For me, Altra Lone Peak 4's are extremely comfortable, highly functional walking and hiking shoes. Why? Well padded, supportive footbed. Good arch support, but not too much. Wide toe box, making for great comfort at front of foot. Really greatretentive heel, and the shoe laces up firmly over middle of foot (so no forward sliding into that roomy toebox, and no sliding off at the heel). Very grippy sole, including in the wet. I personally have had no issue with the zero drop design -- I find it works as a natural walking 'rolling' motion for me. The result is a shoe that stays firmly on the foot, goes uphill and downhill very well and has sustained comfort and support for walking, even on hard surfaces. You feel solid going over uneven ground and I would venture that injuries are less likely because your foot is doing just what you tell it to do, not mushing around and straining your ankles.Add to this that these shoes are pretty lightweight, and you have a shoe ideally suited to travel. The wide toe box deserves emphasis for anyone who has the same problem as me ... over and over I found that toe boxes on shoes are too narrow for me. Then I would go up half a size or a whole size and then the whole shoe felt too loose. Not these shoes -- they fit like gloves without being constricting at all. Laces untied, they feel like slippers. One last point: Altra Lone Peak 4's are not waterproof. This is not an problem for me, it is a plus. I detest (as in hate, loathe, despise) gore tex shoes, which overheat my feet when the temperature is over 70F/20C and which get soggy anyway in hot or in really wet conditions. These Altras will get wet pretty fast in the rain or on wet ground. And then they dry out again, and they probably dry out much quicker than goretex shoes which have limited permeability and retain water that still lurks inside after a storm. If you want waterproof shoes, then look elsewhere -- I have leather hiking shoes for wet conditions and I take good care of them. I have been wearing my Altra Lone Peak 4's in all but heavy or persistent rain, and of course I will not wear them in cold midwinter snow and slush. I have put my money where my mouth is... I have bought three pairs Altra 4's already. Sometimes companies that make a really great product just discontinue it, and I did not want that to happen to me. When Altra make a discreetly colored all-gray or all-black version, I will buy yet another pair or two!

I am one of the first people in the UK to own the Lone Peak 4 and really glad I managed to get hold of a pair. I got them from Amazon a couple of weeks ago and have to say I am really pleased with them. I own a pair of Altra Superior 3.5's and a pair of Saucony Peregrine 8's. The reason I selected the Lone Peaks is that I liked the idea of zero drop trail shoes with lots of cushioning and support. They certainly provide comfort as I walk/power hike across the South Down in them. I use the shoes with DryMax or Stance socks and together they are a great combination. I haven't ran the trails with them yet and am looking forward to getting them on for training runs. They are slightly large,I am a size 10 in the Perregrines and these do come up a little large, I had tried the UK 9.5 Lone Peak 3.5 on but they pinched my toes a little so knew they wouldn't work for me. I have read a few reviews and Altra used the same last for the 4 as well as the 3.5's but have tweaked the fitting slightly and it definitely shows. I find North American sizing a little odd at times (10 too large , 9.5 too small). Overall great hiking/trail shoes. I am a vegan and these are certified vegan (no animal based glues or materials) and are certified on the PETA website. A great shoe and probably one of the best keep secrets in the UK. The Lone Peaks are raved over in the US by the walking community (check out you tube). I would have given 5 stars if I could have tweaked the sizing).

I transition to the Altra Lone Peak 4 from a traditional hiking shoe (merrell moab 2). For those that don't know this is switching a basic low cut boot to a trail running shoe. Comparing them isn't useful so I won't do that here.As far as a zero drop trail runner I found these incredibly comfortable. I have never found a trail shoe that felt good on my feet for more than 10 minutes but the lone peak seems to be the exception. I walked a few treadmill miles on them to see if they would be a good fit for them then broke them in with a 10 mile hike on the mountains to sea trail in western North Carolina. They felt great and they are now my go to hiking shoe.Let me emphasize that this is a zero drop shoe which means that the fat padded heel you're used to that is pampering your achilles tendon and calf muscles will no longer be there. There is plenty of cushion on this shoe but it's designed to be a flat shoe with zero heel drop and no arch support. If you transition from a stability shoe or even a neutral shoe too fast you might find achilles or facia pain. The toe box is big and roomy and the heel stays snug. Great shoe. Great fit.

This shoe has an excellent fit for a running shoe; the wide toe box is particularly appealing to me, as someone with slightly wide feet and many toe calluses to show for it. The shoe features a very comfortable zero drop sole with great outsole grip for the trail. I have yet to put many miles into it, although with my limited weekend trail runs spent in the Lone Peak’s, I can say they feel great and (as any good running shoe should) do not require any break in period.Personally, I was deciding between a size 10 and a size 10.5 US, ultimately choosing my true size 10. I was quite happy with this decision as the fit is very unconstricted, providing ample room for swelling feet or wool socks.I cannot attest to how the shoe interacts with water as I live in a desert, however I can say I have no problems with sweat as the mesh material is very breathable. The grip is ideal for encountering slippery terrain or gravel slopes. Finally, they are extremely light, perfect for any day hiker, thru hiker, trail runner or casual outdoor adventure seeker.

Full support in the heel and midfoot, wide enough in the toebox to wiggle your toes. The zero drop (no lift in the heel) makes a huge difference in comfort as well.If you watch thru-hiker videos, you'll see a huge number of them use these shoes to walk across the nation. You see the foot logo on the bottom of so many of their shoes. If they trust these with their feet for that kind of activity, you can certainly trust them to get you where you need to go.The story of the design of these shoes is kind of cool. A young entrepreneur seeing trail runners come into his father's shoe store with many of the same foot problems. He decided to design a shoe that solved those problems.A wide toebox to reduce pinching and blisters, zero drop to spread the load across the whole foot instead of the front, light weight, etc. And it worked!I think this is the brand of shoe I'm going to stick with from here on out...

The toe box and zero drop features are why I got into Altra, but of their trail shoes, the LonePeak 4.0 is the best of the bunch. One note up front - they run a half size smaller than most shoes. These already have more than 250 miles and show no signs of breaking down. I've run on wooded trails, up the Alps, in the snow, on rocks, in mud and sand - they plow through it all. The outsole does a good job with traction and absorbing some of the shock so your feet don't feel like they're taking a beating. For disclosure, I run with a carbon fiber insert because my feet are nearly flat, so this also helps a lot but the shoes have plenty of room for them. I've had Hoka's that fell apart within 50 miles, even the Altra Temps blew out the first time I took them out into the mud. The LonePeaks are my favorite for their ability to respond to multiple terrain types and their durability.

I bought these shoes to replace my Old Lone Peaks. They’re sole-ly (ha) hiking shoes. I finally got to really break them in on the Fiery Gizzard down in TN.They fit comfortably and performed well. There were rock scrambles, stream crossings, ankle-deep mud holes, flooded areas, steep climbs and descents on which to put them to the test. They dried quickly when I got them wet, which was several times. The mud flakes right off when they’re dry, and I only had to re-tie them once. The grip is well designed, too. I didn’t slide around quite as easily as I did with other shoes on the same trail in similar conditions.I’m thinking about buying a couple more pairs before they run out. There was a span of about five months where I had to wear a different model (Altra Superior) because the 3’s were out of stock and the 4’s hadn’t come out yet. I don’t want to do that again.

I tend to prefer shoes that don't call attention to themselves. Give me brown, or black or grey. Sporting the (what I consider) garish neon blue color of the LP4 is a very small price to pay for the outlandish comfort of these shoes. I wore them all day on an outing in Orlando last month and I plan on wearing them all day again tomorrow ...walking all over downtown Chicago. I'm prepping for some hiking in Colorado and trying to get my feet used to the 0 degree drop. So far, I've noticed little discomfort due to that but other reviews have warned to 'ease into wearing these' ... so I am.I am amazed that I can wear a size 8.5 in this shoe . Much shorter than any other shoe I've purchased in the last 30 years.I had to upsize my past shoes to get a foot box that fit. Not so with these. They are a near perfect (too bright) shoe for me and worth every penny thus far.

I like that they go on my feet. If I had to put it on my hands it would be weird. They definitely don't fit on your knees. You can probably sit on them and they would be comfortable but I don't believe that's the best news. Ever since I discovered my first pair of ultra's I have purchased nothing else.I work on my feet all day as an electrician I wear these shoes at work I also wear these shoes to run hills. Who in their right mind wears anything else? Do you know who? People that have never tried them on.I think i've returned one pair to Amazon because of how I miss judged my size....Other than that, every pair I've ordered from Amazon has put a huge smile on my face.I purchased these almost a year ago sometime early 2019 and I just bought three more pairs....two from altra.com and and one from Amazon I can't get enough of these shoes!

This is my latest pair of trail runners in a very long line of trail runners, but my first pair of Altras and will be my brand of choice from now on. I actually use them for work and not running, but they have been the best pair of sneakers I’ve ever had. I work in a home improvement warehouse and spend my days walking many miles on concrete floors and have liked trail runners for their chunky soles and (mostly) durable upper shoe, but nothing has compared to the comfort and strength of this sneaker. I have wide flat feet and have had issues with foot pain from being on concrete all day, so the wide toe box gives my foot enough room to breathe and the zero drop sole has just about eliminated the pain in my heels and balls of my feet!I love them so much I’m about to purchase a second pair right after I finish writing this review!

I marked this product as being a little wider than normal for my review but that is not a problem at all as I have wide feet. Someone with very narrow feet that has to have a narrow shoe to be comfortable may not like these shoes but they are perfect for me. I bough these because they are what practically all of the thru hikers I have watched on YouTube wear. They are also the top rated shoe for outdoor gear lab which has never let me down. And for good reason. When you slip your foot into these shoes you’ll likely be taken back by how comfortable they are. I know I was. Been wearing them around town and I honestly forget that I have feet that’s how good they feel. Can’t wait to take them out of the trail next week and give them a real test. Buy these now if you’re looking for hiking or trail running shoes you won’t be let down.

Coming from Asics Scram Gel trail shoes, I had high expectations of the Altra Lone Peak 4. When they first arrived, the construction seems solid, I like the wide toe box, drain ports, and of course zero drop.I initially started using these shoes on short trail runs (3-5 miles) to get used to the zero drop, and have been building up miles. During back to back long runs, the ball of my feet and knees really started hurting. Upon inspection of the insoles, I noticed how flimsy they were. I compared the insoles to my older Altra one v3 and there is a big difference. It seems Altra skimped on the LP4 insoles. After replacing the insoles with Sof Sole Airr Insoles, the shoe seems much more complete.Overall I think this is a quality shoe, Altra just needs to address the insole.

My second pair of Altras. The fit is identical to the Altra Lone Peak 3. There is slightly less padding in the upper, which is a plus. For a summer shoe, I prefer less thickness in the upper for breath-ability. The sole is less squishy so is more stable when running along a slope. The lugs are taller than the 3 for better traction, though can feel them through the soles; don't know if that is a problem yet. Drainage hole locations are better situated. They have a better fit around the ankles than previous. The previous pair suffered premature mid sole collapse even though the uppers and bottom soles are in good shape. The forefoot and heal thickness was reduced over time so the arch became to high to wear comfortably.Hopefully this was corrected in the 4 version.

This shoe is perfect for my needs. I use it to wade into lakes/rivers in the BWCA for entering/exiting a kevlar canoe and then hiking between lakes while carrying gear. The shoe fits my feet, wider toes, and has excellent traction in wet conditions. It is very lightweight yet protects my feet from sharp rocks and branches. The shoe drains water well and dries quickly. I suppose I would appreciate a better debris guard to keep little pebbles and mud out of my feet but the shoe wasn't designed for that so other solutions are possible. My last trip I portaged over 23 miles and used this shoe exclusively with very favorable results. When this shoe is worn out, I will purchase another pair, without a doubt. Very happy with this product!

I have a crazy high arch and run on the balls of my feet for the most part. I love love love the open, wide toebox so much I immediately ordered another pair to wear as my work boots!I have run approximately 18 miles since I got them last week. Tonight my son and I hiked up to a local fire tower and we found the trail to be muddy and then snow-covered! We both wore running shoes, me in the Altras. Our feet were soaked but I was amazed at the grip I had on this fast-hike/trail run with a 50# pack. Cleaned them up as soon as we got home and they are drying now!Hope Altra begins offering more shoes in 14 because i’m Hooked. Being 6’4” 240, I need to have as much room for my foot to splay out as I can get!Love these! Thanks!
