I've got back into the Lego habit in a big way over this past year or so, mainly with Star Wars Lego and also the awesome Saturn 5 build. I was therefore delighted to have the chance to try out this new Lego Hidden side Haunted Highschool set.These sets are going to be the perfect set for Halloween, they are based around classic American movie themes we see in the scary films.. high schools, school buses, graveyards, trains etc. They're made of fun transforming sets and also transforming characters. Alongside this there is an app that transforms the set when you view it using the app, bring it to life using AR. As of the time of this review I've not been able to get this app but I will be keeping it up to date as I get it.The set comes well packaged,in a great box with very fun artwork that really gets the spooky feel across. The set contains 9 bags of Lego including 7 new mini figures and a detailed handbook to help walk you through the build.I started this set Friday evening and liked it so much I finished it on Saturday. It was a very fun build of a lovely looking set. It's very much a vertical build, building up and fleshing it out as you go and it's really compelling. I have been doing it alone but can see this would be the prefect build to do alongside your kids if they are young enough (mine is an adult).I'm delighted with this set overall, it looks great, it contains lots of hidden parts that make for a lot of fun in using it once built and it's great fun to build. Add in the AR and this deserves to do really well.I've now had the opportunity to play with the Hidden Side app (released a few weeks after the pre-release sets) and found it to be an interesting AR experience. There are two modes, one where you play as a ghost in a fully virtual town and haunt the residents, the other (to me much more interesting) has you hunting ghosts. As a ghost hunter you need to scan in your fully built sets (using the camera in a well lit area) and you then play a series of mini games. You use the colour changers on these sets to find different types of "gloom" (ectoplasm, or slime I guess) and then after you've hunted enough you can various of your mini figures and a ghost will pop out. You then battle the ghost and victory allows you to buy upgrades and add to your app mini figure collection. I find the AR really interesting and can see this being a nice free addition to these sets that could keep kids playing for many weeks after they've built them (and could be great fun once the spooky season lands).Easy to recommend to fans of Lego , and spooky 80's teen movies (it really has that feel for me). It's also noticeable that the value is great, as it isn't supporting a license you get a lot of bricks for your money in this kit.

I got access to this early, which I hope is why I experienced quality control issues I’ve never experienced in a Lego set before - 6 separate incorrect or missing pieces. I had spares but hope this was a glitch in the early sets.That really is the only main downside. The final school is amazingly detailed with so many little jokes and winks towards things. You get the usual Lego cuteness - the canteen with muffins and hot dogs - but also a bit of an evil bent with the horror theme which is new and awesome. It’s sort of Scooby Doo meets Ghostbusters meets Harry Potter meets Lego. The hidden horrible secret of the school is also built up progressively and comes together very well at the end in a reasonably robust and playable set.There are 9 bags,a very detailed manual and around 50(!) stickers. Most are easy to apply but there are so many it’s a bit tedious. You get a good collection of mini figures some with ghost personas. This is clever but there is a risk of losing the second identities - and taking them apart isn’t the easiest. By far my two favourite characters aren’t even shown on the box. The skeleton is amazing and the ghost bear.... incredibly cute and scary all at once.Play wise there isn’t a lot of space in parts of the model but it’s still clever with most of the main play areas marked out with 2-stud pads. There are also all the opening and closing elements. It was a long winded build though with only a handful of complex sections. The age limit is about right for the build but younger kids can definitely play with it once built.The app released only in the last few days - and it’s very clever indeed. You HAVE to have finished the model to use it - you can’t use it before that. It still needs a bit of polish but even in the early release - July 2019 - it’s got a lot of features. It’s also very clever how it combines the model with augmented visuals. Though aimed at the phone, I think it looks better on the iPad - the graphics are easier to view. It’s clever exploring the model but once you get ghost hunting it can get a little repetitive and also quite scary. This bit may not be good for younger kids but it’ll depend on how they react to scenes of peril.A fantastic set with Excellent value for money for the pieces and complexity. It’s great even without the app, and then you get that on top as well. Loses a star for the quality control and a handful of very minor other niggles.Once of the most novel and enjoyable Lego sets I’ve made in years.

Lego always seems to be popular with kids of all ages and, although it is quite expensive to buy initially, it lasts very well offering a lot of fun for the price. This Newbury Haunted High School Construction Big Set is from the Lego “Hidden Side” range and is suggested for boys and girls aged 9 plus – although I guess this scary ghost set was designed primarily with boys in mind. This set adds a new dimension to Lego play and offers an Interactive Augmented Reality feature with a Lego Smartphone app to make the Hidden Side really come to life. The main theme is the haunted high school which comes with mini figures including Vloggers Jack and Parker, Elton Douglas, Rose Davids, head Mrs. Clarke,student Paola, Wade, and Jack's ghost dog Spencer - plus a good selection of Lego accessories. The school itself features a hidden chamber, a bus station at the front, a computer lab, a library, a bathroom, a chemistry room and a bell tower. This is a bit of a specialist Lego product, so is best selected for a child who is tech-savvy and creative, owning a Smartphone or Tablet – however, the Lego pieces supplied here are compatible with all other Lego sets and can be used (albeit less effectively) without the app. Currently around a hundred pounds from Amazon this Lego Haunted High School set is from a growing range of related Augmented Reality products by Lego and is well made and good fun for the right child. If you are happy to pay the price for genuine Lego then this Ghost play-set is worth five stars for the quality and the clever idea and it should last for many happy hours of play.

Don't be put off by the pack art, this is a really incredible build. Unfortunately, the pack art on the Hidden Side series really does not draw you in and make you want to build it. They all look identical with a heavy reliance on the ghost hunting aspect of the A.R. App. This definitely does the sets a real disservice as you can't really see what you would be getting for your money and trust me, this kits are great value. You don't need the app to get a lot of playability from them and if you are building for display these really have something special.Some fun building techniques in this particular large build. The mechanism for the claws is fun to construct and works well.Even better the eyes work via the clock in the centre of the wall. Definitely some nice little touches there. Once you turn the set aorund you have a full playset style school to play around in. Chock full of little details but the best has to be the swinging blackboard with the ghostly teddy bear. With a host of mini figures included there is plenty to sink your teeth into.I could be on my own here but I prefer the non-spooky option. For once I didn't make any of my characters in to the possessed version as the school building just looks better to me without the monster on display.Number Of Pieces: 1474Approximate Price Per Piece: £0.07Build Time: 4.25 Hours

This is a large set featuring very nearly 1500 pieces. The recommended age is 9+ - I think there will be some younger lego enthusiasts who could build much of this but I think that is about right in terms of the recommended age. Even so, mum and dads (or uncles or aunties) can expect to need to get involved - what a shame! As ever, the instructions are easy to follow and come in numbered bags. This is a big build though and shouldn't be underestimated. Over the course of the build you can see how the design works and as ever it is a very rewarding set to complete.This set, however, includes 'AR' or augmented reality elements. The first time I have seen such on a lego set.It is an interesting development and whilst I will always prefer people to use their own imagination with lego, this is a way of encouraging that further, rather than quelling it.You need to download an app to be able to activate the AR you get elements of the set that 'come to life'. I won't spoil this but it is a nice touch and my children have enjoyed it. Nevertheless, I wouldn't have missed it. The set itself is reward enough and is a large, imposing building once completed. Another triumph for lego!!

This is a big build, and Lego is always fun to put together, as it's better made than the cheap imitations available.Our son has been a fan of Lego since very young, going through phases of Lego City, Lego Star Wars, Lego Jurassic World and the various video games linked to these product lines.He is less enthused by the Hidden Side concept as he hasn't any previous history with the characters. With Lego City he enjoyed the mini movies, with the only dialog being 'Hey' said in a dozen different ways! Though I believe there are now comic strips covering the Hidden Side world, he is at the age of ten, less interested by the world presented.He did like the way in which the buildings change to reveal their spooky sides,but as yet we've not been able to interest him in using the app to catch ghosts. Actually I'm glad because I think the app would end up clogging my diminishing phone storage.To summarise, it's quality, but the hours spent assembling it haven't as yet led to many more hours of fun playing with it. Maybe our son will come round to it again soon. If not, we are claiming our dining table back! (Did I say the build is quite big?}

I was slightly sceptical at first with the hidden side line, however my son (7) saw this set online and put it on his Christmas list. I felt it was reasonably priced and I expected a fairly simple, steady build... how wrong I was! This set is so challenging, I have many modular sets, ninjago city/docks and it definitely competes in the same league.We had so much fun building this, the hidden extras of the school transforming into a monster are fantastic, the designer/s are super clever to come up with these features. There’s no ‘empty’ areas, it looks great normal and transformed...In my own opinion I can honestly say this is one of my favourite sets of all time. That was just the build,the app is also brilliant. We haven’t played on the app very much as we prefer using our own imagination but it’s a feature which I can imagine will advance in the near future.Overall 10/10, I’ve since bought 4 other hidden side sets which I will review separately but if you are sceptical then be reassured that you will not be disappointed in Newbury high school

This set might look like the perfect centerpiece birthday present for kids, but at 1474 individual pieces your kid will either need to have a lot of patience or the grown-ups will have to pitch in. It took me about 4 hours to grind through this, time I should have spend doing housework. It's part of Lego's new "Hidden Side" theme in which you can use an augmented reality app to view it in a new way, in this case a spooky way.Even without this feature the haunted high school is wonderfully detailed and fits absolutely perfectly with the Ghostbusters theme from a few years ago. I will assume that since Lego lost the Ghostbusters licence they decided to create their own ghost sets with the new "Town of Newbury" line.Build this up and integrate into your city world and it would fits perfectly to have the Ecto-1 pulling up outside. With four other in the Newbury line due out soon, including an amazing

We are a huge Lego lovers household but missed out on the older Monster Fighters range when it came out and so have been over the moon that they have released this Hidden Side range. The only thing we are disappointed about is that we cannot access the Hidden Side app on any of the devices in our home at present and so hope to get a device in the near future to try this out as my Children are really excited by the figures and to go 'ghost hunting'. If the main purpose of these sets for you is to use the app alongside then I would suggest checking if your device is compatible but as a standard Lego set they are brilliant in their own right too.This is the largest of the Hidden Side sets so farand our favourite - if you are going to purchase one set then this has to be the one closely followed by the slightly smaller

WOW. thats what you think when youve built this set, its so big ( so make sure you have room for display or play ) Its a big set for the money and well worth every penny for sure. it will take even a well trained lego fan a serious amount of time to make this set which it did us as there is so much to build and such a big instruction manual ( one of the biggest we have ever had).The set is colourful, engaging, interesting to play with a nice to have something a little spooky rather than cute or cars etc as this one can really be played with.download the ap for the augmented reality and youll be amazed at how alive it becomes, i wont spoil it by tell you what you see but its such fun to play with lego that feels alive.loads of bricks,loads of mini figures and loads of play time with this set. its a bargain.

So carefully unpacking each section and following the easy instructions has been a good lesson in concentration and organisational skills as well as patience. This hidden side set is the most complex, interesting and rewarding of builds we have seen. The way the project slowly comes together is intriguing, looking at it with either way makes it full of interest.We haven't yet downloaded the app but can see how it will eventually lead to further enjoyment and play value. I am only required to praise each stage of the building, not to actually do any, so it has been a special way of spending time away from screens this summer.

I bought this in the black Friday sale and got it for £61.99. I had been eyeing it up for my son's Christmas but it's RRP was a little steep so naturally I jumped on the offer when it came up, especially because with hidden side, you really need all the sets in order to fully unlock content on the app (a thing to bear in mind if you are intrigued by the concept of AR Lego and are yet to try it out). The set took about 4.5 hours to build. Pieces come in 9 bags and consist of 430 steps. Looks brilliant when built up. The app is super fun too, we will continue to build up our hidden side collection

A fantastic product but struggling a bit with the app. My 6 year old grandson did most of it himself and there were one of two issues with the fixings which were not always easy to clip together. However he loved it. I would question the pricing as some of the reviews mention this. I am absolutely certain that when I ordered it the price was £77 something. However the invoice in the box said £97. If this is the case, I am shocked. I wonder if the price went up due to the increase in demand during the Coronavirus problem. Perhaps someone is in a position to answer

This set is awesome. Totally different from other sets. Love how it transforms from regular school to spooky one full of hidden surprises. My 9 year old spent several hours building this with minimal support, Only asking for help on the mechanical bits and some of the fiddly bits. Clear simple instructions to follow. The interactive app works alongside the set creating a whole new play dynamic and opportunities. Hours of fun. Highly recommend, look forward to purchasing more from this series.

Excellent product (as are all the Hidden Side sets) - but make sure that your tablet / phone is compatible with the Lego Hidden Side app first as it uses AR Core which many devices are incompatible with...If you can use the app then this set is brilliant! It is well designed, nicely detailed and the kids have loads of fun building it and playing with it. The added functionality of the app entertains them for ages and can be used in a multiplayer mode with friends who have Hidden Side sets
