This is a lovely, smooth and complex rum which has the look and taste of a liquid version of an old fashioned Christmas pudding. I suppose that is what is meant by the International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC) when it says this rum has a:"...deep, old gold colour. Big, inviting, complex nose with prune, raisin, honey, clove and nutmeg. Full, but elegant entry into the mouth where layers of flavour follow the nose with addition of treacle, old marmalade. Super smooth and soft in the mouth with great density and silky flow. Some ripe, tropical flavours appear as does a light oak note. Long and pleasing finish."Whew! The trouble is that taste is so subjective. One person's 'nectar of the Gods'is another person's 'meh'. All I can say is that for me at least, I think for the complexity and depth of flavour, you are going to find it difficult to beat this in the £35-40 price range. It might be in the lower end of the premium rum market, but it has become the rum by which I tend to gauge others. Of course there are better and finer rums on the market, but you had better be prepared to pay substantially more.

I am afraid I don't have the correct taster's terminology to accurately describe just how good this rum is. However, I first tried this on a trip to the carribean some years ago and was pleasantly surprised at just how smooth (& sweet) a traditional spirit can be. I have since discovered, not surprisingly, that the Eldorado 12 y.o. has won the Gold medal at the Carribean Rum Taste Test (held in London) a mere 7 times. IMHO it is unsurpassed except by other El Dorado products, the 15 & 21 y.o. Which have won similar accolades.I have tried this on some "Single Malt" experts and they were a delighted as I was!Don't let the price put you off this really is nectar and worth every penny *****

When you first pop the cork you are greeted by sweet, fruity/spicy tones and perhaps floral notes?! There is something there that I can't quite describe. In the glass, it isn't quite as dark as it's older brother and is lighter than in the bottle. .Tasting: Again sweet, fruit and Oak (but not as prominent as you would expect from a 12 year old)... you can tell they are ex bourbon casks used to age. This, for me, is a sipping rum and a very good one at that. Though some may find it a touch sweet (those who hate additives in Rum). This is robust enough to mix though why would you?! If you do, try not to drown it with sugary liquids as I have mentioned this is sweet already.

This is a wonderful rum, I make no claims to being an experienced taster or connoisseur when it comes to rum, but with my limited experience i can say this; the flavours are very deep, its the perfect thing for an evening drink, especially in the cold, and certainly one to be sipped neat, mixing this would be an absolute travesty. The only other similar rum i can compare it to would be Pampero Aniversario which I'd say that I like more, but only for one reason. The Pampero has a much thinner consistency, the El Dorado is quite a bit thicker, and as such I'd suggest drinking with a cube or two. In short, if you've not tried it, you really should.

I first read a very complimentary review of this rum on The Cocktail Geek. Having found it on Amazon I then read some more very favourable reviews one of which was similarly fulsome about Diplomatico. I then read reviews of that rum to find that one review was equally fulsome in praise of Dooleys. From Dooleys I then returned full circle to El Dorado. In a round about way what I’m saying is that at this price point you’re going to get a very fine rum. This is one of them and I agree about the buttery richness mentioned In another review. This is one bottle that is safely tucked away at the back of the cupboard.

If you're looking to spend around £35 on a premium rum, this and a couple of others should be in your top options. El Dorado 12 is beautiful stuff. Quite different in character to Doorlys 12 and Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva which are both similarly priced and equally as good. They're all very different and from totally different parts of the world which is reflected in how they taste. For me, El Dorado 12 has a buttery richness and depth while Doorlys 12 is more subtle and floral and Diplomatico is all honey smoothness. You can't really go wrong with any of the above for this price point though.

I will start by repeating what most reviews say, the sweet, mellow dark sugar taste, almost honey like with just a gentle spice hint is excellent. It is definitely something you can sit and sip on an evening however it can get a bit sweet by the time you get to your third measure, when I say measure I mean in the liberal West Indian/South American measure.I bought this as part of my thirst to expand my taste knowledge of rum and its on par with many of the others I have tried such as Mount Gay, Appleton and Plantations.A strong 8/10.

Currently being 'tippled' with pride by an old Guyanase bloke who once played on the same river banks...its a smooth drink that rum drinkers would enjoyTake note, if your product says Demerara it has to come from Guyana in South America...For all those that aren't aware the Demerara is a river that runs through this lush tropic country. El Dorado is a Guyanaese rum...produced using Demerara sugar cane...its the only place in the world that can produce Demerara sugar due to the location of the sugar cane...Sip slow and enjoy

This is a very pleasant, easy-to-drink, 12-year-old demerara rum. Deep in colour and rich in flavour, this rum delivers a delightful and elegant finish. I was very pleased with the taste, being evocative of rich honey and demerara sugar; this rum is not overly spicy and has a lovely vanilla/caramel finish. I found it best to drink this rum neat over an ice cube. The rum comes in a very nice bottle, being suggestive of pirates and the Caribbean. I will definitely be purchasing this rum again.

I have had some friends around and tasted both this (£30) and Ron Zacapa Centenario XO Solar Gran Reserva (£90), and everyone agreed that the El Dorado was a far better tasting rum with much more complex flavours despite being 1/3 of the cost of the Ron Zacapa! It is a bit on the sweet side with hints of toffee, vanilla, tobacco and a little wood. It is a truly wonderful rum and I would highly recommend it. Just please do not use it as a mixer, it is far too nice to be wasted in that role!

I drink this rum neat and preferably nicely warmed by the fire beforehand. No ice and certainly no mixer for me so I can appreciate the quality and flavours El Dorado deliver.Lovely smooth yet rich taste that leaves me reaching for another swig almost immediately.Ideal for my palate compared to other more expensive rums.Don’t bother with the 15 year old as the difference in tase just isn’t worth the extra £15.The only issue is that it’s become a very expensive vice to support!

Ordered it as a fathers day gift (I get my dad a nice bottle of rum each year), arrived well on time.He said it was one of the nicest Rums he has ever had and trust me this man gets around when it comes to drinks. Everything in this rum tastes like it is made perfectly. I was skeptical when I ordered it as people were just saying "you just have to try it for yourself", but now I fully understand. You do just have to try it for yourself. And you will be pleased about it

I have worked my way through most of the premium rums and until I discovered this rum I had felt that the Diplomatico Reserva was my favourite. But this is undoubtedly superior being a touch less sweet and with even more complexity of flavour. At the price - and I have tried some considerably more expensive rums, I think this would take some beating. As a gift for a rum aficionado - well if someone bought me a bottle of this I would be most impressed
