Nanny and Grandad bought this as a Christmas present for our 6 year old boy. He loves Lego and couldn't wait to put it all together. Having taken note of some of the reviews they also bought both track packs and the station, without which I think there would have been some frustration as the track included in the train set itself is not really sufficient. It took a little while to assemble everything (mainly due to the ongoing festivities) but isn't that what building Lego models is all about. The end result was a huge hit and he absolutely loves it. Both he and his 4 year old sister have had hours of fun with it already and there will undoubtedly be much much more to come.He managed to overturnthe train once but immediately realised that if you slow it down on the bends it stays on the tracks. Presumably that is why there is a variable speed control.....This is a high quality, good value for money product (it was on offer at just under £70 at the time), which is visually impressive and easy to operate. I would highly recommend it to all Legoists.I do think (and I am clearly not alone) that there really ought to be more track included in the set. A plain oval layout would have become boring very quickly and also made it difficult to set out all the new 'real estate' that appears on a daily basis. Although I think the extra track packs are overpriced I would suggest that anyone looking at buying the train set should seriously consider buying additional track. One added bonus.........when the little boys go to bed, the big ones come out to play!

LEGO is a toy manufacturer of the highest calibre and this train-set proves it. I got this as a Christmas present to my six year old boy and he was thrilled. He managed to assemble it in approximately forty five minutes while I was making sure he was not missing any step and despite the fact that we had no batteries and that he was only able to run in manually once he finished, he loved it.Now this train is perfect for a six-year old boy who is into LEGO City kits but for an older kid or a grown-up LEGO fan there are some features missing that might be disappointing. For example, The train has no doors. Unlike other LEGO city kits, like the yellow bus that comes with the pizza restaurant and its bus stop, the only way to insert mini figures inside it, is by lifting its roof. Not very realistic.Yet the colours, the design the stop etc are all very nice and make a very nice set indeed.+design = this is a truly modern electric traincolours = the red is much better than the white of its predecessor.train stop = its basic but cleverly designed and well equipped-no doors = mini figures can be inserted by lifting the rooftracks = provided you want to have your train running in a closed shape the only one you can make is a small ellipsepassenger wagons = there is only one and you cannot buy more separately

I have bought the Lego City Passenger Train for my 6 year old son for Christmas. He has in the past been a massive brio/Thomas wooden train and track fan but has moved on and whilst still obsessed with trains, is completely made on Lego. He is able to follow instructions for all the Lego City products he has previously had as gifts with minimal help from me. The Passenger Train ticked all the boxes too. Instructions were superb, the quality was fantastic. Once put together, it is a really great product for train enthusiast children too. The track and remote control are fun and give that extra something that normal Lego doesn't give. It does take a fair few batteries however so make sure you buy these in advance to save sad faces! My son is very keen on dismantling his Lego and then rebuiling, and the Train enables him to do this pretty much on his own using instructions. I did buy extra flexi tracks and normal tracks to make the track larger which I feel is really needed. I am planning to buy some switching track so there is a bit more interest in where the train goes. I don't really have anything bad to say about this product. Obviously pretty pricey however, I shopped around a lot and got a good deal on Amazon at the right time.

I purchased this a few years ago for my son, who has to be said does love the train. This was a Christmas present for him and he still uses it from time to time.As a one off buy though, it's worth bearing in mind that this is really a train with a few bits of track. To get anywhere near a decent layout you will have to buy a few packs of track to beef it up to something half decent.Pros:+ Usual good quality from Lego, nice details and well made+ Remote works well+ Enjoyable product, that has had quite a bit of use+ Has potential as an expanded train set (ie to add more to it)Cons:- Fairly pricey (there are other makers around now who offer better value)- Long build time (took a bit longer than expected to make, not unusual for lego)- Supplied track is small and only suitable for a very basic oval layout- Takes 9 AAA batteries! It's a good toy, and worthy of 4 stars, but for the money (not much change from £100) I would expect Lego to include a bit more track (at least 50% more than is supplied) By all means check this out, but make sure you pick up a few packs of extra track, otherwise you'll be left with a very simple circle layout that gets boring pretty quickly

We gave our son the Lego freight train for Christmas. He used all his birthday money to buy this train so that he had two trains. He says he prefers this train to the cargo one, but he usually plays with both of them. The track in this set is very limited, you will need a lot more than this and it will take up a lot of floor space. We bought 1000ma rechargeable AA batteries for the engines and think this has been a good investment. As a previous reviewer said, these trains are a bit tall and at full tilt on new batteries will just roll off the track on the corners. He has tended not to do this.We have used most of his existing LEGO blocks to make elevated track which has impressed his friends. You have to climb quite high to get over the pantographs.Overall this has proved to be a fun toy, but a lot of the fun is building the tracks, as it cannot usually be left out.

My 5 and a half year old loves Lego and loves following the instructions to build things. He has also always been an obsessive train fan, so this seemed like the ideal Christmas present for him this year! He had been asking for it and initially I thought it was too pricey, but he seemed really interested in it and so I gave in!The nice thing is that it has sections to build on different occasions and you can add on to it. He next used some Christmas money to buy the platform and bridge over the track. He spent hours building it all and loves using the remote control to send the train round the track. The track is a little sensitive and train easily comes off the track when he is using it.Though as he gets older and takes more care with it I think this will come easier to him.Good buy = but very expensive

This was a gift from Santa to my nine year old. He spent Christmas Day building it (with a few breaks to open other presents). He had wanted this train set for some time so he was thrilled and it was by far his best present. He didn't need any assistance building it and the train and carriages were much bigger than I had thought - speedier too! We purchased the station as well which kept him busy on Boxing Day. Really recommend this if you have a real Lego fan in mind. He didn't use an electronic gadget for at least two days so really pleased with our old fashioned Christmas of building and playing on the floor. If I were to be picky....Definitely will need to buy extra track with this set and don't forget the 9 AAA batteries you will need to go with it. Apart from this, absolutely brilliant train set

I purchased this train plus the station and extra track for one of my Grandson's birthdays. He has 3 other brothers and by the time the boxes were unpacked all four boys were into making up all the Lego pieces and before long the train was running. It runs very smoothly around the track and they all played with it really well - meaning we could have a cup of tea in peace and quiet, that doesn't happen often!! The next day instead of an oval track they had used the railway track as two lines running from the lounge to the dining room and using all the other Lego they have acquired over the years had made various buildings, trucks etc to go alongside the new layout. What a wonderful toy.The younger brother has now asked for the cargo train for Christmas - I can't wait.

Great Items indeed. Very well designed to be as sturdy as possible, a bit of a struggle in our household. The big test - the play test has went well. Out of all his presents this one has been very well used so far. I believe we have to move up to a dedicated Lego play area now, complete with roads, grass, you know the kind of stuff. The track is great quality, much better than some of the tracks you can get with other sets. Clicks together great, the bendy bits are great. A1.The trains are fantastic, great viewing at the passengers - very important to our 5year old.The remote control is very responsive, giving both forward and reverse motion easily without any complicated things to do.Overall, another great item from Lego. Hats off to them.

This is another great addition to my LEGO collection, with this set you can have hours of fun. This set is quite fragile and needs a couple of batteries. There is a rechargable battery box you can buy but it is quite expensive. Unfortunately, you need quite a bit of space and there is not much track supplied. You can add lights to the set which you can buy from eBay or the LEGO Shop, but it is tricky to install the lights. One error LEGO have made when designing the set, is the space in the carriage for the electronics. The wires get crushed by the roof of the carriage, and if you are not careful it can damage the wires.Overall, it is a great set but I do feel it needed better designing, and should have had more track supplied.

Had not intended to purchase this as I had most presents sorted for Christmas 2013, but after seeing it on offer at half price I felt it was too good a deal to miss. Have now decided to keep it aside for my sons birthday present in June. He has so much Lego ( most of it bought at well discounted prices on Amazon!) that his bedroom resembles a Lego store. It looks a great set but I have purchased extra track ( also half price on Amazon!!!!) to go with it as I didn't fell there was enough track with the set, which is a pity really as I'm sure it wouldn't hurt Lego to add a bit more track in the box. Apart from that looking forward to seeing my son enjoy this train set.

One very happy six year old grandson. Dad seemed to be quite happy to be building Lego again as well. As soon as the set was built it went into continuous play mode and a smile was on the grandson's face all day long and the train has been played with every day since. The batteries seem to be lasting an unexpectedly long time which is a pleasent suprise. One word of warning though, the track supplied is very mean and does no credit to Lego. We bought the extension set and I think that without it the grandson would not have been anywhere near as happy. Come on Lego, supply a decent length of track, after all this set is not cheap.

My son (7 years old) has wanted this for ages but was just too expensive (over £100 on other sites). When he saw it on here for under £80 (slightly over with the postage cost) he pulled together all his savings and bought it and hasn't looked back! He put it al together himself (he is pretty lego obsessed!) so a 7 year old lego enthusiast would definitely be able to do it by themselves and he has not stopped playing with it. It's not too big and the track can easily be taken apart and put back together (if you need to hoover the carpet!). All in all a great product and I would highly recommend.

What do you get for a boy who has already got Brio and Tomica and still wants more train stuff. Answer...a Lego train. His has been a massive success. He has spent all today carefully driving the trains around the track stopping it at the the platform. It even encouraged him to get out the box of Lego I had been collecting to build a 30cm tunnel. Would definitely recommend this product. Th instructions are so easy to follow and the product is fantastic quality as you would expect from this manufacturer. The age recommendation is 6+... My son is 4 and coped brilliantly.

At the price I paid, its great value for money. Its a complete, albeit basic train set with full oval of track, nice looking train with transmitter unit, I haven't assembled it yet, but am looking forward to that.An added bonus with these new RC Trains/ City lego sets is that they share the new power functions Infra-red transmitter/ receiver technology found in lego robotics sets. The other thing that isn't obvious is that the track isn't electrified taking away what I see as the major drawback of conventional model trains/ scalectrix.
