In 1984 aged 10 I received my first Technic Lego set (a Lorry Crane) and I was hooked. Normal Lego was mundane after making models with gears and pulleys. Now, 30 years later my kids bought me this for Christmas. To say that Technic Lego has moved on since the 80's is like saying computers have got a little bit better! This thing is just amazing. Look at the list of moving parts:- Rotors spin, the main rotor much slower than the tail rotor as would be in real life- The rotor angles can be adjusted for lift- The wheels move in and out as one- The winch goes up and down- The Tail lift goes up and down- Sliding doorsAnd most are controlled from a single turning wheel through a 4 way switchable gearbox. The engineering involved is detailed and very well thought out. Technic Lego these days is made not in layers like normal Lego but with bars and pins. This is more like Mechano but without the tedious doing up of bolts. The advantage is that the model is rigid. I can pick this up by the tail and it is rock solid. It is also massive. 60CM from end to end. Building is fun too. It comes with 3 build books and I would guess the build lasted 12 hours or more. I did separate colours of bricks into Tupperware boxes first though to make finding things easier and allow me to stop building without losing bits.Just an amazing model for anyone technically minded.

I am admittedly a Lego fanatic, but this set beat all my expectations.I had passed it over a number of times, in favour of more expensive models or more cool-looking kits, but when I finally bought and built it, I was thoroughly impressed.Though the box talks about a few different functions, until you build it, you won't realise how much design work has gone into this thing. As well as turning the blades, you can tilt them, through a rather impressive feat of lego engineering. Then there's the winch, wheels and hatches all controlled from the same fancy gear box system. Also, you can't overlook the sheer physical size of this thing. It's the biggest kit in my collection.Worth every penny.

I got a great deal on this set, but even at full MSRP I think this set is one of the best values in technic sets. The model is fairly complex, with the gear selectors making it possible to control the retractable landing gear, winch, lower the back door, and turn the rotors, all with just one knob or power functions motor. The rotor pitch is also adjustable, via a separate lever near the cockpit door.We do have a bit of an issue on ours with a gear binding up when driving the rotors, but haven't yet been able to pin down the cause. As I haven't read other of other owners having this issue, I'm guessing that it's most likely something wrong in the assembly, not the kit itself.

This is a great model. I loved Technic as a child and now as a fully paid-up member of the big kid society (in my 30s), I love it even more (that I can afford the big models like this!)I've not tried the alternative model, but have kept the original helicopter instead. The gearing system is particularly clever and allows you to reroute the various drive shaft so that turning the main handle will alternate between driving the main rotar, deploying/hiding the weeks, operating the winch or stowing the rear entrance flap. Was great fun to build and sits pride of place on my office desk, much to the envy of my other work colleagues (who also admit to being big kids).

Very good product by LEGO, that holds a good value for money (1058 parts!). The model is quite intricate and a bit challenging but gives a lot of satisfaction when done. Finished model is much bigger than I anticipated! It should get even better when I get my hands of power functions set.The box has a lot of yellow / red parts and a good number of gears, but not much of more complex parts (only two small linear actuators).I am planning to build some MOC models and I started my collection with this set. I will add 8110 and 8043 sets soon - this should give me a huge variety of parts/mechanisms and hours of fun!

Definitely not your father's LEGO sets. More complicated = hours more fun. I like the fact that the Technic series isn't just bricks on top of another, so it gives young children the sense that they are actually building more complicated machines. This keeps their interest piqued and their creative juices flowing and sharp. The biggest bonus is - the actual finished product looks absolutely great! The helicopter looks and feels like a high end toy, definitely worth the time spent to build. Great product!

As lego has evolved it has become more technical. Back when I was young it was just basic blocks and you had to use your imagination more I think. These technic kits are much more complicated but very addictive. Having encouraged my son since he was young to play with lego, he is an avid fan and despite being 23 going on 10, he really enjoyed doing this on christmas day..... It certainly kept him occupied and looked brilliant when it was finished. Well worth the money.

This set is extremely complicated and requires 3 booklets to build! Therefore, mistakes are easily made. Has lots of moving things and a gearbox. Main rotors rotate and go up and down. Also, wheels tuck away, ramp at the back goes up and down, as does the winch. It can be turned into a different helicopter, but instructions need to be downloaded. I have not done this yet. Motors are not included. It is very big. I am 12 years old and have thoroughly enjoyed this.

Very enjoyable build & great value for money. but the alternate build is slightly disappointing - It doesn't really look 'real world' and fails to use all the available pieces. The primary build however is fantastic - Complex gearing, interesting build techniques & piece use.If you can get this for a price you're happy with, then I'd definitely suggest you pick it up.

This is a serious piece of kit which I'd've have loved to own in my early teens. The instructions are challenging but complete and the sense of accomplishment at the end is awesome. The attention to detail and the functionality are off the charts. The gearing and clutch mechanisms to work the various moving parts are a feat of truly beautiful engineering. So impressed!

I bought this a a Christmas present for my husband. He has LOTS of lego, but also a lot of health problems. Lego helps him concentrate, and is pleased when he sees a finished object. I couldn't afford a brand new one, so when I saw this on ebay, I just had to buy it. He had to take it apart a couple of times, but he got there in the end.

Great build which proved worth it as it is really big once built, the tail setion is a little thin but supports itself well. I wouldnt bother with the motor set as it would not really make it any better (its not going to fly haha)Would recommend for anyone who enjoys lego, looks very detailed when complete and stickered.

I've been a life long Technic fan and collector and this is definitely up there as one of the best so far. It's also great value on Amazon at the moment! You really need to add the motor functions motor kit (8293) to appreciate the best of it so allow the extra £25 to £30 for this when you buy.

This is the cheapest place we found to buy this item. My son bought it with his birthday money. He is only 9 but very technically minded and completed it in 2 days. Was very proud of himself. An impressive piece of kit. Very sturdy. Arrived fast. Thank you.

This item is now discontinued by Lego. I bought via ebay for £80 for my 7 year old son. He's about half way through & has done it pretty much himself. It is a big project but v impressive so far. As you would expect from Lego very we'll made.
