This train set has great play value. Four train vehicles, two road vehicles, removable loads and the signal box, buffers and level crossing that make the railway scene. It is one of the best LEGO train sets I have bought since 1990. As a long-time fan I still like the versatility of the earlier 12V trains even though the power technology has developed since that era.As an adult fan and an engineer I bought two of these train sets so that I could test the new Powered-Up technology. Linking one handset to one hub was straightforward, using the instructions in the set. Linking two hubs to one handset was more difficult but there are instructions in the LEGO community forum online and I got there after some trial and error.Once you have linked one hub to the handset, turn it off, link another and then turn the first one on again. This seemed to work most of the time. Once it had worked I could move the hubs between the 5 channels happily, having them either on the same channel and acting together, or on different channels with the handset switching between the two active channels as its green button was pressed. I wonder if I could have 2 or more hubs on each of the 5 channels, for double-header trains? Is the limit 5 channels (with multiple hubs per channel) or 5 hubs in total? With two similar sets containing minifigs I often change their parts round in the second set so that I have more unique figures. Trains look better with more than one of each wagon too. The log wagons are great as a pair. The container wagons now have the two snowmobiles on one and the two bank boxes on the other. The cranes have to face the same way as a pair because their jibs stick out over the end of the wagon; that's a shame because I liked the idea of them as a pair of breakdown cranes, where they would usually run jib-to-jib.I look forward to getting the 88005 Powered-Up light bricks, which are now available. I hope there will be some provision to use previous motors and lights with the new hub, since the non-smart ones need only 2 of the 6 wires to be connected. I would also like to connect NXT/EV3 parts to the Powered-Up hub. Apart from the connector being different, is the electrical interface the same? What the Powered-Up system really needs is a LiPo battery multiplexer hub to add to the Bluetooth hub that is in the train sets. Another 4x8x3 box would contain two LiPo cells (like 8878) and the charging circuit, and would have four Powered-Up ports, 2 on each end. A flying lead would plug into the Bluetooth hub to get the motor drive and smart signals. The multiplexer hub would power the 4 ports together from its LiPo battery, using the signal from the Bluetooth hub. The smart motors would behave as they do with an NXT/EV3 multiplexer. A tiny switch (used in some Power Functions items) would allow the 2 ports on one end to have reversed motor drive compared to the others. This would enable use in a train, where two train motors connected to either end of the multiplexer hub would turn in opposite directions when the tiny switch was set to "reverse". With the motor wires both towards the middle of the locomotive (avoiding the couplings and finding the holes in the baseplate), both bogies could be powered, which is what adult fans often do with 9V or PF trains. This item would go a long way to helping adult fans with the transition from Power Functions by providing a way to power multiple motors from the same receiver hub. It would also use rechargeable LiPo power for the motors, keeping the AAA cells for only the Bluetooth receiver and a low-current signal to the multiplexer hub; this would make the AAA batteries last as long as with a light brick and would be good for the environment. As an electronics and safety engineer I would be happy to help further under NDA if you like. Please would you keep all Powered-Up products versatile, so I don't need a mobile phone for any of them. I'm happy with the handset so far.I really wish the couplings didn't have to have as much of the buffer beam as they do. I know it was done to prevent swallowing but this did not need the full width. I build larger trains and the 6-wide buffer beams are not useful for that; they are also a substantial part of the cost of a train set.One real problem I do have with the set is that the locomotive snowplough-buffer beams scrape on the track. This should have been designed-out during product testing. In reality no-one has a perfectly flat floor, table or railway layout. Those who buy more train sets like to make hills and bridges to go over other tracks. This means even the snowplough buffer beams need good ground/rail clearance. Please would you redesign the piece with at least 1mm more clearance and send me 4 of them for my 2 locos. Thanks.

This is an amazing set! So many play features and such high quality models. Our boys were absolutely delighted to receive this, and to be honest I was just as excited. The set comes in twelve numbered bags with six instruction booklets. It's easy to break down the build into the separate elements, which is great for sharing and helpful for setting break points during the couple of hours it takes to put the whole thing together. We built the set together, but our 7-year-old would have been fine to do most of it by himself other than fitting the batteries and setting up the controller. The train is impressively quick. It has ten speed settings forwards and backwards, and at full speed it's fast enough to risk coming off the track on the corners. The Bluetooth controller is very simple for an adult to set up, and the phone app is pretty much the same. You need 6x AAA batteries for the engine and 4x AAA batteries for the controller.Aside from running the train, the central play dynamics are using the forklift to move the money from the van to the container, picking up the containers and logs with the crane and loading the wagons. It's all really well designed. The set links with the police/bank robber Lego City theme very well, and also has a small Arctic Expedition speeder in one of the containers. It's a nice touch that such a big set links with lots of the other Lego City ranges. We were given a pack of extra track to go with it, and I'm glad of that. The single loop and siding in the box would maybe be a bit limited by themselves.Other than that, I can't recommend this set highly enough!

This is a nice set though a little pricey for what you get. The cargo train is well made and robust - the track is the same as other lego trains, so you can add to or extend any existing track. You get a single set of points. \This is a Power Up set, so you get both the controller but also can pair with a device such as phone or tablet - this is handy if you have more than one train to control or just want some more options (or lose the the controller...!)6x AAA batteries required, which last a fair amount of time and generate a good turn of speed - enough to spectacularly crash the train if that’s your thing.the crane is a little fiddly and tends to fall over a lot - the weakest element of this set in my view, but the other wagons are good quality. This works well combined with the passenger train set and I have to say is a lot easier to set up and then play with than a well known brand that specialises in trains (starts with an H) - and with it being Lego, there is so much more you can add to it as well (In my son’s case, the Star Wars troopers landed in the middle, intent on hijacking the train...).A very good set with a lot of elements that can be built out or incorporated - still feels a little expensive to me, but there aren’t many train sets to pick.Recommended.

When my older brother talked with me about the family gathering to purchase such an expensive Lego for a little bopy's 4th birthday, I was ready to do my part. Being a lego fan for almost 37 years (i'm 40, so for how long I remember myself!), and being the main guilty party that my nephews and niece for loving lego (they are 4, 7 and 9). For several reasons the build process was up to me and my older brother, but the look on the Pedro's (the birthday boy) face meant we need to get it build on a fast pace, and it was worthy! As soon as the train was build he started to prepare the tracks to race with the other train set that he already has (the 60197) . The story been told now for the review...although a bit expensive,we can see where the money goes, with over 1200 parts and a great design with several features on all sections it means that the playability will last for a long time. Ideas for a near future (let's hope it happens)It would be great to see a train station , maybe inspired on the train station on the harry potter 2019 train, something looking XIX century arquitecture of 1960's one, with 2 our 3 train tracks (like a normal train station)! The second idea would be a cargo truck with several containers for the train.Best regardsAdriano

I got my hands on this set a little over a year ago. It was my first experience with a lego train. Although I have seen many through the decades. I have to say this might be one of the best starter kits, for anyone thinking about getting into lego trains. Not only do you get a fair amount of track, you get a selection that enables more than just a typical circle shape. The train itself has many features. The amount of things anyone could do to play with this is high. From the crane being able to move things around. To having all sorts of stories play out with the many figures and vehicles.I think one of the best things about current lego trains is the couplers. They have very strong magnets, allowing the train cars to just get near each other and they pull together, and stay connected. To sum things up, this is one nice quality set. If you are planning to get into lego trains, this is probably the best current start you can get.

My 6 year old is train mad and when he unwrapped this on his birthday he was positively exploding with excitement. An expensive set, but you get a lot things in it, and the Engine and wagons surprised me with their size. Only 2 words of caution though:The train is a battery monster - 6 AAAs for the engine and 4 more for the remote and an extended session will murder the batteries at quite a rate. Rechargeable batteries and a charger are a must to save you from more excessive wallet surgery later on. I event went for enough rechargeable batteries for two complete sets for the engine to save downtime. The second problem is that once into it, the supplied oval of track will not be enough for the user,so more will no doubt be demanded (cue further wallet surgery). All in all though: expensive but will keep short chaps (and chapettes) happy for a long time. As long as you have the battery stockpile.

We started my 5 y.o. son's Lego train set with a passenger train with which he quickly became bored ('it just goes round and round'!). Fortunately we had much more fun together playing with the various interactive elements of this set. He also had another cops/robber City set so this ties into the robber/bank truck/money and gold bars in the train set, extending the playing options. At full price it's a bit expensive, but I got this in the black Friday sale, so am quite happy with the value for money. If you consider all the elements (track, train, wagons, vehicles and motor/control system) you can see there is a lot in this set. People obviously buy these to take certain elements out and sell unwanted parts on usual auction site.the only real criticism of the set is that just one more switch would allow a side loop as opposed to a simple siding. Otherwise it's a 5 star recommendation.

This was a Christmas present for my 4YO. The plan to be a do it with dad present. He was overjoyed and had asked for this despite it not strictly being suitable for his age. The building was all him. The only thing dad was needed for was battery insertion and connecting the controller. This has remained part of the furnishings in our house (with dozens of added track sets) it circumnavigates our lounge and dining room and is played with dailyMany of the other lego sets he has built have joined our Lego city. The fact this set has a working crane carriage really enhances the play ability as does the fork lift and van which forms part of the setOverall with dozens of sets over all the kids, this is one of the very best and I see it having real longevity in keeping them engaged

This is a great set for kids to spend the entire Christmas Day with. The pieces are fun to build and have lots of great little details to it. Once they are built, there are so many different storylines that can be played. The crane is super fun to operate, and of course, driving the train with the remote control is even better! The robber and the money transport add extra storylines for play. The signal tower is great too, because it helps the train play.AMAZING: The train tracks WORK WITH MY OLD TRAIN TRACKS from 30+ years ago! Just mount the old and the new on a base plate. There will be a half-a-nupsy gap, but thats okay.Just use a 1x1 flat piece at the end of the old track to keep it up on the same level.

9 x AAA batteries are required for the remote control and power pack. I bought some Amazon Basics rechargeable batteries and they are perfect for the job. There is something like 10 speed the train can travel at.Being Evil Uncle Paul, I got my 6 year old nephew into trouble by changing the points when he was going full speed and then crashed into the buffer. The buffer took the shock... my sister-in-law didn't... I did confessed eventually.Building it was fun and easy. Several instruction booklets are included.Plenty of figures, vehicles and opening doors allows excellent play. And of course, this being Lego... you can just add on whatever you desire.*AFOL... adult fan of Lego.

So many build hours and so much in it. Lots of fun role play too. I got this for my son’s birthday on 7th December and he is really happy with it. Some fiddly bits like connecting the string to the crane but otherwise he managed to build it independently. It needs a lot of batteries but the app reduces that by 6 as you don’t really need the battery controller. The app works really well with fun sound effects and quick controls. Would recommend. Unlike the last set there are no problems with the trains side panels constantly falling off - it just seems sturdier.

28.12.2020

What can I say, it's Lego. With the added bonus of a motorised train with controller and an app to give additional control and sound effects via tablet or phone. Christmas present to the kids. A big hit. They set up same day and have got themselves up early every day since to play with it. Only downsides are the lack of track (have had to buy more), the arguments over who's turn it is (we've had to buy another train set too to stop the arguing) and the price! It's Lego! Oh and the amount of floor space (we need a bigger house!)

20.2.2020

We bought this for our 8 year old for Christmas and I have to say that in my onion it was worth the money we paid. It took him ages to assembled the kit to begin with and then he has played with it for hours. It is, as you would expect from Lego, very well constructed and thought out. There are a few extras to build as well as the train itself which adds interest to the finished toy. Once constructed it stays on the track beautifully and whizzes round. Fantastic set, recommended for any train / Lego fan.

19.4.2020

Overall this could be fantastic, my grandson (lego master we call him) is six and assembled this without issue. Our main problem is with the battery pack itself. We can not get it to work beyond one time on a new set of batteries (we are on our fourth set). We sent in a request to customer service for guidance but did not receive an answer. We bought a replacement battery for the train but alas it had different connections. If we could get it to work we would love it.

3.1.2019

Got this for my son for Christmas, it’s a really big box and the train and carriages are really detailed and took some time to build. It comes with a fairly large oval track and siding and the new controls are easy to use. My son particularly likes the app with the sound effects and ability to control the train with his iPad.All in all a good set that will provide hours of play but fairly expensive hence the 4 stars.
