I've trialled various Purina foods with different dogs and dog-owners and so far they've all been received by the dogs with great relish. There have been no turned-up noses - and no upset tummies or runny bottoms! So, a winner with all the dogs and converts won among the owners. This particular food is no exception - happy dog, happy owner.Complete foods are a convenient way of giving your dog all the nutrients it needs for a heathy balanced diet (and also dry foods mean drier stools that are easier to pick up in a doggy waste bag!). The pack contains a helpful feeding guide based on activity level as well as weight. The packaging is well-designed with a good-sized opening,a grab handle and a re-sealable top (to prevent the food going stale or smelling out the kitchen - though the food isn't smelly) which is easy to use.Purina is a premium brand that comes in at a premium price, though this larger pack is certainly better value - RRP £51.45, currently selling at £37.90 or £2.71 per kilo (a better price per kilo than the 3 kilo bags, which seem to be far more expensive than feeding your dog 100% chicken!). With a larger dog - and therefore a larger appetite, especially an athletic dog - that's certainly welcome. This is a chicken-based food, though chicken content is only 14%. The majority of the food consists of dehydrated poultry protein (which I don't have a problem with), wheat and maize, and there's also soys and gluten (both known potential allergens) in there as well as a mystery ingredient simply called "Digest", unnamed minerals and fish oil (which means there's no need to mix it in with the food separately). Total protein content is higher than other foods in the range at 27% as is fat content at 17%. In comparison, over half the RSPCA dog food is chicken meal and rice (£35 for 12 kilos). This complete dry pet food is part of the new Opti-nutrition range from Purina designed to meet the specific needs of different sizes, ages and conditions of dogs by the inclusion of targeted combinations of nutrients given names such as OptiAge, OptiDigest, OptiHealth and OptiDerma. It can be hard to know whether the claims made for various dog foods are valid or not without being a doggy nutritionist, but of course the starting point has to be whether your dog(s) will eat the food or not!I do worry a bit that the enthusiasm with which dogs wolf down these dry foods means they're a bit like MacDonalds - food that has a lot of science in it and is engineered to taste great so you want more and is healthy up to a point, but shouldn't be relied on as the main source of food, just as a treat. It isn't explained what some of the ingredients are or what others are for. There may be good reasons but I'm afraid I can't tell the difference between a helpful additive and a cheap filler that's bulking out the product, hence 4 stars despite the dog's enthusiasm.Loses a point because, although good value compared to smaller packs in the same range, I don't understand (because it's not explained) what the various ingredients are for, and some of them aren't specified in any detail.

I was recently extremely pleased with another Purina type of dog foot, namely the PURINA PRO PLAN Dog Large Adult Robust with OPTIHEALTH Rich in Chicken Dry Food. Both my large German Shepherd Dogs absolutely loved it and I intended to acquire a second bag.Unable to do so the option presented itself to try Purina PRO PLAN Dog Large Adult Athletic with OptiHealth Rich in Chicken Dry Food. The only visible difference that I personally noticed was the size of the chunks. The "Robust" chunks being squarer in shape and the "Athletic" chunks being of a trianguler shape. The consistency/colour/weight etc. appeared to me to all be the same. Not surprisingly,my German Shepherd Dogs also responded to the "Athletic" version in much the same way as they did to the "Robust" version. They both dived in and didn't stop till every morsel had been consumed, each licking his own bowl and then checking the bowl of the other.Having tried both Purina types of dog food over a period of weeks, both my dogs have remained in peak condition. That is a recommendation in itself.Obviously the dogs cannot read the labels on the packaging, and are unaware of the content. Having seen both the Purina "Robust" and this Purina "Athletic" for myself, the response of my dogs and the ultimate result, I have absolutely no hesitation whatsoever in giving five stars to the Purina "Athletic" as well. Both my German Shepherds were fussy eaters, with sensitive stomachs, till I tried Purina. Now it is a pleasure to feed them.Thank you.

I am reviewing the Purina PRO PLAN Dog Large Adult Athletic with OptiHealth Rich in Chicken Dry Food - 14 kg. Here are my thoughts:^^ My dogs are both adult and therefore do need extra care with their diets as they are more sensitive to some things these days than they used to be, but none the less athletic! It is important to remember to always allow your dogs diet to change gradually, so their little (or in my dogs' case - large) stomachs get used to the different food at a gentle pace. No drastic changes!^^ It seems quite costly, however, I like to vary my dogs diet supplying kibble like this as a mixer with fresh food (home cooked and specially prepared) and some cans of wet meat, too.So I am happy this saves a little money using the food up this way, without scrimping on quality or ruining my dogs' health.^^ Developed by Purina vets and nutritionists, so a trusted brand I have heard of.^^ Supports long term health with carefully selected ingredients and vitamins, so if anything does this I am happy to help them by providing the tools for the trade.Overall:My dogs love this, and it's just as well, since this is a massive bag. I am happy to provide this to my dogs knowing that the brand is a trusted and reliable company and of course, it's a bonus when my dogs love it, since it is then money not wasted but indeed well spent.

This is marketed as a kibble suitable for large athletic dogs, which encompasses breeds such as Weimaraners, Lurchers, Afghan Hounds, Greyhounds, GSDs. We have a large sized Springer who is quite keen on her food to say the least, I did hope that this larger kibble would help her to eat more slowly. The pieces appear crunchier and to take longer to eat than the standard working dog kibble that is her normal diet, which is definitely a good thing. When she takes longer over her food she is far less likely to ask for snacks later on, or to go on bin raids. She is neutered and keeping her weight under control is a concern. This isn't particularly high in protein compared with some premium dog foods, the protein source is chiefly chicken. However it certainly goes down well, she enjoyed her food and definitely knew that this was something new and exciting in her bowl.At 14kg, this is a generously sized bag that should last us for around five weeks.Owners of a single large dog should find it lasts roughly as long. Our Springer isn't being overfed, we have another Springer as well, who is smaller than the female. At the moment he is trialling a different brand of dog food. He should be able to cope with the larger kibble pieces as he is one of those dogs who eats everything without fear or favour.

Over the past few months we have tried a number of the Purina branded dry dog foods and so far our dog has eaten what we have put in his bowl for him. I have to say that he must find them tasty because he always clears his plate. We have also had no problem mixing and matching with his food and have had no unfortunate after effects. In the past we have had a dog that was extremely fussy and insisted on eating only fresh cooked chicken so it is a relief that our recent new member of the family likes dry food. This particular food, 'Purina Pro Plan for Large Athletic dogs, appears to be tailor made for him, a 30-35kg Greyhound/Lurcher.Definitely large and definitely athletic. We feed him around 450-500g a day on dry food so this 14kg sack will provide 28-30 days worth of food. At the offer price it is selling for at this moment in time it equates to around £1.30 a day which is good value.Purina dog food is generally high quality, the dog continues to eat it and does not get bored eating it, though on occasion we do treat him to a little extra cooked meat mixed in. Though even when we do not add anything extra he still wolfs it down.

This Purina Pro Plan Large Athletic Dog Food was tried by a Rhodesian Ridgeback for several days and he really seems to like it which isn't the case with all varieties of dry food - in some ways he can be almost as fussy as a cat about his food. With this food his plate is clean and it might be my imagination but he seems to drink a bit more water but that's no bad thing. So from a taste, smell, texture point of view this food obviously tivcks all the canine boxes. The formulation of the food is designed to address the needs of larger working type dogs and the key protein source is chicken but there are plenty of added vitamins and minerals etc.The size of the kibble is quite large but I think that's good thing in that it encourages even larger dogs to really crunch the food which should do their teeth a lot of good. This sack of food is seriously large and is well suited to kennels or other bulk users, however, I think for a domestic consumer this size pack might be a bit too big in terms of keeping it fresh but smaller packs are available. Overall, a thumbs up - it's obviously a hit.

My brother has struggled for years to find a food aimed towards helping dogs GAIN weight. Everything is aimed at obese dogs who have limited exercise. He has 2 Malamute Huskies who are well exercised every day as well as being a working dogs. As malamute owners will know, they are born to run, and run and run. they expend a lot of calories and this brother and sister were very thin, to the point were people commenting on their lack of weight. It was very noticeable that they were underweight. We were never willing to cut down their exercise and their his life dull. They had extra portions of 'normal' foods but the extra quantity gave them loose bowels; tinned meat, raw meat diets, but nothing worked.Until we found this food. I cannot praise it enough. They have gone up in weight from 30kg to 36kg and they look wonderful they don't need to have massive portions to achieve it either. The stools are firm/smooth, healthy and less frequent. A highly recommended feed - check out their other foods across all breeds and requirements.

My dogs are very fussy when it comes to dried food, they're not generally very keen so I usually feed them a form of dampened dog muesli with meat but it's not readily available in local shops so I'm always on the look out for something more accessible that they like. I was offered a bag of this Purina food for trial so thought we'd give it a go. The result was very positive, amazingly both dogs wolfed it down, which they never do with dried food, I've tried many and some they like better than others, but never before have they gobbled it like they did with this one. So it obviously tastes good, and I like the fact that it helps too with dental care. For me, the only bad point is the pricepoint. At nearly £38 a bag it's over 3 times the price of the muesli I usually buy them and for me it's just way too much. If you have a bottomless pit and can afford to pay £38 a bag then I wouldn't hesitate to recommend, for the average man in the street I think it's far too expensive.

My dog really liked this. Previous to this, she has always been on dried foods, but for a number of years now I always have to mix just a little wet dog food in (just enough to coat the nuggets) so that she'd eat it. I don't believe she's fussy...whilst I haven't tried them myself, from the smell alone I feel quite safe in assuming that most dried foods are not delicious. Palatable maybe, but not delicious and flavoursome.Going on the fact that my dog will eat the Purina Pro Plan without wet food I feel safe to assume it must very nice. In addition her coat looks very healthy and I think she's shedding less. Naturally as we head towards towards Winter this would be true anyway but there seems to be significantly less shed than usual for the time of year.Of course, this may have nothing to do with what she's eating but it is the only thing we've changed in recent times.

My cousins mixed breed large dog took to this right away. Not quite sure what mix he is, but he looks like a Great Dane crossed with a small pony, huge and full of energy.Although I would not classify him as a "athletic" dog he certainly fits the "large" category.Hard to tell really whether he finds this dry mix better than other food as he's not a fussy eater for the most part. That said he wolfs this down pretty readily and it hasn't slowed him down. I wouldn't say yet that he has noticeably sprung into even more action, or that this dog food is like a tonic, but he certainly likes it.Time will tell on the shiny coat, and other manufacturer boasts, but thus far it has not upset his digestion.I found it a little expensive for even this size bag, but I would give it plus points for lasting well, and it seems to fill him up.

Absolutely wonderful. My big labrador-type mongrel dog has developed a little bit of arthritis and tthis was one of the foods my vet recommended to me for him to give extra bone strength. He's now as bouncy as ever after a short time with a little limp. The nutrients and additives certainly have done him good and that's a BIG advantage of this dog food, even if my dog didn'tlike it so much. However, he DOES like it, as indeed my other dogs do.A little experiment showed that they went to the bowl of Purina PRO-PLAN first when it was put down along with a dish of their usual food. I don't doubt that tomorrow it might be the other way around, but it certainly is a popular food.Highly recommended for arthritic dogs and I would give it to mine unquestioningly. An excellent buy.

Very good quality dry dog food with a decent meat content. Bit pricey but when we use Pro Plan in particular, we find our dogs fill up quicker so you use less, which makes it more economical and you are guaranteed a good quality feed. Ideal for a large, active dog as a no nonsense everyday feed and used regularly we find it really does serve the dog well. We use a wide range of this 'Opti' line of products and you get good sized food chunks for whatever dog size your particular type of Pro-Plan is targeted at, it's not too dry and smells pleasantly meaty, and for ease of use it comes in good, sturdy, resealable plastic bags. Never had any problems with Purina dog food and this line is an excellent one.If your dog takes to it, you're on a winner.

Golden Labrador in question would eat the bin, let alone its contents, if he could get away with it. But in the meantime, this Purina is going down a dream. He's perhaps not quite old enough for this level of food - just over a year old -- and he did initially have tummy trouble. It only lasted a couple of days, so we reduced the amount he had mixed in with his wet food, and the problems seemed to go away. The bits are large, too, so he does at least pause to crunch his food on its otherwise fast transit to his tail.I'd say this size sack would last 3 weeks - which at Amazon prices is good value, but otherwise might work out expensive. Still, the dog loves it, there's no waste, and his coat is looking extra fine right now.Recommended.

I absolutely love this dog food and so does my Lab. She is 25KG and so is at the entry weight as this dog food is designed for dogs between 25KG to 90KG. The size of the kibble is excellent. I had no problems introducing this food to my dog. Saying that she is a lab. I like that they give details of how much to feed with regards to how much exercise your dog may have. Im lucky that we are out and do around 4 to 5 miles a day so I take into consideration of this. I am also aware of any other treats she gets ie. dental sticks, dog biscuits so I do take a slight amount of her food out to compensate this.I like to add a dash of hot water to make a gravy then cool with cold water a minute of so later so not to soften the kibble too much.

Recently I tested few of Purina's Pro Plan dog foods targeted for various different health issues - improved skin, digestion, joints... on paper this one seems to be the most general formulated for dental care which is probably what my dog needs the most. Chunks are large and quite hard which is always good, and added vitamins and minerals can only be a good thing. Every time I tried different food my dog took some time to get used to it and after a few days of getting used to it, now she eats it quite happily. 14kg of dry dog food for this price is also a good value and I have to say I was not a little bit surprised when I saw how big the bag is - my only word of advice before buying is tothink of where will you store it first.
