My prior convertible hiking pants have all been 100% cotton, under the assumption that when it warmed up, I could always just zip off the legs and not have to worry about sweating through them. However, I recently tried a pair of Outdoor Research's Ferrosi hiking pants (not convertible) and was thrilled by their performance in the heat--"Who needs convertibles, now?" I asked myself. Then, I saw the Ferrosi came in a convertible model, and figured they'd be worth a try given how well the full-length pants worked out.As a hiker and outdoor photographer, I need clothing to accommodate all sorts of climates and conditions. Convertible pants give an extra bit of flexibility in that you can remove the legs as the day warms up,making them easier to layer. Starting a hike in sub-freezing temperatures before dawn in Bryce Canyon only to have the mid-day heat reach the mid-to-upper 80s, in intense sun and strenuous activity for the hike, I like that option. These convertible Ferrosis are almost everything the full-length ones are: they're made of the same stretchy, breathable, ripstop nylon/lycra blend, and they fit just as well. The zippers on the legs don't add too much bulk or reduce flexibility of motion much, either, and they're subtly color coded so you don't have to worry about getting the legs on backwards. The cons: Some reviews say the pockets are too small. There's something to that, but IMHO, the issue is the placement; the pockets are straight-cut and located high and along the front of the pants. This is fine for helping distribute weight and contents when hiking, but it is a bit awkward to get used to, to pull your wallet out, etc. And I found the belt loop placement a bit odd (the loops themselves are awesome, mind you) when placing items like lens bags or water on my belt (as in heavier items shift forward if placed on the side, or else have to be placed so they are in the way if you sit). These are by and far minor issues, though, and are far outweighed by the pros.

Overall great outdoor pants. Very comfortable and durable. Good for tons of situations from the gym to lightweight backpacking or hiking, etc. Look nice enough you can get away with wearing around town or even in a casual office. Nice to be wearing shorts and pants and have the option to choose.I do notice a slight swishing noise which may be coming from the fabric over the zippers moving on the legs, and some from the fabric texture itself. This is minor, not the effect you get with rain, snow, or shell pants, but notably audible where jeans, etc. are 100 percent quiet (but not smart to wear when sweating or getting wet outdoors).Zippers seem to work well, but if there are left/right markings for the removable legs I have missed them and it would be a welcome addition to avoid closely staring at the zippers configuration.Flap over zippers inside the pant leg keeps them from rubbing on the leg, but the cloth should be much wider to make the seam less noticeable. After a few minutes you will not feel it anyway, but is a present feeling if you pay attention.Fit I found on the side of slightly too large. I wear 32W, 30L and the medium size was both too big on the waist and slightly too long. There is some give in the waistband but not full elastic - similar to stretch jeans. Going down one size dialed in waist and length perfectly.

Awesome hiking pants, they fit and feel great. They block the wind pretty well, and although they are not very water resistant some water rolls off. They weigh nothing I cant stress this enough they are -so- lightweight its really impressive, and feel more free than sweatpants. Probably the best pair of pants Ive ever purchased honestly. Dont expect them to look like designer pants, OR is terrible at designing clothing, although not as bad looking as colombia brand. They seem like excellent quality and are "guaranteed forever" which makes me love them even more. I had 0 issues with the zipper placement, they sit comfortably above my knee with average height/build.I left at 4 stars for the following wishlist, though they are far from dealbreakers given the pros of these pants, they would be much appreciated additions:-Waist tightening system-tapered leg bottoms w/ zipper-pockets large enough to fit my hands in-less jingly zipper pulls(not really that bad though)

I measured my waist before buying these and then went down two sizes before I found the right fit. By 'right' I mean that they aren't too tight on my waist, but I don't need a belt. These will feel a little baggy around your ankles if you are a modern dude who wears pants on the slimmer (dare I say skinny) side, but once you get the right waist size, the bagginess won't bother you too much and is probably a good thing for hiking pants.

Looked around a lot for just the right pants for my husband to live in all summer long - he does recreation with kids and likes having something that can dry quickly. He uses them as all purpose - hiking/ swimming/ climbing/ playing. Already after a month I can tell they are much higher quality than the columbia ones he had previously.

The main hip pockets are in a weird spot and too small for my hands. Other than that I really like these pants! The legs zip off to above my knee, which is preferred. I really like that the back pockets are zippered, too. Super lightweight and comfortable!

Super light weight with a perfect amount of stretch, which makes them great for anything from hiking to rock climbing. Definitely more suited for mild to warm conditions, so if you're looking for something to keep you warm, I'd look at other options.

Great Hiking pants. The lower leg is easy to remove for those hikes where it starts cool but warms up. I own 3 pairs. Just wish all the colors were available. Seems like in my size some of them sell out as soon as they become available.

great pants and super comfortable. They are extremely light weight and excellent for hiking, the seems for the pockets are coming undone and they are not very durable, which is why they don't qualify for five stars.

Lightest weight hiking pants I've ever worn. Way lighter than my 5.11 tac pants. The stretch is great too, they stay breezy and comfortable and easy to move around in.

Went out with the dog in foggy 35 degrees in long pants and three hours later it was sunny and 50 and the lower half of these pants were in my pocket. Perfect.

I wear these to work in a professional setting, for jogging in fall/winter, and for hiking. They do it all.

Nicely made and designed. High quality.I feel confident the pants will outlast me in my hiking.
