My mixed breed Beagle/Terrier weighs 30 pounds. Her back measured 19 inches so I bought the 20 inch coat. It was way too big. I thought it would work anyway by cinching up the belt, but I let her run free for about 5 minutes on my 9 acres and she got so tangled up in it that I had to literally cut the coat off her back.So then I bought the 18 inch version, which fits much better. But the coat has several flaws, all mentioned by previous reviewers. The belt buckle is sewn on upside down and it hard to buckle. I have to twist the belt to make the buckle right side up, which buckles easier but is still very stiff, a cheap plastic buckle. The belt does not stay tight--it loosens and that makes the underbelly part sag.The rear straps are useless--I cut them off. Snow gets under the chest/belly part and the fleece gets wet.On the plus side, my dog likes this coat and prances around in it. Except for the buckle, it goes on quickly. It keeps her warm while going outdoors to potty. It will get us through this terrible cold spell currently on-going in the Midwest.I don't see how it would work even for walks, due to the strap loosening. I don't think it's safe for letting the dog run free--too big of a chance of getting tangled up on something.I will use this for the current cold spell, but keep looking for a better overall coat. I think this coat is way overpriced. An $80 coat should be perfect, not have all these issues.1/6/18 updateI have changed my review from 2 stars up to 4 stars. This coat did a great job of getting my dog through a stretch of bitter cold weather. At the worst it was -18 degrees out with -35 wind chill when she went out in the morning. I particularly like the way the coat covers her neck and also her chest area. She was just going in and out for potty breaks, not spending any extra time outside, but still, we got through this period without her catching cold. When she came in, she wasn't shivering very much. Without a coat, she would normally be shivering a lot at much warmer temps than this.So I felt I had to upgrade my rating. The buckle is a real pain in the neck, hard to undo, especially for older hands. And the strap does not stay pulled tight. But the insulation and the overall coverage of the coat is excellent.12/16/20 updateWell, now my review is up to 5 stars. This coat has gotten my dog through several winters. I am so grateful to have a coat she is happy to wear and that keeps her warm. All the little details that bothered me at first don't even matter now. What matters is this coat keeps her warm and dry. The coat has held up so well, it still looks new. Because she is 13 years old now, her hair is thinner and she needs more help. So I think I'll get her the Hurtta extreme warmer coat as well, which appears to have a liner to reflect body heat. But this summit parka is still great for most days. Thank you, Hurtta, for making a great coat and helping my dog.

I have a smallish (22 lb) dog who hates being wet and/or cold. Since we live in the Pacific NW, there's a lot of rain and it's cold in the winter. He has very short fur with no undercoat. Even though he's active, he's also small and it's hard for him to keep warm. He likes to poke under every bush along our walks, no matter how wet. We walk about 5 miles/day, mostly on pavement but sometimes on trails. He's not a dog park kind of guy and he's always on a leash. The Hurtta Summit Parka was expensive, but it's been worth every penny. My dog's measurements: 14" back, 20" chest, 15" neck. I bought the size 14, and it fits him perfectly. Both the top and base of the neck can be tightened, and there's a ton of room in the chest buckle to adjust either bigger or smaller. For those of you with dogs that have "unique" builds, as mine does, I suggest ordering based on the back length. Be sure to watch the video so you see how to measure. It's from the withers to the tail, not from the base of the neck. If between sizes, order up. The back length can be shortened.Pros:- It's very well made and very sturdy.- Even in pouring rain, my dog stays warm and dry under the coat.- The back access slit for the harness clip is in exactly the right place. It has a flap over it which keeps the harness dry.- It's incredibly adjustable.Cons:- The back buckle was on upside down. It was annoying, but easily fixed by simply removing it, turning it over, and threading the strap back through.- I find the buckle hard to squeeze enough to get it to release. To be fair, I have arthritis in my hands that makes it difficult to pinch hard. I'm hoping it loosens up a bit. Others might not have this problem. It's certainly not a deal breaker because everything else about the coat is great.- My dog hates the elastic for his rear legs. The coat stays put well enough without, so I just don't use them.

My dog, Charlie, is a lean lab/hound mix at 35 lbs with especially short/thin hair around her legs. I bought her this parka after I noticed her shivering after about five minutes outside, even with a cheaper fleece-lined jacket from Pet Smart, when the temperature fell below 35 degrees. This Hurtta parka is a high quality product--it kept her warm for upwards of an hour during our Christmas day hike when it was 28 degrees outside. Charlie loves wearing it too--she'll stick her nose into the parka so I can slip it over her head! Besides keeping her warm in subzero temperatures, it's easy to put on, feels comfy, gives her the freedom to move around, and looks adorable to boot.I love how the cherry pink pops against her black coat. Using the measurement instructions, I bought her an 18" parka, which fits her length-wise; the chest strap is extremely adjustable, as is the area around the neck, but not as much. There's also an opening for a harness, though we don't use that. The only downside is that Charlie didn't immediately take to the straps around the legs. Since she had never worn anything vaguely near her butt before, on her first walk using the parka she stopped every once in a while to lick her butt as if to lick the straps off. She's gotten more used to the leg/butt straps now, but unless she's playing in the dog park, where she rolls around like a maniac, I don't use them because the parka stays snug during a walk/jog/hike without them. I also don't put the straps on her until after she's pooped--don't think they would interfere with the, uh, excretion process but don't want to risk it.Summary: excellent quality, fit and style.

To start I ordered a size 50/20 (cm/in) have a 3/4 blue pit 1/4 lab mix, so he's very broad in the chest with pit musculature but long legs of a lab, 66 pounds and his back stands about knee high and plays hard enough to break the zipper on the last 3 jackets we tried. His measurements:Neck 19"Chest 30"Back length 22"Pros: First impression was that Hurtta really put a lot of time into quality of design, stitching, and fabric when I was unwrapping the coat. The insulation is fantastic and has a nylon outer with fleece sewn inside and lots of air gap to retain heat while being light weight and thin.Heat retention is INCREDIBLE. This is better built than a lot of human coats. Seriously. The no zipper /chest harness and buckle design holds strong even when playing hard. It ant be beat, I'll never go back to a zipper after this. The leg stirrups are a great additionCons: price, but it's worth it. So this is not really a con but $80 for a dog coat you're unsure of is a big leap especially since the sizing can be confusing.Sizing in general was a challenge for my puppy because he skates too big for a 55 but at the limit of a 50. Overall the 50 works well because I didn't want to go with the 27" neck on a 55 when he has a 19" neck, but losing the 2" on the back length means the stirrups are a bit uncomfortable for him so I don't use them. Regardless, the coat stays in place perfectly ell without them.Overall: aside from the discrepancy of matching back length to neck size I am very impressed with this parka and would highly recommend to any dog owners. The quality of craftsmanship and design far outweigh the slight cons.

First of all this jacket is the best I have ever purchased for my pooch. Usually, if I order something for him, it doesn't fit, it is not quality or I just do not like it. That is not the case here! It is easy to get on and easy to adjust to fit the dog's particular body size and shape. I read lots of reviews and questions and many were about sizing. The sizing is easy: follow the guidelines that are clearly stated on every product hurtta sells!!! However, the back length is the most important size. Measure properly, order the correct size! The neck and waist are adjustable. There is one thing I'd like Hurtta to change (and am sort of surprised they haven't already taken care of this). The waist cinch is attached to a clasp but the clasp is sewn on backwards. I had to open the seam and flip it around and sew it back on and now it works fine. I understand they are trying to have the end of the reflective waist tape show, but the clasp ends do not work as well the way they have it. Also, the lump of the clasp is on the dog side rather than on the outside and this could poke into your dog. Furthermore, once the clasp is attached to the other end (while on your dog), you can not tighten the girth easily. You have to either detach the clasp, tighten and the reattach or pull it up away from the dog (making it looser even though you are trying to make it slightly tighter)and cannot cinch it down easily. Anyway, it literally took me 3 mins to flip the male end of the clasp around and resew it. I love this jacket. My dog loves this jacket. Get it!!!!!

Firstly this is the first review I’ve ever written on amazon and I literally buy stuff multiple times a week but I LOVE this dog jacket so much I had to leave a review. I ordered 3 others of the same brand since after extensive research this brand is clearly top quality. The others didn’t fit well since my dog Clyde is a Sussex spaniel and they are quite a challenging shape :) I ordered the 20 inch size. Clyde is about 40 lbs and just like the breed description he is long, level and low meaning very long body and short legs. He LOVES to play o it side as much as possible no matter the weather so he uses his jacket daily and it’s held up fantastically well, it’s like new.The biggest PLUS is how easy it is to put in on and take it off. All the others I tried were a bit more involved some were very involved this goes over his head and clips underneath and done, SO EASY! It has elastic loops for the back legs, I assume to keep the jacket in place and I tried using them initially but found I didn’t need them at all and Clyde seems to prefer not to have them on. I’m sure he would have gotten used to them but like I said for him I haven’t found them necessary. Lastly the coat is super versatile, my other dogs is significantly taller and weighs about 60lbs I tried the coat on her just to see if it fit and it fits her perfectly too! I attached two photos of Clyde wearing the jacket and the last one is Bonnie, his big sister wearing it too. Hope this is helpful to others since I found it difficult to find the right jacket so wanted to share

Bought this for my pitbull to hike in the White Mountains in winter and it has overall been excellent. I bought a size 24 which admittedly was a size too big. A 22 would have still worked but this jacket is incredibly adjustable due to the cinch above the tail. I was concerned initially that the chest part would be too tight or rub because she’s a pitbull and tiny in the waist but huge in the chest. Definitely not an issue. The arm holes are cut generously and the chest and belly part of the coat is large enough that it wrapped well around her to keep her covered. Definitely size up if your dog is borderline for sizing because the tail cinch and generous buckle cinch will keep it from being too overwhelming.I recommend cutting off the elastics on the insides of the flaps over the thighs. They were big on my girl and caused rubbing issues and just got coated in ice anyway. So to combat the flappy-ness of the jacket we just cinch it down well around her waist and tie a lose knot in the buckle. Holds well all day. Kept her warm and warded off shivering on several summits well below zero as long as she was moving. Next year I think I’ll buy the extreme warmer to go under. It compresses and rolls up fairly small considering what it looks like when you hold it up, which is excellent because I refuse to carry more than a 20l pack for a day hike. Excellent parka. Worth every penny if you’ve got a dog with very little fur who has an active winter lifestyle.

This coat is AMAZING. Waterproof, durable, and highly customizable fit that actually stays on the dog! I live on the coast of New England, which means windy rain storms and blizzards that my dog can’t wait to go out and play in. The key features for me are the waterproof fabric and the elastics on the inside of the back legs - the rear portion of this coat STAYS ON and snug against her hind. The wind can’t blow it around like other coats I’ve tried. My dog is also close to the ground, so the design of this coat also covers her chest for extra warmth. My dog is a beagle mix who can be hard to fit coats for. She’s 23 lbs and a slender build, so coats that were long enough for her were usually too big around the waist. This coat fits perfectly when I cinch the waist strap almost all the way. The elastic cinches around the neck and at the tail allow me to adjust it even further to prevent rain or snow being driven underneath.I also have the rain coat made by this company, and it’s equally amazing with the same features (just not lined for warmth). If you want a coat that actually performs well in bad weather and isn’t just some cutesy fashion statement, go with Hurtta.

This jacket is great. A little pricey but worth it. I originally ordered the Cherry in a 24". Cherry is more raspberry and not the best color, in my opinion, for a boy dog. So, I also ordered black in a size 24". I wanted a brighter color but black was $17 dollars less in that size. Can't beat that with a stick. So black it was. The accent color, as someone else mentioned, was yellow and not teal. That's okay though. My dog Elvis is an Amstaff mix and between 70 and 75lbs. All of his others jackets have velcro in the front and his superman chest kept busting out of them. This jacket is great. Really easy to put on over his head and then strap about the belly.Although some times he tries to bite at it when I am putting over his head. But overall super easy to get on and off. His measurements were Neck: 21" Chest: 31" and Size/Length: 24". So I got him a size 24". It fits pretty nicely. He probably could have gone a size down but this is fine too. It has tighteners around the neck, chest and near the tail where you can bunch it up some if too long. Also, I don't use the leg straps and it stays down just fine.

This is a great coat for active dogs. It's been too warm for my Australian Cattle dog. I think it would need to be low single digits for him to want to wear this coat. My beagle wears this when it's below freezing. He loves it. He goes through the snow, buck brush (has long sharp thorns) no problem. Through deep snow it does get under his chest but I think every coat has that issue. He's worn it in the rain for a 30 minute walk and it kept him dry. The coats fit my dogs differently. This has been the case with other coats too. My cattle dogs gets more coverage and the coat fits like the pictures falling over his hind end. On my beagle the coat stops right at his tail. It's the right fit for him.He doesn't mind the leg loops at all. The coat is very durable, warm, easy to get on & off. I think my dogs love it too (well, Beagle so far since my cattle dog only wore it once and I think he was too hot in it. He loves the snow/cold. He wouldn't like Australia!). My dogs are 13, but still very active. At younger ages they wouldn't want a coat unless it was 2 degrees.

My dog loves to go on long walks where she can sniff to her hearts content no matter the temperature or conditions. Other jackets I've tried often had velcro closures which would get filled up with snow and then would lose it's grippiness defeating much of the purpose of having a coat on her at all. As a hound mix, she's doesn't have a thick coat of her own which gets tough in New England winters. This coat is very well designed and made. The fact that it is a single buckle closure makes it easy and quick to get on and off. The coverage of her belly as well as her back legs and neck keeps her toasty warm no matter how long we are out.The coat is clearly designed for active dogs and has great coverage without being restrictive to her running around like a maniac. When we walk, I use a harness on her, so the fact that this one also has an opening on the back to connect a leash to her harness was a huge bonus since virtually all of the others I looked at didn't have this feature.I would highly recommend this coat if your pooch loves to be out in the snow.

I bought this for my Golden Retriever who is 95lbs and measures 23" neck 35" chest 26" between shoulders to tail so I bought a size 26, I'm always so hesitant about ordering things on line but this is a really nice coat and it fits him with some of room to grow (hes only a year old so I'm sure hes not done growing). It has an adjustment down the middle of the back for adjusting the lenght and also for around the neck. Its really easy to put on covering the chest and the strap comes around the chest and buckles over the back. There are also elastic straps to hold down over the back legs(although I never use them). A little pricey but made really well, fits great, and really easy to get on and off.If I would say anything negative about it, it would be that I'd like to see a little more reflective material on it, But after I turned a flash light on it I was impressed how reflective it was, even the adjustent cords glowed. Would highley reccommend this coat

I LOVE this jacket. My Lab-mix weighs about 50 pounds. She is part Pointer, and part Whippet. So, she has a very high stomach, and a very low chest. I used to buy cheap jackets for her, but the velcro wouldn't hold after a couple months, or the jacket would tear easily. I used the measuring chart, and called the company to confirm, and this fits her very well. The great part for me is that it secures really well, and won't fall off, or get dragged off her when she runs through the woods. It covers her hind end better than any other jacket I've had, and her neck stays covered when I extend the collar part. I've washed it a few times in the washing machine, and it looks and feels new.My dog goes with me to work throughout the winter here in New England, and is out in the rain, snow and cold with me. This makes her comfortable instead of forcing her to stay home. I ordered the 20 inch size.

This is a really wonderful jacket, warm and waterproof! It is very easy to put on, the single strap makes it really secure, elastics keep the back in place around the back legs, and the adjustable cords above the tail and at the neck give a custom fit. The jacket covers as well as any jacket could. It wraps around the dog with sides that come well down over the haunches without getting in the way, and there is a flap that covers the chest giving additional coverage and therefore protection from water spray. A lot of thought has gone into the design of this jacket (there is an opening for a leash to attach to a harness - I cannot think of anything they forgot or any way it could be improved)and the quality of the materials is exceptional. It keeps my pit bull dry and warm in West Coast winter downpours. Outstanding value, particularly at the sale price!

I started to get poorly before Christmas so my mummy bought me one of these coats so that I could stay warm when we went out for walkies. I don't have to go to the vets so much now and I'm feeling a lot better. The coat keeps my fur dry and I don't get so dirty because the chest panel stops any splashes when I jump in the puddles. Mummy says it's really easy to wipe clean too - she hasn't had to put it in the washing machine yet. I got a new baby sister a few weeks ago and mummy bought her a matching coat so that we would look the same. Bessie's coat was quite big and mummy adjusted it so that it would fit her better and now that she is growing mummy can adapt it to fit her without having to buy a new coat each time she gets bigger.People smile at us when we go out on our walks and say 'what lovely coats'. Eddy the Collie.
