and it is) then this is him the morning after tucking into a hot bowl of hot porridge and discussing the morning papers over breakfast. Rich and 'smooth' (by which I mean low alcohol burn combined with well blended aromas and flavours), this is a full profile Laphroaig that everyone (that enjoys peated whiskies) can enjoy. Politer than the ten and more complex than the Ardbeg 10, I would not wish to be without a bottle of this in my current selection (ie on the floor, in the hall). Recommended.

Just a great value for money Peated whiskey. As a relatively new whisky drinker I had to drink a whole bottle just to get used to it. I hated it when first got my first bottle a few months back. Now I'm on my 4th and I love the stuff. Lots of flavour, it has that antiseptic, ash and tar flavour with a honey sweetness in the finish. Also at 48% there is extra value and flavour. Good to see it is not chill filtered however the barrier filtration has taken away some of the mouthfeel I suspect it would have otherwise had. This is definitely better than the 10yo and a must buy for any peat-head like me!
