The Zyliss Tin Opener with Lock is a great little gadget which opens tins in super quick time plus it is very easy to twist the actual opener. I suffer badly from a lot of pain in my hands which leaves them weak, therefore I have bought quite a few tin openers which have been no use to me as I found them impossible to use. I have even bought the electric tin openers but with sight difficulties these were also very difficult for me personally to use.In the past I have always had to ask a family member to open any tins which require a tin opener, so when I was offered the Zyliss Tin Opener I thought it was going to be another one which would prove useless for me.First of all I was able to place the tin opener on the ridge of tin without any difficulty as it slipped unto the ridge without any hassle whatsoever. The actual cutting of the tin took very little hand effort from myself, it almost felt like I was cutting through butter. The actual opener is fitted with a magnet which will hold unto the lid using the lock which activates itself when I closed down the actual rubber grip of the tin opener. Make sure the small red button is facing upwards which will allow you to use this function. I actually made a mistake when I first used it as I am left handed and I put the actual tin opener on the tin upside down, which made the magnet hold unto the main tin. As always I learn from my mistakes and I now make sure I have the small red button facing me when putting the tin opener on the ridge of the tin. The Zyliss Tin Opener is a great little household gadget which makes opening tins for me a lot easier without needing any help from a family member, plus the added bonus of having the very handy magnet which hold unto the lid tin which is very sharp, this is held firmly until I press the red button which releases the lid into the bin without me even touching it. I can also hold the tin lid using the tin opener and rinse it under the water tap for the purpose of putting it into the recycling bin without making a mess. The Zyliss Tin Opener even opens the dreaded salmon tin, quickly and easily without mess which for me is a huge bonus.I am happy to recommend the Zyliss Tin Opener with Lock to anyone who wants a tin opener which works quickly, easily without fuss with ease of hand pressure which for me personally is a huge help.

First a little history ...In 1810 an inventor, Peter Durand, received a patent from King George III for the world’s first can made of iron and tin.  In 1858, almost a half century after the can was invented, Ezra Warner patented the first dedicated can opener. This design became known as a “bayonet and sickle” type can opener. It worked by puncturing the can with the bayonet portion, and then the sickle portion would remove the lid.And some more ...Zyliss is a Swiss manufacturer of kitchen products. Zyliss was founded by trained bicycle mechanic, Karl Zysset (1907-1998) in 1951. The company launched its first product, the onion chopper, with the slogan "Zig-Zig Zyliss.Three notable inventions have been developed by Zyliss including the Garlic Press, the Salad Spinner, and the Onion Chopper. And finally the review ...My old and trusted tin opener had finally given up working and was unceremoniously chucked into the bin after a couple of weeks of cutting myself on jagged edges that really shouldn't be there. I was therefore very pleased to be offered this Zyliss Tin Opener with lock to test and review. This Zyliss Can opener has a good solid feel to it and as can openers go it is an attractive item, white with dark grey rubber non slip handles that are very comfortable to hold. The can opener is equally easy to use, I found that the 'Lock n Lift' mechanism works well and never fails to open and remove the can's lid leaving a clean and non jagged edge. The magnet is operated by the red magnet lever on the reverse of the opener. The Zyliss Lock n Lift Can Opener locks onto the can to cut and the magnet lifts and releases the lid for safe and easy disposal. Using the Zyliss Can opener as described removes the possibility of contact with any sharp edges.Another plus point for the Zyliss Lock n Lift Can Opener, is the fact that all Zyliss products have a five year guarantee. Can't be bad!

This tin opener had won the approval of other half and myself when opening a tin of baked beans at lunch time today.Normally have an issue with tin openers and cans that have ring pulls. I suffer with OA in hands and have had carpel tunnel operation in the last six months so some tins are harder to open than others. The ring pulls come off and then left with a tin that is sometimes just unopenable with a tin opener. This one though cut through the tin, even though a ring pull one. Tested it out on that to make sure it would be ok on any other normal not as thick rimmed tin.Easy to use, put on tin then twist the grey knob, two hands are needed one for holding the clamp like handles and twisting, but even with a bad OA day in thumbs able to open tin easily. Press red button and releases from the tin easily. The magnet to grab the lid after to pop into bin was a bit tricky for myself but other half thought it a good useful feature.Think this is a great kitchen gadget along with a five year warranty. The only issue I have is that it is not dishwasher proof. Kind of reminds me of the old fashioned key turn metal ones but chunkier and easier to use and safer too. Have tried various tin openers in the recent couple of years with having OA in hands etc and this one even performs better than the battery operated ones. Batteries or electricity not needed to be able to open tins with this.

We've all had the frustration of using a rubbish tin opener haven't we? And we've all had that begrudging feeling of paying £2 for a new one, just in case it's as rubbish as the one you currently own.Despite the higher price tag on this tin opener it REALLY does justify it. It works perfectly every time.It takes off the lid, leaving a smooth edge on the main body of the tin - I prefer this to the side opening ones where you get a sharp edge on the main body of the tin.To use, you just attach it to the top of the tin, squeeze the (nicely rubber coated) handles to lock, rotate and open! It even has a magnet on the head of it,to grab the lid of the tin as it comes loose…and a trigger release to deactivate the magnet should you wish to deposit the tin lid without having to touch it (handy with oily products like tuna in oil). This tin opener would be perfect for anyone who struggles with the constant squeezing required to use a normal tin opener, as you have to hold it tight all the way round, but this just requires one quick squeeze and it's locked. Also, the turning handle is nice and substantial, not like some of the smaller cheap metal tin openers which can cause serious injury when they fly off the tin with all the force you're using trying to get it to work.

This is the very latest incarnation of the old-fashioned "butterfly" tin opener of my pre-war youth - which you can still buy, evidence enough that it was a landmark design. All that is different today are the stylish clothes - in this case the soft-grip handles and butterfly, plus a clip which keeps the handles closed when not in use - very helpful for storage - and a little magnet in the end which enables you to pick out the severed lid without cutting your fingers on its sharp edge or getting tomatoe sauce on your fingers. It's nicely shaped, very comfortable in the hand, and reassuringly heavy. All told, it's about as good as you can expect of this ancient original design, and if this is the type you prefer, I don't know of a better one.But whilst this may well be the ultimate in the development of the old-style tin-opener, my first choice in equipment for this purpose is still the ground-breaking Kuhn Rikon, which doesn't produce sharp edges at all, and not only also lifts off the lid - but enables you to put it firmly back on again to look as though it's never been removed.Incidentally, I had to look very hard amongst the 30 or so tins in my store cupboard to find one which didn't have a ring-pull !

We have enjoyed Zyliss products for some time now and we owned a Zyliss safety can opener which I broke and this item is set to replace. So what is good about these products? Firstly we open very few tins now and the electric model we paid a lot of money for has been despatched to the cupboard as we rarely use it. This item will be brought into action every couple of weeks to open the occasional can which does not have a ring pull lid.So how do they work? In this case, you press the red button on the top, which opens the jaws of the opener, clamp the can in the jaws and twist the cutting wheel using the rubberised knob. Nothing new here! The edges are nicely cut with very little chance of an accidental cut or nick.I believe that these items are well designed and allow for the quick and easy removal of can lids.I there anything that I don't like about these items? Not really, It has a magnet on the underside, which you use to lift the lid off the opened can and a trigger to release the lid into a recycling bin; no cut fingers. At the end of the day, this is an improved version of tin openers I used quite a lot a few years ago, albeit with nice non-slip handles and a magnet to take the lid off.

You'd laugh , if you saw our old tin opener, it's like one of those basic camping ones, and a toss up between cutting raggedly, and the prong bending. In fact, I've never bought a can opener that actually worked, and my wife has decided that I'm buying no more! Well, all that has just changed because the Zyliss Tin Opener , works beautifully... a can opener supreme! You'd expect that really, because Zyliss make quality products. They're a Swiss company who started off making garlic presses, for which they became famous, and I imagine a tin opener is no 'sweat' for them. You know this product is going to be good , it just reeks quality, and style...an ergonomically designed tin opener, what about that? It's easy to use, making no mess at all. My wife is impressed, and I've gained the upper hand now, by telling her not to use it, until I have shown her how it works ! . Thanks to Zyliss, I've gone from an ostracized opener, to the King of Tin :).Seriously though folks, this is a superb locking tin opener, which I'm recommending to all. BTW, our old opener is heading for the bin...happy turning :).

This is one of the best can openers I have tried, and I've owned dozens over the years.I was slightly puzzled by the reviewer who gave it one star and referred to it opening at the side of the can. He got it wrong.I hope he reads further reviews as it isn't a side opener (like a Magican, my previous opener-of-choice.)You press the red unlock button to open the arms of the device vertically. Position the opener in place with the cutting wheel inside the rim of the can and press down. The large oval knob to move the turning wheel turns the can round easily under very little pressure. When the can is fully open and the lid detached, you then use the integral magnet to lift the lid.Pressing the little red lever underneath the can opener levers the lid away from the magnet and drops it in to the bin, without risking a cut from sharp edges.I find it much easier to use than the Magican as it can be really difficult to prise open that opener to release the lid - which sometimes gets jammed.I do recommend this for users with arthritis, it is significantly easier to use than any other I have tried.

Without exaggeration this has changed my life, I can enjoy Tuna sandwiches again without having to clean up oil from the worktop! My previous opener removed the outer rim of lids resulting in spills and ragged edges, this takes the lid away from the inside then it is safely picked up by the magnet for convenience. The handles are both sturdy and comfortable to hold, I was amazed at how little effort was needed to break through the lid, just a little squeeze together of the handles and you are started. To open all I needed was was my finger and thumb to turn the lever, very smooth to operate and a really clean edge. If you or someone else in the household has dexterity problems or suffers from arthritis this is perfect, just get one anyway for ease of use. I have struggled over the years to find one that really does a good job, wasted money and a drawer full of junk! A further bonus is no more batteries running down and unlike electric openers this one is perfectly safe to wash.In my opinion this is worth every penny and I am going to buy more products from the same company.

We have made the mistake, oh so many times, of purchasing cheap tin openers in the past and as with everything in this life, you pretty much get what you pay for and they've blunted, broken and generally been a whole pile of garbage. This Zyliss Tin Opener with Lock (not Sean!) boasts a good grip with a raised rubber coating on both handles plus the rotating cutter - something cheaper models don't have. This makes it easy to open tins even if you've got damp or floury hands etc, ditto if you suffer from reduced hand mobility. The lock grip ensures that the opener remains in place when in tin opening motion and centres the gravity of the unit. One absolute bonus is that the tin edges are filed down to a smooth finish, thus avoiding the ragged, somewhat dangerous edges which other openers cause. The design itself is ergonomic, sleek and rather wonderful. It's also easy to clean, either manually or in the top basket of the dishwasher. In conclusion: a great piece of kit for any kitchen and hopefully it'll last a good few years. Excellent value for money.

I had been looking for a reliable tin opener for a long time. I went through a sucession of cheaper ones bought on the high street but after only a few weeks they stopped working and had to be thrown away. This opener is much better. It is built to last and has a special mechanism which causes the upper and lower handle to lock together as you attach the opener to the top of the tin. This makes it much more stable and produces a firmer grip on the tin. Opening the tin is smooth and easy after that. The locking mechanisim can be easily opened after you have finished. There is also a magnet built into the opener that allows you to lift the severed tin top away safely if you need to.I would certainly recommend this to anyone looking for a reliable opener. It is worth the price. (Incidentally I did buy the Chef Remi at the same time as this opener, but sadly the Remi was defeated by tins of Branston Baked Beans and Ambrosia Devon Custard after only a few weeks. After that it would not even grip the tins properly let alone open them!)

Modern scissor grip tin openers are quite fashionable and getting more stylish; certainly a step up from their pressed steel counter-parts and they come in a range of prices from next to nothing to quite a lot, although a lot less than professional kitchen models. Nevertheless, they all tend to fail in a similar way; that is, when they fail to grip and, consequently, fail to cut. The locking feature on the Zyliss tin opener is, presumably, to avoid this failing and thus extend the life of the opener. The device does, indeed, grip well, cutting down on the can lid, rather than from the side, and the cutting action is smooth and very positive. It has a solid and comfortable feel, working well to remove the lid all the way round. There is an additional device, a magnet to grab the cut out lid from inside the can and then a little press-button to release the lid into the recycle bin. This works quite well, too, although it does get a bit messy, requiring a quick wipe down afterwards. All-in-all, a quality tin opener.

This tin opener is sturdy and robust and so far has opened all the tins I've tried it with. (Will update the review if this changes). It is more expensive than other manual tin openers, but it does have the feel that it will last a long time, so is probably worth the investment.I think another review mentioned that it doesn't come with instructions. I am absolutely hopeless at figuring out how things work but I managed to use this first time without too many problems. Once you've worked out how to seat it on the tin then you're pretty much well away. The large handles mean it doesn't dig into your hands while you're using it and because it has a locking mechanism you don't have to do that thingwhere you're trying to squeeze the handles together as hard as you can for the tin opener to work.My mum (who has arthritis in her hands) has also been able to use it without any problems and has said she prefers it to her automatic tin opener.

There have been many attempts to improve in the can opener. I’ve tried many over the past 40 years or so, and even been suckered into buying a few promising but ultimately hopeless gadgets. What attracted me to this one was the manufacturer’s name. I’ve got a few things from Zyliss, and they’ve all been very well designed and constructed, and importantly all worked. This can opener couldn’t be easier to use. Close it onto the rim of a can, until the two halves click together, and then turn the big handle. The lid comes off, and non-sharp can edges remain. The lid may be snapped up by the magnet, and released into the bin, all without ever touching it.The opener is big and easy to hold, and its mechanism runs like clockwork. It looks good and it works like a charm. Being Zyliss, it is expensive. It is made with high-grade materials, and certainly won’t rust, but that all comes with a high price tag. It’s the only downside of it.

This is a very easy to use and sturdy tin opener. The main selling feature, is a locking system (which automatically locks the levers once you press them together--and, once the tin is opened, you press a red button to release them again). It's a great feature, which works every time. The only problem with this is if (like my mother) you suffer arthritis in your wrists, it is quite difficult (though achievable) to lock them. Perhaps, though, if this is a problem, then you would be better getting an electrical opener anyway.Other than that, no problems whatsoever. They feel very well constructed (nice and weighty--though not "too" heavy) and the turning mechanism is extremely smooth. They have a good feel (with rubber handles) and come with a 5 year guarantee. Even if they only last half of that, I'd have gotten my money's worth from buying the cheap ones in supermarkets that break in 6-8 months.
