I knew there would be negative reviews on this page that mark Black Magic down for the very reason I approached this review full of satisfaction and praise for the rum. There is no right or wrong here, merely a personal preference. That is to say, I had a great time with this bottle. A great, great time. The flavour is very sweet and I can drink it neat with ease, which isnt always the case with rum. The 40% volume does its trick quickly and pleasantly too. But yes, this palatable sweetness will come at the expense of an artificial feeling to some. It has its strengths and weaknesses and is definitely more at home with coke than cranberry.I get the essences of vanilla and coconut from the taste and smell but it actually reminds a little of those toffee vodkas. You could drescibe it as My First Rum. This is aided by a distinct lack of burn when swigging it neat. The bottle itself is... okay. Nothing that gives it an edge. Likewise, the label is fine with some slight embossing for the rope around the logo. But while I get the look they were gong for, the matt finish here does look a bit like printer paper. As a whole, it doesn't really grab the attention and I can't help but feel that it looks like a Kraken imitator that's not willing to go that extra mile. As a gift for others I would be inclined to stick with that. For me, I am happy to go back for more of this.

Until I tried this bottle of Black Magic Spiced Rum it had never occurred to me that the Americans actually produced rum themselves – I usually drink Caribbean, Indian or rum from Mauritius. This spiced rum, with it's sailing galleon label suggests the Caribbean sea, perhaps pirates, to me – but not the USA! However this Black Magic spiced rum is produced and bottled by Sazerac Co. in Louisville, Kentucky – a State I normally associate with Bourbon and American Whiskey. As for this rum I found it to be pleasant enough, but nothing out of the ordinary, a little more bland than some spiced rums from the Caribbean and probably more suited to the taste of the American market. This is a sprit that can be drunk neat for sipping or with a bit of ice when it's warm – personally I would use it as a cocktail base in the summer or sipping neat by the fire in winter. The rum is presented in an attractive 70cl bottle – that is slightly fiddly to open – it is suitable for vegetarians and is the standard UK strength of 40% alcohol-by-volume. Currently around twenty-three pounds from Amazon this Black Magic spiced rum is decent value and if you are just looking for a versatile spirit for your cocktails this won't break the bank – four stars on balance.

Bloomin' lovely. This has a hint of liquorice and slips down a treat. But I know the question that everyone wants to know the answer to.Is it as good as Kraken?Plain answer is no. But... it's cheaper, and has an equally complex flavour. It's different enough to make me want to have both in the cupboard. Which is a problem for me as Kraken never stays in my cupboard for long. The other question everyone wants to know the answer to:Is it as good as Aldi's Sea Dog spiced rum?Plain answer here is Yes. Its about the same price, and in my opinion its very slightly better. But, again, I like 'em both so I'd be happy with them both in the cupboard. Indeed, this is how we have this arranged right now.The Aldi brand has one minor tick in its favour... that if you run out you can walk (stagger) to Aldi and buy another bottle right away, but Amazon will only deliver this next day. #firstworldproblem.

I love a good rum and have about 20-30 different bottles now. Having seen this come up on offer I thought I would give it a go having not tried it before. This is am american rum from louisville. The only other american rum I have had is Bayou, which by the way is one of the best rums I have had spiced and select are the ones to go for but you can only get them from the states. The colour is similar to the black spiced rums. It drinks well over ice but really is better as a mixing rum in my opinion. its pretty mild in taste probably somewhere in between Kraken and Captain morgans spiced in flavour. If you like supermarket spiced rums then this is one you wil enjoy. It sits at the same price point as Kraken and is probably as good,I would also like to recommend Pussers spiced and captain morgans black spiced if you are looking at this. But certainly this is worth a try

In my quest to find a spiced rum as good as Captain Morgans Black Spiced Rum (difficult to get in UK) THIS is is closest I've come so far. Not too strong in one particular flavor and very smooth. Compared to:Chairmans Reserve: Tastes like Christmas pudding, bad or good up to you, very good if a little one dimensionalDark Matter: Tastes Like McVitie's Jamaica Ginger Cake: as aboveRed Leg: Not too spiced, keeps it's rum taste so good for those that don't want overly spicedBacardi Spiced rum: like Red leg, maybe even more subtleDead Man's Fingers: Very nice similiar to Black Magic, only had one taste so far, further research requiredSo in summary Black Magic will be my go to when I can't get Captain Morgans Black Spiced which I think has some coconut flavor which is the bit I like.

I'm a big fan of spiced rums - Rumbullion, Red Leg, Dead Man's Fingers and you can never go wrong with Kraken - and this is a well-presented example from the US; the label art is nice and the bottle well shaped. Rums vary in terms of sweetness, spice and how deep down the spectrum of earthy flavours they want to go.Black Magic seems to veer just a bit too bitter compared to other rums. There's the basic sweet rum note but little else on top - vanilla, yes, but no brown sugar or fruit notes, no further spices, no cinnamon. There's also an overriding bitterness which prevents it being enjoyed neat, as I prefer, even with a splash of water.Mixed, it's a lot better, and perhaps this is needed to bring out some of its subtler tones and knock that bitter aftertaste on its head.

As a Kraken drinker, I was looking to broaden my horizons and try a different spiced dark rum. I plumped for Black Magic based on its Amazon reviews and, in terms of taste, was not disappointed. Smooth and easy drinking, I can heartily recommend this to fellow Kraken fans as (whisper it) this may actually trump the mighty leviathan when consumed neat or over ice. Where it loses marks is in its presentation. The bottle design is nothing short of shocking. With its plastic (?!) screw-top and wide mouth, everytime you pour, your precious rum runs hopelessly down the outside of the bottle. I would recommend either decantering the lot to ensure minimal loss when pouring or swigging direct from the bottle 'pirate style'to combat this. 5 star spiced rum, 2 star presentation.

Does anyone ever read the 4* reviews?! HahaSo I'm relatively new to rum... and bought this impulsively... probably based on the name, bottle and other reviews.I won't go into great depth because I don't feel like I'm seasoned enough to PROPERLY and fairly rate this drink: also the reason it has 4 starts from me...What I can say is that I'm about half way down the bottle.. drinking it with a splash of (Genuine/Full Fat/Classic) Coke. It's delicious.I wouldn't say it's sickly.. but it is sweet. I tried a sip neat before adding the mixer and to be fair.. it was pretty nice on its own.Vanilla and Almond are the flavours I seem to pick up... Almost marzipan. At £18, for me.... It's a nice drink which I've enjoyed.I will be buying it again. Highly recommended.

I'm not a rum connoisseur so I'm not going to write any fancy tasting notes or anything, but I am a bloke who loves his booze and I can tell you that this stuff is lovely! If you like your spiced rums, particularly the black variety (i.e. Kraken and Capt Morgan Black Spiced) then you'll love this. I think this is my favourite over the other two. I prefer to mix mine with Pepsi Max, and a squeeze of lime. I haven't tried Bristol Black yet, that is the only other black spiced rum I've seen and hope to get round to trying that soon.HOWEVER, please be aware that Amazon UK are not selling the 75cl, 47% abv version as per the product description (which is how it is marketed in the US).The one I received was the UK spec 70cl and 40% abv version.

Been trying a lot of rums lately, got this as a christmas gift and it didn't last very long! Has an almost caramel feeling flavour to it, i'm not an expert but I liked the taste as did all my friends and family so will certainly buy more. It goes well either on it's own or with a mixture, surprisingly good with Cherry Pepsi Max. (I'm aware i'm a philistine). The bottle has a pretty nice design with a nautical feel as you'd expect, the inside of the label slowly reveals some more nautical art as you drink with a little phrase on Skullduggery which is a nice touch. Not as flash as a bottle of Kraken or Rumbullion but is does the job. Has a screw top lid.Recommended.

To be honest, I initially purchased this for marketing reasons.a. Liked the design, the color of the image and the labelb. It was on Daily offers from Amazon at a discount so i thought to give it a go.Luckily, it proved to be a solid choice, and I do not regret the instantaneous purchase whatsoever!. It has a strong flavour and is also sweet. Beware as the sweetness might cover the alcohol content and you might drink a bit more than you would think! Would definitely say it is worth having on your display and sharing a glass with your close one to enjoy!PS: It also goes exceptionally well with a good steak, as i noticed! :)

After a little trying around this spiced rum has become my new favourite brand. While not being a perfumy mixture like some other spiced rums tend to be, this one still has a pleasent note of vanilla. And maybe some star anise and cinnamon I guess? Yet it still has the earthy undertones you would expect from such a dark blend. Despite the 40% it is dangerously mild. While being perfectly drinkable on its own, this rum really shines when it comes to mixing. I prefer it in hot drinks on these cold and wet autumn days, but it also shines in combination with soft drinks or soda. Definetly worth its money.

This is a rum that has flown under my radar until quite recently. The often touted "Kraken" seems to be the dark spiced rum that flutters about the lips of rum aficionados - but I think this is better. A similar dark spiced body is immediately palatable, yet gives way to more fragrant and lighter notes that offer more rewarding complexity than Kraken. I draw the comparison because they are very similar; yet the spice with this is just far more noticeable and dangerously easy to drink! I paired this with ice and lemon, as well as a generous dash of Bundaberg. Beautiful.

This is a very enjoyable rum, quite smooth and pleasantly creamy and flavoursome. This holds its own against many of the numerous rums I have tried, including some costing half again as much, and is well suited to drinking straight. It is certainly a rum I would seriously consider drinking regularly. Its one let down is quite minor, but it is still constitutes part of the enjoyment (or otherwise) of opening the bottle, and in this case it is otherwise, for the bottle has a plastic screw top, and it feels more like opening a bottle of medicine than rum!

This rum is supplied in a pleasant looking bottle without a gift box. It is imported from the United States and is produced and bottled by Sazerac Co., Louisville, USA.The flavour is rather sweet rather than spicy and quite treacly. It can be drunk on its own, with a mixer or as a part of a cocktail and its deceptively strong at 40% proof.I found it a bit too sweet for me but my wife rather liked it as she has a sweet tooth. This is a pleasant tasting Rum but may not be for everybody.
