I’m a Lego parent that has witnessed greater than 50 sets coming into our household since my last set, the old Millennium Falcon maybe ten plus years ago. I was becoming a little jealous of how much fun my kids were having so wanted a piece of the action. I was drawn to the Technic (never owned or built before) and in particular the Land Rover Defender primarily to experience something challenging (I suppose I’m a novice to intermediate builder) but also loved the overall design. The reviews and apparent value considering the piece count sealed the deal. I was super excited when it arrived and really wanted to take my time and enjoy the build experience. I really hit the jackpot with this set.The packaging and presentation was sublime. Instruction book and the number of bags (bags within bags) were a little over-whelming but again this was the challenge I wanted. It took me 7 days spread out with an hour on weekdays after work in the evenings and 4/5 hours on each of the weekend days. I honestly enjoyed every minute of the build and even caught myself smiling on numerous occasions where I sat back and reflected on what a great decision it was to invest in this set. Seeing every element come together was excellent. When it was completed I was like my kids calling every family member in to look at my creation to show off all the features, gears and engine. Everything was smooth and working well with one exception; the pistons of the engine were not working. I know some other reviewers were frustrated after such investment of time but I was actually delighted as it gave me a new project to root cause the error. After twisting and turning the vehicle upside and down trying all the different cogs, reviewing videos and learning a lot more about the build, I was systematically able to root cause the issue all the way back to step 11 (out of 800+ steps), wow, right at the start of the build – which makes perfect sense… I was so rusty and eye sight not what it used to be! Perhaps lucky (although I didn’t mind ‘starting over’) I was able to remove ca. 20 pieces and get to the fault and rectify. Oh the joy when I saw those pistons go up and down and all my efforts being paid off. Pros:+ Challenging+ Time to Build+ Design & Appearance+ Engine & Gears+ Features Cons:None. Thank you Lego, I can’t emphasise how much I enjoyed this and really well done to all involved in this design.

This is my first review writing on a product and also my very first Technic I have build. I must say this was quite enjoyable build to relax the tension I am having especially due to pandemic the world is facing at the moment. However, I do want to stress the fact I had one snag when building this truck. I didn't had one packet that was numbered "4". It turns out I didn't lost one, but rather got the double of another one that was marked numbered "4'. That explains why I have so many extra pieces in the end. Nevertheless, I did contact Customer Service and I am very grateful they helped me out twice to get the right pieces. As for the build, well like I said before, was incredible. The only issue I am upset, is that I can't operate the "winch". Seems like I jammed a couple pieces somewhere and most probably I have to break it apart to see the problem. I didn't care about all the switches or the inability to motorize the toy. I was excited to build from scratch and not losing a ton of pieces in the process. However, I do wish the instructions can be a bit clearer. I'm not sure is it just Lego or is it a Lego Technic thing, but I did noticed when building a Creator Mustang Set, there is a red circle visible on the pieces showing where to place on the build. That feature was very useful and made the build much quicker. On the Technic, it seems it bit harder because some pieces blend in with the page number and made it extremely difficult. Again, this is just my opinion and observations.Overall, I did enjoy building this. It not only thrilled just me but also my family by surprising them my patience and dedication to pull this off. I had so many problems to face but were fun to tackle. The only issue I stressed was the packet problem. Other than that, I am very satisfied and thrilled I build a truck (probably my first and last) and hopefully Lego can have Jeep version of this. It has the right build and structure and probably might be even better than this the Defender.[Sorry, for the long review, hopefully I won't get in trouble for this. :)]

I have a bunch of Technic Lego sets, everything from quite small to some 2,000+ pieces sets. Each new generation of Technic seems to improve. This is the best set I have in terms of build, features and aesthetics. It comes with a single instruction booklet but its a big one with almost 1,000 steps but the steps are broken down really nicely with some pages being just a couple of parts. The 15 odd bags of parts are also broken down into 4 major steps so that you don't have to open everything at once. They've also mixed up the build so that you don't end up building the same thing twice straight after each other, which is a pet hate of mine. There are a lot of features in this but highlights are; GREAT suspension, winch, all doors opening, great interior detail and the EPIC gearbox. The gearbox is both a highlight and a lowlight. On the one side it makes for a very challenging and mechanically interesting build, but at the same time its quite hard to push the model around the floor and really see what the gearbox is doing.....to really test it, you end up flipping it on its side and spinning the wheels by hand to watch what is going on. It's a very well designed model with no corners cut and ends up being a very sturdy model that you could happily give to an older child to play with, without too much worry about it getting broken. In my case, its now sat on a display shelf and looks superb (alongside the Ducati Corse motorbike, which is another fantastic looking model). In fact, the body is so well put together that at first glance it looks more like a plastic model than a piece of Lego. I didn't rush my build and I think I got a good 10 hours of fun build time, which is a good amount.Totally recommended.

I don't know where to start with this review, because there's so many great details included in this model. The front end looks quite accurate and faithful to the real car. The bonnet opens to reveal a really detailed engine bay. The winch here works smoothly, as does the I6 engine. The doors open, though they sometimes catch on the sills, the interior is nice with seats, gearbox selectors, steering wheel and dash, and I like being able to lift the rear seats to see the gearbox. All four wheels have independent suspension, and there is a surprising amount of travel. The locking mechanism is smooth for the rear door, and the whole rear end is very accurate and faithful to the original car.I like that the roof rack can be removed, but I think the car looks much better with it on. The HoG steering is smooth, the ladder can be folded down, and the boxes on the side and topcan be opened. (I used the box on the top to store the spare pieces.)My only criticisms of the set: I think sand green might have been more accurate, but I imagine there aren't many technic pieces in that colour so it wouldn't be cost effective; and some of the stickers were getting caught on the edges of the sheet, so they were ripping or peeling in different directions. I managed to salvage most of them, but there are a few areas where the white backing on the stickers peeled from under the print, so they are transparent and inconsistent. I imagine this has been fixed by now, and it's not too bad. Overall, this set looks amazing on display, functions well and was well worth the money.

First off I see a ton of reviews saying this is too hard, lol it’s a technic and it’s suppose to be harder. Also for those who are sad they can’t see the trans/ gears etc. well you can’t see them on your real car either. This set is nice it’s harder than the bugatti/Porsche etc. and finally a set that makes one think and use their mind. Hint make sure items work before moving on. If you mess up, oh well, that’s the beauty of legos they come together and come apart. Who ever builds a set just once! Nobody gets better if sets are easy. So Lego let’s make one even harder. Challenge my mind even more. It’s disturbing to me, (everyone has their rights to opinions),but it gets so old when I hate this set because I can’t see all the hard work inside. Umm yeah no kidding. Look at a real bugatti or Land Rover, umm do you see any of the gears pistons etc. no! Technic is suppose to be about the real thing. I guess since I work as a mechanic I’m different. I love how they do this. The one thing is if I do make a mistake it’s Lego and it comes apart. Real cars good chance you will ruin the motor or tranny. For what it’s worth Lego let make some even harder now, push the limits. Develop night mare sets like auto engineers develop cars for mechanics. I also see complaints that the gears make noise etc, umm yeah. These are not laser cut metal gears. There are no ball bearings. It’s plastic on plastic that doesn’t exactly rotate just perfect, come on. I do have one complaint for Lego, Stop using stickers for crying out load on your higher end flag ships.

I'd never been into technic Lego before but after enjoying building the small corvette I thought I'd try one of the larger sets. The Bugatti and Lamborghini are a bit pricey so I settled on the defender due to a high part count and lower price. The defender also looks the most coherent of all the technic cars. It's a highly enjoyable build, relatively straightforward but suitably challenging in places and it's easy to make mistakes if you aren't concentrating. I appear to have one small part missing but I may have accidentally used this elsewhere in the build. Fortunately I managed to scavenge a similar part from the corvette. I'm currently at the stage of finishing off the roof racks and at this point it's taken about 18 hours. It can be done a lot quicker but it's way more enjoyable to take your time and watch it all take shape. Approaching it methodically will also ensure that the drive train has none of the issues reported in some other reviews. The wheels are one of the last things to go on, however I would recommend attaching them at the end of stage 2 so you can check the gearboxes are functioning correctly as gaining access after the body panels are attached would involve a major strip down. Sadly I'm near the end now but I've learned there is an optional stadium truck build for it so may try that in future. I'm also looking at getting the Lamborghini, just got to figure out how to finance it.

I received this as a gift, and being a technician for Land Rover I was overjoyed to see how it “stacked” up to the real thing. Having never really built Technic I found this to be challenging but very fun and couldn’t stop turning the pages to see what was coming next. As most others are saying the gearbox is tricky and complex, and much like real transmissions, attention must be given to all steps to avoid miss placing gears. I ended up rebuilding mine 3 times and still believe I made a few mistakes. The attention to detail with the gear selector, hi/lo range selector and forward/reverse was another high point for me and watching everything sync up with the transmission down to the driveline and up to the engine was pure joy.One problem I encountered was the winch, I have big hands and once the winch is installed I cannot retie the string where it sits just behind the bumper without having to dissemble just about everything on the front end. (So make sure it’s tight!) Overall I thoroughly enjoyed building this and have found myself wanting more technic sets. Coming from working on Rovers, this was a nice break from the fixing and rebuilding part of my everyday life. For my own sake, I’m really hoping Land Rover takes a “piece” from the Lego assembly line and the Defender comes out with minor problems!

This was my second Lego build in over 40 years, (I’m 51) and my first ever Technic build.I really enjoyed it! It was so cool to be able to build the transmission, pinion gears and engine! It was really challenging and I found myself double checking the instructions repeatedly to make sure I was doing it correctly, so it took some time, but I didn’t mind that at all.I was impressed with how the chassis fit together even though you are building them in separate sections.I was missing two pieces, one I was able to get creative with some leftover pieces from other bags in the set (at first it was a bit of a surprise, but part of the fun is getting creative to solve problems that come up while building),the second piece was for the folding ladder on the side of the truck which I ordered and am waiting for it to arrive. It wasn’t critical to finishing the build, so it was not a big deal.I really enjoyed it and the finished product is hefty and massive beast to look at! It’s awesome!I’ve been continuing to tell all anyone who’ll listen how much fun this is and I bought one of my Managers the Volvo Dump Truck as a bonus for hitting his target last month and he is pumped!I’ve going to build the Mario Brothers Nintendo Game Console and TV next! Can’t wait to see how that one turns out!

It is a significant challenge to build right. 11 years age rating is a joke, if 11 year old has patience and attention to finish it, such that it even functions in the end, he or she surely must succeed later in their life. There's a lot of gears that are very easy to get wrong + one typo in the older version of the instruction (google it). As a model it looks cool and very well detailed, but to me the transmission was a massive let down. It's very complex, taking 2/3 of car interior, having half a hundred gears (maybe more) and dozen axles, but in the end they do almost nothing. The engine pistons are moving slightly slower or faster, which is really hard to notice and that's the only effect it has. What's worse, because of so many gears the inertia of motion propagation is very significant, the car has to roll for a 2-3 feet before engine reacts, and then if you reverse it's 2-3 feet again before it moves. It kind of breaks the illusion. I honestly think LEGO overdid this part a bit, there's only so much complexity you can cram in with plastic gears and still have them to work well.Anyway, I actually had lots of fun building it and it looks great once finished. Probably is fun to play with too, but I'm a bit too old for that :(

Nothing to say about this awesome set. Other reviewers almost said everything, 5 stars. I know Lego is producing some pieces from vegetables and uses packing from recycled paper and so on. But, why 500 pages of building instructions? You (Lego) could save a lot of paper keeping shorter the building instructions (and thus, money from printing and shipping). I cannot even imagine how many pages for set 42100, I'll discover it very soon. By the way, a lot of steps have just 2 pieces to insert, and some following steps to those have 2 other pieces to insert in a completely different position (just an example, step 245 and 246 can be merged and many others). I remember when I was 7,Technic sets like 8868 had very few pages of instructions for both model A and B. Each step had a long list of parts, not just one or two. Maybe this way makes the building experience easier, but I think a more difficult building experience could be even more funny, long and interactive: you spend more time to read and understand what's going on in the current step. Maybe, a longer version can be provided only on-line, just an idea. Anyway, if I complain about building instructions it means all the rest is awesome enough :) Happy building to everyone!!

I've build a few technic, and expert sets, Got this set for Xmas, finally got around to building it, did it over two days, took about 15 hours in all. This is a very nice build, loved it. The car when finished is quite big, opening doors, working engine, working gears, working steering, opening rear door, spare wheel, roof rack, roof ladder (folding), two luggage boxes, one on roof, one on side, both opening, internal controls for hi and low gear, drive, neutral and reverse, even adjustable door mirrors and internal rear view mirror, also comes with stickers. The only down side for me was that there were about four pieces missing, but not crucial,as there were a few extra pieces and I managed to improvise and use some of the extra pieces to finish the build. Also the car did move, rolling wheels, etc and the gears worked, etc, and everything moves freely initially, but, as the build comes together, and as the whole car frame is strengthened and tightened it seems to also tighten the gears as well, so once fully built the gears etc seemed a tad tight and a bit stiff? All in all though this is a very impressive build. Well done Lego for getting such an Iconic car done so well. Recommended.

We did the set together with my 7y old son. It's one of the most complicated set I have made so far. It takes time and it is hard but as long as you follow instructions carefully there is no major trouble. The gearbox is amazing and it is the highlight of the set. Unfortunately I don't think it is possible not to have it cracking in 3rd / 4th gear. The torque applied to some of the pieces is just too strong. It's running smoothly for other gears. Design could have been simplified a little to avoid this.We made small changes to make it sort of a convertible. Not Land Rover approved but a great way to see better the inside. As many, I am not a fan of stickers, one or two Land Rover printed pieces would have been great. Two quick suggestions :- it would be great to show in the instructions where to fit the motors if we want to.- For this type of model Novice / Advanced builder mode in the instructions would be great. Being able to split tasks between two builders based on their skills and have independent part being built before getting assembled. A great way to get young Lego enthusiasts directly involved in this type of build.

I ummed and ahhed about spending this much on a Lego set, but when I finally took the plunge, I had a great time building this, despite the fact that there were a couple of pieces missing. Didn't think I could downgrade it a whole star though as the parts were sent reasonably quickly, even the piece that was out of stock. I'd be lying if I said it didn't spoil the build a little, since after the first missing part, I was constantly expecting more, but in terms of the wait, I'd never planned on building it quickly anyway, There was an issue with the driveshafts on the build but according to the interweb, you simply have to make sure you properly align the centres of the 2 universal joints and then you're all good.To be fair the instructions show it being built this way but you have to be fairly eagle eyed to spot it. Finished, it hangs together really well. I chose the set partly because I'm interested in the new Defender but also the shape lends itself well to being made out of bricks.Overall, it looks great on the shelf, once it's done. Though I'm considering tearing it down and building it again just for the fun of it.

It's been a few years since I posted a Technic review but I have had one issue with what was almost the perfect Technic set.The set is crammed with functionality and detail, dozens of gears and complex linkages which make the build incredibly rewarding for all ages and when you're finished, you have a superb model - the Lego designers certainly earned their titles. The drawback I experienced however is that the drivetrain is very complicated and, despite being meticulous with my assembly, somthing deep inside the set hasn't gone to plan. As such, my build doesn't perform as im sure Lego intended. Please don't let this put you off though indeed, pay attention to the instructions,trial-fit gears and shafts and if like me you enjoy solving problems, then you may get the additional enjoyment of trying to find the solution (judging by a number of other reviews, not everyone has experienced this issue) I'm going to have another go and perhaps take the opportunity to fit a V8 under the bonnet in the process - but not immediately as my wife has asked if she can have the kitchen table back!Good effort Lego Technic Team

I bought this as a "challenging project" to build with my autistic son, who adores Lego because of the sequence of build, and visible result. His is meticulous in following instructions and stops completely if a piece is missing or in the wrong place. I was a little concerned that once we started this we wouldn't get a break until it was done so although I purchased it at Xmas 2019 we have only done it during the UK Covid-19 lockdown. Having said that, as it was broken down into 4 build segments we did stop after each one, spending "roughly" 4 hours on each (although actually more on the engine and transmission). Unusually for Lego we did have some (4) missing parts, but luckily I have spares from other kits that would do to keep him going. I agree with others that some form of motorisation would be ideal, and that it is disappointing that all the technically complex bits are hidden form view, but it was great fun and gave us some real quality time together! Looking for our next lockdown project now...
