Apart from being very happy to share my recommendation for this single malt, I felt I had to correct the very misleading assertion in the 'top-ranked' review on here that this Bunnahbabhain 12 compares to "Talisker and a bottle of Laphroaig and mixed". Short version: Not close, poles apart, this isn't even peated. This B12 has a significant, if moderate (i.e not a 'sherry bomb') sherry influence, being matured in both ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks. It has NOT been peated, not even lightly, and the distillers can confirm this if you contact them. It does not have a "subtle peaty aftertaste." (And even if it did, since when does subtle aftertaste = strong + moderate peat of Taliker plus Laphroaig?).What the B12 does have is a very, very subtle smoky note on the finish, without any of the phenolic, medicinal quality of a smoked peat influence. The Laphroaig Quarter Cask and the 10yr are strongly peated and the Talisker is moderately peated - both without the significant sherry influence of the B12. Mixing the very peaty Laphroaig with an intense peaty and peppy Talisker would in NO WAY add up to the sweet mellow, full-medium bodied, non-phenolic B12, with its slight, wispy smokiness on the finish.Indeed, if you don't like peated malts, this one would be fine. A really moreish go to dram to offer either a beginner or more experienced single malt drinker.

The whisky has a dark almost sherry like colour and when I first took a sniff of it it reminded me of a sweet sherry with maybe sweetness also conjuring up images of toffee. Initially, I couldn't detect the smokiness and I think my eyes had tricked my brain into thinking sherry, sherry , sherry, but it is lingering there. My first impressions were very positive.I tried it straight, but the first sip wasn't quite as nice as I was expecting. It was a little bit harsh on the back of the throat and had a slight burn to it. I generally take all my whisky straight, but at 46.3% ABV it is quite a hit for even the most ardent whisky drinker.A splash of cold water later and the sting had been taken out of the tail somewhat. It is still a tad sharp in the throat for me, but I've not tried this range before which is a little shameful for me being an Islay fan, so perhaps it needs getting used to. After a few sessions with this I was starting to take a liking to it, though It still has a feint sting.Bottom line: I like it, not massively and not necessarily one that would be the first I would recommend, but I certainly would not put somebody off buying it. If you like single malts, especially Islay, it is one to try.

I was not familiar with the distiller and so was unequipped to differentiate this whiskey from, say, a bottle of Teachers on appearance alone. I have however drank rather a lot of reasonably expensive whiskey over the years to mixed reaction on my part. Some taste like swampy water, some like burning tyres. Some are alright. It sat on my shelf with the other crap until i drank a little and immediately had to go online to check what i'd purchased. The name was a bit odd looking and i was worried it might be some form of whiskey-style simulcra from Lidl. They have a habit of producing knockoff branding and thieving people's colour schemes and i suspected there might be a whiskey out there in the same sort of bottle but with the letters in a different order, and i didnt want to look like a twat enjoying the wrong one.Anyway, i'm a self-professed philistine but this is a whiskey that is markedly nicer than all the other ones i've had. Except maybe one in Japan, but i can't recall what that was.

I am a big on Speyside malts and not so keen on the heavier peaty whiskies, so I really enjoyed this. The most northern distillery on Islay, it is considered by many to be the mildest Islay malt. The water is piped direct from a spring in the Margadale Hills, which is the prime reason why so light on peat. Matured in bourbon and sherry casks; these transfer the fruit flavours.Tasting glass and a single ice cube. First to the nose - a honeyness. Silkiness on the tongue with a gentle heat. I did not detect any smokiness. My experience of drinking single malts tells me to expect flavours to develop as the level drops in the bottle, so I usually set aside after a couple of tastings.I'll update my review if I am correct. At the moment, I see this as a summer whisky - nice and easy on the palate, sitting on the patio as the sun goes down. I did not find, in the first glasses, the fruitiness that makes a Christmas whisky.

Having stuck to Speysides I thought I'd venture into the Island Malts. I tried Talisker 30 years ago and really struggled with it. My other half presented me with a bottle of Lagavulin 16 at Christmas (review left) and it almost put me off whisky for life! Anyway on to the Bunnhabhain.Nose was fresh fruit, apples/pears with brown sugar and a very slight smokiness and pepper in the background. On first taste (with water added). The fresh fruit was there immediately, sweetness but not too sweet. As it developed a it seemed to become floral, sweet again but not too sweet. This was followed with a peppery spice like taste. The finish long and only very slightly smoky. A smoked toffee finish.Overall a very impressive dram.Bang for buck is huge on this one. A must buy for any malt fan!

I thought I hated this after the first few mouthfuls - it stank of malt and tasted like free jazz, an uncoordinated discordant mess. By the end of the first dram, it started to become more interesting, with dark fruits and salted nuts coming to the fore with a very clean, sweet, fresh finish. By the end of the 2nd dram, I was converted. This is an acquired taste within an acquired taste, a real treat. My first unpeated Islay malt too, but it certainly won't be my last! The lack of chill filtration and the higher ABV really add to the appeal here, the colour is a beautiful copper and the extra 6.3% really gives it a boot up the backside. Aside from the peerless Laphroaig 10 & QC,the best whisky I've paid £30 a bottle for.

A giant leap forward for Bunnahabhain 12yo, this edition was launched in summer 2010 with a jump in strength to 47.3% and a declaration of no chill-filtration and no added colouring. The producers deserve enormous credit for giving punters what they want without jacking up the price too much & we earnestly hope that this will be a massive success.Tasting Notes:Nose - Briny and earthy, with camphor, apples, sea salt, a hint of orange and Salted Caramel.Palate - Syrupy in texture with vanilla and a light smokiness, more woody than peaty. Water brought out more sweet creamy vanilla and some perfume from the wood, as well as some sticky glacé cherry.Finish - Dry with woody spice.

I am new to Whisky drinking and was recommended this by a friend, my first impression was this is not for me, then slowly and after each mouthful it starts to taste better and I can see why he recommended it.This seems to happen every time I drink it where as the first few sips I think what am I doing drinking this but then by the 4th and 5th I'm actually enjoying it and can taste the flavours, I found that by adding a touch of water seems to enhance the flavours more and not make it as harsh.I have give it four stars due to my inexperience but after I have tried different whiskys I will certainly buy another bottle of this stuff.

Bunna have had a few poor batches over the years, but this is certainly not one of them. This is an absolutely splendid complex malt that benefits from is young age. Where the flavours in the 18yo seem to have blended too much together, in this (due to its young age) they really stand out, resulting in a magnificent experience. Age doesn’t necessarily mean quality. And for the price, I cannot think of a better bottle. Look out for the heavily peated 8yo Gordon Mcphail expression (likely only available on WhiskyBase), another cheap fantastic malt that puts other older, more expensive bottles shame.

The landlord of my local pub let me have a little taste of this and I thought "this is something special".I was so impressed I asked my wife to get me a bottle for my Birthday.Pronounced "Bu-na-ha-venn" it is more gentle than your usual Islay whisky. The nose is fresh and aromatic with a subtle hint of smoke. The taste starts with light fruit and nut that follows on to a spectacular malty sweetness. The finish is a lingering and rich full bodied experience. This is now my favorite Scotch, and if you like whisky I am sure you will like this!

This is one of those whiskies that tick the most boxes for me.Non chill filtered,46%Bags of flavour,Readily available and good value in the local supermarkets. One of my favourite Islay whiskies, and I have tried most of them. I enjoy it just as much as anything from my other favourite distilleries such as Glendronach, Glenfarclas, Springbank and even the older Bunnahabhain, but this is half the price. One of the best bargains in whisky as far as I am concerned.Always seems to be consistently good too, unlike some others I could mention.

Everyone has different tastes in whiskey and for me this was a little sweet, but it grew on me. I’ve seen a few whiskey youtubers rave about this one so I gave it ago. Very smooth and easy to drink, good flavours (although not to my personal preference) and overall I think you should give this one a try if you haven’t already. Should try everything once, that’s how you find things you love.Personally wouldn’t buy again but glad i tried it. Amazon was the cheapest at the time and it arrived within 2 days which is great service.

Dried fruit and sherry. Slightly peaty but strong vanilla oak. Love that smell lingering in the glass unlike the leathery alcohol smell - quite amazing vanilla, sweet apricot jam, muscovado sugar - almost rum-like. Good long finish with liqourice? Quite nice, much smoother than 10 yo and doesn't show its 46.3%. Imagine what it could do with more years in the barrel but 18 yo is £120 - is it really worth 4 times more? This is GREAT value at thirty quid and quite relived to know I have another in waiting.

I'm not a whisky drinker, but this whisky is almost live drinking honey, it's so smooth and has a lovely after taste. For some reason, for me, whisky tends to have a flavour reminiscent of bananas (I hate bananas) but I don't get that from Bunnahabhain, I think it's lovely.I bought this for my husband, who has had it before and agrees it's very nice indeed. If you are looking to buy a bottle of whisky as a present you can't go wrong with this I'm sure any whisky drinker would be delighted.

16.3.2018

It's taken me a few weeks thinking to review this whisky and in the end, despite the fact I like it, I cannot say I love it. It's over finished for my tastes and the after taste what I'd call (not being a whisky snob) a little bleak, There's a lot going on at the first taste - a lot of competing flavour and aroma from the finishing, but then it's a bit disappointing.A lot of people seem to disagree, but I've hit it clean on several occasions and it doesn't deliver on the initial promise.
