As a much younger man living in Tokyo, carefree and gay*, I purchased a microwave steamer for about Y300. I don't know why I bought it - life at the time was a tumultuous social whirl of restaurants, bars, parties - but something about the simplicity of this object spoke to me. The idea of steamed vegetables without firing up scary things like gas burners or boiling water is truly a magical concept, and I've used it several times a week for around 20 years. Many years back, the inner basket broke. I moped and mourned before throwing it out... and, sobbing hysterically, retrieved it from the dustbin with a heartfelt "Sorry, old friend." I vowed to see past the damage, and it continued to give loyal service. But for at least six years I've been looking for a replacement so I can retire it, fearlessly searching the murkiest reaches of the Internet and with a Google Alert that hadn't changed since 2014. This week, I saw this similar model. But the description wasn't clear: was it really 16cm, or was it actually the larger version I owned? Was it, really, the same device, unchanged in 20 years? Had I finally found The One's worthy successor? It was almost too much to hope for. I unlocked the Amazon locker with trembling hands. And... salvation is mine. It's the same item, the same shape, design, everything. It even retrofits the old one. A younger, fresher, and somewhat cleaner clone of my most treasured kitchen appliance, ready to give another 20 years of loyal service.Fear not, old steamer. You shall remain a part of my life. But your decade of faithful toil are now done.* Not that kind.

Works very well for steaming vegetables and as a microwave pan. I've used a rice steamer in a different brand for the last 5 years with great results but it's almost 3 times the price of this set. I struggled to achieve good results using the steamer insert to cook rice but was able to cook it in the pan by simply covering the rice with water and using the absorption method. It's pretty easy to keep an eye on cooking time, the water and steam disappear and the rice starts to look quite dry. It had no problem tackling brown rice and I simply use the water left over after steaming vegetables to take advantage of the vegetable stock. The pan handles on either side are useful but the little handle on top of the lid is located between the vent holes where scalding steam escapes, a silly oversight as it makes the handle unusable and unsafe! You can pick up the lid by grasping the sides but this is slightly more awkward. Washes up well in the dishwasher, doesn't appear to stain or hold food smells, tried it out with onions-my killer test for smell absorption and no nasty whiff after washing up, then put it through the paces by stewing apple with summer berries-frankly I was expecting it to fail this test but washed up without a trace of staining....I'm impressed! Not much this little bit of kit can't do-even used it for porridge (without the lid on). Unless I'm cooking up a big batch in my 6 litre saucepan the smaller pots have become virtually redundant. Bought a second one of these after the first week as I was using it more than once a day, then bought one for my Mum as well!

This is the best steamer for microwave you can buy! I being using for over 7 yrs ; i used to buy @ John Lewis but they get greedy and start make the own brand no half quality compared to this one. The think with microwave steamers are the base were you place the water is to thin making dangerous wen you remove from the microwave + dont steam the food properly as isnt enough space for water. This one as you can see in the picture the base cover all the steamer area so no just sit @ the top but place inside the base making safe for handle and giving you the space for the amount of water for the time you need.I used in the past for make single dinners as is big enough for a meat + vegetables ;now i weaning my twins and is extremely useful too.The quality is really good ; plus the cover is well made so you dont burn your hands for remove. Look no further as you did find the best one.

I wanted a steamer to get a large amount of veg in in a relatively small microwave. It had to be BPA free. I love the Sistema products but could only fit the small steamer in my microwave as their steamers are square.I emailed Kitchen Craft direct before buying and received an email back the same day advising me that ALL their products are BPA free. The steamer is the perfect size. Enough room for a whole head of broccoli and two leeks chopped up; and probably a bit more.It is white so may stain, I can live with that and will soak it in bicarb overnight if needed.Diameter is approx. 18 cm without the little handles on the lid approx just under 24cm with handles. The diameter of my microwave turntable is 24cm so a perfect fit.

I use this a couple of times a week and have done over the past 8 months or more. It is as good today as it was when I bought it. There is no discolouration of the basket and it still looks good. I use this to prepare fresh vegetables as my smaller one doesn't cope well with fresh veg. Follow the instructions, I would suggest a minute less at first then check your vegetables. You will soon work out the best time. The only issue I ever have is when doing frozen sprouts with other veg. I now give the sprouts an extra minute before adding the rest of the veg. This is probably big enough to do veg for 3 people but no more not unless you like small portions.I find this is the most economical way to produce nice vegetables.

This microwave steamer was bought to replace a similar one that I had for many years but had to replace because one of the handles eventually broke off. I had also previously bought a sistema microwave steamer but it doesn't get used much because it was too fiddly to clip the lid on.This steamer appears to be quite well made and is sufficient size for our needs. It does seem to take longer to cook than our old one but it recommends that you put one cup of water in before cooking whereas our old one recommended a couple of tablespoons. I also like the fact that you can invert the lid when storing it which saves space. It's been in use several times a week since I bought it and works well.

Quite a good microwave cooking utensil, but takes longer to cook rice than some of the other reviewers suggested, although our microwave is high-powered and I started with boiling water. Important to make sure the water covers the rice otherwise at the end of the cooking time the grains are hard and uncooked - I discovered this at my first attempt! The rice (white or brown) is definitely more fluffy and less sticky than cooking by other means (on the hob or in the microwave minus a steamer). I haven't tried vegetables in it as I use a pressure cooker for them, but it would probably be OK for small quantities. 5 stars had there been proper cooking instructions enclosed.

A really useful piece of equipment to have in the kitchen. The product feels sturdy whereas a previous rice steamer (from a different manufacturer) was less so and eventually cracked by the handles. The size of this steamer is great for rice for 1 or 4+ people. Just be careful of the steam once you have removed it from the microwave - it is hard to see the holes on the lid so easy to get fingers caught by the heat. Kitchencraft might like to think of away of highlighting the holes with some sort of colour (?), so you don't put your fingers above them. having said that I am very happy with my choice. Great value.

This microwave steamer is simple, well constructed of non brittle plastic and is of a generous size.Previous ones that I have had have been clear plastic and have cracked or been damaged by dishwashers.Only one basket so no separate compartments but that is no real downside.I have taken a star off as most of these sort of steamers include a guide to help time different foods. Fortunately I have one from a previous steamer I just hope that the different size doesn’t make a difference.Delivery was quick so full marks to the seller.

This is my third similar item I have bought over ten years. As I am over 80 and live alone it is a brilliant piece of kitchen equipment, and it is also the cheapest. I can have my five portions of of vegetables 3 or 4 times a week without any bother all cooked at the same time. I just give any root vegetables 12 minutes and add any greens after 6 minutes and they all come out perfectly cooked and leaves the minimum of washing up. Great for students or folks living alone. A brilliant idea that really works.

I was given a microwave steamer and realised it is the best thing for cooking rice, perfect results every time, no more under done or done to mush! It is a good size but I won't cook popcorn in it again as my last one melted. My only critisism is that the handles are not big enough to lift it out with oven gloves on as it does get very hot. My last one was a thicker plastic but apart from that it is an invaluable piece of cookware. As ever Amazon delivered promptly with secure packaging.

I cook vegetables in the microwave almost every day and have tried many dishes/bowls/containers which were meant to be specifically made for that purpose. The best I found so far is Tupperware and this Kitchencraft item. As the Tupperware dishes are so much more expensive I would say this item wins. I would have given it 5 stars if it wasn't for a slight discolouring of the cream outer container (especially when you cook carrots). But great results every time I use it.

cooks rice brilliantly, just remember to put boiling water in and make sure the water covers the rice, 10 to 12 mins on full power, leave it for 5 mins in the microwave to finish off. All the starchy water ends up in the bottom and the rich is firm and not soggy at all.I've started to tape the top down when cooking rice as it tends to bubble up and the water spills out, this is a design fault and a simple twist lock on it would do the job, hence only 4 stars.

I must say it's a great idea for a product. I never used to steam veggies, mostly boiling or roasting them, but wanted something for my baby and her weaning. It takes very little time to steam the veggies and the fruit, it's not messy and easy to clean (dishwasher safe) and the veggies taste so well! They retain their taste, unlike during boiling. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because the tray got discoloured first time I used it when I was steaming carrots.

This has just been delivered, it is much neater than the steamer I have been using and the handles will make it safe to use, a small handbook would have been appreciated. all information is printed on the box, the print is too small and indistinct to be of any use to me. Fortunately we are not strangers to microwave steaming so it could have been worse. Four stars for a neat and useful steamer five stars if there had been a small handbook enclosed.
