So far I have done one hike (6 miles) and two trails runs (3-4) miles in these shoes. For me these shoes fit true to size. As I expected based on reviews, the toe box was a bit on the narrower side, which I think does help with maneuverability when running on rough trails, and is an intentional feature of the design. I found it did start to become just slightly uncomfortable in the forefoot after a long period of wear, which wasn't a surprise. Overall comfort is good. I also liked the fact that, despite the slightly narrow shape, the upper construction allows for quite a bit of adjustment and accommodation of different sock types.I found the lacing system effective and it has the feature of a pouch at the top of the tongue to secure the excess laces and fastening device, so you have nothing bouncing around while running. Traction is great although it does have its limits. In particular, wet rocks (which I knew to be careful with) and clay-like mud (which sticks to anything).Although the amount and feel of the cushioning is generally good, I do agree with the main criticism that many reviewers had about the Speedcross 4. The heel stack height is just a little too high. That height, combined with narrowish footprint, did lead to a couple moments of sketchy ankle movement, although nothing that caused pain or injury. I noticed when looking on Salomon's website they now produce a version of the Speedcross 4 with a slightly lower heel, which might be an option if that's a concern for you. I wouldn't call it a glaring defect, but it does seem a little silly to push the heel height on an aggressive trail running shoe that by no means needs the extra cushioning. Overall though, I find it to be a great shoe, and I still feel like I'm getting used to it.

I received my Speedcross 4 GTX's on Friday and took them straight out of the box and ran 10km on Saturday and again on Sunday and was impressed. The weight is clearly shown within the technical data of the advert but I was surprised by how light and balanced they felt. My right foot is about half a size bigger than my left (relatively normal I think) but both shoes were a good fit - I'm size 11. I use Saucony's for the road which are a little wider at the toe than the Salomon's, but the tighter fit and narrowness at the toe gave better stability in the mud and I felt confident immediately. The grip on very wet and muddy tracks was excellent and the goretex kept my feet dry despite the puddles, rain, sleet and snow! Obviously with a trail shoe, you don't expect as much cushioning as a road shoe and every so often I could feel larger rocks through the soles however, both my weekend routes had approx. 1.5km of road/pavement running and the GTX 4's were more than comfortable on the tarmac/concrete. Overall, I'm delighted with them and will buy them again. Footnote (no pun!) - I have a pair of Salomon walking shoes which are equally comfortable but they have taken quite a bit longer to 'break in' which might reflect other people's comments on sizing.

I was jogging TODAY at the National Volcano Trial on Hawaii Big Island. See my video and picture posted here - near Hilo HI, where it gets average 200 days wet per year according to local people. The shoes protected my feet all day like no other shoes have ever done!Since I am an outdoor guy: snowboarding / trailing / jogging you name it, which makes me a Gore-Tex (GTX below) fan I have owned from head to toe: jackets, windstoppers, pants, shoes etc. Anyway I have both Salomon 3 and 4 GTX trail/running shoes and Adidas GTX, I wear / switch 4 of them everyday based on my needs (and my moods??).Hands down Salomon 4 GTX is the most comfortable, firm, and all wrapped up your feet from toe to heel.It grasps muddy rocky slippery road like a piece of cake, it sticks to normal paced road like a snow tire with tire cable in the snow - I have never felt with other GTX shoes, it also, of course thanks for Gore-Tex technology, protects my feet from getting wet.The most important thing is it does not hurt my feet after a whole day wearing. I have slight flat arches and had to remove original insole and placed a high arch support insole whenever I switch shoes. This pari keeps my feet in place firmly and comfortably.

These are a great pair of trail running shoes if you're going to be exclusively running on soft ground (grass, mud, earth, sand, etc). They are comfortable, sturdy, waterproof, supportive on uneven ground, and will take a battering in their stride (no pun intended!). I have a neutral pronation and these shoes feel good for me over long distances. However, they are clearly designed for digging into soft ground and therefore have a relatively small contact area with hard surfaces due to their stud like tread configuration. The rubber is soft so traction on tarmac is not in itself a problem. However, due to the stud configuration and softness of the rubber, you will get very few miles from them on tarmac surfaces before the studs wear out. So much so that I don't use them when I'm running trails that include any tarmac surface whatsoever, and have bought a pair of Saucony Trail Runners for such purposes. They are awesome for tough mudder / hell runner type events etc, but I wouldn't rely on them as my only trail runner as I suspect I'd need a new pair every 200km or so. Put into context I 'broke them in' with a 6km walk to the pub on the road and saw significant signs of wear to the studs as a result.

Salomon Men's Speedcross GTX 4Simply put, these are the best hiking shoes I've ever used. The have a very comfortable fit, and cocoon the foot well, without being too tight. The heel support is good, and the sole padding is better than many high-ankled boots I've used in the past. I opted for the Goretex version, and the waterproofing has come in handy hiking in wet areas. They are perfect for hikes in rain and through small streams. I've hiked about 250 miles (400km) in these, through Norway and the Great Walks of New Zealand. The tread has held up remarkably well, with about 50% wear, which is better than I expected. The best feature of these shoes is the tread grip that runs up the toe-box,and the inverted tread on the heel. It creates a grip patch that is perfect for going up near-vertical rock faces, or descending them directly. I've done some short trail runs in these, and they are comfortable, but I actually prefer them for longer (15-25k) day hikes. These shoes have made me a Salomon customer for life, and are the only boots I would trust to jump out onto Kjeragbolten (pictured).

After reading many reviews i;ve been swayed to buy and haven't regretted it.They have really decent chunky stud like rubber protrusion on the sole that grips mud nicely, but still flexes and gives when running on hard surfaces and tarmac.I agree with other reviews that, that they have a narrow base, and it is advisable to go for a 1/2 large than normal.I wear a 9 (43) in most sport shoes, and can fit in a 8.5 (42) of some brands. Based on other peoples advise i went for a 9.5 (44) and have found this to be an appropriate fit. They are an enveloping fit around the base and arch of my foot without being baggy on top and without excessive space at the end.I've worn them with both normal and slightly thicker winter socks and they've been great,, after a bit of playing with the speed laces to properly adjust.I haven't been able to full test the water proofing yet, but i've ran through lots of boggy muddy paths with no slipping or water leakage.

I have owned so many of the Salomon shoes. I kid you not these are by far one of the best trail shoes you will find anywhere. Super flexible with great grip (even in snow) I use it in sand, clay, wet and muddy conditions. I know a lot people wear these in obstacle competitions. They are very comfortable and improved version of Speedcross 3. They are still very lightweight with all the additions and improvements. I would buy a tiny larger size since your feet will swell when running, hiking or trailing. The shoes fit like a sock and takes the shape of your feet. I STRONGLY suggest dipping them in water the first day you will be wearing them for the trails. It will shape much better for your feet by the end of your trail run or walk. Let me know if you have questions. Like I said, I won almost any trail shoes Salomon makes. I can help you pick the right one for climbing, trails, hiking, biking, wet, snow, mud, competition etc.

I have a high arch which causes under pronation. It can be painful to the outside of my foot after several days of running and walking. Salomon Speedcross is designed for those who have this condition and thus the reason I bought my first pair of 4-GTX's.First, they run small both in length and width. I usually wear 10M but after reading prior reviews I went to 10.5M. The half size larger was the right move.. As for width, the medium is about as narrow as I could wear. I suggest a buyer consider this when selecting this shoe.As for the quicklace system, it's not the best I have seen and the reason I took a star off.Certainly BOA is well ahead in ease of use and quick adjustability. As for the running support it will have to take some time to let these shoes prove out but I have had the Salomon brand in ski gear before and have always considered it a premium high quality product.

Great shoes for trail running. Grips like claws on loose and soft ground. Hard soles protect from stoney tracks. Goretex is waterproof having run on beaches and through shallow puddles and streams, feet kept dry.Having read reviews fit was smaller than expected. Went up a full shoe size from formal leather shoes and up half a size on my road running shoes. They are also narrow in the toe box so need good socks to avoid pressure points and break them in before a doing a long run.Compared to my road running shoes they don’t breathe as well, but this is to be expected when waterproof. The ride on road is very firm so you really need to stay on soft ground.Lock lace is good simple idea. But can be over tight at the top and can loosen over the run. The laces tuck into the tongue which is a great simple idea. After around 40 miles of running so far very pleased with them.

I bought these mainly for walking and with a need for water resistance.I trail run also but already have a trail shoe I find more suited to me.Anyway, so far (1week) these have been great. I’ve owned the non water resistant version before and know the fit. Recommend you buy at least a 0.5 size larger. I’m a 9/9.5 and bought a UK 10.We’ve had a lot of snow this week so water resistance tested and absolutely 100% dry.I also did a very snow trail run on hard compact snow and grip was excellent (and dry feet) no slips or falls in 7mile run. Hard rubber sole on ice is treacherous though.I moved away from Speedcross trail shoes previously because I prefer a more cushioned sole.Running with these in the snow was perfect though. I’ll revert to my Hoka’s when the snow is gone. Only 4 stars because I’ve only had them a week and you never know...

I've used these for over 18 months and are the only pair of trail running shoes I've used. That's the caveat, I can only compare them to road running shoes.1) I'm not convinced they suit me feet over 20 miles.2) The firm sole (by the nature of trail shoes) make your feat fatigue a lot faster than they would normally. As a result I only wear these where my runs are circa 75% or I know the course to be technical (or weather conditions make the majority of the course technical).3) The goretex layer does work very well in comparison to road shoes. Your road shoes are hyper ventilated so just by walk through tall wet grass your feet will get wet. This will prevent that. Also your pretty safe submerging your foot in puddles up to the bottom of the tongue.

I’m an experienced hiker an mountaineer living in the PNW. I have tried countless boots. These a the BEST dayhiking shoe I have ever worn. Great for light pack weight hikes. I have recommended these to many of my friends hiking in various conditions. Had to remove 1 Star for the Contragrip sole material (Solomon proprietary design/material). Don’t get me wrong the soles perform well but the durability is horrible compared to the industry standard Vibram soles. Vibram is used by every boot company from light dayhikers to $900 mountaineering boots. Vibram soles will last for years and the sole grip/performance is comparable or better.I can’t imagine why Solomon is using contra grip but if they started using Vibram it would be a five star boot!

Really like these off-road shoes. Upped the choice for waterproofing this time since the last pair I had weren't, and given they got more use for dog walking than running, it was a problem. They grip well (too well on Tarmac if I'm honest - rolled my ankle first time out), but that's hardly a criticism of the shoe. The only point I'd mention is sizing - I went with the guide and bought 1/2 size up. If anything, they are slightly too big - wished I'd gotten the smaller size to try out first, and not simply headed out into the mud with the ones I now have.Last pair lasted 2 years with regular use, but I'd say they are probably toast after 18 months (the grip obviously wears flat and you have asmuch traction as a banana skin then

Firstly, if you don’t read any further than this, buy a size up. I saw this somewhere about Salomon and it’s true... they recommend you go a size up. I’m a UK size 9 in everything but I needed a 10 in these.I’ve had these a few months now and they’ve been brilliant so far. I’ve used them mainly for trail running up in the hills so it’s been a combination of loose stoney paths & some grass. I have tackled a couple of mountains as well and they’ve been just as good. The grip is practically bomb-proof... I don’t recall slipping on anything yet. The only drawback is the grip isn’t very hard wearing but I knew that before I bought them so I’m not marking them down.Once the grip had gone I’ll definitely be getting another pair!!

I ordered a half size up based on researching Salomon before my purchase, and it worked out great. The shoe didn’t need any breaking in, felt great right from the box and hugs my feet perfectly. With this being a trail shoe you will definately want to use it for that, it’s not designed for road running and the grip is specialised for the trails, digging in and allowing you to have confidence on your footing without slipping and sliding. I’ve tested them on dry path and flooded paths at the lakes and they’ve been great. If you’re going for ultras with really tough terrain you will prob alt want to look into something with more cushioning and support like a Hoka etc, but for a mile or ten, these work perfectly.
