I am an amazon vine reviewer. I am reviewing a 70 ml bottle of JURA 12 year old single malt Scotch whisky. The bottle arrived in a well-designed gold cardboard sleeve with a metal top and bottom. The back of the sleeve provides a brief background of the Jura brand. It describes the location of Jura off the west coast of Scotland with a population of only 2,000 – with only one distillery. I have been around the island in a RIB boat a few years ago.I like the comment that the bottle design was conceived to be robust and withstand transporting the bottle all over the world. One design feature is that the whisky is made in very tall stills.I am not sure how that affects the distilling process. The whisky is first matured for 12 years in ex Bourbon barrels from the USA. Then, after the 12 years, I think, – the aging process is completed by transferring the whisky into aged Oloroso sherry casks. I am no whisky expert, but I don’t know how many other distillers do this 2 step aging method. The bottle itself is nicely shaped at its waist – my word – to enable me to easily pick the bottle up. A foil seal protects the cork. The foil seal was easy to remove. The cork itself fits very snugly into the neck of the bottle. On removing the cork I detected a very pleasant aroma! I used a single 25 ml measure to pour the JURA into a whisky glass – which just happened to be a whisky glass I bought in Scotland. I swirled the whisky around the glass and inhaled the vapours – a very pleasant experience. After about a minute, I took a tentative little sip. Very smooth!Over the last week we have enjoyed the single measure of whisky on alternative days – trying to ensure that I drink responsibly. (See label for advised weekly units) During this week, we also tried the JURA with a 25ml: 25 ml whisky to water combination. On another day, just with the 25ml JURA plus a couple of ice cubes. All of these methods were superb. The JURA sleeve is very descriptive about the flavour of their product. This includes “smoky notes, aromas of chocolate, citrus fruit, salted bananas and brown sugar”My palate is just not educated to detect all of these shades of ingredients. But what I can say is that the JURA whisky is very smooth. I have tried a few whiskiesin the past. Some have hit the back of my throat with a burning sensation and some have been smooth. The JURA whisky falls into the latter very smooth category. The 12-year aging process has reaped great results. So based on the above review I am sure it comes as no surprise that from a none connoisseur like myself I rate the JURA aged 12 year whisky at 5 stars. I look forward to enjoying more of it during the autumn and winter seasons – enhanced by our wood burner!

I need to start off my declaring myself a new kid in Whisky town! I am more of a beer man than a spirits man.I do sometimes drink Whisky and other spirits at Christmas, but I am hardly an expert. I do have family members who are though; they tell me that the Whiskys I like are definitely not prize winners, just run of the mill and that I should try some properly aged examples to get the real taste - and I did get some small bottles on a tour of a distillery in Scotland a few years ago - and yes, those were very different, very smokey and with a harsh aftertaste. I have never really bought more. So, up on Amazon Vine pops this little beauty and its time to leave behind Whisky-Plonk and have a fresh try.I have not regretted it.I tried a single glass last night and I got a suprise, a subtle mix of flavours. Overall, it's pretty smooth, none of the harshness that put me off after my previous experience, an impression of different flavours linger, maybe cocoa or coffee and just a tiny hint of smokiness that pleases rather than makes you screw you face up! Lovely colour and the packaging sets it off nicely.I'm still a beer man, don't think I will ever major on spirits, but certainly I will be downing a glass of this every now and again for as long as it lasts, and perhaps lay in another bottle or two for Christmas visits of Whisky loving relatives to show off my new-found refined taste in Whisky :-)

It seemed un-neighbourly not to share this around and so after a little gathering there was much delight when the bottle of Jura appeared on the coffee table. Our little tasting group ranged from a 'so-called expert' to 'I dont really drink whisky but I'll give it a go' with a few in between. The Isle of Jura Distillery Co claims, 'an aromatic fusion of coffee, ginger spice and a hint of chocolate; followed by caramelised peach, chewy liquorice and candied orange with a hint of sea-spray and smoke'. Quite a mouthful!Surprisingly, we got several of these flavours across the 'team' but the liquorice and sea-spray passed us by. This is not quite a full-on Islay with a massive peat-fire aroma even though Jura is its neighbour. There is a lovely hint of sweetness that comes through at room temperature. Even the whisky agnostic agreed it should not be taken with water. General consensus was that it was a very good quality whisky giving excellent smokey/sweet flavours without breaking the bank. After that everyone got a bit giddy. It looks the part of a high-end, single malt whisky. Protective and informative sleeve, whilst the bottle has a robust, flask-like design. This would make an excellent gift or addition to a whisky 'collector'. It is much closer to an Islay in taste than a Lowland or Speyside whisky.(Amazon seem to be lumping together Jura reviews; this review is of 'Jura Seven Wood')

I don't really "speak whisky", so this review will be written in layperson's language. The Jura 7 wood single malt is reportedly aged in a range of barrels made from different woods, hence the name, and this is intended to give it a distinctive taste. I was very pleasantly surprised by this whisky, having read some indifferent reviews online before trying it.There is a certain sweetness to the taste, initially, and then a more complex taste follows. I couldn't pinpoint the seven wood types, but that's not necessarily a bad thing - unless you are looking for a particular woody character in your dram. The after-taste is very pleasant and lingers in the throat quite nicely.I would recommend - if possible - trying a measure of this in a bar before splashing out on a whole bottle. It is very Marmite-y (without tasting remotely of Marmite, of course), in that it will divide opinion quite markedly. A whisky with a personality that you'll either love or loathe. I love it, and find myself returning to this bottle whenever a tot of whisky is called for.The presentation box and bottle are very attractive as well - again, that may or may not be important to you. It would make a nice gift, as long as you knew the person you were buying it for, and their taste in whisky.

If I had ever compiled a ranking of single malts, Jura would have come very near or at the bottom. To my taste it always seemed to have much too much of a marine quality for my liking - seawater, seaweed, iodine, as though the 'terroir' of the coastline infused it to an extent that just isn't present in most other Islay and island whiskies (with the exception of Bunnahabhain which also seems to present this marine quality and would also have been very near the bottom of my list). I still have an unfinished bottle of Jura Superstition lurking in the back of the drinks cabinet which Mrs E. L. Wisty, bless 'er, bought me for my birthday two or three years ago. This however is a very different beast and a pleasant surprise indeed.Smooth, with caramel and the faintest tinge of flavours of chocolate and coffee, a whisper of smoke, and a long finish. I don't seem to be getting the sherry from the finishing casks sadly. I did find that if left in the glass too long it does seem to noticeably develop a bit of the iodine quality which afflicted the earlier Juras - don't neck it, but in savouring it don't leave it too long either; pour a single and then another single later rather than a double straight off would be my recommendation.

With anything you consume, taste is always going to be subjective and what works for one may not necessarily work for another. I have always found that whisky is one of those drinks that can divide opinion quite significantly, but I have to say that this Jura12 year old has both me and my friends mostly in agreement.First up, the flavours and I was certainly getting a hint of coffee and chocolate but only fleetingly so. The more pronounced flavour for me was walnuts, and old walnuts at that, not in an unpleasant way mind but that I kept being reminded of old furniture when sipping this. The one thing I did find was a lovely balance between the sweet and then the smokey aftertaste. Why not five stars, well as I said taste is subjective and while it's a pleasant example of the whisky craft, it's not among my favourites. That said, this is definitely one that I’d be happy to offer my more discerning whisky drinking friends, and I’ll also be happy to replace it with more of the same when it runs out, which is as good a recommendation as I can give.

I was quite surprised at this whisky: I think I was expecting a much stronger, smokier whisky, but this impressed me with its subtlety and smoothness. It's a great, easy-drinking single malt, it's almost as if the distillers had gone out of their way to create something that would appeal to a knowledgeable whisky conoisseur but would also be approachable and drinkable enough to be enjoyed by someone who perhaps doesn't have much experience of single malts and wants to try something that isn't too eye-watering (either in taste or in price!).I found I did need to loosen this whisky up with a splash of water to get the flavours to really come through, but when I did there is a really pleasant sweetness (from the bourbon and sherry barrelling), which stops it from being too smoky or difficult. The flavour is quite mild, so don't expect anything too punchy; it's a good drink to sip after dinner or to accompany a chat with a friend. The whisky comes in a lovely presentation tube so would make a thoughtful gift for a whisky fan.

I was intrigued to try this as it’s been a long time since I last tried Western Isles whisky (for good reason…) the last one I bought was a multi-award winning, so I figured I had to try it… and it was disgusting; it was so overpoweringly smoky it was like licking the bottom of a dirty ashtray. I couldn’t figure out what those judges must have been, year after year! …and those were in the days I smoked cigarettes.Hence, I had a little trepidation in ordering this and I’m very happy to say the smokiness is barely noticeable and even then it’s only a an aftertaste. As for the rest of the overall flavour, it’s quite a light malt and I would have preferred it the sherry notes had a more noticeable flavour,I still think I have a taste preference for the Highland or Speyside whiskys but this is okay too.The cork-top bottle looks great and it’s nicely presented in its card and tin topped and bottomed packaging, so it won’t be out of place if given as a gift.

I have had 10 year old Jura, and 16 year old, but not 12. 10 is a bit fiery, and also quite basic. 16 is quite sophisticated, and they have several 'manifestations' to jazz things up. Not surprisingly, this 12 year old Single Malt is in between the two! Jura has never quite reached the single malt whisky heights, but this is a creditable, mid-range effort.Personally, I cannot taste the sea or peat in this whisky, as one usually expects with an Island malt. For many people this will be a good thing. Many dislike the phenolic and the peaty (as manifest in the Islay malts in particular.) It's warm on the palate, more suited to after-dinner than before. I can just taste a bit of saltiness in the aftertaste,an aftertaste that lingers less than I would like, robbing it of a fifth star. However, since the first effect is quite sweet and floral, that tiny tang at the end is pleasant.

The 'Seven Wood' motif is a nod to the 7 American (ex bourbon) and French oak barrels this nectar is aged in . You can feel the love that has gone into making this beauty by one of Scotland's most famous distillers. The very attractive copper coloured topped presentation case promises a treat and the whiskey inside doesn't disappoint.I was already a fan of Jura when I opened this 12 year old single malt. On first try I was taken by the lovely , rich aroma and then, after much anticipation, I was rewarded by a smoky and more complex taste than the Jura I was used to.Though even those with the most refined palate might struggle to identify the coffee, ginger, peach, liqorice, chociolate and (yes)sea-spray that the makers claim this evokes, but by goodness whatever you call it this works for me.It is suitably expensively-priced but worth it for the true connoisseur.

My bottle differs from the above - Amazon Vine sent me a bottle of Jura Seven Wood single malt scotch whisky, which is actually listed as about £8 more expensive than the Jura 12 year Origin whisky-so all good.I’m not really a whisky fan to be honest as I don’t really like spirits that are highly concentrated, like whisky.I have however, nearly finished a full shot glass of this as I am typing up this review and it is growing on me somewhat.Firstly, this whisky has an alcohol content of 42%,if you are feeling cold before drinking this it will instantly warm you up.It has a strong, concentrated smell, and a slightly oaky taste. This whisky is from the Isle of Jura and has been shaped by seven separateoak woods-hence the name of the whisky.Professionally presented in its own Jura box with a metallic lid and base.

Whisky is one of those things I'd like to enjoy and savour but every time I try it just burns and I am put off. Not this Jura 12 Year Old Whisky though! It is a different league to the whiskies I've tried before (including some expensive ones). It is smooth and mellow. There is no burn just flavour. I found it sweeter to the palate than any whisky I've tried before. It really is class. My husband, who has more whisky experience than me and enjoys whisky, says it's very sippable indeed. The bottle is really appealing in design to me and it comes in a lovely carton. It would certainly make a great gift. I'm impressed.

I had the pleasure of being able to compare this against the 18 year aged whiskey. Surprisingly, the difference was not a matter of improving on the lesser-aged one -they were two very different taste experiences, each with their own merits. The 12year aged whiskey is peaty and a little smoky. It doesn’t have the full caramel flavour of the 18 year aged whiskey, but is still rather lovely. The colour is a light-to-medium natural oak, and the aroma is peaty with a hint of smoke, sweetness and iodine. Very smooth.Excellent stuff.

Scottish whisky seems to have gone through something of a change recently. My other half has now sworn off it. For a 12 year old, this was mercifully smooth tasting. However it is incredibly woody...like chewing tobacco, I suppose. I don’t particularly like it myself (I can’t stand oakey tasting wines). I also don’t smoke so the flavours rather gallop through. I also cannot stand blended Scotch, so this is an improvement on that. Ultimately it might please some...it is certainly distinctive.

I actually got this at the same time as the 18 year old version, and tbh I prefer this one. There is less of that harsh alcohol vapour with the 12 year old when compared to the 18, and it still has a lot of the same flavours to it.It is quite fruity on the nose, and when tasted it is nicely sweet and fruity. This is definitely a drink I could enjoy after a hard days work. It does have a little bit of smokiness to it, but it isn't too strong and there is a hint of spiciness to it as well.
