I have been a big fan of LEGO trains since my first set (171) in 1974. I have every generation of train from 1966 right through to this new train which arrived today.Good points:Up to LEGO's usual standard of detail and build complexity. Nice use of colours and overall a rather good train and an excellent addition to my collection. The usual selection of Minifigs and accessories and nice details like the signal and the small 'halt' - you can't really describe it as a 'platform'. Comparable to the 7938 City Passenger Train in terms of style, build and what you get in the box. Essentially a 'revised' version of a fairly similar train. The oval of track (complete circle plus 8 straights)is the usual minimum for a 'complete' train set to get you going and, fortunately, the track is the same as the older Power Functions track so if you have other sets, you can simply expand your layouts with ease.Bad points:Very few, really. I'm slightly concerned that for what is essentially a similar train set to the 7938 in terms of concept and content is much more expensive (>50%) that its predecessor. Certainly not a 'pocket money' toy. I appreciate that it has a whole new control system (using Bluetooth and 'Powered Up!' instead of the earlier infra-red Power Functions) which means that for those who use tablets or smartphones (I don't!) then an app is available, but the incompatibility with the previous trains means means having to juggle multiple controllers in order to control your entire collection. I have invested heavily in Power Functions, over the last six years, motorising both my Maersk Train and Horizon Express as well as retro-fitting many of my earlier trains with Power Functions.Perhaps Powered Up! will have future options that enhance the functionality of the trains? I eagerly await some lights (as the original Power Functions units are not compatible) as the cab of the engine appears to have provision for retrofitting headlights. Just controlling a single train motor as it stands right now limits the possibilities somewhat.Bearing in mind I have no intention to go down the 'smart device route' and will be exclusively using the supplied remote, I find that the controller is very hard to use. The much smaller size of the unit and the small speed +/- buttons rather than the rotary wheels of the Power Functions controller might be great for smaller children, but as a middle-aged man with hands like a bunch of bananas, I find the new controller very un-ergonomic and far too small for my liking. In summary, a perfectly good train, but I have major reservations about the control system. I suspect I will 'downgrade' it to PF to keep it compatible with my existing collection and make it easier for me to operate. I am sure there are those who will embrace Bluetooth and will possibly want to go the other way and retrofit older trains with this newer system, so I will be interested to see what sort of price point LEGO will pitch a new Smart Hub and PU Train Motor. I suspect it will be more expensive to convert older trains to the new standard than it is to buy the Power Functions kit to convert this train back to infra-red. I await developments (and lights!) with interest.

A birthday tea, 4yrs in boxes and a nagging nephew and I decided to dig out part of my Lego collection and set up my City on the dining room table, complete with circular railway line.Always the case, Lego fever descended and I decided to purchase this set. I'm 43 but theres still nothing better than up turning the box with all the numbered bags appearing across the table. Watching a bit of tv in the background the set took me 3hrs to complete.I love the yellow and blue colour scheme - it is bright and striking. I was amazed at the detail on this set not only in cosmetics but build also. I see the engine chassis as multiple drain covers for ventilation. The design of the buffet car is fun, with standing tables, food and beverage selection. Always good for City residents too, to find sustenance on a long journey. The passenger car started off with a luggage hold, which is a nice addition and ensures the gangway's are kept clear.Due to the age of my previous set, I now possess one train on old RF, and this set on the newer bluetooth connection. Yet to link it to my phone for the authentic train sounds, but first thing is to maybe start saving up for the new power up battery set to upgrade my fleet. The build and first few circuits of my City kept my nephew quiet for a whole afternoon, which is no mean feat. I knew he was getting bored when the zombie apocalypse started but then thankfully, it was time for him to go home!I then had it all to myself. A really good set, lots of play options, especially as it comes with it's own halt station. Compliments other trains in the fleet, and a nice addition to any City.

I bought this set for my Nephew (aged 6) as a Christmas gift. The build is pretty straight forward enough, I gave him a hand with the engine and his dad helped with the trailers.Pro's: The Bluetooth controller has variable set speeds and can be programmed for more than one train set.The over all construction is nice and solid, so won't disintegrate easily if it falls off of the track.Train carriages have nice detail and easy access roofs for play.Cons: The 6 battery power brick makes the Engine piece top heavy, making it very easy to topple over at higher speeds.Needs more track. The set could have been massively improved with the addition of a least 2 more straight piece's.for the price I would have liked a little more track.Tips: Don't forget this set requires 10 AAA batteries to operate, 4 for controller, 6 for the engine.younger builders may need help depending on build ability.A small screw driver will be require to open the battery compartments (philips or flat head will work).I would suggest buying extra track sets 60205 and switch tracks 60238, these additions will massively improve your base set.

I saw some of the other reviews complaining about that the rear car, as it do not feel like a true train because it needs another carrier engine to form a closure.I am sorry to say that this is what makes it perfect for collectors.I love the fact that Lego actually listened to fans and provided us with this set, I own 8 of the previous version, then I had to go here an there to buy a additional middle cars so that the train looks a bit longer at great cost and time.In this set I do not have to, Lego did what I was hoping for, I can now retire my old trains, replace it with the new one, buy 2 sets/train and get a true long one, more realistic, and I have more control over what I pay for,I simply love it.I hope the day comes, when they do the same for the road tiles and train tracks, were they sell same types together, not forcing to buy a straight road with a T-Junction or a curved. I also hope they introduce larger roads tiles (like autobahn) and some ramps to build bridge roads, and since they are not adding runways tiles to their airports sets, I hope they introduce some for sale separate.

The yearly Lego passenger train is always worth taking a look at, and this is one of the better incarnations. The fact that it comes with 2 carriages rather than the usual 2 engines means that it will be much easier to collect whole rakes of carriages for longer trains, which is an excellent thing in itself. The additional fact that one carriage has dining car modifications is even better, and the interior of the carriage is effective. As usual we get a small amount of track and a little station halt, but they key thing here is the train itself which looks great, with an excellent colour scheme and details. Be aware that it is one plate taller than the last white passenger train, which may affect clearances if you have a layout set up, and it uses the new Power Up Bluetooth system which is significantly less bulky than the old system. All in all well worth adding to your collection.

Just got this set for Christmas. Love 99.9% of it. Had to give it 4 stars on one really bad issue. The new stickers TLG has come out with are just not that good. Looks at my picture attached vs the actual box and older versions of this set. The new transparent stickers just don't have enough color to block out all that yellow under neigh. Have come to expect better quality from Lego and these stickers are a significant down grade from previous offering. Most disappointing as older version of this set (2018/19) had superior stickers. That said, the set looks great else wise. Good build. Kids love it. New Power Functions 2.0 works great. Already had a few crashes no issue with motor or controls.Track good. Small side builds are good. Could always use a few more figures but those are easily enough to add. Just can't fix that darn sticker problem.

I purchased this set to try out the new Bluetooth Control system on an older Lego set for use at a train show (NMRA 2018 KC, MO). When the hall was almost empty the system had great range. However as the hall filled up and more and more people with cell phones and Bluetooth devices came into the show the performance decreased drastically. Was better to use the older Power Functions than Bluetooth. The set over all is a fair set for to begin with on a table or child's room. It is missing a rear engine that all speed type trains have, making the train seem in complete. Overall a starter set for a child. Is not up to the standards of the Lego trains of the early 2000's. They were more detailed and more realistic. Also the light add on (88005) listed in the instructions are no where to be found on the Lego Website when searched for.

I loved the design of this new train. I have almost all of the Lego trains since 2010. This set is one of the coolest ones next to the Horizon Express sets that I have (which also didn't come with an end car or a rear engine like this). However I bought 2 of the Horizon express sets as they didnt come with power functions, so it made sense to buy 2 of them and add just 1 power function set to the train. However this train is a bit weird situation to get to a complete finish as if I buy 2 of them, them I am paying for 2 motors for the same connected trains - so thats a waste of money. Not sure why Lego chose to release a half done train with Power functions as it just makes the complete set more expensive.Anyway being a born Lego fan,I can only like Lego and never hate it for anything. Good work Lego team on the new train!

I bought this for myself but with the intention of my young Godsons aged 5 and 3 playing with it as well (any excuse!) and I'm really pleased with it so far. I built it up myself and it was pretty straightforward, the boys have enjoyed playing with the minifigures and sending the train round the same track as my Christmas train (which was interesting!). I know there have been some complaints from other builders about the battery usage, but I can't really comment on that as I've only been using it in short spells. I moved the position of the seats in the end carriage so the minifigures could sit in them. I think it's a really smart looking set,my friend commented that she hadn't realised it was Lego until she saw the studs on the top!

This set is a must have for fans of the rails. If you would like to see where I believe the inspiration for this train came from look for a video on YouTube called Eurostar from the air. I like this set so much I bought two so I could have a full length model of the Eurostar, in lego form that is. Its not exact but it looks close enough for me.Overall fun to build and watch cruise around the rails. Only downside is not with the set itself really. We just want more trains and train track options like the older sets that had flashing lights/signs or lampposts for a train yard, and the ever elusive crossover track, this time if you were to make it needs an upgrade of the tracks being able to switch independently from one another.

This LEGO is top on my list of all time LEGO kits. LEGO 60197 consists of 677 pieces, manuals, 4 minifigures (two train passengers, a train attendant, and conductor). It comes with a 10-speed remote control that provides easy and fun play. The front train car consists of the engine piece which can connect to an app on you phone, or the Bluetooth remote controller. However, this eats up plenty of AAA Batteries! The second car is a passenger car, with seats and a luggage case. The third car has a refreshment table and other cool stuff. My only disagree about this set is that it should come with plenty more track pieces. If you set the speed high enough, the train will fall off the short supply of track.Well done,LEGO!

This is a good set. The train and coaches are really well designed. The motor is impressively quick. You can control the locomotive via bluetooth with a free app on your phone as well as with the included controller. The train takes 6x AAA batteries, the controller takes 4x AAA, so 10 total. The main play dynamics are starting and stopping the train and loading the coaches with passengers. That's a bit limited compared to other Lego sets at this price point, but the motor and controller are the real highlight here. For that reason, you'll want to get extra track if you can. Adding some loops and sidings adds a lot to the experience. This is good, but if you can afford the extra cost,

This set was purchased for my 5 year old grandson. He & I love it. His dad had the older 9v trains from the early 2000s and we found a cache of the older metal track. It was great to be able to use the old track to greatly expand the set and have it run all over the dining room. The color and details of the model are up to the usual Lego standards. I particularly like the accessories for the dining car.It would be nice to be able to purchase a set with additional cars and/or a non-powered locomotive. Longer battery life would also be useful, but all-in-all a good buy and hours of fun.I plan on re-motoring the older 9v trains from my son's collection and build a bigger railway.

Bought this for my son as a Christmas present despite some reservations that this set was a little over priced. However, after building and playing with it, I have to say it is a great addition to our Lego city collection and my son loves it. Five stars to Lego! That said, please be warned if buying from Amazon. This is quite a large Lego box and Amazon choose to deliver it in just a plastic bag with absolutely no protection - Why, only why!!? Consequently, it arrived with a LARGE dent in one corner, which was more than a little annoying for such a premium set. Therefore, I will certainly think twice before ordering large Lego sets from Amazon again. One star to Amazon.

Bought this for my son for Christmas. We were not disappointed and I think I may of had more fun than him building and operating it! Pairing with the remote was easy and also with the smart phone app which offers additional features such as sounds to go with the railway. It is so easy to operate and I’m looking forward to buying some more track for it to extend the fun. It’s great for role play and for coordination-picking up the passenger from the platform whilst talking about where he’s going and also trying to stop the train smoothly and in the correct place. Lego really is fantastic wether your in it for fun or a collector - you can’t go wrong!
