I forgot my hat on a recent climbing trip to Moab. The sun was ferocious, and fortunately a friend lent me his OR Sun Runner cap. As a testament to how much I liked the hat, I ordered an OR hat immediately after I returned. I didn't want the side panels of the Sun Runner cap (I always bring a bandana, and I unfold it and wear it under my hat if I really need to cover my ears and neck), so I ordered the Swift Sun Hat in fatigue. The hat is typical Outdoor Research quality, which is to say excellent. As with the hat I wore in Moab, I think it will be excellent as a sun hat. It is very light and has a very comfortable fit. The adjustment tab has a quick release buckle, which seems useless to me but is very low profile,so that's fine. I really like the 'fatigue' color, which is a nice olive, light enough to not absorb too much sunlight and without the slightly dumpy army-navy store color common to olive drab. It's casual enough looking to not look like I'm trying to golf at Mara-Lago and neat enough looking that I wore it in the rain to an engineering meeting without looking unprofessional. There is one kind of odd aspect to the hat: the mesh side panels are actually the sides of a complete mesh cap. The top of the mesh cap is hidden because the nylon top panel (the olive part, in my case) is actually a completely separate 'awning' secured at the front and the back of the brim. I think the purpose is to provide a bit more insulation and ventilation between the head and the sun. It makes the hat a tad heavier (it's still really light) and I suppose could theoretically catch on brush if you're thrutching through dense vegetation, but honestly I don't think the difference would be really noticeable. Either the Swift or Sun Runner seem to be good choices.Final analysis, I don't see much to criticize. It seems very practical for hot weather and sun, and probably fine in cool weather as well. It packs well and looks cool. It'll probably end up as my go-to hat for hiking, running, and activities in sunny and/or arid areas. Highly recommended.

I'm somewhat of a brand snob, Merrel, Patagonia, Marmot, Mountain Hardwear, etc. I've seen several of Outdoor Research's products in person and have been impressed, just haven't bought anything yet... until now.I'm fair skinned and keep my hair super short so I need constant sun protection for my dome. I have several hats from Columbia sun/boonie style hats to straw cowboy hats to baseball caps. Regular baseball type hats don't breathe or "give" when your head gets hot and swells. The same day I received this blue cap, I ordered another in Evergreen, yes I was that impressed with it. It fit and felt that nice. Blue for running and green for the trails. The OR Swift cap feels incredible on my fat head.Yes, fat head. I've seen larger skulls but mine is far from tiny. I feel this cap fits my head perfectly and after no time at all, I do forget it's on my head. It breathes extremely well (the two materials are different layers, you can run your hand all the way between the mesh and color nylon) and has just enough give or stretch without becoming loose to where I feel it may fall off. It feels very secure.Other reviews have mentioned the adjustment buckle possibly being a problem. I think because it's a different strap system than most caps, people become a little worried. The buckle is flat and pretty thin but I feel it's not going to fail.I know it sounds silly to be so excited about a hat but I am more than satisfied. Hmmm, which color to buy next???

I have purchased several of these hats in various colors. They fit well, are easily adjusted, the vented mesh is a major plus in hot tropical and / or desert environments. I bought my first one for a trip to hike through rainforests in Costa Rica. It holds up well through countless times through the washing machine (I recommend letting it air dry rather than running it through a dryer). My favorite version of this hat is gray, has made it through 6 trips to Costa Rica, two trips to the national parks in the Midwest, and being worn almost daily all summer in the mountains of western North Carolina where I live. It’s very thin, lightweight, UV resistant, color doesn’t fade, and folds up easily into a pocket, daypack, or book bag. Like many other outdoor research (OR) products I own, it’s made of high quality very durable materials and I have truly put it to the test in rainforests, deserts, beaches, mountains, cutting grass, remodeling my house, over many years and it looks just like it did when I first bought it years ago.

I probably should have reviewed this a long time ago, since it's been a year. BUT, you can't say I haven't thoroughly tried it out before submitting a review. This hat was bought for a September 2012 trip to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. It's light and airy enough that my head was comfortable even with the extra warm and dry conditions at the bottom. 4 days in and out of the canyon, a week at Disney World, a week in the Smokies, and countless golf trips later, this hat is my go-to hat for anything that doesn't really require covering my ears. You want a hat for hiking, running, golfing, goofing, vacationing, welding (well maybe not welding), anything. GET THIS HAT!Outdoor Research has hit it out of the park with this hat. While this review applies to the specific hat I purchased, the Swift comes in several colors that are available from various vendors here at Amazon. Search is your friend, go get it!

These Outdoor Research (OR) caps are designed with utility and comfort in mind. Designed with mesh side vents and a moderately long brim, these caps will keep your head cool and protected while shading your eyes. The mesh sides might not be useful for men with thinning hair or shaved sides because the mesh sides will allow sunlight to pass through and result in some sunburn. Offered in several colors, a cap can be chosen for different weather conditions. The darker colors are useful in rainy, overcast, and cool weather conditions, while I prefer the lighter colors for sunny summer days and warm weather conditions. I own several OR caps and select colors to match weather conditions and complement other clothing.Definitely washable without losing shape and size. Also see OR Helios Sun hats if you need more side and neck coverage when out-and-about in the field.

I'm a sweaty guy, particularly when I exercise. Sweat running into my eyes is bad enough, but when you mix in allegedly "sweat-proof" sunscreen the result is excruciating. I got this hat because I wanted some sun protection that didn't involve ocular torture. After some research I decided on this item. It fits just right (I have a smallish noggin so I had to crank the strap) and it doesn't overheat me as I originally feared. The best thing I've discovered is that the sweat from my runs is actually diverted along the brim of the hat so the result is now NO sweat streams into my eyes. Bonus!! I've logged 100+ miles with it under various conditions (hot, windy, calm, etc.) and have had no issues. The only cosmetic issue, and this is very minor, is that when you need to crank the size down there remains a goofy looking loop at the back of the hat.

I have many many hats. From visors, ball caps, cowboy hats and this is my favorite by far! I wish I found this hat years ago I would've saved myself some money. This hat can be worn to the gym, backpacking, hiking, around town, fishing, to your arraignment hearing! The hat uses a netting system around the top to breathe and keeps stuff out along with the fabric that stretches atop the crown that connects at the back. Genius design and I hope OR put a patent on that design because that is incredibly intuitive. This thing thrives in the heat - I have been on hour long runs and the top is dry (although this could be a negative if you want the sweat to cool you).Bottom line: go buy one. This thing washes well - I wear daily and throw in the wash a couple weeks and let it air dry. I will be buying more colors.

This hat is light and durable. It's basically a mesh cap with a separate free-floating layer of nylon in the middle-attached only at the ends so it breaths exceptionally well. It's perfect for outdoor activities in the heat when I need to protect my head from sun exposure but also need to keep cool. A simple dunk in dishwater is all that's needed for cleaning and it dries super fast-no metal parts just a plastic fastener for adjusting. I have yet to have it stain from sweat, even around the absorbent headband liner-which has been a problem with many other hats. It also fits really well and looks sharp. Got one for my brother and he has a larger head-seems to fit him fine as well. It's my go-to hat.Well worth the money. I have ordered extras for the future!

I searched and searched for a low profile running hat that had good reviews, was IN-stock, and wasn't too big! I'm not sure why that is so hard to find! After buying and returning a few from Patagonia, I tried this one. It does the job. It's big but not too big. (I guess i have a small head and I have fine hair, so no fluff. Hence, I need a small hat.) The clasp in the back does not stay tight. Every time I put on the hat I have to cinch it down again. B/c I can't get a super snug fit, it might not stay on in a windy day, but most days aren't that windy where I am. So I am happy. The sweat band also seems to do a fine job. It's definitely soaked after short runs.Haven't tried it in the summer or on long runs but seems sufficient.

I have had one of these hats before and loved it for summer wearing. The SPF rating of 50% was important as I have active melanoma and need to shield my head and face. Alas I lost it last fall. I bought two of these hats this year at two different times. This hat color is obvious. The other is navy on grey. I got them from two different vendors at two prices ten dollars apart. They clean up well in the washer on gentle. Problems: if your head is large, you will need to pull the end of the tape from the place it is tucked in the hat. Once you have adjusted your tape, you might have a length of tape that flaps in the wind and feels like flies are landing on your neck.Annoying but you should be able to secure it.

I really liked this hat for hot-weather hiking. It's very light weight and breathable. I noticed the moisture wicking band in the front of the hat did it's job quite well when we stopped and i decided to take-off my hat for a spell. The moisture was kept from running down my face noticeably. I recommend using the small hole on the back of the hat to tuck the extra strap (from the adjustment strap) if you have any. This dummy didn't discover it until the strap had been bugging me for several miles. Derp. - Seriously, though i like the hat if you're looking for something less hot than a typical ball cap but not wanting any of those extra's like the neck shield etc.

Overall, I am happy with this hat.The best thing about the hat is that, for me, it fits my head better than other hats. Most hats that I try on come down over my ears. This hat was small enough between the crown and the sides that it fit perfectly above my ears. I would definitely recommend it if you have this problem. The material is okay. I personally prefer a more durable material as I was wearing it outdoors mostly; the mesh on the side snags easily on branches or thorns. But, it was cool in the summer and protected my face from the sun.Overall, it's a good hat. Most of all, the reason why I like it so much is because it fits above my ears properly.

9.9.2016

The hat met my expectations for fit and coolness. I've got a 7-1/4" hat size and the adjustable strap enabled it to fit just fine. It is quite airy with mesh all around and exposed directly to air on the sides. I like the fabric strip across the top, as it is light enough to breath while also blocking sunlight. I run with it 3 times per week and use it during other outdoor activities and it has held up very well. The liner around the forehead and sides is soft and holds perspiration, so both comfortable and no sweat in your eyes. I would give it five stars if it was a little more airy and cool, but I'm not sure if any hat is better.

Another very well thought out and constructed product from OR.....mesh lines the whole dome with some wicking material at the forehead that is very comfortable and extremely breathable and some very high quality supple nylon for the separately sewn (ingenious!) dome and brim. Good design and stitching....the only small gripe is that there is quite a lot of extra webbing beyond the adjustment buckle and I have a 7 1/2 fitted cap size. Still the best domed hat I have ever owned for mountain running and backpacking. Lots of room in chilly weather for a earwarmer or beanie which will add to its usefulness for shoulder season outings.

I wear hats all year and and because I’m a little bald on top it’s important to me that my scalp doesn’t get sunburned. Although the Outdoor Research hat was more money, for me it is worth every penny. The hat is neutral color and the logo is muted so I don’t feel like a walking billboard. The material is quality including the adjustable strap to size it for my head. But best of all the hat is designed to let the heat escape and that was important to me. I would recommend this hat for all summer activities. I don’t mind paying a few more bucks for quality material and design. Now, if I can just not lose it, I’ll be all set!
