So I've had a gravy separator before and loved being able to use the juices from cooking the roast to make my own gravy. My old one bit the dust so I went looking for a new one and found this Oxo one. It was all exactly the same apart from the red stopper. It claimed to prevent the fat entering the spout. It sounded too good to be true and I could never work out how this magic was supposed to happen (and I'd searched the reviews in vain to figure it out!).Well, today was about the fourth time I've used it, and on this occasion (roast beef) there was loads of fat and lots of juices (as I'd added hot water to the pan and scraped off all the browning and herbs etc). The red stopper was in the spout from the outset, and lo and behold, this time, I could clearly see that the fat was being held back and was much higher in the main jug than the liquid in the spout. Amazing! (See photo)It turns out there is only a thin aperture from the main jug into the spout which lets the juice at the bottom through. I'm no physicist but I'm guessing that the air pressure from the air held in the spout, held in by the stopper, keeps the gravy from shooting up the spout to equalise the levels, as you would usually see.I poured the juices out until the fat was about to come through, and then afterwards the fat was left behind - hooray!

Edit - review update after usingI confirm my 5 star for this. It seems slightly odd to ram the stopper into the spout and then pour the fatty gravy into it but only a tiny bit of the liquid migrates into the bottom of the spout keeping all the oil/fat where you want it. Once it has settled, removing the stopper let's you pour almost to the last drop without getting any fat out. My only regret is that I didn't buy the bigger one first time around. Typical piece of OXO kit, by which I mean, good quality.Original reviewBah humbug, I bought the 500ml one by mistake (meant to get the 1000ml) after flicking back and forth between different brands/pictures,my mistake but take care before confirming order.I have't used it yet but it looks solid enough and the capacity will undoubtedly do the job for my wife and I and probably for 4 but not sure how I'll manage when I am making gravy for 8 - 12.This is a better design than the previous type I used which had a cock-eyed method of blocking the spout hole with an integral part of the strainer/handle that was poking down inside, all very clumsy. Was glad when it fractured and started to crack up. I will update if there is anything to add but every OXO product I have used to date has been quality so I expect the same from this.PeterFromSandhurst

This is a great little jug for separating the meat juices and the fat from your Sunday roast. It is really easy to use, simply pour the liquid from around the side of your joint through the sieve top ( this catches any nasty bits and pieces too) and then leave ( i prefer to leave it somewhere cold to let the fat solidify and have even been known to pop it in the freezer for 10 minutes) the fat will slowly rise to the top and then you simply pour through the spout.Because the spout is low down it pours from under the floating fat and you save yourself the calories and the heart attack! The red bung in the spout stops the liquid going in there by pressurising it until the juices have had time to separate and so avoids fat getting in there. This is a simple idea that works well. The plastic used is a nice high quality and the handle comfortable to grip and non slip. There is nothing not to like.

I've had a number of different plastic fat separators and most have become cracked over time with exposure to the high temperatures of hot fat coming from a roasting tray. However, this one, that I've had for couple or years or so, has not cracked and does the job well. It has a good capacity and the removable sieve catches larger bits and pieces that have not dissolved, though I do sometimes have to pass the separated gravy through a finer sieve before serving. It is dishwasher-proof and doesn't retain any meaty smells after cleaning, which is a bonus as I have another use for it in which any carry-over smells/tastes would be a problem, viz., I collect the outflow liquid from a juice extractor for such fruits as pineapple, that create a foam on the surface of the juice, straight into the fat separator. I can then pour off the clearer juice leaving the foam behind.

I usually only need a gravy/fat separater once a year at Thanksgiving with my turkey, and once in awhile at Christmas. But, at that time, you really need a good fat separater. One of my daughters and her husband are very health conscious, and they hate fat. They will eat gravy as long as there is no fat that rises to the top. This separater is so good, that it is difficult to see the fat. Only I know it is there. This comes equipped with an integrated strainer, this separator and server is perfect for both preparing and pouring gravy. Plus, it can hold up to 4 cups--enough for all of my family. It is recommended by Cook's Illustrated, and hat is more than enough for me.Highly Recommended.prisrob 09-22-13

Good product but the 500ml is quite small. I cook for two but always like to cook enough to have leftovers to freeze. If cooking small meals, it's ok but for bigger meals I would recommend the 1 litre jug.For those finding it hard to use: Put the stopper in the nozzle and strainer on top of the jug. Pour in your juices, the strainer will stop any bits from going into the jug. (Tip: use a muslin on top of the strainer for even smoother gravy). The nozzle stopper traps air inside , which stops the fat mixing with the gravy. Let it stand for about a minute, the fat will rise to the top. Then remove the stopper and slowly pour out the juices through the nozzle. The fat should remain in the jug.

This is a fantastic product which completely helps to separate gravy or stock from the fat that floats on the top. It is used all the time pretty much. Its really good to have the strainer in the lid which stops all the bigger bits getting into the liquid and makes it easier to throw them away. Also the stopper is good for keeping the contents fresher in the fridge. Another thing is the handle which has a firm rubber feel making it easy to use and grip. My only criticism of this product is that it doesn't really look classy... If they only manufactured one which was slightly better colour co-ordinated say and made of glass then I would have bought that instead!!

An excellent addition to the kitchen gadgets. It does exactly what it’s supposed to do and separates the fat leaving a rich, lean gravy. But don’t forget to use the provided plug to stop fat entering the spout. It is very easy to clean with hot, soapy water. You’ll most likely need a bottle brush to clean the spout but, as long as you’ve remembered to use the plug, it won’t get very greasy. It’s also dishwasher and microwave friendly; an added boost for a busy family. We have the 1 litre size (we like gravy) but there is a 500 millilitre size (just under a pint) available for those who only want smaller quantities.Highly recommended for all kitchens.

Bought this gravy/fat separator to use with my slow cooker so that I could eat as healthly as possible. I have tried these sort of things before with not very good results, however, this separator really works! It easily separates the fat from the gravy because the exit spout is so low that the fat sits well clear of it. Added to this the plastic filter at the top keeps the larger bits from falling into the gravy. If I had one minor complaint it would be that this filter is not fine enough to stop the smaller bits from passing through, but pouring the defatted gravy through a small tea strainer if required does the job!

I cook a lot, especially with cheaper cuts of meat, usually in my slow cooker. But as someone who has to watch my calories, I have spent years dabbing the gravy with kitchen roll to pull of the extra fat. This is so easy to use. Leave the little red thing in the spout when you pour in your gravy, stock, or whatever. The remnants are left in the top, you can re add or discard. Leave a while, then remove the red bung thing, and pour off the goodness, leaving the fat behind. Added bonus is that it's from Goodgrips, so I know it will last. Ps It all goes in the dishwasher, except the little red thingy.

The key feature of this gravy separator is that it's 500ml rather than 1 litre. I don't have room in my kitchen (for another gadget) that is oversized. For the type of cooking I do, I find this size is perfect - and as it fits inside my measuring jug it doesn't take up any extra room in my cupboard. The construction is solid. It has a textured handle that you can grip even if your hands are greasy. The plug on the spout keeps the fat out as you fill it, and the strainer on the top hold back any lumpy bits.Great design, and welcome addition to my kitchen kit :-)

After finally receiving this (2nd attempt) I am very pleased with it. You can have fat free gravy, you must make sure all of the juice is put in, in one go as adding after you have pulled out the rubber plunger mixes it all up and you will get fat.I miss my multi purpose separator which had interchangeable slides so you could separate fat, strain fine and strain not so fine! It gave up the ghost after 22 years and even with an araldite patch up job on the seams it perished and I couldn't find the same anywhere. Now, If my gravy is too lumpy out comes the sieve!

We've had quite a few fat separators and this is the best one we've come across. The others have tended to have a plastic insert that goes in front of the spout, which works fine but can be fiddly and can allow some fat up the spout if you don't take it out very carefully. This OXO one makes do with a plastic plug that holds the liquid in the base of the jug, allowing you to tip the jug before taking the stopper out, so that you can get just the watery part out without any fat. The top sieve to catch bits is a helpful addition too. All told, highly recommended.

I have used it for the first time good product. Some people have had some problems with this because the instruction's are not clear and do not understand how it works.1/ you put the bung in tight, this will form an air lock in the spout.2/ you poor the gravy in.3/ The gravy will not travel in to the spout because of the bung which causes an air lock in the spout of the jug..4 You take out the bung and pour.5/ The bung, or stopper is not a filter for the gravy..6 Try this with hot water first, then you understand how it works,7/ Hope this helps everyone

The wide opening with the "strainer" holes is genius and mean you don't have to be too accurate when pouring the pan juices from the roasting pan into it. It is large enough to hold a lot of juice. As it is large it is fairly easy to clean (the spout is trickier)And the fat is separated very quickly and easily. If you are looking for a fat separator, I highly recommend it. This is the best one I have used to date. Oh and don't forget to keep the silicon stopper in the spout as you pour your pan juices in or some of the fat will end up escaping into the spout!
