I have used a potato attachment on two of my last hand blenders which in effect does what a hand ricer does it makes lovely smooth mash (a hand blender without the attachment does not work, it makes the potato gloopy and quiet liquidy as the gluten is relaxed), the only down side to both of my hand blenders was they lasts two seconds and broke down so on my latest blender I went for something that would blend and not give up on me - sick of paying a fortune it has the basics so no potato attachment.Being so used to the lovely smooth mash on the odd times we had it I was not happy with a standard hand masher so considered a potato ricer which are quite a price depending on how often you useit. Finally I bit the bullet and bought an OXO Good Grips Ricer and was not disappointed.I cut my potatoes in to chunks (neither too big or too small) drained them into a colander, put the pan back on a low heat (#1) placed a little milk and butter in the pan and then from the colander placed potato into the ricer 2/3 filling it and then pressed down.It does need a good grip and a firm press to start with and then the potato drops through a treat (yes a little amount of the mashed potato comes up the sides), using a wooden spoon I wiped the potato from the exterior bottom (just so I did not drop potato as I went to refill), drawing back up the metal plate I scooped any potato from the sides into the pan and repeated the process until all the potato was riced and the ricer was clean of any potato. All this took a few minutes if that and then I quickly creamed the mash into the butter and milk all still piping hot as this had been done over a low heat and we had a delicious creamy mash.I would recommend this to anyone, in fact might buy another ricer for my daughter.

I bought this as I'd been told 'ricers were better than mashers', this one reviewed well, and I like previous Oxo products I'd bought - so I decided to give 'ricing' a try.I definitely prefer mash made with this - but unlike a fair number of other reviewers, it's not because it "makes the smoothest mash". Put a bit of elbow grease in with a good masher and you can make smooth mash, the problem with mashing is that as you work out the lumps, it turns the spuds into a dense paste.I think the benefit of the ricer is that it just works each potato enough to be 'mashed', but no more. Put half a pan of hot spuds through it, it and you'll end up with a full pan of 'rice'and lose a load of water in the billows of steam that come off the massively increased surface area. You can then stir in some butter/milk/bay/whatever and the result still has a lovely fluffy texture (which still wicks up any sauce you put over it later)Downside of this ricer is that it doesn't have a huge capacity so takes longer to 'mash' and the more you're making, the longer it will take (and you have to faff around with tongs or have asbestos-fingers) to get the potatoes in whilst they're still hot.In summary - more effort, more time, but worth it.

Well I did buy this as a joke present for my Husband but it's worked out brilliantly. My Husband is in charge of mashing the spuds if we ever have a meal with mashed potatoes as he can do it twice as quickly as me and frankly I can't be bothered with it. The poor man does tend to get carried away however which results in potatoes with a gluey, wallpaper paste consistency which is not my idea of how nice mashed potatoes should be.After opening on Christmas day and having a good chuckle he was promptly set to work with it to do the mash for Christmas Day Lunch. Well I can honestly say we're both very impressed. He says it's very easy to use and requires very little pressure to get the potatoes to pass through. The riced potatoes that fell into the bowl underneath were gloriously lump free and fluffy and only needed a brief stir through with a bit of butter and seasoning to come out absolutely perfect. The lack of going over and over them to get rid of lumps has eliminated the gluey texture completely. We've used this a fair few times now and the build quality seems to be good, the rubber on the handles has not flaked or perished in any way and I would recommend this wholeheartedly.

The potato ricer makes very quick work of mashing potatoes. First, I don't peel the potatoes, just scrub and cut out any damaged bits. Steam or boil in chunks until soft, put two or three chunks at a time, through the ricer. The skin separates cleanly and can be lifted away. The squeezed potato is very light and fluffy, so I haven't added milk or margarine, saving on calories. I used riced potato in some favourite cake recipes, very good, no lumps. Sometimes soft potato squeezes over the top of the ricer. That is easy to scoop up. Washing up is quick , just clean off the ricer first with a small spatula, remove any potato skins, then wash in hot soapy water with a soft brush. Air dry .I hope to use the ricer to puree tomatoes and other summer vegetables.

This is an excellent ricer. I had a hard timer finding a good ricer at Canadian Tire, Kitchen Stuff Plus, and other retailers. While this was $39.99, it has performed as good as other OXO products I own. This is a well-designed and ergonomic utensil. The press is angled perfectly and doesn't slip out or get stuck as others I tried did. The grip is comfortable, cleans easily and quickly by running it under hot water and soap, and the best thing is that it's stainless steel so no rusting! Other ricers were chrome coated, and as someone who used chrome coated utensils (no longer do) the fancy nomenclature sooner or later rusts.I wish this product came with a set of a thinner and thicker blades.Overall,I highly recommend it.

Bought this product after hearing about the benefits of ricing versus mashing. Below is a summary of how it compares to my old masher.Advantages- Faster and more consistant. No more having to mash and remash to ensure a smooth result, once a potato has gone through, it is smooth. Also you can rice a couple of potatoes at a time.- Easier to clean. The mashing part of the masher was raised and would get clogged up with bits of potato and was a pain to clean. This one is easily cleaned in comparison.Disadvantages- When ricing, you will have to transfer the potatoes to the ricer.ConclusionAll in all I have not used the masher since receiving this product. Says it all really.

This a great kitchen tool, with tools I believe if you buy quality first time around it will save you money long term, this is one of these items. Its a substantial piece and very well made. My wife has used this much more than me and she loves it so much so that I tried it myself but in hindsight it was a clever tactic by my wife to get the potatoes peeled, but I must say it was effortless to create some smooth lumpless mash. The only down side I would say it takes ages to do if you have a load of potatoes to do as the compartment isnt massive but I suppose the effort and the little bit of mess it creates is worth it for the end product.

This is just the most amazing thing I have ever bought ever! Mashed potato has always been one of my favourite foods ever! But since buying a potato ricer I now cannot stop eating mashed potato! Mashed potato is the best....I havnt looked at any other vegtables since. Potatos are the way forward for me from now on.If you are in a relationship when you by this, then be warned you could end up single shorlty after - unless they like mashed potato too.PS. I am to afraid to add cheese to my mash, as it could be the end of me! Can anyone recommend a good grater?

I have wanted a potato ricer for ages and spent a bit of time trying to find the best one. I have to say this one is superb!!! It is so easy to use, in fact my 10 year old daughter has used it with ease also!! Very easy to clean- dishwasher made it come out perfectly like new again! Would thoroughly recommend to anyone. My Hubbie said is has been the best mash he has ever had- I bet my family and said I would give them £10 if they could find a lump in their mash- despite their best efforts it has been 100%lump free :-)

Everything I've had from the Good Grips range has felt like it was good quality and would last a long time; this is no exception. I was wondering if it would be difficult to clean too but it's not too bad if you clean it as soon as you've finished using it. I suppose the only down side is that it's a pain to use if you've got a lot of potato to "rice". For smaller portions, it's not too bad though. One for the lovers of kitchen gadgets but perhaps not something you'll find yourself using a lot.

I had previously owned a potato ricer that I bought from a well known retailer for £5 more than this product cost but ended up throwing it away as it was really difficult to use- it was hard on the wrists and the interchangeable plates kept coming out when ricing potatoes. It also rusted up after washing. I was therefore hesitant to buy another ricer but so glad I did. This ricer makes quick work of a huge mound of potatoes and has made making mashed potatoes a pleasure.

Having bought a cheapo ricer to see whether I could get any use out of one, we found that we had mangled it completely out of shape after a couple of goes. This was enough however to prove how useful these things are so we looked for something a bit better. This one does the job. Great results. This one is less messy than the cheapo one in that it has holes only in the base. The other one had them on the side too and made a lot more mess with mash spilling out the sides.

The OXO Good Grips Potato Ricer makes lovely, smooth mashed potato every time. It is easy to use and much quicker than using a traditional masher. The ricer was bigger than I expected and handles several potato halves at a time easily. I have arthritis in my hands but the soft grip handles make using the ricer easier. The design means it can rest on top of the pan or bowl when in use which also helps. All in all an excellent item which is well worth the money.

Have found this to be much better than using a normal potato masher. You put your potato in to the main chamber, squeeze the handles together and you get really smooth mash potato come out through the holes. no lumps at all! The rubber knob on the opposite side to the handle means this can also be rested on the pot to make the process even easier.Should wash it as soon as possible though as it can be a bit of a pain to wash if the potato has hardened in it.

Strong, robust piece of kitchen equipment which provides the perfect mashed potatoes. My reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is the size of it. It is SMALL so if you have larger servings for example more than 2 this is definitely not the size for you. I say that because you will be there all day and by the time you are finished ricing / mashing your potatoes will be cold. Like I mentioned earlier great piece of equipment but make sure you get the right size.
