Like many of you I have used an electric mixer to make mashed potatoes, and what I ended up with was a mess of glue like potatoes. Not appealing in any way. I had an old potato masher that I used, but it broke. I look upon that occasion as a stroke of luck. This potato masher is the best I have ever used, and makes the best mashed potatoes. First of all, you should always make sure your potatoes are as dry as possible. After draining the potatoes, leave them in the pan over med heat until you are sure they are dry. Then place them in a receptacle that is deep and wide enough to mash. The oversize handle is so easy to use and is great for mashing. The wide head of the masher eliminates any lumps, but if you want a few lumps leave them. Mix butter and a small amount of warm cream, salt and pepper into the potatoes, and you will have the most delicious mashed potatoes you have ever had.Oxo is the brand to buy for most household/kitchen tools. They are well priced, and always well made. You can depend upon this brand. I found this brand after reading Jessica Seinfeld's blog. You can either hand wash the masher or put it in your dishwasher, it is your choice.Recommended. prisrob 08-16-14

Let's face it, a potato masher isn't the most glamorous of kitchen must-have gadgets. And no, unlike most products, this one doesn't come with a DVD that you have to install before use, or a large A2 fold out sheet with Ikea-styled instructions. Nope, this is a potato masher. But it's just fantastic. This is the equivalent of using a sharp bread knife to cut through a crusty french loaf, as apposed to a butter knife. On the face of it, there's not a huge difference between this and the majority of other potato mashers on the market. Yet the horizontally mounted handle makes ALL the difference. It really makes you beg the question as to why traditional potato mashers are all designed with an upright shaft that painfully digs into the palm of your hand as you apply downward pressure. Not any more, not with this one. It's a joy to use and just plain-and-simple, works. Is there any point in describing the actual mash? No, not really. It's mash. But the fact the handle is horizontal, and has a nice soft-grip material to hold onto, makes the boring process of mashing ye plain olde potatoes somewhat more pleasurable than it used to. A definite must-have.

I've had one of these for years. I was just looking one up on amazon to buy one for my Mum, who always comments on the good design (she has arthritis), and I noticed what a lot of negative reviews it had. Wondering what the issues were, I skimmed over themI have no idea who wrote them, but the idea that you can buckle this thing easily is such rubbish I felt moved to type this. I could buckle it by putting my full weight on it, but the metal is about as thick as a butter knife's blade. The idea that a cooked potato could inadvertantly buckle it is either written by someone trying to mash a raw potato, or someone who is deliberately writing a negative reviewMy wrist has never been full strength from breaking it years ago,and traditional potato mashing always aggravated it. but this allows you to 'punch' potatoes/whatever in the most natural and forceful way. I would recommend it to anyone who cooks potatoes before mashing them. I actually bought mine after seeing Jamie Oliver mash a load of stock up in a saucepan with one and looked for ages before finding one in John Lewis

I have had the same masher for years, my kids hated it and hated using it, but as it was still functional I hadn't bothered to replace it as to my mind it was doing the job.Well a few weeks ago it broke to huge cheers and comments on the fact I now had to replace it and buy a new one. After spending ages looking around and comparing different ones I took the plunge and choose this one.I am so glad I choose this one it's fantastic, it's far easier to use than my old one .The actual mashing grid is a lot larger than others I have had over the years and the design makes it much easier and quicker to get things done. The grip is quite large so making it a lot easier to just plunge the masher downwithout losing your grip .All in all I love this masher and it looks like it's going to last an age as it is so well put together and sturdily built.

I was looking for a masher I could use despite having rheumatoid arthritis and peripheral neuropathy, and this one is perfect. Its nicely made with no sharp bits and it washes really well, but more than that it makes the exercise of mashing anything - potatoes, butternut squash, carrots, whatever you are wanting to squish, a much easier exercise than it had been before with my conventionally shaped/designed mashers. It takes a lot of the effort out of the wrist, and the orientation of the grip makes it much easier to work with, I am only wondering why it took me so long to realise I needed this gadget in my kitchen. Definitely recommended, and my husband - who does not have any disability - is just as happy as I am with it,we still have our old mashers but he always uses this one when it's his turn to do the veggies. Definitely recommended.

I have been using this masher for over two years now on a pretty regular basis, at least four times a week, mashing such things as potatoes, carat and swede and anything else that needs mashing. and this masher has with stood the test of time. When i first bought this i red that someone had said that the little rivets that attach the handle to the masher head are weak and snap easily, but i have had no such issue and i have really hammered this masher over the years. It mashes things perfectly due to the good size holes in the head and it is a doddle to clean as there are no small bits that food can hide inside.the handle is hard yet comfortable and makes gripping it a pleasure and the way that it is used makes mashing so simple.in all,if you like to mash then this will come in handy

I have the silicone coated version of this masher and it is absolutely great. I cannot understand why stick handle mashers are still being produced when this design is so simple to use and does not hurt your hand. I would recommend purchasing the silicone coated one if you can find it as it is both safe to use in non-stick pans and also washes very easily as the potato does not stick. I always use a ricer for potatoes before mashing in some grated cheese, so it doesn't have to do a difficult job with potato. However, I also prepare batches of root vegetable mash using carrot, turnip, parsnips and roasted butternut squash and sweet potato, and I use this masher to roughly break the veg down before freezing in portions. So easy to use and to wash afterwards.

I love this. For some reason, I've never gotten on with potato mashers. Either the bottom part, that does the mashing (don't have a clue what the technical name is) sprains or similarly fails to do the job, or the handle buckles. This design is beautifully simple and distributes pressure across the whole masher. It's easy to grip (I would imagine it's very practical for people with reduced dexterity as well), and does the job in a fraction of the time of "traditional" mashers.I can genuinely say, this is one of the most practical purchases I've ever made. Would definitely recommend.

I am a mush potato lover - I hate it when you have a masher that seems impossible to get rid of lumps no matter how long your cook your potatoes for. I LOVE creamy buttery mash and I find it hard to get this with most other mashers unless I whip them as well (very American) however this is a fab product - felt that it was a bit expensive for a masher however it is a really good brand - thought give it a whirl and see if it works. well blow me over it is like a magic instrument for making perfect mash!!!

I'm a big fan of OXO kitchen products as I already have their garlic press and pepper grinder and they're super quality. This masher is the same, its really well made, comfortable to hold and press down, and no nooks and crannies for potato to get stuck in. I handwash my implements so I can't say how good the rubberised handle will last in a dishwasher, but so far for me it's been great. It's a massive leap forward compared to the type that are shaped like loo plungers.

As the title says, it's the best potato mashed we've ever had! The design with the handle makes it a lot easier to mash both potatoes and other vegetables. It's easy to clean, it is a little trickier to store it as it doesn't fit with the rest of the utensils but seeing as it stands up itself I found a place for it easily even in our smaller kitchen. It seems really strong and will hopefully last for years and years, the black handle at the top is very comfortable.

Our old M&S masher had died, the handle was loose and it made it difficult to use so I was browsing for a new one. When I saw this one i was intrigued. Its great, far easier to use than conventional ones, and leaves mash smooth and creamy without lumps, and takes much less effort to use. If like me you've damaged hand joints the grip placement and the fact its got absorbent properties means its comfortable to use.It feels robust enough to last a long while too.

After my favourite masher decided to give in to constant usage I went to the local supermarket but all I could get were ones that either tried to drill a hole in your palm or were so flimsy that after use the masher part was concave and had to be straightened out before the next meal that consisted of mashed potatoes. This masher is excellent, allows for more pressure to be exerted and subsequently it take less time to prepare good creamy mash.

Ever since buying this masher I've been recommending it to everyone I know. Quite simply, it's great. It mashes potato (or other veg) far more quickly and smoothly than any other I've ever used.I'm really surprised by some of the reviews claiming that it's flimsy as I've found it extremely robust and - unlike other mashers I've used in the past - the mashing surface hasn't buckled or bent at all, even after several years of frequent use.

I have had as arthritis since the age of 11. I cope with most things but mashing potatoes is one of the hardest domestic tasks I encounter on a weekly basis. Most mashers are either hard to hold or have a hanging loop which doesn't make it easy if your hand can't adapt. This masher would be easy for anyone to use. As long as push gently down, with one or two hands, you will be able to mash potatoes with ease. Brilliant, brilliant product.
