I bought both the jacket and pants last fall and have used them for backcountry/glacier skiing, chairllift skiing, and fast-and-light day hikes. I am very happy with the product. I have owned/used many different types of storm outerwear: Gore tex triple layer, patagonia storm coating. I found the gore tex 2-layer to be as breathable but not quite as waterproof as the gore tex 3 layer. Pressure points like elbows and knees seemed to damp up more than the heavier, stiffer gore tex. But I didn't find it to be enough of a problem to reduce the rating to four stars, since I am very happy with other aspects of this jacket. The fabric feels very thin and light, yet retains some of the stiffness of the heavier 3-layer fabrics. As other reviews have noted, there is no lining on the inside and it will feel rubbery against bare skin--but not clammy, it breathes well. I read a negative review here that the fabric ripped easily. I got my pants caught in a chairlift just like that reviewer did, and had no problems with the fabric catching or ripping. It definitely feels flimsy but it has been very strong and durable.--Pants fit as expected. As noted, there are no front pockets and this is a huge annoyance, but not enough to ding it a star. The side vents are perfectly designed, and go from the bottom cuff up to the hip bone. These pants DO NOT zip apart at the waist, you will have to step into them, which is far easier to do in a drving wind than fool with trying to snap the waist together. When I bought these I did not expect to be using them in the very warm temperatures of spring/summer skiing. But the vents work so well that I am comfortable even when otherwise working up a sweat.

I'll keep this review short and sweet.- They stay on: a combination of rubber to the posterior waste (quite clever), an elastic drawcord, and hooks for suspenders if the first two don't work (they did for me. I did not have to pull them up once during my three 10+ mile test hikes).- Rain pants have to do three things: be waterproof, have ventilation, breath. the 3/4 zip with the button at the ankle is nice. While wearing ankle gaiters, you can unzip from the ankle up, and the button keeps them in place. You can also unzip from the top down. This actually does "dump heat" like many rain clothes say (but don't deliver).- Speaking to the above, they were waterproof (although like all rain clothes, they will wet out with enough contact with water. Fortunately, this doesn't really happen with pants since pants don't see continuous contact with water like your shoulders or hood). The 3/4 allowed for great ventilation (I hiked with the zips mostly open; under I was wearing a lightweight baselayer that I use for skiing. At the end of all three of my hikes my baselayer was mostly dry). As for their "breathability", I would put them on par with all other gore-tex clothes.- They are sturdy enough that I would consider using them as my hardshell for mountaineering. I would need to test this further to give it my 100% support, but it is something I am planning to try out.I'm not sure why anybody else bothers to make rain pants. These are the ones to use. I tried several other brands (Patagonia Torrentshell, Marmot Precip and a pair of Columbia's). Unlike these other ones, my Foray's fit nicely, stayed on and worked great.

I have many products from OR at this point and all of them exceed my expectations. I have owned waterproof pants from other companies and these seem to outshine the competition. I have tested the waterproofing with a controlled water test under the sink and the water beads up across the entire fabric. Goretex is an expensive material, but you get what you pay for, and that is a quality product that is completely waterproof. The legs are a little long, but that is to be expected when the legs have no sizing option (I really wish that would change!). The Foray pants are comfortable (for waterproof pants) and fit over my work uniform very well with some room to spare. This is what I was shooting for and it fits the bill. The knees are sown for articulation and should work well for both cycling and hiking. There are no belt loops but there are rings for suspenders if that is necessary. Another feature that I enjoy about them is the leg zips that go pretty much up the entire leg. It will make for getting in and out of them a much easier process. Overall a quality product from OR that I recommend.

Used these in Patagonia where it rained almost everyday. Wore them as overpants everyday and unzipped the legs from hip to ankle when the rain stopped to allow for ventilation. Zipped back up when it started to rain again. They worked exactly as desired. Only issue is they developed two small tears around one of the ankles. Patagonia is definitely hard on clothing and gear. Took one star off since I have been waiting for two weeks to get a response from OR on how to get them fixed under their warranty.

Compared to other "waterproof" pants that use a coated nylon fabric, GORE TEX is the way to go. With my previous high quality coated nylon pants, after 6 hours of rain I was soaked through. While I've only used these pants a couple of times, so far I am happy with their performance. The 6 hour rain test has yet to come. If they pass, I'll give them 5 stars. I like the side venting and they fit easily over my boots. The medium size fits me well over clothing - I'm 5'7" 130 lbs with a 32" - 33" waist.

Haven't used them for their intended purpose yet, but they feel substantial and rugged enough to work on backpacking trips involving some bushwhacking. Love the strong zippers on the sides. Opened side zippers will work nice for more ventilation when it's not pouring out while hiking. The retention on the bottom cuffs works nicely too.

Extremely lightweight, built well, worn in snow several times and worked perfectly. for length, I'm 6'3" and the legs are perfect walking length, just long enough when moving to snap around ankle on boots. Only nice-to-have would be a metal hook for ankle elastic to clip to shoelaces, otherwise these couldn't be better.

Did a trip to Mt. Whitney and these pants where a life saver. 60mph wind and I didn't feel a thing from the waist down. Highly recommend these. I am 6ft tall 185lbs and usually wear a size 32 34 pants and the XL fit a little baggy but I didn't mind

I gave this pant to my boyfriend and he liked it very much. He uses it over his jeans in rainy weather, and also with a baselayer pant in the snow. He said the zippers are very comfortable to put it on or off without taking out his boots.

These are simply great. They're light weight, Goretex, easy to get on and off.I wish they had pockets on the front, but at this price point I can't complain too hard.Better than so many of the others I've tried.Just buy them.

Outdoor research never disappoints! Goretex works as advertised, and the venting options helps out during more strenuous hikes. Being able to pack it up into it's own pocket is another big plus.

19.9.2017

I usually wear a XL (40) pants. I ordered XXL to go over my hiking pants. The size should work out ok. But, vigorous activity will not be possible without damage to the pants.

1.7.2014

Excellent overall quality and value. The liner material is a bit sticky and uncomfortable against bare skin, so plan to wear a layer underneath - even in warmer weather.

25.7.2017

I got the extra large tall pants. They are a bit baggy, but I plan to use them in winter as well. My winter wool pants are substantially thicker than my summer shorts.

15.4.2016

I'm 5'10" 190 and the large fit good over flannel lined jeans. I hope this helps you select the right size. These pants are light and very comfy! OR never disappoints!
