Purina PRO PLAN Dog Large Puppy Robust with OptiStart Rich in Chicken Dry Food - 3 kgThis is one of Purina’s new tailored diet products for dogs.Ingredients.The ingredients are listed on the back. I always look for the ash content as this is an indicator of the amount of non-nutritional filler used. In this product it is 7% which is quite low compared to cheaper foods.I wish manufacturers would be clearer about the ingredients as there are three separate listings in this food about the actual ingredients. It does contain wheat and soya protein which should be noted if you dog has an allergy problem with either ingredients.Bag.The food comes in a resalable strong bag for easy storage and decanting. There is a detailed feeding guide on the back.Taste test.Fed to my mothers Setter puppy. She liked it and not much was left over. This was pleasing as she is a very picky eater so far. There has been no change to her bowl movements with two regular outings a day. So for mothers Setter this has been a great success. We also tried this on our Poodle cross who liked it for a few days and then went off itOverall. The food is palatable has had no adverse effect on bowl movements so can be considered a success. The ingredients don’t justify the cost in my opinion. It is marketed as a premium product but the ingredients listed are common to most foods, it seems only the amounts of more quality ingredients vary between ranges. We have good results with the Setter but I suggest trying a small amount before buying it in a bulk lot first..

We tried this on a rescued dog we acquired recently. We loved it. It’s a dry crunchy biscuit-type food, which actually smells okay. That smell issue is a plus for me, because some dog foods smell so bad they make me wretch, and I apologise to the poor dog that has to try eating it. Anyway, the dog sniffed at it and was not deterred, so he tucked in with some enthusiasm. He liked it and, with wagging tail, came around in search of more. That’s one end of the dog taken care of. The other end of the dog, so to speak, fared well. No nasty surprises there, so we assume the middle bit of the dog likes it too.One of the two things the dog doesn’t bother with is the list of ingredients. In this case, the list is better than most for dry dog foods. I like to see rice in there, which suits the dog better than all that maize filler, though there is maize in this one.The other thing the dog doesn’t bother with is comparing the value of one dog food with another. In this case, I’m curious about the difference between this food and the others in the Purina puppy food range. The price is wildly different across the range, and it’s not obvious to me that there’s a great deal of difference between the various puppy foods to justify the price differences. This one is pretty expensive by comparison, which is the only thing I dislike about it.

This puppy food is designed specifically for the nutritional needs of young and still growing large breed dogs. It contains the daily nutritional requirements that a growing dog needs. Puppies of all breeds grow and develop rapidly. This is true for their bones, muscles, joints, internal organs and immune system. All have developmental needs that need to met by effective nutrition. This is a well balanced puppy food containing the nutrients and vitamins that large breed puppies specifically need and it includes nutrients that are not necessary once the puppy has finished growing - some of which could in fact be harmful to adult dogs if given in these proportions. For example,to build a strong body a balanced puppy food might typically contain about 30 percent protein, as well as the vitamins and minerals that are needed for a puppy to be healthy. A protein content like that would be far too much for an adult dog and would lead to weight gain and medical complications. My current litter of Newfoundland puppies love this stuff and I'm happy to recommend it to others. It is expensive but you shouldn't scrimp on the food you feed your dog in it's first year.

Izzy is our 6 month old GSD/Lab, and she is a BIG girl, with a BIG appetite!! She is very active, forever running around, playing, and training. She therefore needs satisfying, nourishing, filling food, that complements her lifestyle and her size. The Purina PRO PLAN Large Robust Puppy with OptiStart Rich in Chicken Dry Food ticks all the right boxes for her! It comes in a 3kg bag, and the kibble is a good size, and contains chicken, which Izzy loves. Her bowl empties very quickly, which is always a good sign, and she really enjoys the food. Purina is a very well-known brand that I trust to cater for my dog's needs, and this particular food contains colostrum, which is found in mother's milk,so that is an added bonus, I think. At this stage in her life, Izzy is growing and developing constantly, and this food contains key nutrients to help her joints to develop, aid her immune system, and also helps with dental care. For me, the deciding factor is how much she enjoys the food, and she really does!! Therefore, I am happy to recommend this food for large puppies, as we have found it to be something that our puppy loves, in fact, the bag is almost empty!!

This is a larger kibble suitable for puppies of around eight weeks up - it's not too large but the hardness of the kibble makes it a bit much for very small puppies to cope with, even those of bigger breeds.Nutritionally it ticks a reasonable number of boxes, it has chicken, rice (6%) and probiotics. These easy to digest ingredients go some way to balancing the fact that this product does contain wheat, which isn't ideal for small canine tummies, even robust ones.It also has dried colostrum - this can't be canine colostrum, and I am slightly uncomfortable with the ethics of obtaining bovine colustrum, which is meant for newborn calves. Dogs absolutely love the flavour of this range of kibbles,in my experience, so that is something worth considering - the fact that it is readily accepted makes it a good first food to introduce, makes puppies enthusiastic about solids and a little less likely to be a fussy eater.Do be aware of the price though - other puppy foods with similar or better nutritional value are much cheaper generally hence four stars.

This is the Purina Pro Plan Dry Dog Food Large Puppy Robust With Optistart Rich In Chicken Dog food (trying saying that fast five times!). It has been developed for "for large breed puppies with a robust physique" and formulated to help maintain their dental health, help support their immune systems and contains a range of nutrients for health joints. In terms of taste this goes down a treat, my dog can smell the chicken flavour instantly and his eyes light up. He's not a fussy dog when it comes to food but he does seem to look forward to this Purina more than other brands for whatever reason. The ingredients surprised me somewhat however. For a premium product with a price tag to match,it has a very low meat content (granted it also has a lower fat content) but it contains a lot of other ingredients. For the price it's hard to justify the product especially for continuous use, however if your dog likes it as much as mine did - then for varied diet treat them to this now and again...

Having tried the other formulas and them being a decent food but not quite the right fit for the Newfoundland/golden retriever cross puppy, I decided to give this one a go as it was more specific. Given that the puppy takes more after the Newfie side, I had hopes this food would be "it". I have to say I have not been disappointed. The kibble is larger and he not only loves the taste of the food, but is more content between meals. His poo has firmed up without additional potatoes, his breath doesn't stink, his coat is a lovely glossy black, his eyes bright, and he has the energy we'd expect for a puppy his age and breed. I would not hesitate to recommend this food for owners of similar pups. It's a little pricey, but sometimes you just have to pay little more, though I do plan on trying a few other makes of food to see if we can strike a balance between cost and quality without compromising the pup's digestion before committing to this as his one and only food.

Got a lively, 'robust' puppy in the family eating you out of house and home? This is a very good quality, well balanced dog food with a decent meat content and we've found it ideal for puppies who seem to think their only mission in life is to eat. Apart from filling them up used regularly we find this line of feed is great for a dog's on-going health and although perhaps a bit pricey when we use Pro Plan in particular, we find our dogs fill up quicker so you use less, which makes it more economical and you are guaranteed a good quality feed. We use a wide range of this 'Opti' line of products and you get good sized food chunks for whatever dog size your particular type of Pro Plan is targeted at- it's not too dry and smells pleasantly meaty- and for ease of use it comes in good, sturdy, resealable plastic bags. Never had any problems with Purina dog food and this line is an excellent one. If your dog takes to it, you're on a winner.

This is a good crunchy kibble that has been designed to help wean your young pup off puppy food and on to a more adult diet, it is a good size for little mouths and the crunchy texture helps keep teeth clean and healthy. It contains a good mix of ingredients that help growing dogs get the nutrition they need and colostrum, which is found in mothers milk, to help the transition process. This also helps with gut health and building a good immune system. It does have wheat as an ingredient and as this can be an allergen you do need to keep an eye out for upset tummies and the like to make sure that your dog doesn't have any issues- most don't and mine are in this category so I haven't seen anyproblems. This can be fed to your dog up until the age of 2 years and offers a really good start.

Got these for my dog, she likes the odd dry food but struggles with the some products, they can be a bit hard for her, these I’ve found she really likes.Ignoring all the claims, as most manufacturers make the same blah dee blah claims, only a vet or scientist would be able to test these theories and it would take more than my dog to prove them. Its weather or not you dog like them or not, that’s what counts.Mine is very happy with them, slightly bigger bits than she normally has but still a good size, they do seem a little softer than some I’ve found which for my dogs a big plus. The bag is a very good size, forgot how big a 3kg bag was. There obviously a quality product, one that I’m happy to recommend

Once you eliminate all the fancy marketing lingo and numerous graphic representations of various bits of the dog's anatomy and focus on the small print, there is not enough actual meat in this product to justify the price. It seems that on the surface of it, they invested more money and effort into designing the packaging than the actual dog food itself, but if the proof is in the pudding, my dog likes this food so I can't really complain. I like to give my dog various food every few days, so I got few different varieties targeted for different issues dog's might have - real ones as well as imaginary ones. It didn't affect my dog's digestions, she is as happy and cheerful as ever and the bowl is always clean.

I fed this to my young bouncy springer today and he loved it. He can be a bit fussy about food and in the past when weening him onto complete dry dog food has just sat and looked at. I think he genuinely enjoyed this one. It smells quite nice, some foods do smell a bit off putting and is a medium sized kibble which is really crunchy more so than some other dry foods which will be good for keeping plaque away. His poo was firm so it suited tummy, no runny side effects. It contains a good proportion of chicken, minerals, maize, rice, fish oils, and more, it is a healthy formula which will keep any puppy or young dog healthy and fit and with the extra crunchy kibble a nice set of clean teeth to.

First of you can use this dog food right up till your puppy is 2 years old. Its a really good size that helps to slow you dog wolfing it down. I add a touch of hot water to make a gravy and then cool it down with cold water. I also make sure that my dog has fresh water as well as I find that dry food can make you dog thirsty. I also weight out the amount of food my dog gets every day as I find that there guide of what to give you dog are just that. When feeding my dog I take into consideration how much exercise my dog has and just her food accordingly. I do think that the food is rather pricy and there is other dogs food on the market that are cheeper and just as good.

The Purina PRO PLAN Large Puppy range is aimed at owners of large breeds of dog like Labs, Setters and German Shepherds. The small sized mix is just right for puppies and young dogs who would find the larger courser mixes aimed at mature dogs, difficult to chew. With puppies and young dogs needing maximum input of vitamins, minerals and calories, this Purina PRO Plan mix is apparently developed with these elements in mind. The mix is also developed to maintain dental hygiene. As an aside, last night two of our cats toppled the sack over and started eating it! Obviously appetizing for cats too but definitely not recommended for moggies!

Pellets are not too soft nor too hard for a puppy. These are for your larger puppies like and in this case it was given to retrievers and labs (seems to be a lot in the pound :) ... such a shame). Wolfed down without a problem. I was given these as a tester and took them to my local dog pound and they said they had no problems and the puppies seemed to really enjoy them. Purina aren't the best in dog food but they are well constructed and you're not paying the earth. Apparently a good indicator is dog poop and apparently the food caused no issues there either :)
