It isn't very often that you need a tin opener these days, with the prevalence of ring-pull tins that there is now. But when you do, this one is great. There is a fad now for tin openers that cut around the side and take the whole top rim off. Some say this is better because "there are no sharp edges". Really? We had one of these. It never worked very well, the wheel didn't grip the tin very well so it slipped, and when tins are very full, it is inevitable that you end up spilling some of the contents. And the resulting topless tin seemed pretty sharp to me.So I was very pleased to see this opener is from the traditional old school of just cutting around the inside of the top, not the sides. It does it very easily and smoothly too. Yes, the edges are sharp, what do you expect? But you can stop just before you completely cut the lid off, bend it open, pour the contents out, and then bend the top inside. No separate sharp lid in the recycling bin, no nasty exposed sharp top on the tin.Solidly made, big chunky handles which don't fill with water when you wash it, and it works. That'll do for me.UPDATE: I think I understand now why a few people think this is so bad. When I bought it, I ordered direct from Amazon, and it arrived in proper retail packaging. My wife has just bought another of these (we needed another one, nothing wrong with the first one!) and she bought from a seller - Bargain Hut in this case. The opener arrived with no retail packaging whatsoever, wrapped in a bit of grubby bubble wrap, and is clearly not a genuine Kitchen Craft product. The handles and winder are different shapes to the picture, and the construction is clearly a cheap clone rip-off of the genuine item. It just feels cheap and loose and flimsy when compared to the real thing. But if you have nothing to compare it with, how could you know? You wouldn't think there was much money to be made in counterfeit tin openers, but it seems someone thinks otherwise.

This is a good quality can opener, at a very reasonable price. I paid £4.24 for mine (postage free), and it was supplied by IDEAL_DEALS (Marketplace Dealer). It feels solid, and it is easy to use - I don't have a lot of strength in my hands, but even for me, the leverage is good, and it cuts though the rims of cans very easily, just as if it is slicing thin cheese. It has also been washed several times, and up to now, it shows no signs of corrosion, unlike other can openers I've purchased in the past, which have started to show spots of rust after only a couple of times in the dishwasher.NB: I've only been using it for a few days, and even at this low price, I would expect to have at least 6 months rust-free,trouble-free use out of it, so I will update this review if I experience any problems.UPDATE (July 2015): no sign of rust after well over 6 months of regular use, often left overnight in the dishwasher after the end of the cycle.FINAL UPDATE (March 2016): it's still rust-free, but has now become too blunt to use, so I've thrown it away. Still, that's over a year, and twice as long as I expected it to last, so I'm not complaining.

I have been using this opener regularly for the past couple of months. I like it a lot. It cuts cleanly, not leaving any sharp edges, and feels like it should last a few years. It does require firm effort to snap it onto the can; and for people with weakness or pain in their left wrist/hand, I would not recommend this.If you do buy this, I recommend choosing the free package and postage option. I did and received my opener, quite adequately packaged, in 3 days. I say this because greedy Amazon are charging £6 package and postage !!! More than the cost of the opener !! I see Amazon has implemented costly p&p on a few different low cost items, so do be aware of this sneaky practice.

I previously gave this one star and said it was cheap and nasty and that the five star reviews are either fake or for an earlier version. But i have now changed the rating to five stars. Why the sudden change? Because i was using it wrongly. I thought you had to place it horizontally on the can like every other can opener i have ever used, but you actually have to use it in the vertical position on the side of the can. This is where i believe some of the one star reviewers have gone wrong. Like me, they are probably used to the other way. When you use it properly, it is a five star product and is very easy to open the can with not very much pressure required to turn the handle.

This is a good quality and superb material can opener. It looks super chunky rocky. First tin I tried to open it ended up wrecked the whole tin because I did not know how to put it to the right position. Finally I was success at the second tin and the result was so impressive :DFor someone who is dumb like me, put the opener parallel to the lid. The opener will cut the rim of the lid from outside and when finish the whole lid with rim will come off with the opener :D Remember to give some weight on the lid while you turn the knob. If you do it right the tin will keep turning.

Yes it's just a can opener, but we've got at least four other can openers knocking around the house that cost varying amounts of money, and not one of them can actually do a decent job of opening a can. This one actually works, and does so quickly and with minimal effort.FWIW I followed the advice of other reviewers and bought this direct from Amazon (look for the phrase "Dispatched from and sold by Amazon") rather than through a marketplace seller or a seller merely fulfilled by Amazon, and I suggest you do the same to avoid getting a less functional knock-off.

My other butterfly can openers take off any lid accept that of deep thick ones(E.G. Fray Bentos pie tins). This item even takes them Fray B lids off without any effort whatsoever, Just get the grip to begin with and away you go, it's that light & easy taking them heavy strong lids off i thought it wasn't cutting in so i had to take a look to make certain and yes it was indeed. I've no idea how long this item will last seeing as i've only had it a short time. Well worth getting especially if you love Fray Bentos pies as i do :)

This can opener would not win a beauty contest in can openers. It has white plastic trimmings and is as bland looking as a glass of milk. But it is quite sturdy and opens cans without any problem. Big cans, small cans and rusty cans too. It is quite robust because I've dropped it on the floor several times and it hasn't broken. It also opens cans by cutting into the outside edge or just slicing into the inside of the can - whichever way you prefer.Had it for 3 months now opening on average 5 cans per week and no problems.

I just wanted a cheap and cheerful can opener and was amazed what some cost for such a basic and necessary item. Originally purchased one from Tesco's that barely lasted about a dozen cans if that. The mechanism was rubbish, cutting edge poor - needing a good bit of effort to pierce the tin, and handles felt flimsy and easy to break. This one is the opposite - very sturdy, feels like it will last, and opens cans with no effort at all. Basic and good value - just what I was after.

I've been using an electric can opener for years and had to buy this can opener, due to the very large tin sizes we have and cant use our electric can opener on the very large tins, it took me awhile to find this can opener, it arrive on time, I had a problem at first trying to open the lager tin, then realised I hadn't aligned the opener with the tin, once I done this it went round very easy, the butterfly handle is nice and big.. a very good tool to have in the kitchen

As can openers go this certainly doesn’t feel the sturdiest. It’s pretty cheap but that shouldn’t mean that it cannot do the job adequately. The first one lasted only three cans before the mechanism fell apart making it totally useless. The item was replaced by Amazon and so far the second one has opened ten cans so far without issue. Hopefully the fault was a one off and this one will last at least a couple of years of light use.

The is a conventional can opener that has proved reliable and effective. It takes the lid right off every time, with none of the inconveninece and injury hazard you get with some that cut almost but not quite through the lid. So far, it feels robust, and long lasting, and is comfortable and easy to use. I'd recommend it to anyone wo wants a conventional opener. We had a much more expensive Brabantia one before, but this is better.

I've always had Culinaire magican but they have dropped in quality as to be nigh on useless, so forced to go back to this design. It takes a few punctured cans before you can get it at the right angle to remove the top and even then I found it hard to turn the wheel. Not good for arthritic fingers but there doesn't seem to be much choice I try and buy ring pull if I can.

This is a great tin opener for the price, tins that I had previously struggled to open are no problem now and the plastic handles and grip are very easy on the hands. As the cutting wheel sits inside the rim, it only takes out the inner lid rather than the whole top of the tin so less chance of cutting yourself on sharp edges too, I would definitely recommend it.
