This is a review of set 70427, also known as 'Welcome To The Hidden Side' or the 'Tree' (in the app).I'm a lifelong Lego fan, and I've been fascinated by the new 'Hidden Side' range of kits.ContentsThe kit is fairly simple to build - the contents are split between two large plastic bags and accompanied by an instruction booklet and a sticker sheet (of four stickers) - and it took less than 30 minutes. Aside from the construction bricks, the set includes four minifigs (1 Hidden Side protagonist, Jack Davids, and three ghosts, one of whom is a lumberjack), two black spiders and a black bat. The set comes with some interesting pieces for your own creations, in particular the 'mobile phone'1x2 printed tile, the 'fur lined' lumberjack's hat, the baseball-cap-hoodie, the printed torsos, and the translucent purple cone pieces.Form and PlayabilityThe build is a large, haunted tree, with an archway in the trunk, and two side extensions with claw-like roots, a lamp post and a colour wheel on the opposite side, which is used within the augmented reality app. The tree includes a tilting 'trap' that ghoulishly deposits the spiders and bat onto the head of an unsuspecting minifig standing below, with a simple push on the back edge - which is nice to feature, and means play doesn't just rely on the app.The Hidden Side AppSpeaking of the app, it's all good fun: it's quick to download and the user interface is nicely designed. You can choose whether you want to play as a 'ghost hunter' or as a 'ghost', and then choose the Lego set from the map (in this case, 'Tree'). The next step is to line up the set with the outline shown on the screen of your device, and what happens next is magical; on screen, the area surrounding the set is filled in with extra details and creepy-crawlies run across and around the set. Playing as the ghost hunter, the app instructs you to correctly position the colour wheel and you need to locate the 'haunted' patch around the set; a ghost will then appear and you have to tap correctly on it until it is vanquished. This step is repeated for different colours until you have 'cleared' the site. It's quite fun to do - and a new development with this second series of Hidden Side sets is that you can now play against other players - although I'm not sure how long-lasting the amusement is; luckily, as it's Lego, the original build can be remade into whatever else can be imagined!AestheticThe colours of the set are predominantly black and light turquoise blue: I initially thought this was a peculiar choice, rather than making the 'tree' in browns and greens, but once I noticed the character of Jack Davids also has a turquoise/blue/black colour theme (even his face is pale blue), I realised that the colour choices imply this is in a twilight or night setting. I don't think I've seen Lego sets using colour to imply a nighttime theme, so it's certainly interesting, yet I find it somewhat reduces the play options for the set - as you cannot really reimagine the tree as part of a knight's forest, or in an orchard for apple-picking - however it is cool to get foliage pieces in an unusual colour. I'm a little disappointed with the inclusion of the stickers; generally, I favour printed tiles, as stickered tiles just end up collecting dust around the edges and looking a bit grim, however a couple of the stickers are applied to curved surfaces, which I can forgive as I imagine printing the curved surface might be more complicated.SummaryThis set includes some really nice 'special' pieces, and the theming is really fascinating, with the colour choices to create a 'night time' scene. Lego always invest a great deal of time and thought into the design of their sets, and possibly even more so when working on completely new ideas such as 'Hidden Side'. For me, the app is a nice novelty and will certainly add play value for many; however I would recommend considering the play value of the set without the app and basing your decision on that.

It’s funny when you think how toys have evolved from largely inanimate objects through to interactive, and increasingly even beginning to introduce AI! This, being Lego, is rather different to how I remember it as a kid.The concept of this is excellent, and effectively takes on 2 stages. Initially, there is the build – all quite straightforward, following the nice clear, and large instruction booklet. It’s not some large monster construction like Lego of old, so shouldn’t take too long.Once it is built, simply download the app and away you go – the beauty is that others can too, or you can simply play singly. Th app is quick and easy to download, on both IOS and Android, BUT and this is a big but…..be aware, ensure you have plenty of storage on your mobile device, this is a whopping 840Mb!! This obviously means it is a fully featured interactive app, and it is.The concept takes just a little getting your head round, but is lots of fun once you have done so, with the choice of being a ghost, or ghost hunter, with lots of scenarios, outcomes and variations, so won’t become boring after one or two plays. All in all, a good value, real fun interactive lego kit / AR game set-up, the app being excellent (and free), but does (as noted) require plenty of storage on your child’s device.

This Lego game is built first and then the app is downloaded. It took about an hour to build by an 11 year old boy, Marcus, who was following the step by step instructions. It then brings the constructions to life and the app gives you the instructions and tells you where to place the figures and what you need to do.It is an interactive action game where you have to find the ghosts by moving round the construction with the phone and then destroy them, and you work towards challenges to get points. You can also play battles and attack the Lego figures, who are the monsters. It was great fun, first to build the lego and then lots of fun playing the game.It is absolutely great for lego builders and interactive players.Marcus loves it, and his mother's opinion was that she thinks "the game was more for boys as they like that kind of things as it is quite scary and there is eerie music and sound effects." However, I think lots of girls like those too and they would love the game. There is also a very private letter attached from the Lego group to any buyer telling people what it is and what to do. I have not seen a game like this before and think it should be a big hit with children. A definite 5*.

This is the first Lego set that we have tried which is interactive through use of an associated app. It’s a fairly simple set to build and although it looks good when it is finished the main attraction appears to be the interactive game rather than playing with the Lego itself. The app is easy to set up and use but you do need to have plenty of available memory space for the installation; that proved to be an issue with one of the devices we tried. We think that without the app this set would have limited appeal, and suggest that anyone buying this set a gift ensures that the recipient will also be able to use the app on a smartphone or tablet.

Easy to build set that looks good in AR on the app. Atmosphere is suitably spooky thanks to good audio and good animations. The solo mission (can be multiplayer) has you searching the AR set for gloom (three types chosen by the colour wheel on the actual set) which may reveal objects or ghosts. When you find a ghost you can shoot it to capture it (some are very tough: like the boss). You can place minifigs on the set at certain points to capture specific ghosts. There's a multiplayer mode (not AR) where you play as a ghost and haunt sets too.

This is a good value set for builders because it provides some pieces in interesting new colours and the printing on the characters is unique. The overall build looks impressive, but there is not much play value on its own unless you use the AR App. There is a flicker so you can rain down the spiders from their hidey hole above the subway entrance. The Hidden Side AR does look cool, but it is not our kind of entertainment. For the parts alone I see this set as good value, so with everything else it must deserve full marks.

The set arrived, my Son who is competent with building Lego took 40 minutes to build it. The instructions were easy to follow and the set looks great. The arrangement of mini-figures is a good selection as it contains one of the main characters of the series. It has a good range of detail and features that most children would like. Disappointing that the App is unavailable to download on our Samsung/Apple phones, so as yet we've been unable to play with it to the full extent.

My Daughter (age 11) enjoyed building this and it took her about 1 hour.Instructions are clear and easy to follow and she enjoyed tipping out the spiders and bat.Once it was built and played with for a while we downloaded the App (make sure your device is compatible). Once downloaded it asked us to scan the model which then took us into Lego Hidden side game world for even more fun. I do like this Lego as it is not just building the fun continues after to.

I've mixed feelings about this. One of the reasons I love my 8 year old playing with lego is that it keeps him away from a screen for a bit. Lego is a proper toy and helps with so many skills for later in life. So it's kind of sad to add the technology and get them back in front of a screen. That said, the way they have done it is very cool and does keep the wee fella very entertained. Works well on my google pixel 4 xl.

the interactive elements work really well and linked seamlessly into the Lego itself which the 7 year old loved. The set itself could be more interesting to play without the App. Do watch out as the App didn't work on the child's own tablet so had to use on a parents phone to avoid a disappointed child.

My kids absolutely love Lego so I knew they were going to love this item but it makes it so much more fun my kids are usually glued to there iPads to this breaks them away from them and gets them engaged with building but still allows them to use there tablets to join in the fun my kids loved it

A nice little starter set for Lego Hidden Side. My 9 year old daughter enjoyed building this. It is not the biggest of sets and only took an hour for her to build but she has enjoyed playing with since and the mobile App. We would highly recommend this set.

My 11 year old daughter put this together and it took about an hour and a half. She loved assembling this and was interested in the app to see ghosts with it. I definitely recommend this for children over 8 and can’t wait to collect the rest of the series.

The Set is very exciting for the price point you receive 4 Minifigures which 3 are Really Cool Ghosts. The Main Character is Blue which is nice to see. Looking forward to seeing more Hidden Side Releases.

This Hidden Side set is part of a range of Lego that as well as building, and coming up with your own stories, can be brought to life using the free to download app. What's not to like?
