If ever I have a problem with a kitchen gadget, I know I should have looked to see if an OXO Good Grips version existing, before buying the otherI have had a cutting wheel (as opposed to a stab blade) opener which was good enough for my not-very-often can opening needs, for some years. A lot of the cans these days are ring pull mechanism, which means the opener gets used less and less often. Except........some of those ring pulls just don't work, and the effort needed to pull them open snaps the pull straight off, rather than succeeding in peeling back the lidOne particular flavour of a cat food brand, unlike other flavours of that brand, proved absolutely 100% ring pull fails. And my perfectly (I thought)acceptable can opener could not cope with this small, shallow indentation tin eitherEnter my newly bought OXO. What can I say?! À votre santé, designers. It really isn't just about that turning handle, which will of course be a boon for those with weaker grips and arthritis. It's the efficiency of that cutting wheel, and the easy squeeze needed to pierce the lid. OXO got into that shallow tin like gliding through butter. I could compare the two, side by side, and with the most problematic tin the difference was absolutely marked. OXO did an easy glide around the can, efficiently cutting, with no snags. The other opener (comparable in price to OXO) needed more effort to initially pierce, and stuttered with a clean all the way round cut, with areas where it had failed to cut, leaving a dangerous tin, which had to be prised open where it could be.

Purchased this item as a replacement second can opener that unfortunately did not live up to its Magical name and failed after only having for a relatively short time. It is a long time since I purchased what may be seen as one of the older style openers. However, having a number of OXO products already, I decided to give this one a go because of all the excellent customer reviews. This is a great product. It has chunky handles which are good to grip, for everyone not just for those with dexterity problems. The opener is large, good to grip and turns smoothly. When you put the opener on the can you press the handles together until they click round the top of the can and from there the opener is secure and will not fall off the can unless you pull open the handles. The opening blade cuts through tin like it is butter and is very quick. Unlike the Magically named one that takes the whole top off the can which may not be for everyone, this opener takes the top of the can off from the inside. Once you have opened the can and taken off the opener I have found it leaves just a tiny bit of lid still attached so it doesn't drop down on the contents. I lift up the lid with the handle of a spoon and empty the contents. You can then leave the lid up to rinse it under the tap before pushing the lid back down again into the can ready for recycling. Can't fail to be impressed with this product. If I need any kitchen type items I always look at what OXO has available. This certainly hasn't disappointed and looks like it will last a long time.

Before purchasing this OXO Good Grips Soft Handled Can Opener, I wasn't sure about buying it. Part of my thought was whether it will be suitable for left and right handed people, because we have both left and right handed in my house. But I eventually went for it. So, my verdict is that, it is for both left and right handed users. See the pictures I attached with this review - the pictures shows two different method, which can be for whether right or left hand. The two pictures with the can opener hanging to the side, can be turned towards you or away from you to open and this can be found easy for right hand use. The two pictures with the can opener been placed on top of the can,can be turned clockwise or anti-clockwise and this can be found easy for left hand use. The picture showing two cans next to each other, is after opening the cans in the two different method of positioning, but what you will notice is that the lids looks different. The lid for when can opener is positioned on the can, looks more clean of any sharpness and can even be placed back on the can comfortably to cover it. But the lid for when can opener is hanging to the side, is sharp and cannot be used to cover the can.I hope you find this review useful. God bless

If can openers were cars...Don't waste your money on anything else, just buy the Rolls Royce Phantom and have done with it.Effortlessly gilde in to tin opening heaven. A smug smile of quiet satisfaction will caress your lips as the silky-smooth blade of the OXO Good grips slices through the tin. The silent action and comfortable grip left me in awe of this world class opener. One tin was just not enough, i had to open another, then another; rice pudding, peas, soups of all kinds, i could not stop. Before i knew where i was there was 23 opens tins on the side, my wife went bloody mad..To double the opening bliss, i have started opening BOTH ends of the tin!Ring-pull cans have now been banned and my mental health is being assessed.I think i went a bit far when i hung the opener on a chain around my neck and went knocking on old folks doors, offering my free 'tin opening service'.One ungrateful old git called the police; huh, just because i opened a few more tins than he wanted. There was a minor scuffle and i had to leave. I have had the last laugh though, as last night i went back round there and using my trusty OXO Good grips,i removed the roof from his Nissan Micra.Ha.

For years, I repeated bought crappy can openers that would break after very short periods of time. I've probably gone through at least 15 can openers in my adult life. I knew that this wasn't a flaw in the design of can openers, generally, just in my seeming aversion to buying good ones that would last more than a couple of weeks. My thought process usually goes something like this:"Oh no, the can opener is starting to break again."***one week later***"Oh crap, the can opener has broken again."***one week later****Oh no, the can opener is broken. WHY IS THIS HAPPENING TO ME??? How am I going to open this tin of tomatoes now?I must run up to the high street to buy a new one..."I subsequently purchase a cheap can opener from the one shop on the high street that sells them, and it's a jobby that you could get from the 99p store but that I've been suckered into paying £4.99 for.Well, the last time my cheap can opener broke, I vowed to break the cycle and bought this one from Amazon. And it's brilliant. I wouldn't be surprised if it lasted me at least a year. Maybe even five. The prospect fills me with joy.

I already have an electric can opener which hubby refuses to use and an ancient butterfly type which he finds difficult to use (even I will admit it's very worn and hard to use)About once a year or so he tries to open a can, I try not to listen as he has a good moan and tells me to get a decent can opener, it's only once in a blue moon he has to open one.Anyway I got this one to pacify him. I gave him a Fray Bentos Pie to try it on, I ran out of the kitchen while he tried, didn't want to hear his remarks. I came back and peeped round the door, there was a perfectly opened tin, no sharp edges all neat. "It was easy" he declared.I tried it myself the next day, I can't open a tin with it,I ended up with big gauges on the top. Tried it the other way, big gauges on the side. I'm never going to be able to use it I just haven't got the knack but I will say this. It's the genuine article and very well made with a nice grip.I don't care if I can never use it. It made hubby happy and that's worth five stars easily, if you can use it properly like hubby then you will get a super neat result.

There is nothing to say about this product except wow. I have been using oxo peeler's for a few years now and when our can opener finally died we thought long and hard whether to spend nearly £10 on a can opener when you can get them for less than a £1. But i came to my senses and bought it. From the first use it has been a dream, it takes the top off a can first time every time no muss no fuss. You don't have to go around the can loads of times, and no jagged edges, and no effort at all to use. Its worth the extra cash to not have the mess or stress.July 2012I thought that i would let people know that this can opener is still going strong, it is used nearly every day (we have a fussy toddler who loves beans)and it is still as good as the first time we used it, I would still recommend it is well worth the moneyApril 2015Sadly the handle broke at lunch time today, it is still usable but it is no longer comfortable to use. I have however just bought another one as I think it was more than worth the money

I never thought I’d be excited to write a can opener review! The OXO good grips are ace, but my view may be slight off.For as long as I can remember we’ve used the same can opener from a different brand. It wasn’t comfortable in the hand, often slipped whilst turning the handle and was just awkward. Then one night after one poorly opened can too many I make a spontaneous purchase of the OXO good grips and wow, they are comfortable to grip and strangely, they can open a can.... easily. What is this magic??The following day I hear a shout from the kitchen and oldest son is jumping on the spot with excitement! “What’s happened son??” I asked, “it opened!” He replied. Now,I understand that if I spent four years eating plain rice, then a £3 steak from Lidl would taste like the best steak in the world. There are better steaks out there and I’m only enjoying it because the years of plain rice but darn, I’m going to keep enjoying this for a long time. It’s a great can opener.

After hunting high and low for a decent replacement can opener, I read the other reviews here and decided to give this a go; after all it couldn't be any worse than our (not so old) can opener that was supposed to be the best can opener ever? This arrived and straight away I could tell that it was a quality item. It is sturdy and built to withstand the most awkward of can designs; working as a traditional can opener cutting out tops, or as a new style opener cutting off the tops. I am more than pleased with it and whilst it was a little pricier than other alternatives, I feel that it has been well worth it. The real test will come when I come to cut the top and bottom off a square corned beef tin (the only way to get the meat out successfully).Once it has past this challenge (and I'm sure it will) I will know that it deserves its pride of place in the kitchen draw. I may even update you and let you know!

I've had my fair share of tin openers and generally they've always been lacking. I mean at the end of the day a tin opener is just meant to open tins and will hopefully last long enough before you give up and go out and buy another one. This tin opener sits in its own league. I was surprised at just how well this grabs a tin and how it seems to "flow" while opening said tin. I can not overstate enough at just how effective this tin opener is at opening tins! It essentially puts all other tin openers to shame and is absolutely worth the price. The key thing for me is how much easier it is for someone who is unable to grip well, can actually use this with a degree of success.I intend to update this review on the day it (unfortunately) ceases to work just to see how long it's lasted and in what way it deteriorated. In short: incredible, well worth the price, and now I just want to open all the tins

Not only does it effortlessly open all manner of tins, it keeps on doing it. I bought this tin opener in December 2012 after having had so many others that work OK for a week or so and then get steadily worse until after about month they don't work at all and get thrown away. I was drawn to this opener as a lot of the reviews mentioned that it lasted well. When it arrived, though it worked well and felt comfortably, it really didn't seem that much different from any other tin opener. It does however have one major difference and that's why I've come back to my order nearly 2 years later to add these comments. THE THING STILL WORKS! It's opened hundreds of tins, been through far more dishwasher cycles then it ever really needed and IT STILL WORKS.Congratulations to whoever makes it. I wouldn't have thought it was rocket science but whatever it is, they've succeeded where so many others have failed.

My parents have owned a can opener for years now. It really needs replacing. They always refused to get a new one because they don't have the right mechanism, or aren't comfortable to hold, or are cheap-feeling.I got this and the old one was thrown away instantly. It's extremely comfortable (as the name implies), very easy to use, and has the perfect mechanism for us. As many other reviews have pointed out, it cuts into the top of the can (not the side) and removes the inner lid, not the whole top of the can.Operation is smooth, cleaning is fast and easy, and the material the black parts are made from is very easy to hold and clean. The metal is high-quality and the blade is very sharp. We've only been using it for a few weeks now,but it feels high quality, and many other reviews say that it lasts a long time, so it's a great purchase to make. I'd recommend it wholly.

I bought this tin opener in good faith that my deceitful tins would be opened in no time at all: thinking it would show the crafty little mares who is boss.Well, guess what? It works!Once upon a little time I was trying to open a tinned pineapple slice: don't judge- were not all rich. My wife Jolene, who really likes pineapple, was distraught at the lack of pineapple delivered to her by my old tin opener. Jolene went to back to bed with an empty stomach and broken head.I consulted amazon for a suitable replacement; and boy it did not let me down.I can now open a smolgerspore of tinned confectionary with ease and ergonomic pleasure.Oxo tin openers are the way forward, all other tin openers should be quivering in fear.Myself and Jolene are still happily married; intact we are banging tonight in spite of pineapple.Once again, thank you oxo.Yours in good faith:Pablo.

We have about three can openers and this one's by far the best (the others are pretty good). Some people might find it takes one or two tried to engage it onto the lip of a can, but I have no problems with it. The grip is sure, the handle turns well and doesn't seem to be getting more cranky as time passes - despite a lot of use at times - and it whizzes around a can almost without effort. It's not a magnetic one that catches the opened lid for you but, as you complete the circuit, the lid twists upward on the last bit of metal and, if you're careful, you can then twist that top off entirely. I generally just motor all the way around and don't really miss that magnetic feature. You'd think can openers are "much of a muchness",but there are only a few where there is almost no effort or minor jiggery-pokery to be done to open a simple can. Full marks to the Oxo crew.

My boyfriend and I moved in together almost 2 years ago, but ever since that joyous occasion there has been regular conflict regarding one thing... his tin opener. I unfortunately inherited it, and it has been the source of many an argument these past 2 years. Apparently it was my ineptitude as a tin 'opener' rather than the actual product, that was the issue. Well you can imagine my delight when he finally agreed to having a new tin opener in our lives after his started to rust. And you can imagine my joy/elation/delight when he witnessed me opening my first tin with this ever so brilliant can opener with ease. No loose metal shards, no having to attack the tin with a knife to fish out the contents.Although he would never admit it,I was right! His tin opener was pants!I would therefore wholeheartedly recommend this product. It has served me well so far!
