Just like a baby has different nutritional requirements from an adult, puppies have different needs than the adult dogs that they are destined to grow into. Giving your puppy a good start in life is the best thing you can do to ensure a happy and healthy future. All puppies need the basics - precise nutrition, time to play and lots of love - but puppies have individual needs, as well. We tend to think of the early years as the "healthy years" and therefore may not give enough consideration to feeding practices. Because of variables like eventual size, breed, age, environment, activity levels, heredity issues and many other factors a "one size fits all" approach to dog (in this case puppy)nutrition doesn't cut it.Inappropriate nutritional intake can increase your puppy's risk of obesity, overly fast growth, growth-related musculo-skeletal problems, bone development disorders and a poorly functioning immune system.Puppies and growing young dogs need precise levels of essential nutrients to maximise their health potential . To meet their specific growth and development needs they require a puppy food with increased amounts of energy, protein and calcium compared to adult dogs. While using breed-specific dog food might be over-doing it, getting a balanced feed that is matched the needs of your 'type' of dog (large, small, house pet, working breed etc ) is important. A large athletic breed puppy needs a puppy food formulated to ensure proper bone and muscle growth and the right amount of energy. This stuff ticks all the the boxes. Recommended for owners of large active puppies such as working retrievers, setters, briards, pointers, hungarian vislas, borzois and deerhounds etc etc.

PURINA PRO PLAN Dog Large Puppy Athletic with OPTISTART Rich in Chicken Dry Food, 3kgThis is one of Purina’s new tailored diet products for dogs. I have tried a lot of the range on my, friends and my parents dogs.Ingredients.The ingredients are listed on the back. I always look for the ash content as this is an indicator of the amount of non-nutritional filler used. In this product it is 7% which is quite low compared to cheaper foods.I wish manufacturers would be clearer about the ingredients as there are three separate listings in this food about the actual ingredients. It does contain wheat and soya protein which should be noted if you dog has an allergy problem with either ingredients.Bag.The food comes in a resalable strong bag for easy storage and decanting. There is a detailed feeding guide on the back.Taste test.Fed to my neighbours Springer puppies. They rally liked it and none was left over. There has been no change to their bowl movements with two regular outings a day. So this has been a great success. As the food is low in fattening ingredients and high in growth ingredients like proteins. This is ideal for growing and active young dogs. With this food Purina seem to have got it right although it’s quite expensive.Overall.The food is palatable has had no adverse effect on bowl movements so can be considered a success. There has been no waste. It is marketed as a premium product but the ingredients listed are common to most foods, it seems only the amounts of more quality ingredients vary between ranges. Overall this is a successful food in the range of premium dag foods. It is quite expensive so try a sample before buying in bulk.

As with other Purina Pro Plan products the large puppy athletic kibble offers a specially tailored dry food for pups of a specific breed and type. 'Large Athletic' covers breeds such as large sight hounds (Greyhounds, Salukis, Afghans, etc.) along with Pointer breeds (German Shorthaired Pointers, Weimaraners etc.)Having tried several of these Purina range kibbles the food appears visually identical to that of others in the range, adult kibble being larger than puppy kibble. These are small sized kibbles, suitable for puppy mouths from around 8 weeks of age and through the first year of life. It's fairly low in protein, at 17%, and does have a lot of bulking agent for a premium priced product. For this reason, I am reluctant to give it five stars, and four is generous. However, dogs don't read labels. This was fed to a young and very active Springer - not a large puppy breed - who absolutely loved it, leaving a clean bowl and looking for more. He has quite a sensitive stomach at times, but it was well-tolerated.The contents may not justify the price, though dogs do enjoy this and other reviews would appear to agree.

We have a 17 week old puppy that is a Newfoundland/Golden retriever crossbreed. His stomach has proved to be a bit on the sensitive side and we've gone through a few different foods to see what he stomachs best while allowing him to grow slowly (he appears to take mostly after the Newfie parent and too fast a growth puts a strain on their body). With some foods, his stools were looser than we'd have liked. With others, everything was great but the cost was extremely prohibitive. This food has kept his stools fairly firm, but the protein is a bit higher than we'd like. We compromised by adding cooked potatoes (rice made his stools worse) to his ration and his stools not only firmed up more, but seems to have struck a balance with his growth (you can really see his growth change week to week). The fish oils in the food have helped keep his coat feeling silky.Overall, I'd have to say this is a good dog food, though not perfect. The price is still a bit on the high side so I will continue to search for the "perfect fit" for both our wallet and pup.

At the moment, being fed to a large lively Lab puppy, Purina's Pro Plan range of feeds are apparently created to cater for the physiological changes which occur as young dogs develop.Obviously as dogs get bigger they develop their musculature and bone structure. Development which requires a regime of appropriate vitamin, protein and minerals to service this development. At 17% the meat content (chicken) is not particularly high but the mix is made up of a calorie rich supplement of poultry protein, Wheat and rice, gluten, soya meal, maize, animal fat, dried beet pulp and fish oil. It's not a bad idea to supplement a food regime with some table scraps such as dinner left overs which give the animal a bit of variety and in the case of vegetables and rice, some fibre. Eating nothing but dried food without giving the dog some fresh food is- some vets suggest- not a good idea as it can cause problems in later life. However, nothing wrong with making a quality dried feed like this Purina mix, the main staple of his/her diet.

To be honest pups are very active and as such they need something that not only fills their bellies but something that will help them get the energy they need to grow as well as play. This product from Purina is a solid enough product to do that job and whilst the meat content is a little bit on the low side, I have to say that its gone down a treat in our house. Yes it is a complete food but like a fair number of dog owners I know I tend to give them a mix of fresh meat as well as biscuits. Its a great way to make sure that they get everything and its also a great way to bulk it out a bit more so that you don't notice the cost as much. All round, so far its been a good item for our puppy and when you add no change to his stool, all round means that I know that I'm giving him the best start I can.

Once you eliminate all the fancy marketing lingo and numerous graphic representations of various bits of the dog's anatomy and focus on the small print, there is not enough actual meat in this product to justify the price. It seems that on the surface of it, they invested more money and effort into designing the packaging than the actual dog food itself, but if the proof is in the pudding, my dog likes this food so I can't really complain. I like to give my dog various food every few days, so I got few different varieties targeted for different issues dog's might have - real ones as well as imaginary ones. It didn't affect my dog's digestions, she is as happy and cheerful as ever and the bowl is always clean.

This is a crunchy kibble for puppies up to the age of 2 years ( larger dogs). It is very appealing to dogs, from the reaction of mine it was like Christmas had arrived! But more importantly it has a good mixture of ingredients to make sure that all the needs of a growing dog are being met. It also has colostrum, which is found in mothers milk to help with the immune systems development.I have had a very positive repose from my dog and no problems at all ( dodgy tum, terrible wind..the usual signs that something is wrong) so as they say I would recommend it to a friend.

This is a great dog food, especially if you have a dog as active as mine. This is not the first time I have used this, having used it in the past I knew the dog would love it.It comes well packaged in a strong, resealable bag to keep it fresh. I like to think I feed my dogs well, and this contains a number of nutrients and other adaptations to suit a healthy, active dog.I would certainly buy it again, as the dog loves it. However, the one drawback is the price, for me, this is a little too expensive for the amount you get.

My only complaint about the Purina Pro plan range is the huge number of varieties. If as I do you have more than one dog with different requirements you may choose a more universal brand. All those I have tried on mg doggies have gone down well, and are easy to store and pleasant to handle. Strangely, little doggy seems to prefer larger kibble. There is a choice of pack size, so this 3kg bag suits me as it firs in a kitchen cupbard. I dont have space for a big sack, although it can work out cheaper.

Pellets are not too soft nor too hard for a puppy. These are for your larger puppies like labs or dane's or whippets. Wolfed down without a problem. I was given these as a tester and took them to my local dog pound and they said they had no problems and the puppies seemed to really enjoy them. Purina aren't the best in dog food but they are well constructed and you're not paying the earth. Apparently a good indicator is dog poop and apparently the food caused no issues there either :)

i breed occasionally, did some research and wet with my gut on this stuff. its full of natural oils avoiding vit E deficiency. my puppies left @8kg average at 8 weeks!!! thats mental, full of energy and even the vet commented he'd never seen such a well developed litter in many years! ill continue to feed this up until a year and will stick with the same brand PURINA. i gave this size of bag each to the new puppies owners and thyre ll doing very well

When I say I love it, actually it is the pooch who loves it. Now he is a little old for puppy food, but absolutely adores it. I do believe it is suitable for a boy his age as at nearly two, he is still "filling out". There is no hesitation, he gets right into his bowl and leaves a clean plate every time. There is picking and to-ing and fro-ing. The entire portion goes every time. I would certainly get it again.

Nicely packaged in a tough, re sealable bag. The graphics are also very bold and modern looking. This looks like the business from the packaging, and seems to be a new range from Purina who produce some great dog foods. This is a nice, crunchy but not too crunchy kibble which my dog loved. He seems to love the taste and wolfed it down. Contains a good mixture of ingredients and you get loads in the bag!

Purina pro plan do a wide range of dog foods specially designed to suit the needs of your dog. There are different formations for small, medium and large breeds and then the ranges span from light formulations to those designed specially for dogs with sensitive skins. All the formulations I have tried have been well received and the difference in the formulations can be clearly seen. Recommended.
