If you have been researching 'manual' can openers here on Amazon, you may have come across my review of the Culinaire Magican Opener from June 2010.I gave it a low two stars then, because it ceased to open cans after about 12 weeks from purchase, and I explained there and then that I was going to go for the Brabantia Essential Opener with plastic handles, and report back after 6 months. Then I promptly forgot about it.....Until a comment reply on the Culinaire came into my mailbox this morning and embarrassed me into actually doing what I promised. So, it might be a little later than promised, but here it is...Firstly....size and build quality. This is a beast of an opener,an awful lot of handfilling metal for less than £8, and, although bulky in the hand, is still easy to hold and operate effectively. When I bought ours the handles were made of thick black plastic that added to the bulk, but I now see Brabantia appear to have sheared off a lot of the plastic to make the handles slimmer and easier to grip for small hands - which will make it even more easy to use.Secondly.....Ease of Use.Without a doubt this is a ten out of ten. The can is gripped securely even in smaller hands and the large opener is easily operated by the thumb and forefinger.Lastly.....Longevity and effectiveness. Here my forgetfulness has actually helped my review. It's been going strong now for 18 months without loss of grip on the opening wheels, and 'the beast' still looks as good in the culinary drawer as it did when I took it out of the wrapper. It appears to have years of use left in it.Overall, a great purchase. It's well built, easy to use, opens all types of can thickness easily and without effort, and it looks like it will go on and on.Hope this helps.

For the past few weeks I've been struggling to wonder why my Culinaire Magican didn't open tins at all. I thought that the tins were faulty! Stupid me lol - after a bit of research on the internet I found that this is a common problem with so called 'Magican' openers. Not so magic after all AND they take the whole top of the tin off which can be lethal as the tin top raw is razor sharp. So, I went exploring reviews and after reading all the wonderful reviews left here by satisfied buyers I ordered this one. I already know Brabantia quality as I own quite a few Brabantia items and they have brought me nothing but delight. I ordered in complete faith and now I've had this a few days I wanted to share how pleased I am about this.Is it possible to be so excited about a can opener? I think it is possible as I am. You should have seen me a few days ago trying to open a can of sweetcorn with that nightmare of a Magican. Please don't buy one of those, they are beyond useless and a total waste of money. This one however, is such an amazingly small price for a beautifully designed, superb quality can opener that opens can as they should be open. Cleanly, swiftly, with no effort whatsoever and it takes the lid from the inside of the can, so not razor sharp edges that are not safe. This is brilliant and I totally love it. I opened 3 cans yesterday, I wanted to open more.Buy it! 100% recommended !!!!!!

I don't know how it is possible to get turned on by a can opener, but trust me, it is.When I opened this I saw it was a quality item straight away, the handles are thick and smooth, but what really impressed me was the twin wheel cutting discs, I was so excited to try it I grabbed a can of custard and set to work. With only minimal pressure the cutting wheels grabbed and pierced the top of the can, again it tool only minimal force on the handle to rotate the cutting wheels and the lid was off - perfect !Not only that but it has a bottle opener on it too, this will come in handy for the 20+ bottles of Budweiser left in the fridge. So as you can see, I am very impressed with this and it was worth every penny,I need to check out the other Brabantia line of products because if they are all this good I can see me shopping with them a helluva lot more.10/10

This is a sturdy & effective tool that performs well without any strain time after time. It also comes at a very reasonable cost. There are a lot of naff tin openers out there (some very cheap & some very expensive). Most ultimately fail or become too inefficient after a short period of time. This is the second Brabantia Essential tin opener we have purchased in the last 7 years, and not because of failure of the first...We purchased this one for use in the caravan, and the original will be staying in the house (hopefully for another 7 years)...I believe that says a lot...Ouch!!! There are a lot of reviews for this item & mine is apparently the most "unhelpful" with one finding it so & no-one finding it "helpful".I am at a loss to understand why (please can someone tell me)... :) ???

After a series of rubbish, flimsy tin openers which eventually wouldn't bite on the tin thanks to cheap gears made from soft steel (including a relatively expensive one from John Lewis) I got this one on the strength of the reviews. We don't open that many tins but it has been perfect every time so far and show no signs of developing any problems. It also feels very sturdy and doesn't flex when attaching it to tins, which I have had on other openers. It's a damn good price too so I don't see that there's anything to complain about. I'm guessing the few bad reviews came from a bad batch or manufacturing defect, which does happen, but don't let them put you off.

Not 100% perfect, but not enough to lose any stars either, the Brabantia opener is one of two can openers we have recently ordered. Our older opener, unbranded, but with chubby black handles and aluminium detailing, has been utterly fabulous for the many years we've used it. This no-name opener has lasted a couple of decades but at last the wear on the teeth reached the point where it was no longer able to work well, and it's now a Can't Opener. It is a top-opener rather than the type that cuts from the side, so we wanted the same type and the choice came down to this Brabantia (a known good make in our household) and the Chinese-made

EDIT Jan 2019! It's still amazing and works perfectly. I want to marry this product.EDIT Sept 2016: It is still as good as the day I bought it. BRILLIANT PRODUCT!Seriously, this can opener is just ace, so so solid and works a treat everytime. I know what you're thinking, how can a can opener be this good? Well trust me, I've used (admittedly bargain shop openers) plenty of absolute bobbins products until I decided to treat myself to this beauty. She'll last a good while too I have no doubt!I think it looks pretty good too, I mean come on, its a flippin can opener at the end of the day, not a Wedgewood.

When I first acquired the opener I had great difficulty using it. I was using it in the same way as that I used for previously used devices by piercing the side of the can at the top. This was a total disaster which placed excessive stress on the device and was difficult to impossible to use finishing up with the cutter walking down the side of the can and the gear wheels remodelling the can with a pretty, unintended corrugated effect.I discovered by accident and experiment that piercing the can through the top edge worked perfectly and I am now very pleased with the performance of the opener.

This is a little cracker - works like a dream even on those dreaded Fray Bentos lids. With my previous can opener I've resorted to all kinds of tricks to get that lid off. Couldn't believe how easily this opener dealt with the pie lid - it took it off cleanly and left no sharp edges to worry about. I wish I'd bought this opener ages ago - my original opener cost about the same but didn't work nearly as well. It's a great kitchen aid. I'd wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone. It also opens tins where the ring-pull has broken off. Lovely, simple design that gets the job done.

With a plastic turnkey and handle or a metal turnkey and handle this is the Rolls Royce of can openers. You will have all experienced the cheap and nasty versions of this kind of hand operated can opener. With this you can rest assured that you, your wife and your family will all be safe from all the injuries and frustration that the cheaper and lesser implements bring.Have no hesitation in buying this one because it will give you silky smooth operation and donkeys years of service. You might be asked by some if you could leave it to them them in your will. igw

At last, a can opener which easily does exactly what it is supposed to do! In recent years, I have tried many different can openers, none of which has done a very good job and most of which have needed far more strength to operate than my weakened hands can now manage. However, this Brabantia Essential Line can opener is a real pleasure to use. It cuts cleanly, gliding smoothly around the tin with very little effort indeed on my part - in fact, I can actually operate this one using just my thumb and forefinger! I can whole-heartedly recommend this can opener.

I've bought a number of can openers after the last few years, and without fail they've all either been disastrous from the off or stopped working after a couple of uses. So far I'm impressed with these. The mechanism is smooth and they're comfortable to hold. Can lids come off easily and quickly, and don't leave razor-like finger-slicing edges exposed (this is always a problem with the openers that take the whole top off - these are the traditional kind that cut inside the rim of the lid). We will see how long they last, but so far I'm impressed.

Removing tin lids is easy, little effort is required as the blade remains sharp and the handles are very comfortable. If they get a bit stiff after a few years, just add a tiny bit of lubricant where the 2 parts slide across each other, you probably won't have to do it again. The construction is solid, ours has been in the dishwasher at least twice per week for the past 2-3 years, they still look and perform as new.The 1 star reviews should just be ignored, this is the best tin opener I've ever owned.

I could not be more happy with this product. Really good buy. My old one was of very poor quality although it cost me 6 pounds and I suffered it for several months until it finally was broken. This one, from the first use was like music to me. It is really easy to open any tin without effort. I have back problems, so avoiding to make efforts is really important to me. Maybe it is more expensive than other tin openers but it is worth it and It has a 5 year guarantee. I highly recommend.

After nearly taking off my fingers again trying to open the lid of a Fray Bentos pie I was determined to buy an opener that would do the job - my missus had previously spent pounds on can openers from the supermarket that were not up to the job and had to be binned part way through opening. The previous reviews on this product helped me choose this one and how glad I am.I thoroughly agree with others - opening a Fray Bentos pie with this is effortless and a lot safer!
