I bought this harness for my mom's pomeranian, who has knee problems (luxating patella) but who tends to be prone to LEAPING OFF things (i.e., the sofa, out of the truck, etc). So I thought it would handy to be able to just use the handle on this harness to grab her like a box of kitty litter and lift her into and out of mom's truck, if nothing else. I have two dogs myself, and the three of them comprise our little dog pack, and they're all roughly the same size. It's difficult to review this harness, because you see, I accidentally put two of these into my cart instead of the ONE that I intended to. No big deal, I'll just return one. But, while I had it I thought 'let me try this on my other dog Jack, just out of curiosity, and maybe I'll keep it.' Well, things started off great, the Small size fit my boy PERFECTLY straight out of the package with no adjustments needed at all. But, well, then things stopped being great, because when he had this one he refused to move. I walked outside, expecting he was following me, but then realized he wouldn't step down the one-step front porch, no matter how much I called and cajoled and pleaded. Eventually I went and grabbed him (yay, handle) and lifted him down to the ground. Then he just stood there looking super uncomfortable. Then he apologetically lay on the ground and refused to move. So anyhow, even though it looked really sharp on him and was a perfect fit, apparently somehow it triggered his possum reflex (similar to putting socks on a cat, and then they fall over like they're dead--hilarious, I know, but not practical). Perhaps he would eventually have adjusted, but I decided to save my $60 and return it. Put his old regular Puppia harness back on him and he was back amongst the living.ANYHOW, my mom's pomeranian, for whom it was intended, I will say I worried that this harness would prove to be too heavy and bulky for her. I measured her before purchase, and purchased the Small size (she's a large pom), but this harness will take a lot of pulling on straps to adjust them. And there's a lot of straps to this thing. But we did take it for a spin to the beach today, and even despite being halfways adjusted, she did well. I'm sure it's heavier and bulkier than she's used to, but she gave no appearance of really minding (beyond the first 5 minutes of wearing it, where she acted like she was being fit for a straight jacket, and seemed very solemn and sad about the whole thing) or noticing. And hopefully when it's properly snugged up to her, it will be even better. It was definitely handy being able to lift her in and out of the car, since she's not good at jumping into things, only off of them. I only just wonder if I could have gotten away with an X-Small, and it may have been more appropriate to her size. But I didn't want to take a chance.Still, the color is very pretty, and it's undeniably high-quality, and my mom seems pleased with it, and her dog seems alright with it too.

I purchased the XS for my 26# Basenji and it is a perfect fit. This is by far the best harness for controlling him that I have tried. We stay in a lot of different rv parks where other dogs are encountered on the way to and at the dog walk/poop area. He goes into whirling dervish mode when nearing another dog and this happens whether the other dog is large or small. I have tried a martingale collar which is not effective in controlling him. Various other chest and head harnesses which don’t seem to work or he is able to slip out of them. Nothing has worked in being able to stop the whirling- not training or other harnesses. This harness enables me to keep him in from whirling around or pulling so aggressively that he tears up the ground with his paws.If my efforts to control him are not as effective as required for the situation, I simply pick him up with the carry strap on the top of the harness and carry him away from the situation. He does not mind wearing the harness and having the carry strap makes it easier to load him into my truck or Jeep. He does not seem to mind being picked up this way and is not distressed at all while he is suspended or carried using the carry strap. He is absolutely unable to pull back out of the harness and if he balks at being pulled, but you still must have him go in the direction your are guiding/pulling him, you can do it without being concerned about the harness coming off.My only suggestion is for the manufacturer to beef up the nylon strap that connects the metal ring to the harness. In all other aspects, this is a well designed and constructed harness.I suggest that the manufacturer could provide a rain coat and fleece jacket that snapped or velcroed to the harness with the leash attachment ring hole placed properly. I cut a hole in existing rain jacket so the metal leash attachment could feed through the hole and the leash could be attached. Same for a warming jacket.Read and use the sizing chart for your dog. I was reluctant to order the XS for my 26# Basenji, just because nothing else I have ever ordered fit in an XS size. It fits him perfectly. Spend a few minutes when you fit the dog into it the first time and make strap adjustments that are not binding or overly tight. Putting the harness on each time is not difficult when you and your dog get used to it.My dog seems to like wearing it and has worn it all day loafing and on long hikes. The harness does nothing in terms of reducing his tendenancy to pull on the leash but normal check-tugs on the leash by me are now done knowing that it is not going to choke him like when using any type of collar.I don’t normally write product reviews except for items that I feel are exceptional in terms of value and fit for purpose. This is one of those products.

Back in March this year, my Boxer was diagnosed with osteosarcoma and had to have his left hind leg amputated. I knew that the harness he already had was not really suitable for him now, so I ordered one of these 'Ruffwear Web Master Harnesses' ' for him, which was recommended on the 'Tripawds' website. The harness has a handle on the back of it, which is useful for when he gets tired on a walk and enables me to help him and take some of the weight off his rear end and also, for when he needs to get in and out of the car, I can lift him.I also ordered a 'Ruffwear Brush Guard' for this harness, which fits onto the underside of the harness, and gives him more padding around his chest and belly area and also gives him some protection if he needs to lie down or is in longer grass, on a walk. I found that this seems to make the harness even more comfortable for him and seems to provide a slightly better fit when in place. The harness is excellent quality and very strong and secure when fitted. The only downside that I have found with this harness, is that it only has clips on one side, so that when you are putting the harness on, the dogs right front leg and head have to go in the harness first, before the rest of the harness can be clipped in place. This would be ok for a completely able bodied dog, but for a dog with 3 legs, you have to ensure that he is in the sitting position first, as he is unable to balance on 2 legs while this is being done. It would have been ideal if the harness had both a clip on the left and right hand side of the neck, so that no front legs needed to be lifted in order to put the harness on.My boy is 10 1/2 years old and is full of life. He does brilliantly on 3 legs and loves his new harness. He still pulls on the lead and is really speedy !! He plays with my younger dog and is still being 'naughty' at the age of 10 1/2 years ! He is on a Raw Diet and has his herbal supplements alongside this, to help him with his diagnosis and joints. I am so glad that I made the decision to go ahead with the amputation and it is very noticeable that he is not in pain anymore. I would highly recommend this harness for a rear leg amputee dog.

Heaven bless this harness, it's exactly what we needed for our houdini doggie. The belly strap is exactly what we needed so he can't slip out. And he's tried, believe me. We got a small harness for our adopted 40-lb. Australian Heeler/Cattle dog mix with severe separation anxiety. This boy...we've had to contain him for his own safety when we have to leave him alone. We tried all sorts of other harnesses that snug about the chest only, and we finally had to just go a bit more expensive and get this harness and it is THE answer. GREAT material/quality, secure clips and the straps don't loosen with movement/strain. The cable hook is thick and sturdy and has held up perfectly against pulling. The harness slips on easily enough—that's more an issue of frantic dog than harness design but the design is also great, just over the nose and right front leg through the one closed-loop hole up front. The top material that runs along the back/spine is stiff but flexible, just the right mix. The padding on the straps is great for under his chest and belly. No fabric folds or twists to cause discomfort. We can even lift him out of an overly excited off-leash-dog-park scuffle like a doggie suitcase. That's super handy, and it doesn't get any painful reaction from him, so the straps distribute the load super well. We finally feel relieved that we can leave him alone in a safe harness anchored in a safe place as we get him used to being alone. Trust me, we've tried it all (the lavender, the music, the tricks and advice, the medication even): we won't give up on this twice-abandoned shelter boy! He's forever home now, and this harness has seriously saved my nerves about him being okay when I get home.Another thing to note: as Midas was getting used to this new harness with the second/belly strap, he felt at first like he was impaired to move (silly guy) and I also noticed he wouldn't attempt going potty with the belly strap secured. So we started getting him used to the front of the harness and using the belly strap bit by bit. When the belly strap isn't needed, it's super easy to secure the strap in its clasp over the top on his back and he prances around just fine.

first of all, this is a really well made harness, and a great design. my only issues are in the execution of the design.my pup is on the larger size for his breed, but he is still a small dog. he's a rescue and has/had some bad habits and one of those was escaping from harnesses. i bought at least 6 different harnesses, and this is the only harness i've found that he -can't- get out of. the strap behind the rib cage ensures he can't escape, and i'm so thankful for it. that being said... i did measure him before purchasing, and bought the xxs. it *mostly* fits. it's a little tight around his mid section (the strap that goes behind his rib cage), which is extended as far as it can go,and the shoulders are a little loose (straps around the neck), which are sized as tight as they can go. if i try the next harness size up, the shoulders are way too loose (like i can fit another dog in there with him, kind of loose), but everywhere else fits great with room for adjustments if necessary. the only way for either harness to work is if i figured out how to make an extension for the xxs, or figured out how to modify the xs. both options will likely compromise the structural integrity of the harness, even if i do it well. you wouldn't think this would be a problem for small breeds, but he has some bad leash habits that have proved difficult to break (he darts after small fast animals and pulls hard when he hits the end of the leash). the general shape of these harnesses are meant for breeds with large shoulders (bullies, shepherds, retrievers, etc.), so be aware and measure carefully if you're buying for a small dog.side note: if you can manage some minor hand sewing, the straps can be pinched/folded and stitched (photo) to adjust the areas that cannot be sized any smaller due to design. the only problem with that is that it is no longer easily adjustable in those areas but it's still reversible. it has fixed my issue, but it would be awesome if i didn't have to make my own modifications.

14 years had and still using.. I bought the smallest size for my shih tzu some 14yrs ago. My eldest dog Belle is 15.5, now and still uses for walks. It pops over her head, the first strap i have to pop her leg through and it goes under her chest then and attaches to the other side strap. The belly strap just fit round her belly and again clip on her side. Neither dog has had any irritation from the straps as they are foamed where they touch sensitive areas. You can tighten or loosen as you wish. The handle on top has become more needed for belle in later years of her life as she needed help to walk over curbs as and steps. Once it was handy to swipe her up fast off the ground when a dog attacked her many years ago.Thankfully i got her quickly as i grabbed the handle and yanked her up. I have washed the harnesess in the sink with normal washing powder/liquad and let drip dry. The reason i am writing this review is that i need to buy another for new addition to the family. The price has difffered much since when i purchased those years back. I also bought the matching dog lead which i have to find again. I will highly recommend this harnesses, no way can your dog escape of the lead in this harness. The harness cannot come off. It has been the best buy for my dogs. Please note this harness is different from the front range which does not have the handle on top. I know my little dogs are not going up hills but the handle is handy to pick them up quickly as explained and the harness is more sturdy.Edit of review : the above review is based on the old design. I have just purchased the new design. The new version is lighter, however is not as padded as the orginal, hence i am disappointed. The orginal had a soft thick padding underneath the back of the harness plus the soft sponge on the strapes touching the belly is not as thick either. If you are able to try and purchase the orginal version, is far superior than the new version

I have a 6month old Border Collie girl, who I had been walking on another make of harness (also an excellent make) and, although she should not be able to back out of the harness, I was not convinced, as she can be quite nervous of new people and dogs (despite being socialised from a young puppy) and had come close to reversing out of it a couple of times. I already had a Ruffwear Webmaster Harness in Small, that I had used for one of my other dogs, so I tried it on her and it fitted perfectly (along with the Brush Guard Belly Protector). I have been using the Ruffwear Harness for the last couple of weeks now, and she seems much calmer than she was on walks (I think due to the more 'hugging'fit of the harness) and has not tried to back out of it once. She is still nervous when she meets people and dogs and is 'selective' of who she allows to say 'hello' to her and quite often will just sniff around or sit next to me while we are talking, but hopefully with time she will overcome this, as she is a really friendly girl once she knows you. The harness is very secure and obviously helps her to feel more secure while wearing it. I am lucky that she is not scared of traffic and does not try to 'herd' cars, bikes, etc, so at least I don't have to worry about that. She is a farm collie, from working parents and is very responsive and willing to learn, so hopefully with the help of the Ruffwear Harness, she will continue to improve and learn to trust strangers a little more (although I don't always think it is a bad thing to be cautious, as these days you hear more and more about dog thefts !) I love the Ruffwear Harness and Brush Guard for my Collie and I had also used one previously for my elderly Tripawd Boxer boy, so I can highly recommend them for both comfort and security, for both the dog and the owner's comfort that their dog will not be able to escape from it, which in turn helps to calm the dog. Highly recommended !

Never been so happy with a doggy product!!My almost 2yr old Dalmatian Merlin has been clever in his habit of slipping through harness’s since he was tiny and escaped from every single harness I’ve bought (too many!!) and after him backing out of one onto a main road and having to run across to catch a quick puppy when he was about 5months old I developed awful anxiety taking him out alone and not being able to walk him without a coat on top of his harness but with Summer coming and the weather warming I can’t keep putting a coat on him, googled “no escape harness’s” and this one kept showing up everywhere so came here & read the reviews on this, decided to give it a go despite the high cost (I’m self employed and covid hasn’t been friendly to me!) & risk of it being a waste of money but oh my god I’ve never been so relieved in my life!! I took him out yesterday and this morning after a quick garden test & I’m so happy I decided to try it! He also seems somewhat more comfortable & a little better with pulling so that’s great too! This means I can now go ahead with all the countryside & mountain walks planned near us all spring & summer without worrying he’ll slip back out of it and get himself lost or injured in traffic! Absolutely worth every single penny, will be getting one for our new Sprocker puppy when he’s old enough to go on walks and also an extra one for Merlin.I was wary of the sizing- his measurements came up at 27” at the widest part of his ribs so exactly between a small & medium but after seeing others’ reviews with similar size dogs on trusting the process and going for the smaller size I bought a small & at the biggest setting it’ll go it fits snug & comfortable! Super happy :D Will be buying a Medium too though for over time / when he needs a bit more room as he thickens with age!Came 3 days early too, not a bad thing to say so far ?? 100% recommend to anyone struggling with a Houdini dog!!

I was initially reluctant to buy this because of the price. Consequently I have probably spent the equivalent on inferior harnesses before finally investing in the Ruffwear Web Master. I have a dog who is an odd shape. Her head is smaller than her neck which means collars don't stay on. And she is the Houdini dog this harness appears to have been made for. With every other harness we have tried she manages to drop her head, pull back, give a wiggle and off it comes. So anytime we have a disagreement over which way we are going, or something spooks her, she wins the battle. Walking became quite a worry in case she got out of her harness and ran over a road. This harness adjusts at the front, middle and then critically, behind the stomach. The back section is fairly rigid and has a handy handle for picking the dog up. (I guess its designed for helping them over obstacles, but also very useful for having the final say when they want to go in a different direction!) This rigidity helps with preventing the harness from bunching up and pulling over the head when the dog goes into reverse. The back strap also prevents it from pulling off without the need to have it too tight. So the dog is comfortable - even when sitting - and safe. The first time we tried it on a reluctant walk my dog threw a bit of a tantrum. Picture the doggy version of a two year old in the supermarket after being told, "no you can't have sweets". She tried her usual backing out of the harness, and when this didn't work threw herself on the ground, twisted, rolled, rubbed against objects, and generally tried every possible contortion to get out of it. Meanwhile I stood quite calmly and had a chuckle. Eventually I got my way for once and she had to concede to walking in the direction I wanted to go. Quite happily I might add! For the first time ever I won! Worth every penny just for that!

Disclaimer: I normally don’t write reviews, but felt I had to because I truly love this product. Thanks Ruffwear!I have a 65 lb, lovable, rescue dog. He has a lot of great qualities about him, but he is extremely stubborn! So, when he’s on his leash and decides he wants to sniff something, or go somewhere, he tries to do just that. If his harness doesn’t hold him, like his previous ones, than he’s off running to who knows where. There were a number of incidents where he got loose that started this way and I finally decided to purchase this harness after some hesitation due to price. While it is more expensive, IT WORKS. It is a sturdy harness! My dog has tried to back out of it several times before to no avail. This definitely gives me peace of mind when we are out hiking because I know he won’t be able to get out of the harness. He has even gone wondering through the forest before with this harness on and it greatly enhanced his visibility. He has a brindle coat so he blends right in with trees but with a bright blue reflective harness on, I was able to spot him easier and call him back.As far as comfort, my dog doesn’t seem to have any issue with it one way or the other. He sits still when I put it on and it takes about 30 seconds to get him strapped in. There is a little padding on the straps, but I’m not sure how much of a difference it makes.Keep in mind, this harness may not be for dogs who actively find ways to get out of harnesses (aka think it’s a game/challenge) though I think it would still hold up pretty well! My dog simply has some different body proportions that allowed him to back out of traditional harnesses and he took advantage of that.As far as price, I know it’s a bit steep, but it’s definitely cheaper than the vet bill and emotional turmoil caused by a dog getting hit by a car!

I bought one of these for my dog years ago, because she can back out of a regular harness in a second. Since she tries to back out whenever she hears a loud noise, or if she just wants to sniff in a particular area (!), I'm sure this has saved her life hundreds of times. So, when we got another dog, we quickly learned he pulls back when he feels unsure about his surroundings. We tried some other harnesses at the store, and none fit to my satisfaction. We purchased one that seemed snug enough to keep him from backing out and it rubbed his little elbows raw! I was so glad to see Ruff Wear was still offering this style harness with the second strap. The XXS fits my new 8 lb. chihuahua mix who has a 14 1/2" ribcage. If he fills out as he gets older, we can adjust it and it will still fit. I love the bright blue. The quality is great. It has reflective parts for safety, and a tiny pocket that I think you're supposed to be able to put a safety light into. My dogs might look like they are wearing tiny flak jackets, but they are safe! I very occasionally wash the old harness by putting it into a lingerie bag and putting it on the gentle cycle in my washer. I dry it in the sun or next to the heater. I noticed the new one says to hand wash, but you can try my method at your own risk. The shipping was fast (2 days), which was great since I really needed it for my new pup. The harness seems pricey at first, but it is worth every penny.** I just added a third picture so someone could see what it looks like to pick a dog up in one of these. I think the handles are more meant for support when lifting briefly, but I do use them when getting in/out of the car, when a big dog ran at us, etc. You can see my little guy doesn't like being lifted for a photo, but he's supported and safe.

If your dog escapes collars and other harness you're going to want this one. I have a wiener dog that's barrel-chested and has a small neck. He's escaped a couple of times by backing out of his collar, so I decided to do some research and decided to try RuffWear. I know with dachshunds it's harder to find harness that fit because they have noodle bodies and tiny little legs, making it easy to slip paws out from anything they're put into. I got the XS for my 22" chesty-boy. I had contemplated the S but glad I went XS, it fit him perfectly. You slip it over the head and underneath one arm, then snap and snap! The clips are easy to adjust around the neck, chest, and on the sides.Customizable for all weirdly shaped dogs (mine also has lumps on his undersides and chest, so I had to account for those, too). He wears it incredibly well and has not escaped yet! The material reminds me of heavy duty backpacking gear, so it's meant to last through some heavy wear and tear. The handle is also an addition I love for my oldie. Walking up stairs isn't very easy when he's wearing any form of harness or gear, so the handle is nice to help assist him in making it up the steps. AND it's incredibly nice to be able to reach and grab it to stabilize him when he's barking at people walking by. If you've ever tried to grab a dog when he's trying to scare off a stranger you know how wiley and thrashy they get. This gives you the upperhand, and it doesn't harm them at all to hold on or pull them back. The last thing I need is a new ID tag to put onto it, as it doesn't sit well with a collar (as shown in picture, it's a bit bulky at the neck). I would recommend this one to everyone!

So I've just splashed the cash on the latest version of the webmaster harness. This is actually the fifth(!) I've bought for our two Beagles; the other four are still usable, but once they start showing signs of wear at critical points (lead attachment area specifically) I prefer to retire them. The very first pair of harnesses we bought some 7 years ago were fantastic; hard wearing, easy to adjust, and verging on escape proof. The second pair had been "improved"; they were harder to adjust, tended to loosen during use, and wore faster than the first version. The design has changed yet again for this newest harness; now it's even harder to adjust, but once set it doesn't budge,so in that respect it's more like the first version. I won't know how it wears until my little boy (whose harness this is) has dragged it through mud, scraped it against countless rocks on the way up mountains and tugged like a steam train on his lead after deer for a few months.I can however report that the basic design, with three points of restraint (shoulders, rib cage and lower abdomen), is still the best and safest choice for dogs that are gifted escape artists. My little girl is so good at escaping that she managed to unclip her own lead on the top of The Merrick in Scotland (I now wrap duct tape round the release clip on the lead prior to all big adventure walks) - BUT even she's never got out of a properly fitted webmaster harness. Even if a strap broke the dog would likely be restrained long enough for you to intervene.Sure it's blummin' expensive, but my dogs are worth it, even though I want to strangle the naughty little beggars sometimes.

If my boy whippet weren't so thin with such a deep chest this harness would be completely perfect. It is tightened as far as it goes in the neck as well as waist, and then the chest is at about halfway. His measurements are back 22", chest 27" and I dont sadly KNOW his waist but it's not asked in the chart anyway. His neck though is only just under 10" which makes things tricky. Amazing harness. The handle is a real handle! Others may have them but you can actually pick up a 32lb dog like a suitcase with ease. It makes my fiance giggle. We call our dog our little suitcase when he has it on. Fits much better with a layer of clothing underneath. Considering finally buying the brush guard. The red currant color is lovely in person. Very expensive looking. Have received a surprising amount of compliments. Was meant for hiking and better control on walks and we dont end up using it quite as much as I'd like because of having to fuss with getting him into a shirt or sweater, then his harness, and finally his booties (also ruffwear in red currant color) because of sensitive paw pads. It begins to be a lot for just a potty run or trip around the block. Also the harness is not a step-in OR over-the-head but both (you have to pull over head then bend one front leg to fit it through) and so be warned if you have a dog that fights getting into things. Really lovely though! Will last a long time. Will get the smallest size for my Italian greyhound once he gets a bit bigger and wish the smallest size had a brush guard option! Have read so many discouraging reviews about them but think my whippet Goose could really benefit.

This is the first harness that has EVER contained my escape-artist dog. It is more expensive than many of the other harnesses I tried, but the peace of mind is REALLY worth it. I have tried dozens of different harnesses that claim to be "escape-proof", and he eventually pulled himself out of all of them. The difference with this harness is that it has double body straps. At first it does take some time and "tailoring" to get the straps situated at the right lengths, but that's what makes it so secure. My dog's chest is much bigger than his belly and with previous harnesses that gave him enough room to slip out of them.I bought my first one of these about a year ago and soon bought a back up.They seem to be made very well and last a long time.Anyone who has lost a dog, even just for a few hours, knows how terrifying it. When I first adopted my dog, let's say that he didn't really respect my "authority" yet, so he would often slip out of collars and harnesses and go exploring. He is VERY fast and would leave me in the dust. I got very lucky that he wasn't hit by a car or hurt in some other way, and that he always made it back to me safely. Since he started wearing this harness he hasn't been able to "escape", and it's been much less stressful. The only thing that can get a little tricky is with boy dogs- you have to make sure that the vest is pulled up high enough at the neck to make sure the lower strap doesn't irritate his privates and that he doesn't pee on it. If you buy the right size according to the size chart and play around with the strap lengths, it will work fine.
