I've trialled various Purina foods with different dogs and dog-owners and so far they've all been received by the dogs with great relish. There have been no turned-up noses - and no upset tummies or runny bottoms! So, a winner with all the dogs and converts won among the owners. This particular food is no exception - happy dog, happy owner.Complete foods are a convenient way of giving your dog all the nutrients it needs for a heathy balanced diet (and also dry foods mean drier stools that are easier to pick up in a doggy waste bag!). The pack contains a helpful feeding guide based on activity level as well as weight. The packaging is well-designed with a good-sized opening,a grab handle and a re-sealable top (to prevent the food going stale or smelling out the kitchen - though the food isn't smelly) which is easy to use.Purina is a premium brand that comes in at a premium price, though this larger pack is certainly better value - RRP £51.45, currently selling at £34.90 or £2.49 per kilo (a much better price per kilo than the 3 kilo bags, which seem to be far more expensive than feeding your dog 100% chicken!). With a larger dog, that's certainly welcome. This is a chicken-based food, though chicken content is only 14%. The majority of the food consists of dehydrated poultry protein (which I don't have a problem with), wheat and maize, and there's also soya and gluten (both known potential allergens) in there as well as a mystery ingredient simply called "Digest", unnamed minerals and fish oil (which means there's no need to mix it in with the food separately). Total protein content is higher than other foods in the range at 26% but the fat content is lower at 12% - after all, this is food for "robust" (for which read "fat") dogs. In comparison, over half the RSPCA dog food is chicken meal and rice (£35 for 12 kilos). This complete dry pet food is part of the new Opti-nutrition range from Purina designed to meet the specific needs of different sizes, ages and conditions of dogs by the inclusion of targeted combinations of nutrients given names such as OptiPower, OptiAge, OptiDigest, OptiHealth and OptiDerma. It can be hard to know whether the claims made for various dog foods are valid or not without being a doggy nutritionist, but of course the starting point has to be whether your dog(s) will eat the food or not!I do worry a bit that the enthusiasm with which dogs wolf down these dry foods means they're a bit like MacDonalds - food that has a lot of science in it and is engineered to taste great so you want more and is healthy up to a point, but shouldn't be relied on as the main source of food, just as a treat. It isn't explained what some of the ingredients are or what others are for. There may be good reasons but I'm afraid I can't tell the difference between a helpful additive and a cheap filler that's bulking out the product, hence 4 stars despite the dog's enthusiasm.Loses a point because, although good value compared to smaller packs in the same range, I don't understand (because it's not explained) what the various ingredients are for, and some of them aren't specified in any detail.

Another Dry Dog food from Purina. This time the food is formulated for large robust dogs of which we have one, a 35kg hound of mixed parentage.I have tried out various bags of the Purina brand of dog foods for a number of weeks now and in line with my previous experience have found the quality and consistency to be very good. Our dog has never turned his nose up or refused to eat the food. While in general the dog food does not have a particularly high meat content compared to a tin of meat it seems to satisfy the dog, fill him up, give him enough energy for dashing around for a few hours on his twice daily walks. Following the feeding guidelines he is also neither overweight or too thin.I don't worry too much about a perceived lack of meat as the food is fortified with everything he needs.Occasionally we add a small amount of meat to the dry food as a treat, mainly little dog food pouches that I have previously reviewed yet even when we do not add anything extra the bowl is always emptied and I expect this is down to the meaty smell and that it tastes good. This brand of food has never left our dog with an upset stomach and has always been agreeable with him though it does appear that for every daily feed of around 450-500g split between two meals he produces twice the amount of waste. It could be down to the high fibre content or maybe the children are feeding him titbits when my back is turned. Sometimes the stool can be loose and this is a problem when picking up.Since using only Purina brands he no longer has smelly dog breath, though his teeth have very slight build up they are generally in good order.A true bonus of buying the dry dog food online is that I don't have to cart around a 14kg sack of it as it it delivered straight to my door. The Purina brands tend to be a little more expensive averaging just over £1/500g a day in feed, more than some other dog foods. A 14kg sack lasts about month for us.In conclusion, our dog eats this dry food without complaint and the Purina brand tends to be a consistent and quality dog food. The present offer price makes it better value for your money though if sold at full price I would consider my options.

As an experiment I put a few pieces of this kibble in a bowl next to some of our usual kibble. Our fussiest eater went straight for this and scoffed it down, ignoring the "usual" food. Purina have clearly put a lot of effort into making this food tasty and attractive to dogs, but this does slightly concern me too. The list of ingredients for this food is not impressive for the price - "poultry protein", wheat filler and 14% chicken. Our usual food is Wainwrights and is more expensive, but with a much more impressive ingredient list - 38% rice, 30% turkey and no wheat filler. So it concerns me that the Purina attracts the dogs more effectively with a much cheaper looking ingredient list.Have Nestle treated it with something to make it smell good to dogs?Having said all that, our two dogs have suffered no ill effects from the food. Their coats are shiny (no less than the Wainwrights) and it keeps our old Black Labrador pretty mobile in spite of her arthritis. In terms of toilet habits (you need to know!), it makes one of our dogs go more often (three or four times a day rather than twice) but it seems to have made our Black Labrador less regular (once a day rather than twice). However, their deposits in the bank of poo remain firm!So the jury is still out. I think it is a good dog food, though I worry about the quality of the ingredients for the price. When this bag is finished I will go back to the Wainwright's but will keep an open mind about Purina for the future.UPDATE: One month on and our 11 year-old Black Labrador is still eating this food. Her coat seems shinier and her mobility does seem to have improved. However, I remain concerned about her irregular toilet habits which are now completely random where she was regular before. Nevertheless we are impressed with her mobility and may keep her on this food. Our other dog went off this food after a couple of weeks and is back on the Wainwright's - eating it with renewed gusto.

This is marketed as a kibble suitable for large robust dogs, which encompasses breeds such as Newfoundlands, Giant Schnauzers, Old English Sheepdogs, Briards, etc.We have a large sized Springer who is quite keen on her food to say the least, I did hope that this larger kibble would help her to eat more slowly. The pieces appear crunchier and to take longer to eat than the standard working dog kibble that is her normal diet, which is definitely a good thing. When she takes longer over her food she is far less likely to ask for snacks later on, or to go on bin raids. She is neutered and keeping her weight under control is a concern. The large pieces of kibble are particularly good for dental health, for dogs of all sizes which is a large plus point, as concern over poor dental health linked to soft food consumption is one of the reasons that many owners initially establish / switch to a dry food diet. This isn't particularly high in protein compared with some premium dog foods, the protein source is chiefly chicken. However it certainly goes down well, she enjoyed her food and definitely knew that this was something new and exciting in her bowl. For multi-dog households that may have breeds of different sizes, the large dog kibble is fine for medium sized dogs, but will be too much for small breeds. The real concern with this kibble is the value. It's cheaper to feed dogs on turkey mince than it is on this chicken based kibble. For the smaller bags, chicken breasts work out cheaper! The meat content really doesn't reflect the price and there are many premium dog foods on the market that provide greater quality meat/protein content at an equal or even lower price. Your dog will probably love it, though.

We have a 6 month old retriever/Newfie mix member of the family and while puppy food is available, the vet said feeding him adult food at this point would do him no harm and would probably help keep his growth slowed down. With this in mind, we accepted this and since he was currently finishing up a bag of Beta large puppy food, we bag to mix this in to help him transition without upset. He accepted the food well and soon was scarfing down the adult food. At 30 kgs, he is towards the bottom of the weight range for the food, but given he is still growing, he won't stay that way. Having given him the adult dog food exclusively for the past fortnight, I have not noted any change in his stools or changes in his energy, coat, etc, though at his weigh in, he did weigh a little less than anticipated, though it was in proportion to his current build stature, so his overall growth has indeed slowed. It's too soon yet to say if that is a result of changing to this food, so I'll just leave that there. I wouldn't feed this to a young puppy who has just been weaned onto kibble, but an older puppy like ours seems to do just fine. Having said that, he's coming to the end of the bag and I am going to place him on the puppy version of this food for a few more months as his regular feed. Price wise , it's not the cheapest, but given that I don't have to add anything to it and that it offers the extra joint support and so on that the giant breeds require, I think it's well worth it. It's certainly less expensive than Iams and the like which are of similar quality and much better for him than cheap supermarket foods.

This is my first experience with Purina dog food. With two strong, active German Shepherd dogs, each weighing over 45 kgs, I thought this particular food for robust dogs may be suitable. However, initially I did have reservations, as both of my German Shepherds have been notorious for having 'sensitive stomachs' that have historically suffered adverse reactions when changing foods. My reservations proved to be unfounded. Upon opening the sealed bag the quality and consistency immediately appeared to be very good.As soon as I placed their dog food bowls down my German Shepherds began eating straight away. As they did so their tails were actually wagging. This had never happened before. Both didn't stop till they had finished and then they both checked each others bowls to see if anything was left. They had obviously enjoyed the Purina food and all that remained was to see how they digested it. No problems there either. After having used this Purina food for a week now, each meal time has been a repeat of the above and I have been absolutely delighted with the response of my dogs. Both seem to be in the peak of health, full of energy and to have experienced absolutely no digestive problems.I would not hesitate to recommend this particular brand of Purina dog food and will continue to use this brand in the future. The only thing that has bothered me slightly is the price, but I suppose you get what you pay for.

PURINA PRO PLAN Dog Large Adult Robust with OPTIHEALTH Rich in Chicken Dry Food, 14kgHere's what I thought:^^ First and foremost, my dogs loved it! Can't argue with that.^^ OptiHEALTH is designed for optimum long term health for a wide range of tastes and sizes. This one is for large adults and it's made with chicken.^^ 14 KG is a MASSIVE quantity, and that's just what is needed with big dogs as smaller packets just don't last long enough. Even when I don't feed them just this.^^ I like to vary my dogs diet supplying kibble like this as a mixer with fresh food (home cooked and specially prepared) and some cans of wet meat, too. I think that is why they are so fit and healthy - variation.Plus this saves a little money, too. Having big dogs can be costly, but I don't want to scrimp on quality or my dogs' health.^^ Developed by Purina vets and nutritionists, so a trusted brand I have heard of.^^ Supposed to keep my dogs' at optimum health, with total so if anything does this I am happy to help them by providing the tools for the trade.Overall:I am happy to provide this to my dogs knowing that the brand is a trusted and reliable company and of course, it's a bonus when my dogs love it, since it is then money not wasted but indeed well spent. Don't forget, I do not give my dogs just this dry food diet and insist on a balanced and varied selection for my happy huge hounds.

A reasonable quality dog kibble aimed at larger breed dogs. We have a 4 year old bernese who clearly enjoys this kibble. He shows no adverse after effects such as loose stools or bad breath, etc, He clears his bowl with gusto. The kibble size is nice and large so as to give him plenty to crunch on, which helps keep his teeth clean. So no complaints from him. As with most quality kibbles aimed at larger breeds the Purina Pro Plan contain many of the minerals that help maintain good joint mobility, particularly important for older adults. There's the usual maize and other binding and bulking out ingredients, as well as dehydrated poultry protein additives. The real meat content comes in at around 14%.Not the highest for a dog food in this price bracket by any stretch, but combined with the other additives is not criminally low by any means either. All in all I'd rate this as a quite good food. Not the best but not the worse within this price bracket. As always the larger 14kg bag works out far more economical than buying smaller bags and Amazon are selling at a good discount as I write. So if your dog likes it and its in your price range its probably a good value buy.

I decided to try this Purina Pro Plan Large Adult Robust with Optihealth Rich in Chicken Dry food for my 3 year old Basset. The food comes in a 14kg bag, and consists of decent sized pieces of kibble. Dolly is a greedy madam, and being a Basset, is prone to being overweight, so her eating habits and food intake do have to be monitored! She would, if left to her own devices, eat anything that she could find, and this proved to be the case when I inadvertently forgot to re-seal the bag, and she decided to help herself copiously! She definitely enjoys and likes this food, and Purina is a brand that I know and trust, and have fed to my dogs previously,so I was confident that there would be no adverse effects upon giving Dolly this particular food. The food is marketed as being the foundation for optimal health and well-being for your dog, and I can see no reason to argue with that!! Dolly loves it, never refuses to eat it, she is happy and healthy, and that is all I ask for. I am happy to recommend this food or rather, Dolly is!!

Check if you dog has a cereal allergy before feeding this. This Purina Pro Plan dry dog food has been developed for large breed robust dogs, of which I have two - they are a similar size but very different energy levels. One will dash about all day while the other is a lazy lump who sometimes has to be dragged on a walk! So I liked the fact that this food gives you measurement guidelines not just according to size but also according to the amount of hours of activity each day.The dogs were very interested in the box as soon as it arrived, and both come running as soon as they realise I'm putting their food out - I store the food in a big plastic bin, and it's a bonus that these biscuits don't give off any largely noticeable smell. The dogs eat it very eagerly, and it seems to be very well digested by them - we've had no upset tummies, and both dogs are looking well. To me it's a bonus to be able to buy these foods online, as they are large, heavy bags, and it's great to have them simply arrive at the door!

Trig's tried a lot of dog food over the last few months and from a mix and match point of view the Pro Plan range of foods are the one he had the most of. One good thing (probably) is they purportedly all taste of chicken, the only differences are in the size of the kibble and the make up. trig's an ex working dog so is used, and we've kept it going, to an active life. He is getting on (middle aged) so anything that will prolong the life of his joints, preserve kidney function and keep his teeth clean, whilst providing him with a balanced diet is good. Purina tick all the boxes in that respect. This would last about 25-28 days so isn't bad in terms of price per day.Because Trig's used to the brand we didn't need to titrate it against other food he's eating, he ate the lot, no waste and it didn't appear to have a deleterious effect at the other end either - which is always a bonus when you're trying something that is different.

Thumbs up from our dog so far for this food! Previously she had purina pro plan large adult athletic lamb and rice and now that purina have stopped making this flavour in their new range which as I understand it is all chicken based, we have started integrating this new food into what we have left of her old, a little bit more each day for about a week now and there haven't been any problems, complaints or upsets so far at all, touch wood she seems just as keen and happy. She is probably more robust than athletic at times so I don't think the difference is a big issue. We have been happy with the purina pro plan food she has had all her life thus far, she is four and a bit, and she is about 45kg.We will continue with this food if it continues to go down well with her, just need to keep an eye on her poop to check no tummy problems too, seems fine so far, and it's brilliant to be able to get this delivered in the large bags.

As soon as the food was delivered the dog was sniffing the packaging and then began to whimper and whine! Always a good first step for our fussy eater! Our dog fits the "robust large dog" category, being a 35kg weimaraner gundog. She has a sensitive tummy and can get bored with the same food. Getting her to eat a full bowl can be challenge sometimes. While this new food does have novelty value she really enjoys it.Good quality ingredients make a big difference to health but they do cost significantly more. We resisted paying nearly £50 for a sack of food, but with good quality food we have seen the incidence of upset tummies reduced significantly. This food offers good nutrition and includes ingredients that help with joint care. Our dog already has arthritis, but the ingredients will help slow its progression.A good quality and tasty food for bigger dogs.

Good quality food, it seems high in meat content according to the manufacturer but only 14% when looking at the ingredients. The dog seems to enjoy it, but then again my greedy lab will eat anything you put in front of him. Changing his food usually results in him being a bit loose when he goes to the toilet for the first couple of days but so far I haven't noticed an issue since he's been eating this.Comes in a large bag and fairly heavy at 14kg, easy to open and reseal, which is needed around my dog as he has a tendency to get into the bags if you're not careful. Retails for £55, which seems a lot for dog food. In the past I've paid around the £30 mark for a bag of dog food that usually lasts a month, but not sure I'd be brave enough to pay £50 for something that goes in one end and comes out the other all within the space of half an hour.
