Tried this local rum in a popular city centre cocktail bar where the bartender recommended it and at first taste I really didn't like it. I had it on the rocks with a dash of lime and I thought the flavours were all over the shop. Intense root ginger followed by spicy pepper. Not my cup of tea I'm afraid. However the magic of this rum shines through when you mix it. Try adding a 35ml measure to a tall glass with 50ml of raspberry puree, a dash of lime, 150ml ginger beer and a hell of a lot of ice. Delicious. I love the concept of it - a spiced rum that is actually spicy - and hopefully small batch Scottish rum will be the next big thing after the success of small batch Scottish gins and obviously Scotch whisky.Apparently Brewdog are interested in the brand as well. Perhaps we can look forward to an Innis and Gunn style mash up of rum and beer in the near future?

I was gifted a bottle of this, and of all the spiced Rums I've had, this one is by far the tastiest. The first thing that sets it apart is the amazing aroma when first cracked open. There's a big Ginger/Cinnamon hit, with a warm peppery sweetness in the background. Speaking of sweetness, like all rum, this is sweet, but not cloyingly so. It's very smooth and easy to drink with any mixer, but I've found that a cherry cola works really well with the spicy nature of the rum. The delicate peppery after taste is fantastic, and will having you pouring another without a second thought. Very highly recommended, although not as a neat sipping rum. I think it's a little too full on for that, but each to their own.

I always buy dark rum but unspiced as I have never been keen on in, I drink it in a dark and stormy or jsut with coke as it does make the coke taste so much better.Went to a restaruant and the waiter convinced us to tey this Dark Matter stuff, we thoguht OK give it a go, wow! It has a real ginger taste in there that goes really well and then towards the end there is a vanilla flavour comes throught. This stuff is excellent and as a coke flavouring really hits the mark, but in a dark and stormy, ginger on ginger is jsut fantastic - if you like ginger. Not cheap but it is now my rum of choice, awful on its own but with mixers it is my preference now

It has to be stated from the offset that this is a veritable burst of amalgamated flavours which rinse the pallet a lot more thoroughly than your standard spiced lesser quality rums. Its distinct flavour shines through but is not for everyone. A real Marmite sipping rum that can be enjoyed with a mixer but really has enough character of its own to stand without diluting, even without ice. This is now a favourite despite the rather clinical looking bottle, although this design is all part of the charm. Once opened and tasted, if it agrees with your expectations you won't look back. Highly recommended to at least try.

Bought on the name alone, pleased to see prizes on the bottle, cap not a cork. So it not going to replace Diplomatico Reserva as my top rum but I will say it is interesting - much like its name sake promises to be. So, smells... strange or maybe fascinating, memory not so good.. Taste? Drunken raisins, maybe grass, maybe turpentine, but not unpleasant. Swallow? Spicy, somewhere more ginger than chilli. Lingers. The rest of the bottle may be..... interesting....Not so much a sipping rum. Need to find a good mixer. Ginger needs..... fruit? We shall see.Yes, yterrible sipping, great mixer. If you like ginger

Love the bottle and label design but that's as far as it goes. Jesus h it's spiced alright. This stuff makes my lips tingle unlike any other spiced rum I've had. The flavour is great but the spice is a tad overpowering. Normally I would praise a Scottish distillery as I'm Scottish but they need to tone down the spice in this stuff.I've been drinking rum for 20 odd years and even made the happy mistake of getting absolutely wrecked on brugal 151 in the Dominican Republic against the advice of the holiday rep.Not a connoisseur but consider myself qualified due to the 151 incident.

from the science side appealing to my more non stupid aspects and the nice sweetish and deep flavour are just right either as the correct way (straight and long) and mixed, dosent seem to go well with heavy flavours like cherry coke for example.its not over bearing and dosent kick your vocal chords into your nose, im not an experienced rum drinker so to say but i drink alot of brands and styles with all sorts of illegal things done to sacred rum (and like nearly all of them for their varying aspects) and it fits really nicley at about 73-77/100 (or 7/10 for boring people)

This is not a rum for drinking neat and as such it's a little expensive for something you're going to add a mixer too but hey, they're a small startup and I'm happy to support such an unusual venture. As the other reviews have described it is very heavily spiced, maybe too much, but mixed with some ginger beer or spashed over a slice of fruit cake it's delicious. If you're really feeling adventurous try flambéing a bit with some caramelised bananas, incredible! If you like this but fancy something a bit more easy drinking then I'd recommend

This rum was a bit of a shock at first as I'm used to drinking more vanilla tasting rum. After a few sips I really began to like the rum. It is so full of flavour and has a lovely cinnamon taste to it. I drink it with coke and a cube of ice. I found it was best to let it sit for a minute or two to let the drink settle. Is also nice on it's own as well but especially nice with coke. I like to be able to taste the alcohol in my drink so this rum is perfect as it has a very full, powerful taste to it. Will definitely be buying more!

Right, honest review - i tried before buying, it's not easily mixed. On first taste, it comes across overwhelmingly spicey, with clove and all spice punching you hard. once the taste buds are used to the intensity of the spice, you are able to taste what is an amazing blend and a good sweet rum underneath. After that it runs smooth and the spices continue to work together in a very pleasant way.Not your norm, probably not for everyone, but try it, and give it some time to show you what it is.Also, sexy bottle.

This is a connoisseurs rum for people with a well developed palate, the 1 and 2 star reviews for this are hilarious. Comparisins to krakan and sailor jerry. Its like comparing a Bentley and a lada. Yes this rum might taste "strong" to some but its actually full of lots of delicate flavours that are well balanced. This is my go to drink when i have guests or i want to send a spirt from Scotland to family and friends abroad. People get blown away by this theres nothing else like it!

Spicier than most other rums out there, definitely not one for sipping unless you're absolutely hardcore. If you're used to Morgan's Spiced or similarly flavoured rum, you're in for a shocker.Cola gives it a unique taste, preferable to ginger. Smash in a wedge or two of lime and plenty of ice and you're on to something phenomenal.Mix up a Zombie with this and an overproof, just don't do it on a school night.

An atom walks into a bar and asks for Dark Matter over ice.Whilst the barman is pouring the drink, the atom tells him that Dark Matter is molecularly engineered in Scotland. The barman turns to his manager and asks, is that true? The manager looks at the atom, and back at the bartender and says “_he makes up everything_”!The atom drinks the Dark Matter and gets _annihilated immediately_.

I like to be sure about a product before writing a review. I think being mid-way through bottle number four counts as sufficiently thorough research to justify a five star review. (Consumption spread out over a good few months rather than all at once, hence I'm still able to type). It is strongly spiced but in a very pleasant way. One of the few spirits I enjoy without anything added.

exactly as described very rich in flavour and aroma, all the smells of Christmas in a glass. We tasted back to back with a well known 'high street' spiced rum and that tasted like water after the Dark Matter. Worth every single penny and will most definitely be purchasing more, this truly is a spiced rum and the description is absolutely bang on.
