I've had one of these Oxo Good Grips jar openers for years, and have just ordered another for a relative.I'd say there is a bit of a knack to making this gadget work every time, but for me it's never failed. With the jar stable on a flat surface, the trick is to wedge the jar's lid firmly into the V-shaped grip so that the teeth on one side of the V get a good grip on the lid, then just twist. For stubborn lids I find that extending the index and middle fingers over the V-shape (i.e. over the lid) and applying a bit of downward pressure prevent the gadget from slipping off while twisting.As per my title,I've successfully used this to remove the smaller plastic tops off fizzy drinks bottles too.The only thing to be aware of is that the teeth do tend to leave small indentations in the lid, though that probably won't bother anyone greatly.Verdict: Opens jars and bottles every time. Recommended.

If at first you don't succeed is true with this item. I was lucky and got the knack of using it quickly but have had to show a couple of friends how as they were struggling. I could not manage to open jar/screw top bottles etc nowadays without it. It is difficult to put into writing but I will try. Grip the handle as firmly as possibly with thumb amd outside 3 fingers with your index finger on top, pushing into the jar and downwards at the same time as twisting anti-clockwise. I have found this method releases even the toughest heat sealed jam jars. If I can't get a good grip on the jar with my other hand I grip it with an off cut of the non slip matting that comes in a roll.

This gives considerable extra leverage but the trick is to make sure it is properly engaged before turning as otherwise you can end up by scoring the metal cap which results in sharp bits. It is not difficult to make sure it is engaged but it does require some care. Very occasionally, with extremely difficult jars (usually wide ones) I find that the problem is with the hand which is keeping the glass body of the jar still ! In those cases, I have then wrapped a little cling film round the jar to give me a better grip.

I had one of these for about 10 years, regularly using it to get jar lids off. Ultimately, when it broke in two trying to get a particularly difficult jar open (the same jar subsequently went on to also break a different jar opener), I didn’t feel cheated: it had served me extremely well.That’s why I went back and bought the same thing again. If it serves me for 10 years and opens dozens of jars, I will be well satisfied.

had one of these for years and it is the best jar opener I have tried so bought this one for my Mum who has a selection of jar openers in her kitchen drawer, none of them work for her though. Yes, you need to push hard against the jar lid to ensure it is tightly located within the V shaped bit, but once this is done, the turn with the handle is fairly easy.

As one gets older and opening some jars and containers becomes more difficult, this jar opener is a very useful addition to the kitchen. I have been really impressed and have purchased such jar openers as gifts for friends. It is much easier to use than more complicated mechanical openers. My friends eulogise about such jar openers too.

Ages ago I purchased a huge jar of gherkins and despite elastic bands, wrenches, screwdrivers, tea-towels and anything else I could think of (including a couple of strong fellas trying to be helpful) nothing managed to open the jar.Anyway the jar is now half empty and no more strained wrists and friction burns!!Fan-blooming-tastic!

Perfect for someone like me who has a poor grip or someone like my mother who is arthritic. Slide the thick end over any jar or bottle then just lever it to one side and off comes the top. Easy to clean and mine has lasted three years thus far and I have just bought the identical item for my arthritic mother..... and she loves it!

Works best when I stand the jar on the otherwise completely useless soft plastic 'grip' mat I purchased before this. Not quite perfect - you still have to work a bit to stop it slipping, but it did sort out the lid of the salt reservoir on my dishwasher so that is a major plus

I could not manage without this OXO jar opener, it works like magic. My hands are not very strong and this enables me to open all kinds of jars,plastic milk bottles etc. When my very old one broke I looked on the internet and found this new model - what a life saver!

Light but solid enough to complete most asked of it. Some jar lids are thicker/deeper that others , so it can take a bit of fiddling to get a grip and loosen lid. Could be difficult for a person with a weak wrist to hold jar whilst using the bottle top grip.

OXO Good Grips Jar Opener.No kitchen should be without one. Especially good for a person with weak hands. I am surprised that it is impossible to obtain one on the High Street. My old one lasted me over 10 years and was in constant use.{Gwenda Evans}

Excellent for right handed people but I never thought when buying.........im left handed and so is my hubbie. Its harder but not as hard as trying to open obstinate cans without this . Super build and make. Rubber handle and quality plastic.

I bought one of these as a last resort to open a bottle I was given as a gift, that was solidly stuck shut (I had tried 2 other jar openers and many strong volunteers, all without success!). This device opened it effortlessly!

Good product, well designed and well made, like all OXO products.However, still need something to grip the jar while I work on the lid with this tool!So now looking for a rubber gripper for the jar or bottle......
