The pants have a relaxed waist, stretchable. I've hiked with them on 40 degree scouting trips through the Appalachia's and also in 120 degree heat in the desert in Qatar. They are made of polyester, which naturally absorbs zero moisture vs cotton which absorbs 27 times its weight in water. That means they will dry very quickly. A couple hours out on a line will dry them effectively, or being worn after a rainstorm. Because they don't absorb much moisture, they are surprisingly warm, and they do a decent job of blocking the wind. That wind resistance is what makes them OK to hike in fall/spring weather when the temperatures are in the upper 40s, lower 50s.You'll want a thicker material if hiking in anything colder than that.In extreme heat, they do wick the moisture away. In Qatar I found that after travelling 200 ft from an air conditioned bunker across the desert (and it's a wet moisture due to the Persian Gulf), you were completely drenched in sweat. That heat is just a few degrees away from being the maximum that people can endure due to the moisture in the air. The paints would dry quickly once inside again, and protect you from the sun. They are a very light cloth that doesn't feel uncomfortable in extreme heat.I would say the durability is pretty good, I've had one of the forward pocket in one of my paints fail due to the stitching, and some of the material is now starting to look thread bear. For those doing things on the water, I've found these shorts travelling in a rigid inflatable boat in salt water will again dry pretty quickly after being dosed by a bow wave, cotton underwear will be your down fall! Salt absorbs water, and in and of itself can quickly lead to rashes, this fabric absorbs no saltwater per say, so will dry especially if you splash down with a bit of fresh water shortly after you've landed. In sum, they are very effective pants to wear while boating. They pack very light, and do not show wrinkles. You can pack them down in a backpack and they weight almost nothing and take up very little room. The bottoms are compact enough you can remove them and put them in the front pockets. The belt isn't very fancy, but I haven't had any fail, and I've found they are the ideal size for emergency tourniquets (tie it, don't use the buckle), which I've had to do. It's probably not everyone's list of reasons to buy a belt, but unlike leather and dress belts, this can be used to synch something down. I've also used it to synch down loads backpacking when I couldn't find anything else and SUV roof racks. The color works well, and unlike everything else I have, has never born out a stain. Again, that's a nice feature of polyester, the dye is permanent, everything else washes away like engine grease, blood, mustard, dirt. When wet they don't look obviously wet with the color unlike the lighter versions. They don't fade, or pile, but will eventually start to wear, like everything else.In appearance, they aren't formal wear, but from casual dining in Doha to Annapolis, they fit the bill. Of course, they don't look out of place on a military base or a camping trip. They aren't so GI that they scream "search me for hidden weapons and cans of chewing tobacco".Overall I say they deserve around 4.5 stars, with the sole objection being a bit better stitching for the pants pockets, though I have carried probably fairly heavy things in them, so they were under a bit of load.Since I can't choose 4.5 stars, I choose 5.

Let me start by saying I read a lot of reviews stating these pants run small. This may be true for some, but for a 26 year-old 5'11" 155lb frame guy like myself these fit absolutely perfect in 32x30. Now that that's out of the way, let's get to the good stuff:These are the most comfortable pair of pants I own. The synthetic fabric is extremely lightweight, breathable, yet retains durability and excellent stain resistance. The tusk color is basically khaki despite the grayish overtone shown in the online picture. If they become wet they'll dry within minutes, a must for hiking pants. Columbia includes a military webbing-style belt with the pants that I would only use in an emergency situation.I'm not sure which kind of emergency situation calls for a cheap belt, but hey, it's there. The zipper separator runs just above the knee which prevents chafing on extended hikes. The left cargo pocket is zippered, the right pocket Velcro. The zippers all seem solid, with seams blended wonderfully. Now for easy reading, my list:PROS:+ EXTREMELY comfortable. I cannot stress this enough, it's almost like being naked from the waist down.+ Very lightweight yet very durable. I've been stuck with numerous thorn bushes with nothing to show of it in the pant.+ Dries exceptionally quickly with superior breathability allowing sweat to dissipate fast keeping your legs cool.+ Convertible-style is a premium. Pants in the morning, shorts in the evening. Detachable legs are labeled at the zipper "L" and "R" for quick reattachment.+ The waistline features a 2-inch stretch-band right above the hipbones, which, when coupled with a stretchable belt allows for quick and easy pissing. This doesn't seem like much, but when you have to relieve yourself and don't have to dick around adjusting a belt makes for getting back on the trail that much faster.+ Pockets are big enough to stow away items for easy access without feeling cumbersome or loose.+ Zipper banding around the leg-separator sports a layer of fabric that prevents metal-on-skin chafing.CONS:- No zipper at the bottom of the legs, you may have to remove your hiking boots to remove the pants. If however you wear hiking shoes with less profile this may not be an issue, but I wear boots and they need to be removed first.- Belt loops are a little narrow, it can sometimes take longer to insert or remove belt than it should. That being said, these are merely inconveniences that do not degrade overall performance. All in all, these are my favorite pair of pants. I don't just use them for hiking, they make excellent casual wear as well: they look plain sharp. The function over formalities earns a solid 5/5 from me.

Standard for all my reviews: When reviewing products, I always remain objective and honest about the product or service. I always review with information that I feel others would like to know about the product as I always assume what I'm writing will influence for or against the purchase. I always try to go above and beyond surface characteristics and input into quality, value and application. Most importantly, I will always end the review with an answer as to whether I'd purchase the product again which I believe is the most critical question pertaining to the item. To manufacturers: Want me to review your items, just let me know! Was looking for hiking pants to take with us on our three week adventure in New Zealand with temps in the mid to high 50s and some rain..After trying multiple other brands in hopes of finding hiking pants that didn't look ridiculous on me, had the right weight, pockets and feel, I ended up with two pairs of the Silver Ridge from Columbia, 34x34.I'm 6'1"/190 and a true 34x34 fit in most pants. Many other hiking pants were very tight through the thighs and crotch or didn't hang well in the length. In most cases, I haven't found hiking pants to be fashionable so it's about looking as non-ridiculous as possible while still having pants that are functional.Once these pants arrived, the material seemed light enough and the colors were true to their on-screen appearance. Trying them on I was immediately hopeful. They were light but hung well, didn't crowd my legs in the thigh and the crotch areas wasn't overly tight as I've found in other pants of this style. I decided to keep both pairs based on fit alone. In service, these pants worked great. While I never unzipped the legs to convert them to shorts, I did use them quite often in both low 60s temps all the way down to the high 40s and low 50s in rain. The pants aren't waterproof but they do seem to shed water well enough for my taste. They were easily warm enough in lower temps and considered converting them to shorts in the upper 50s/low 60s. These pants would function well in the upper 30s in my opinion. The pockets are well laid out and function well, not overly saggy or too tight. The fabric belt isn't fancy but does the job. As mentioned previously, the fit is true at a 34/34 size which I needed and immediately won me over. Returning from our trip, I'm really glad I have these two pairs of pants in my drawer for the light hiking we do here in the PacNW. I'd recommend these pants to anyone looking for an all-around light weight hiking pant.

I tried out the pants on very hot and humid day in Disneyland and couldn't be happier. The legs zip out readily, and each have a sewn-in woven label marked 'L' & 'R' for quick, frustration-free removal and re-attachment. These came in handy as the weather was better suited for shorts. The shorts come up to about 10" on the outseam - which is just right for me since I'm not a tall person at all. With the legs re-attached, I was expecting the leg fit to be similar to bog-standard military cargo pants which are roomy (maybe too roomy for me) midway below the thighs. I was pleasantly surprised that the legs fit a little narrower than plain 'straight' cut - and presented a nice silhouette. The fabric is very light, and dries off quickly inspite of the fact I was drenched. The built-in belt was also a plus for me, since an external belt would only be another cinch point where perspiration will pool which is uncomfortable and unpleasant to say the least. The fact that it's made of some sort of nylon webbing also meant that it wasn't going to absorb as much water/sweat.The cargo pockets were where my hands would naturally rest when standing, and it was a convenient to put my wallet there for easy access. The bonus of having it there instead of the back or front slide pocket was that it would swing away from the body and not sponge up the perspiration. The cargo pockets are secured shut by either a zipper (left) or a velcro-lined flap (right) -- perfect for my peace of mind especially when surging with throngs of people. After a full-day at the park, I had to air out both my 'Dri-Fit' top and my pants overnight before packing them away for washing. The next day, I did a uhm sniff test (eeew!) just to check if the fabric retained any odors. Am happy to report that the pants had a very faint remnant - enough for one to know it was used - but not at all objectionable. The Dri Fit top was another thing altogether and if your snacking as you read this, please read this part later. It was NASTY. To be fair though, the shirt's at least 4 years old so I guess it's also a function of age as I've noticed with some gym clothes. So far it's been a five star experience. My only concern for now is how the pants' fabric will wear in the near future. Some of the Columbia shirts I own have a tendency to snag and pill which I guess is the nature of man-made fibers. But you can't put a price on the comfort you gain when you're not bothered by a drenched waist and lower back. Plus, you won't smell as nasty, too.

First of all, the shipping was extremely fast. I placed the order on Friday night around 11 PM, and the pants were at my door steps on Sunday before 11 AM. I was expecting a 2-workday delivery but Amazon did it over the weekend! Now about the pants. I normally buy 32W/32L pants and in most cases they hang on my hips, not at my waist. I like it that way because it gives me a little more room around my hips even though the legs are about 1" too long. These pants, however seem to be a small 32W. They actually sit at my waist. There is a little bit of elastic in the waistband, and for me this elastic is already somewhat stretched out- I feel maybe a 1/2" give when I pull on the waistband.Another thing is that recently I lost about 3 lbs, so let's hope that i'll keep it off, or else I may find these pants to be on the tight side. The legs are also narrow, but my thighs are not overly muscular so this will not be a problem. I prefer the slim look rather than bagginess in my pants anyway, and there is no restriction of leg movements. However, if you are on the other (plus) side of 32W you may find these pants a little too tightly fitting.Overall the workmanship seems to be good, no missing or unraveling stitches as reported by other reviewers, but I've only worn them for a few hours so far. I bought these pants for traveling and I think they will fit the bill very well. They are light-weight (much thinner than jeans) and will not take much room in a suitcase. The color should be good to hide some unavoidable dinginess accumulated in airplanes, airports, buses and taxis.UPDATE: After wearing these pants around the house (mostly sitting and watching TV) for two days I realized that they actually felt a little too tight around the waist when sitting. While they might've been fine for just walking around, this made them a poor choice for long air travels (flights, layovers, etc). I ordered another pair, this time 34W32L, and these look as good but feel much better; i hardly notice that i'm wearing them. I think that if Columbia made 33W size it would be perfect for me. I've returned the smaller pair. The benefit of having Amazon Prime is that the whole process was very fast and simple

I am a woman who does a lot of hiking and backpacking in humid, rainy climates. My old convertible nylon pants are worn so thin that they are transparent when wet. I found that women's hiking pants have changed in the last several years, and not for the benefit of serious hikers. It's always been difficult to find women's pants with nice big pockets, but the women's pants I looked at had pockets that would barely hold a kleenex. Most of them had very low waistbands that sat just above the hip, where my backpack would push the pants down over my butt. The zippers were placed too high, where the pants would ride up when worn as shorts. And almost all of them contain Spandex, which stays wet for days if I happen to sit on a wet log.I found an all-nylon pair at a large outfitter (the one known by its three initials, which start with R), but they didn't fit well--too big in the waist, too tight in the thighs, and the color had a militaristic olive drab sheen that wasn't visible in the picture on the outfitter's website. To avoid return shipping, I took a long excursion to the outfitters, where I shopped around and found these. The 32Wx30L fits me pretty well. Not too loose on my 31" waist and just the right length. They are not as roomy in the seat and thighs as my old pants, but definitely more roomy than a pair of Columbia's women's "Palmerton Peak" size 10 pants that I found at a local outlet mall. The nylon is a bit thinner than I would like, but the ripstop weave looks like it should do the job, and they will be cool in summer, with enough room for a pair of silk long johns on chilly wet days. The zippers are at the length of Bermuda shorts, a good length for my chubby legs. Best of all, there are 6 REALLY NICE BIG pockets.I remembered seeing these pants on Amazon at a better price, so I came home and ordered a pair immediately. By selecting the color "tusk" I was able to save $20. The color is exactly as pictured on the website, and I'm so satisfied I ordered another pair.

First all of, for some context I stand 5'9 and weigh 145lbs meaning I'm "lean" but certainly not "rail thin, etc."I ordered these pants in a size 30/32 and they fit almost like they were custom made for my frame.I've read some reviews claiming these pants fit like "skinny jeans..". No, they will only fit like "skinny jeans" if you do not have a lean physique and or you're just over-weight.These pants were obviously designed for people who are active and physically fit for the most part. So when you read these reviews claiming they fit like "skinny jeans" just remember what I said.Others have claimed that these jeans don't leave enough room in the thigh area..Okay so I certainly don't have a large frame (I'm a distance runner with a distance runner build basically) but I don't have "chicken legs".My thighs measure 22.5 inch circumference and calves are 14 inches. Keeping in mind I'm 5'9 and 145lbs. My legs are a bit on the longer end as most people my height wear a 30 inch inseam compared to my 32.No I wouldn't exactly recommend these pants for doing squats but that's not what they were designed for. These pants allow for plenty of range of motion and are overall very comfortable and extremely light weight and breathable. So overall, these pants are of excellent quality and pretty much anybody with a lean physique should be more than happy with them. Please if you are on the bigger side of the spectrum don't waste your time. You'll just end up bitter and writing bad reviews on a product that doesn't actually warrant a bad review. You have to remember that pants or any other item of clothing isn't going to be necessarily "custom made" for your particular body type / state of physical condition. This doesn't mean the product is "bad" only that you need to continue on shopping for something that fits "you".

One word for the Columbia Silver Ridge Convertible Pants.....A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!I'm 26 years old. I was afraid I'd be judged and ridiculed by my peers for purchasing and overusing pants that turn into shorts. To be honest, I stopped listening to my friends after the first criticism because I was in paradise wearing these glorious pants. When I'm in these bad boys, I feel like I might as well just never take them off. Here's why:-The fabric feels like it was developed in the future and sent back to Columbia via time machine. There's no way you can make something SO comfortable with modern day textile factories. All kidding aside, I traveled 24 hours in planes in these pants and I can't think of anything better to wear.-Length and width were as advertised. The scary part of ordering clothes online are always the dimensions. You ask yourself "will I be getting another set of clown clothes?" Not in this case. Don't order too small in the waste, as the belt allows you tighten things up nicely.-Did I mention these turn into SHORTS?! I don't care if 40 year old men rock these all day, I'm right there with them. My friends were making fun of me until they started sweating their asses off in jeans. I simply zipped and ripped...bam I was wearing shorts!!! The zippers are very high quality, no snags and easy to reassemble (even though you look ridiculous if you put the shins back on while your wearing the shorts). All in all, these are great pants for walking long distances, traveling, and making everyone else look like an amateur. "Transform" your life and buy these bad boys. You won't give a crap what people say when your legs feel like they are resting in between sheets of pure joy.

These pants are light-weight and seem to breathe pretty well. I've only gone hiking in them a couple of times and so far no quality issues have been observed. I'm not sure if most of these "convertible" pants have this feature, but one nice thing is that on the detachable portion the zipper has a left/right tag on the zipper, so you don't accidentally try putting the wrong leg on shorts.I have two complaints (well, one is really just more of a personal preference):- The first is I would prefer a longer shorts section.- The second that, especially on longer hikes (or hikes in Hawaii anyway) conditions can change and you figure that's why you'd want convertible pants...Maybe you need long pants for a bit and then shorts. I went on a hike the other week that when I started it was early and tad chilly so I wore the long pants. By the time I got to the top it was hot, humid and there was no wind and I wanted to take off the bottom parts of the pants. There wasn't really a great spot to sit down and the pant legs were too narrow to take off without removing my hiking shoes (Merrell Moab Ventilator Mid). A couple other pairs of convertible pants I have have zippers that run up the side part way that allow you to remove them without removing your shoes.Maybe that's a dumb complaint, but it bugged me. If that won't bother you then hey, great pants!

I purchased a pair of these pants to hike in AZ. The desert climate is known to go from very cold to quite warm throughout the day and I thought convertible pants would be great. I have worn these on two occasions over approximately 13 miles of terrain varying from flat paths to climbing rocks and scrambling up hills. So far, they have performed extremely well. They seem durable and well made. There are a couple of points worth noting:1) I typically wear a 34x34 pant and that is what I ordered. Like some other reviewers, I find them a little snug in the hips and crotch, but the waist fits fine. They do come with a belt and have a bit of elastic in the sides,so I suspect one size larger would be fine and give a bit more wiggle room for those trails where you have to take large steps up to get over a rock or difficult terrain. These worked fine for me, but I could feel tension on the material in certain positions.2) These are VERY thin material. They are not much thicker than parachute material. This makes them great for AZ, but they are not going to provide much insulation in cold weather. But, hey, who needs convertible pants when it is really cold anyway?Overall, I am very satisfied with this product. I will likely order another pair one size larger to make sure I don't experience any embarrassing rips on rougher trails.

First, I like these, and, more importantly, so does my wife. that's really a big deal because she's pretty picky when it comes to my clothes. As has been said, these have plenty of roomy pockets, a belt, and they're mostly comfortable.what I don't like as much is that they do not stretch. So, when I sit,or take large steps up, they feel a little tight around my thighs and butt. they are not too tight when I'm just standing. I am a 32 and these leave me a little room around the waist. I have been using the belt with them. but, I wouldn't have wanted them any tighter because I think they would be more constricting around my thighs and butt if they were any tighter. I think that for my next pair of convertables,I'll try and find a pair that's a little more stretchy.this material feels a little thin, but not fragile. They are nice and cool with the legs on or off. They also wick away moisture.when I first put them on I went to work out. I left the legs on as i did some high energy stair stepping. I sweat quite a bit and, though they were wet with sweat, they dried within about fifteen minutes and i continued wearing them the rest of the night. I like them a lot, just wish they were a little stretchy in the legs.

I recently had the opportunity to begin walking to work with a recent move. I purchased these as a way to avoid walking the 50 min commute in jeans so that I could remain cool when I arrived to work (I live in a relatively warm area). These pants are excellent in terms of mobility and comfort. You will not be hot when walking long distances in them nor will you have chaffing from you legs rubbing together like you might in jeans.I also like these pants because they look like normal cargo pants and I can wear them in the office, the only give away that someone might not think these are normal pants is that they make a bit of noise when you walk in them which really isn't a big deal.I highly recommend these to anyone looking for pants that they can walk to work in,and then wear at work and not feel hot during their journey. One final comment, is that I usually fit perfectly in a 36W x 32L but these seem to run a bit on the smaller side and I purchased a 38W x 32L and these fit perfect. Based on my experience I'd recommend going a size up from what you're used to. Fortunately, Amazon has free returns on these so I got a new pair without any hassle!

Love these pants! They are officially my every-day pants. I used to wear jeans when I'm not at work, but after wearing these, it's hard to go back, and I rarely wear jeans anymore. I love everything about these pants:- Lightweight, comfortable, moves with you- Material is a good windbreak, so good when windy- They dry quickly when wet- Even though lightweight, they're not cold in winter, yet they're not hot in summer. I'd rate them cooler than jeans in summer and about the same warmth in winter (don't know how they do it!). Perfect in all temps!- Zip-off bottoms into shorts is great when needed!- Pretty durable. I've been on my knees and stretched them while squatting/kneeling and they haven't ripped, torn, or gotten holes. I doubt they're as durable as jeans, but I've been impressed how well they've held up overall.- Belt works great, snaps/unsnaps easily and is quickly adjustable.- Pockets are great and plenty of room to carry stuff.- Look great too!No question these will be my go-to pants for a long time to come. Bought another pair in a different color and will probably buy more.

I ordered these pants so I don't have to carry both pants and shorts on my backpacking trip around Europe to save weight. I usually wear a 32x32 I weight 195 lbs, and I have an athletic body type. I like to wear my pants loose, but not baggy; I guess you could say a normal college-aged person does. When I tried these pants on, my girlfriend immediately laughed, as they were quite tight in the front, and the rear. While it did make my rear look fantastic, I was not a fan of wearing cargo yoga pants. I am by no means fat; however, I am also by no means a person with overly muscular or large legs. I guess these pants would better suit someone who has a skinny body type. The pants were also very restrictive when trying to lift my legs in a manner similar to scaling a rock, and I knew I would rip them very quickly at the crotch. The length of the pants was very nice, and for that, I am sad to have to return them. The pants are very high quality, light weight, the zippers on both the pocket and the legs are nice, and I enjoyed the belt that came with it. I wish the pants fit me, as I liked them a lot.

Yes they run small but I knew that before purchasing from other comments/ reviews (thank you to those who provided that info). My only complaint is that there is no zipper at the bottom of the pant leg so you will have to take off your shoes if zippering off (most likely). That's the only thing I wish these had. I can give up that little zipper for the savings! They do compare to pants two or three times their price for the most part and since they were on sale it was a no brainer. Lightweight, very packable, fit well (after you find your magic size), nice features and good colors. Just enough pockets and they give you a secure zipper pocket when you are traveling and don't want to get pickpocketed. The leg is pretty much a straight leg fit so the hem width is a fairly standard size (perfect for me). If you don't have a zipper to open at your ankle, it just sucks to have a tapered ankle that you have to cut to give you some width. I bought three pairs so obviously they work for me.4 stars but would have been 5 if they had that zipper at the ankle!
