Upon opening on 18/08/16This is probably the big Scotch single malt moment of 2016 - the release of Kilkerran 12 YO. Produced at the Glengyle distillery in Campbeltown - one of the old distilleries that used to dominate the town and closed down and was refurbished and re-opened by Mitchell's, the owners of Springbank. Unlike many distilleries which rush out NAS products, Mitchell's have stuck to their principles and waited a full 12 years before releasing a standard production version.Over the last 7 years there have been Work In Progress (WIP) editions with some sherry and Bourbon cask editions so that punters can assess how the whisky is coming along.Last year the Bourbon cask was cask strength and a bit of a beast whereas the sherry cask was very reminiscent of Springbank. This 12 YO is 70% Bourbon cask and 30% sherry cask.1 tsp waterSmell - the Bourbon cask comes through strongly. Salty. Seaweed drying on a sunny beach. Sherry come through after a while. Tar. Smells like a Springbank.Taste - creamy, salty. There's something strange that I really can't put my finger on that I don't think that I've tasted in whisky before. Something vegetableish?Sharp finish.2 tsp water - until the mist appearsBetter. Fruity aromas. Salt. Tar. Resin. Still hard on the palate but there's more soft fruit here - melon and mango. Sherbet finish?Going to need to see how the bottle develops I think - it was always likely to be a challenging bottle.Impressions on 1 Sept:The Kilkerran 12 YO - open a week now - is calming down and coming along. Still needs 2 to 2.5 tsps water for a dram (mine tend to be c 40ml) to take the edge off. But there are now peaty notes and layers of fruit coming through in ways that are reminiscent of Ardbeg.22/09 - giving off lovely lemon syrup notes currently.

Only positives here! The bottle arrived well packaged, double thickness cardboard box containing the bottle inside it's own buoyancy aid, brilliant. I also liked the handwritten 'enjoy' on the paperwork. Good touch. I had never heard of this whisky, but a friend recommended a Campbeltown whisky. This had great reviews and subsequently has lived up to them. Really enjoying it. If you like Islay you'll like this. I'm not going into nose & tasting notes. I think that's quite individual to a point. This whisky is not a disappointment and I will be buying it again....soon. Cheers!

Wow...having read reviews I had expectations, but these were surpassed. Non chill filtered, bottled at 46%, no added colour, whisky as it should be. Superbly balanced with a surprising oiliness given the pale colour and a hint of saltiness lots of citrus and biscuity notes...all for £35, I know you can get some big producers 12 year old whiskys around this price point or cheaper but this is streets ahead! Superb...only problem is, now I can't run out...does amazon do subscription option on whisky?!?!!
