I have three very active Spaniels, two of which are working Gundogs. Sadly my cocker, at the age of 6, had a stroke in January. Whilst she’s now retired from working she is still very active and the stroke has had a very minimal effect on her overall health other than a permanent head tilt to the left.Recently, after months of being very capable when it comes to swimming, she nearly drowned. With her head tilt and being a lefty she got into a roll in the water that she couldn’t right herself from. Thankfully I got to her in time and she’s still with me.Now that she can’t work, one of her favourite things in life, I can’t deny her next favourite thing which is swimming. So after buying a mediocre life jacket I decided to research and came cross this product along with Ezydog DFD. Whilst the Ezydog product is very well made and looked to be perfect flotation wise I wasn’t convinced, with the lack of foam under the belly area, that it would be the right jacket. My concerns were that if Dee got into a roll in the water she would float upside down on her back and still drown. So I looked at the Ruffwear Floatcoat as the better, albeit more expensive, option with the floatation foam covering her underside too.I had initially ordered a size down, as advised by reviews if in doubt, XS. I had to send it back and was glad I did as the Small contained more floatation foam which put my mind at rest. The fit is perfect and the vest is extremely well made.Today Dee had her first outing on the vest, along with a foam collar that I made to support her head and neck, and I’m pleased to say that she has had a brilliant time swimming. The vest has kept her afloat without restricting movement on land or in water. All in all I’m very happy with the purchase and purpose of this vest.

I bought size Large for my 75 lb. 2 year old German Shepherd Mix. It fits great and I am so relieved knowing he is safer on the boat. He doesn't like swimming and panics. To help him, I risk him drowning me or at least scratching and bruising me. I am hoping he will get better in the water over time and if he doesn't, that is okay too. For now at least the situation is under better control for both my safety and his. 15 years ago I bought my first dog life jacket from Ruffwear in a size small for my 30 lb. Terrier Mix. She is thin and tall so I had to tighten the adjustable straps all the way for it to fit her. She wears it swimming in the ocean and in lakes. It is great to grab the handle and easily lift her out of the water and into a canoe or boat or onto the dock or into my arms. I also used the size small for my 30 lb. Boston Terrier who really sinks deep when he first jumps into the water. Boston's have a bulldog mix in them which means they have short dense bones and are often unable to float enough to swim on their own. Because he was shorter and bulkier in build than the terrier, I adjusted the straps to make the jacket slightly bigger for him. He thinks lily pads are solid ground and jumps out of the boat thinking he can go run wild in the woods. Fortunately I can grab the handle and put him back on board as he gets over the shock of his mistake. One warning is that if you have a leash attached to the vest and not the dog's regular collar, the dog can back out of the jacket, but it requires you and the dog to be pulling very hard away from each other and is rare. All my dogs have found the jackets to be comfortable and they run and play as usual with it on.

So, as you can see from the pics, I have a French bulldog and this review will be specifically for French Bulldog owners! When it comes to lifevests for French Bulldogs, this is the best one I have found! It has the most flotation material throughout and on the underside and under the head to support their head in the water. It truly does its job and keeps their heads out of the water (since that's usually why Frenchies can't swim, their head is too big and heavy to hold up while swimming lol).My only problem is that my Frenchie, Denise, is not a normal sized Frenchie and she is fairly small for her breed (about 15lbs full grown) and she has almost no neck and a tiny head (again, for her breed!Lol). So the neck flotation part comes up a bit high on her and I'm sure isn't the most comfortable. And she isn't overweight, so even on the tightest setting of the Small sized vest, it's a bit too big around her stomach. But we have to stick with a Small due to her barrel chest! The XS (at its largest setting) is just a bit too snug. But I don't believe that's any fault of the company's, I just have a weirdly shaped Frenchie ?. So I just want to warn you that that may be a problem for some of you as well! But overall, this is the best lifevest for French Bulldogs and I highly recommend it! They're extremely safe, keep the Frenchie's head out of the water, and cute!

Worth every cent! We have a 12 year old pitbull- she got the love of swimming from her Newfoundland mentor :) Several years ago she developed an ear issue that affected her balance, she'd run into walls- it resolved but apparently left her with some permanent damage. I did not know that and took her to a lake where she promptly jumped in, got water in her ear and started sinking in very deep water and I happened to have my baby on my back in a backpack- she was literally seconds away from drowning but I managed to save her and not put my baby in danger- but just by the skin of my teeth. Ever since then we've only let her in the water with a leash but that is very cumbersome and the leash can get caught on sticks under the water.Well, she's so old, I didn't know if I should invest the money in this for our latest camping trip- I thought she'll only be able to use it once. Bought it anyway...BEST PURCHASE EVER! She's about 80 pounds and the large was roomy, good fit, she was comfortable, looked pretty (if that matters), easy to use, lightweight, and she swam and swam all day long...even when she got water in her ear and got dizzy- she shook it off and kept going. It has a handle in case you need to haul the dog in and you can clip your leash on it as well. Seems very well made and sturdy.

I'm actually reviewing the SELLER, Animal Grace -Active Dog Outfitters. I needed THE swim jacket for the weekend after I ordered on a Sunday. I sent a message asking if they could get in mail straight away. They called me back THAT Sunday, had the Ruffwear float jacket in mail first thing Monday morning, in plenty of time for weekend event. They offer free shipping but not "Prime". Animal Grace Pet Outfitters is a local family business in the USA, if that means anything to you. Even though not Prime, I appreciated the level of service & would absolutely order from them again!!Jacket was a little too small, otherwise perfect. They were just as nice with the return process. Thus is long because sometimes you have to recognize excellent service, esp when competing with "the big guy"-Box Stores. As for Ruffwear Swim Jacket--I looked at all the big manufacturers. This one doesn't chafe or impede range of motion at all, perfect buoyancy (plenty high but not so much dog is unstable), Very high quality, he's actually safer and can move/swim significantly better in this than any of the cheaper jackets (and probably more expensive ones, too). Great protection against "Dry Drowning", makes swimming extra fun and secure for my German Shepherd!

I got this life jacket for my small terrier mix so that she can get in the kayak with me. It looks great and fits very well. It's not bulky or "frumpy" on her body. The outer material is fairly heavy duty... not thin at all, and the jacket seems well constructed. She got in the water and the jacket seemed well balanced, meaning her head was up and it did not appear to make swimming awkward. The handle is robust and great for pulling her out of the water. She's only 25 lbs, but I assume if your dog is a big dog then the bigger jacket's construction and strength would scale up (not sure). There's a ring to attach a leash under the handle. It's plastic and appears fairly cheap, so not sure about that on a large, strong dog that likes to pull. It won't matter on my little squirt. There's a spot to attach a beacon if your dog needs that. We do not need to attach a beacon, but it is still useful... I used it to attach a carabiner and then attached the jacket to my pack while hiking prior to kayaking. I do feel that the neck/chest portion is somewhat difficult to adjust, but no big deal. We've only used it once, so I will update the review if my opinion changes. So far so good! Can't wait for more adventures.

I was hesitant to buy such an expensive PDF (puppy flotation device), but he's my best friend so well worth the cost. I had purchased a much less expensive PFD when he was younger and it was a challenge to put on and he never seemed comfortable. The Ruffwear PFD is easy to put on (he actually eagerly slips his head through the front collar) and adjustment was quick and easy. It fits well, although when he's laying down the back sticks up making it look like it doesn't fit properly. The waist straps roll up and have a nice velcro strap to keep them rolled. The only problem is that the roll is a little big and sometimes when he pees the rear one gets a little wet.Not a big deal and as soon as he stops growing the strap can be trimmed to eliminate the roll.Sizing appears accurate. In the pics he is 4-mos old, weighs about 22 pounds and his chest girth is about 21". He is wearing a size small and the neck collar is as small as it can be and I had to lengthen the girth and rear straps about an inch to fit properly. There is still plenty of room for him to grow. The Ruffwear PFD is well made and promises years of service. I am very happy with this purchase.

Like many of you, I rely heavily on reviews and comparison shop before making that final decision. So I hope my review will be helpful to all of you. First of all. when I initially began looking for a 'life jacket' for my dogs first 'doggy swim' at our local pool, I intended on spending a lot less, but I was drawn to the features of this 'float coat' especially, the self righting buoyancy and the vest style, not too mention excellent overall reviews AND,the workmanship is exceptional! Also, I fretted over the correct sizing. My sweet dog is part Staffordshire terrier and approximately 90 pounds - we are working on slowly losing weight through exercise so, I like that the straps attached to the clasps are adjustable.I ordered the size Large and it fits. well. I did have to let out the straps a few inches. I highly recommend.Update: apparently I ordered the X-LG without realizing or was sent the wrong size not sure but it is noticeably too big only when I've pulled on it he almost slips out even with adjustments...what to do?

I’ve tried 1/2-doz different dog jackets—these are the best! They’re very sturdy, yet flexible. They allow my dogs plenty of under arm room —no chaffing. The clips are wonderfully designed with protective sleeves and tight Velcro loose to secure long strap tabs. The handles are strong. My girls swim some serious currents, and the jackets help them conserve energy when necessary, but don’t interfere with navigation. They’re in the water several times a week, and the jackets are holding out very well after a few months of heavy use.Sizing note: one dog fits L perfectly; the other (the white one in pix) measured between M/L, and I downsized b/c I did not want sloppy, but M barely closed around her chest.I exchanged for a L w/o any hassle, and it fits well. For her, the jacket could be a few inches longer—which wouldn’t be bad on the other dog, either —but the slightly short fit doesn’t seem to at all impede function. There are products out there almost 1/2 the price, but jackets are well the extra expense.

We are very happy with the float coat for our dog Nizzy. When we first put it on, she was like 'what is this?' but quickly forgot it was there as we began to play fetch in the water. She is able to swim with her float coat no problem. It helps to keep her head up so she doesn't drink as much river water which can upset her stomach. Its great to have the float coat for boat rides, so she can jump in with her humans and not wear herself out. We had no problem putting it on after the first time. Out pup is a yellow lab. Smallish - 48lbs. She is 27 inches around her chest. We went with a medium which fits pretty well - for a snugger (glove like fit) I would recommend the small. We love having the handle on the coat so we can pull her up onto the SUP, boat, pier - you name it! For a dog who loves being in and around the water, I highly recommend this product - doesn't take the fun away - allows the peace of mind of keeping your fur baby safe.

The quality of this Float Coat is amazing. I had looked at others from well-known sporting good stores, and they had nothing that compared to the quality and design of this one. It was recommended by many friends and my kayaking groups. The design of this FC is great for the male K-9s. It tapers towards the front of the coat. Many I looked at were too squared off and you could see that would cause a huge problem for the male dogs. It is easy to put on and we are ready to go! Now, we haven't had the opportunity to actually use it yet due to the season being at an end for us, but I have seen it in action. Even though our dog is a Lab and they are known for loving the water, being without a solid, safe PFD for any animal is a risk I am not willing to take. This makes me feel better to know that he is going to be safer when I take him out in the fishing boat and/or the kayaks. This is definitely worth the price tag!

XXS was sized perfectly for my 11 lb Havanese. I was a little concerned about the neck width because he was right at the top end of the measurement but girth seems to be more important. When it arrived I thought there was no way it would fit because it looked so small. I expanded the neck as wide as it would go and it slipped on easily. And I ended up having to tighten the neck. The waist straps are well designed because you roll up the excess strap and then Velcro it in place so that the excess never becomes an issue. We have taken our dog to the lake before and he loves it. He was always nervous swimming though. With this jacket on, he swam and swam and swam. He would jump off the SUP and swim to my husband's SUP.The extra buoyancy helped him with all the water weight in his hair. He would even go nudge it on the houseboat to tell us he wanted to go swim.

This life jacket is extremely well made. I bought the XL size & with just a few simple adjustments to the straps it was ready for my 110 lb. German Shepherd to wear right out of the box. It’s easy to slip on and off & to latch the straps, so there’s no struggling with a wiggling dog eager to get in the water. My dog didn’t react to wearing it, so I take that to mean it’s comfortable. The Red jacket is a handsome color & bright enough to spot the dog easily in water. There is a handle on the top to help lift the dog in and out of water & it also has a ring for the leash to be attached, which is an added bonus.I firmly believe you get what you pay for & while the jacket is more expensive than others,it is well worth the cost because this thing is made to last. I recommend it to anyone looking to protect your pup while they are in or around water or a boat.

I love all things ruffwear! Enzo my dog does too! This PFD makes it easy to lift your dog out of the water. He gets excited every time I get it out because he knows we are going to the water! My dog is 68lb and according to the size chart he was a large. I recommend sizing down. I did after buying a large which I couldn’t get a safe snug fit on my dog. The medium works great and is still roomy. I have to cinch it pretty tight. You can attach a leash to the clip under the hand grip. I have a 2 foot piece of parachord I pass through the handle that I use to hold him in if we hit any rapids. I leave it untied so if he jumps out he doesn’t have anything that would hang him up in the river.Makes my chubby adult dog enjoy the water more and be less tired. Side note, my dog wears a XL in ruffwears harness. Sizing down is recommended with the PFD.

High quality life jacket! My dog measured exactly in the middle of the dimensions of a Large, however it seems fit almost adjusted as tight as it can go without the bottom overlapping. This might be problematic in the summer when he loses weight. I expected it to be equal adjustment room both ways since he measured in the middle. Other than that it is perfect! My dog is 8 years old and loves to swim and fetch. He doesn’t know when to stop! I didn’t worry about him when he was a puppy, but now that he is older, it is a safety precaution to have a life vest and I want him to have the best. He has full range of motion and gets excited when he sees it now as he knows it means he is going swimming.I highly recommend this product! It is built to last and is designed with your dogs comfort and safety in mind.
