Like most LEGO sets these days this one consists of a set of parts which are far more specialised than the generic square ones some of us grew up playing with, but the fun is the same. It comes with an illustrated step-by-step instruction manual that most kids, given a little patience, can follow to create the finished vehicle. These sets are perhaps less versatile than the old school LEGO, it is possible to slightly alter the design of the vehicle but trickier to make anything significantly different. However they're a great introduction into the principles of LEGO modelling and once you've got a few sets you can pool the parts and lots of other options open up.Although it's part of the LEGO Technic range this particular model wasn't too tricky to make, the only thing younger kids might struggle with are the couple of decals you have to stick to certain parts and they might benefit from the steadier hand of an adult or sibling. There are about 50 steps in the construction but each one is clearly illustrated in the manual without the need for words. In the end you get a funky-looking race car with the added bonus of a 'pull-back' friction motor that's powerful enough to send it careering across the room. The 'Whack!' feature means that the front engine (not the actual friction motor) comes flying out when you collide with something, which needless to say delights young kids. It's great that kids get something dynamic and fun after all the effort of construction and the thrill of deliberately crashing it into things doesn't seem to wear off that quickly. At least not as quickly as you and your furniture might like it to - so consider getting two so they can be crashed into each other because that's even more fun.

At age 7, my older nephew is right at the younger end of the recommended age spectrum for this Lego technics set. The set was his first introduction to the Technics range - and seemed about the right level to me. The design and nature of the pieces was more complicated than Lego sets he's used in the past, but not so much so that it became intimidating or frustrating. My nephew likes fine motor skill-based tasks, and with a bit of assistance and a couple of building sessions before and after Sunday lunch he had a racing car with some satisfying extra features, that he'd built for himself. This isn't by any means the most complicated of Technic Lego sets - it doesn't have an enormous catalogue of tiny components to assemble,so it may not appeal so much to more experienced/older builders within the recommended age range. Although the crash features will certainly have appeal. The self-drive and crash feature that sees the engine block popping out are precisely the kind of traits that appeal to a 7-year old. The set is reasonable value for money - I'm going to be looking out for the 'Bash' vehicle from the same series for my nephew's birthday in a couple of months time as I think he'd really enjoy playing with a pair of these with his younger brother.

This is a great introduction to Technics Lego and for those inquiring minds :)The kit has a recommended age range of "7-14", which I would say is pretty much spot on. Certainly for younger end of the range should be able to work through this bold and chunky build, with only a little bit of input. As for older kids, that'll depend on their experience with Lego. It's not the most challenging build, but great fun.Personally, I'm not a fan of the stickers in most kits now, but the kids love them. The combination of 'lime green', 'grey' and 'black' is also perfectly suited to the build. It's not the biggest kit, in terms of finished size or complexity (number of bricks), but there's plenty of fun to be had with the 'pull back'drive and the engine, which 'pops' out on impact (you can see how the kids love this). And yes, the built seems more than able to stand up to the abuse of a 10 year old and his little brother! There's plenty of 'hints' from Lego that this kit will also combine with others. So if nothing else, it makes an ideal starting point for Technics.Value for Money - OkPlayability - GreatBuild - Straightforward, but fun

Technic have always been an innovative part of the Lego brand, and it's nice to see the quality is still here. As always the instructions are clear to follow, and unlike a few sets of Lego instructions I've seen, I wasn't confused by grey pieces that were indistinguishable from the black pieces – it was all straight forward to assemble. The finish product is excellent, with the winding mechanism very strong, allowing the car to shoot off very fast (and straight) when fully wound back. There's a looser buffer on the front designed to take the impact if you choose to "battle" against another car. This comes off sometimes as it's only secured by a single line of connectors, but all in all this is a really quality model.

Nice introduction to the Technic builds. Nice and easy for an introduction for a young person. This is actually a nice looking buggy when built. It has nice striking colours and the pull-back motor is pretty powerful for Lego Technic set. This nice thing about the WHACK is that the front engine comes off when it hits the front of the car. Nice example of the intricacies of Lego Technic builds and the many combinations and designs to make.Highly recommended for young Lego enthusiasts.

The Amazon pictures show exactly what you're getting. This could be a great way to discover Lego Technic sets. I remember my first, the original helicopter, go-kart and car chassis. All of those had straight bricks. Nowadays, Lego has curves and specialist shapes.WHACK is a member of a small group and if bought with 42073,a combination vehicle can be made or race the pair.IT'S LEGO, THE CHOICE IS YOURS !!

I loved spending time with my son building this. He is 5 but we did it easily in a couple of hours. The instructions (as always) are very clear. the hardest part os often finding the smallest part to use on each step. Once it was built it was reasonably robust and could be played with like a normal toy without falling to pices (much!)

This is fun toy with brilliant play value. Mt nephew loves it. It's fun to assemble—like lots of Lego—and happens to look really cool. The 'crashing' idea works brilliantly—it encourages dissasembly and rebuilding. It works well as a standalone toy and can of course be mixed with all other lego. Great idea as gift.

Think lego is brilliant - this is good value for lego technic. It's a medium size car to build and great to race - I love the look of it.It's pull back and so great to have fun with.Lego instructions are always good! - good for some older children and of course adults!

My nephew had it built in about 10 minutes. He loved it though. The good thing about these models is that they can be used with the other cars to make an even bigger one. I ended up buying 3. They are a good price and make a great gift for anyone who loves Lego!

slightly more complicated to put together than the usual Lego pieces but, as with all Lego models, the instructions are clear. (6 year old needed help building it but it does say 7-14). the pull back feature is cool!

Excellent toy. 7 year old (experienced Lego builder) managed most of this on his own with just some assistance. Once built, he loved playing with it as well (particularly as his brother got the other model - BASH)

Excellent toy and provided hours of amusement. Fiddly to put together but worth it. Lovely that it pulls back. My children were having races in the hall and making jumps for it as bought them one each.

Great on so many levels.. Making something out of lego that is functional too and works is great. So happy my daughter loves it, she keeps taking it apart and making it again.

Bought for my son for his birthday. He loves this, especially the pull back function. I love it as it kept him very busy while he built it. As always another great lego toy.
