The StarTech S352BU33RER is a dual-bay external hard drive enclosure (for 3.5" SATA drives) with multiple connectivity and disk control options. It permits hot-swapping of installed drives. Interface attached devices is either via USB 3.0 or eSATA connectivity. Installed disks can be used either as independent drives (separate drive letters, or JBOD: "just a bunch of disks"). Additionally, it has a front panel switch for a hardware-only RAID setup (RAID 1, RAID 0 or both drives spanned into a single disk configuration).I am using this device via the USB 3.0 cable, and have the two installed drives configured as separate lettered drives in a Windows 7 environment (the "standard" position on the bay's function switch). The disks slid easily into the bay; torque from the right side of the bay door when closing seats the disk to the connectors at the rear of the bay. It was instantly recognized by Windows 7, and the two drives become available for use immediately. This is a heavy unit (more than 6 pounds) that feels solid and well made.Although it includes two RAID and a non-RAID multi-disk spannning option, I did not test these features. There is no software RAID or disk management interface, and I'm simply not comfortable managing my RAID configurations without one (presumably this is what separates this device from other NAS devices).Excellent performance as a dual-bay enclosure for back-up or maintenance needs. Why four stars instead of five? Primarily because of the lack of a dedicated user interface for RAID management and fan noise. Yes, I know Windows disk management tools allow management of mirrored/striped hard disks. But if you've used them, you'll know why a dedicated RAID control UI is a better choice:-)The fan noise isn't unacceptable, but this enclosure is louder than either the PS/graphics card fans on my PC and the fan on a desktop RAID device. There are no show-stoppers here, but you should be aware of them.Overall, this is a strong performer if used in the correct way (and for me, this with each disk working independently). Select with confidence.

After upgrading my Synology NAS I found myself with two homeless yet perfectly serviceable 2TB drives. The obvious solution was an external 2-bay enclosure which could serve as extra storage. The StarTech enclosure is small, sturdy and ridiculously simple to install. Drive access requires removal of a single screw and the two bare drives are simply pushed into place without any additional fixing.RAID mode is selected, when the unit is powered off, by a four-way switch and holding in a push-button while powering-up. JBOD, RAID 0, RAID 1 and "Big" modes are available; I chose "Big" mode which joins my two 2TB drives, presenting one "Big" 4TB drive to the attached computer. The enclosure supports both eSATA and USB3 connections and the innards are kept cool by a rear-mounted fan.Transfer speeds are fast over USB3, as expected, although I have yet to persuade my NAS to recognise the presence of an eSATA device but I suspect that's a Synology problem. The only downsides encountered so far are sensory; the aforementioned cooling fan is loud enough to become annoying (the fan runs continuously whether the drives are spinning or not) and the front-mounted power and activity LEDs are really very bright - cured here by the application of some stylish black electrical tape.In summary: a good enclosure let down by some minor-yet-annoying faults.

I have a mid-2010 Mac Pro, which doesn't support USB 3 or thunderbolt, so my only option for fast external HDD was e-SATA. I was attracted to the StarTech as it was cheap, well designed, and StarTech have a good reputation. Plus it has USB 3, which is good if I eventually upgrade to a machine that supports it.So far so good. I have it hooked to a Sonnet Tempo E2P PCIe card, and RAID mode is 0 (striped). I don't need the drives to be fault tolerant, just fast. There are 2 WD green 1TB drives inside.I'm getting write speeds of 110 MB/sec which I'm very happy about. If the device proves to be reliable, I'll be getting a second one, and using them both as off-site backups. Some advice if you get this drive :(1)Don't mix drive sizes in combined mode, because when one is full, it may hang. In fact only mix drive sizes in JBOD mode.(2) When you switch RAID modes, you may need to format the drives individually before the new mode is picked up correctly. So select JBOD, format each drive, then switch to the mode you actually want. This worked for me when changing from combined to striped. At the end of the day, this is a cheap case, so expect some quirks. But if you are methodical when setting up, you will get good results.

I came here looking for reviews from people using this device (the 2-bay) over eSATA on Linux. There are not many of these, it seems they are largely from Mac users. I ended up buying this elsewhere as the price went up when I went to buy it, it's now less than I paid elsewhere (grr) but still... I've thrown in two spare drives (mismatched 2TBs left over from a file server) and set them up as RAID 1. This process was blindingly simple and equally as quick. In the 24 hours since I bought it, I've tested the USB (2 and 3) connection to verify my disks were working then hooked it up to eSATA on my hypervisor with a view to using the 2TB RAID1 set as the storage for my VM OS disks. I must say,the write performance is not what I'd hoped. I'd expected to get approx 50% of single disk performance on write, as is typical in RAID 1, but it's markedly less than that, more like 20%, but read performance is right where you'd expect it to be. At the moment it's holding the OS disks for 4 semi-busy VMs and doing just fine. Boot times are much better than the single disk they were all sat on previously. So far, so good. If it does anything funny, I'll be back to let you know. Oh and the lights, yeah, they're bright.

This is a splendid bit of kit.Bought it because my fully-loaded MacPro died and I figured an iMac with one of these attached would be a decent replacement.Nice design. You get a get 4 sets of pop-on rails for the SATA drives included. Not 100% obvious which way up they go from the instructions supplied but you can figure it out with a little trial and error as the rails come off easily enough with a blunt knife (it's spring-clip upwards, if you're interested).Transferring the data from my old Mac HD mounted in this rack gave me a sustained 52mb/sec.5 super-bright blue LEDs give you power & drive status for each bay.Things I'd change to make it perfect:Fascia being attached with Allen keys rather than just a clip makes changing the drives around a .bit of a faff. Then again I guess it cuts down on vibration noise so I guess it's only an issue if you plan to swap the drives a lot.Price is a shade high for what it is. They could probably shave a few quid off by not giving you mains plugs for every country in the world…Other than that - if you need a lot of storage or you're a cautious type who'd like a 4-disk RAID I think you're pretty much sorted here.

Great product. Very compact unit not much bigger than the hard drives themselves. HD installation takes seconds. The removal screw for the front cover is the worst thing about this item as it's on the bottom of the unit, not so much if you don't swap drives very often but you can always leave it off for easy access. Plug in via USB3 or eSATA and configure the drives through disk manager. Simple but understandable instructions provided for the uninitiated. Important note : When connecting with eSATA to your PC, make sure your adapter card is JBOD (Just a Bunch Of Disks) compatible otherwise you will only see the first drive. Startech.com is a good place to go to get these kind of accessories. The fan is very quiet and seems to provide adequate cooling but have yet to stress the unit yet with some large data copying. Oh one last thing, the LED indicators on the front panel are insanely bright and make it look a bit cheap but looks aren't important as overall it's great.

Very nicely constructed enclosure. This houses my new startup SanDisk 960GB SSD 2.5" drive for my mid 2011 27" iMac. I bought the Startech 2.5" housing adaptor for it - also very well made.Startech 2.5 to 3.5 inch SATA Aluminum Hard Drive Adapter EnclosureThe case fan if not required can be easily disconnected via a cable accessed behind a quick release cover at the rear - clever!Mine came with an included 2 metre Thunderbolt cable, which is more than enough to put the box out of sight.Because this is a long term solution for my computing needs I took my time choosing and have not been disappointed in any way.I recommend this enclosure unreservedly.

I have one of these drives and it has been delightfully fast and stable for about six months. However when first getting it, was a pain in the rear end. Much like other poor reviews, the drives would seemingly randomly disconnect and the raid fail. Irritation does not begin to describe how I felt. Because it was second hand but nearly new tech support was limited but willing to engage with discussion and try to help. I eventually had the whole thing in pieces testing it bit by bit. Finally found that the rocker switch was faulty and was affected the power to the drives intermittently. Replaced the rocker switch and all has been fine since.

Installed with two 4Tb Seagate drives in mirror RAID 1 configuration. Setup OK.Running on 2013 iMac, Yosemite 10.10.1, directly into the Mac hardware, no hub.Loaded a 3Gb file in a flash quite impressed with the speed so far.Fan is noisy not something I'd like to leave on all the time so as I'm using to store RAW files I switch on and off as I need to access or process files, not a real problem. If I'd been using my old Windows based PC the noise would likely not be such an issue, but the iMac is so quite!I would still recommend for me it's a good way of using old drives (previously used as TimeMachine drives).

I have two of these now running daisychained off my iMAC and they are really excellent. Fast transfer speeds and extremely simple to set up. To date they have never given me a problem. I removed the fans as well as the front panels. They may not look very pretty as such, but with no front panels I can simply pull out those disks I am not using so as not to leave them connected all the time. This offers significant protection against Malware infection....I would not want all my disks infected at the same time! I am about to purchase a third one so that all my external disks are then all on Thunderbolt.

Basic raid drive enclosure its not NAS but it does seem to do raid I just use the spanned setting 2tb and 4 tb WD greens (just what was spare and doing nothing )as I set up my Synology NAS with WD reds this enclosure will just be a back destination so I only really set to jbod to start then to Spanned (Big) and for all I want it for its definatly fit for purpose seems well made but simple and not over complicated a little noisy due to the fsn and as stated elswhere a bit of Black pvc tape on the front mounted drive light fixes that little problem

Had it for a couple of months now and all is going well. RAIDed the discs using Apple Disc Utility so it shows up as one fairly fast disc. Auto sleeps and wakes fine. The fan can be disconnected easily, just unclip the cover and unplug it. You could put a switch in but I wouldn't bother as there is no sign of any overheating without it. Lights are a bit glaring, wouldn't want it in line of sight. But overall very pleased with it.

I fitted this with two WD Red 6TB drives, connected it to my Macbook Pro using USB 3.0 and it worked straight away. I set it up as RAID and am using it as an external hard drive. So far, it's worked perfectly. My only complaints are that the fan is quite noisy and can be intrusive in a quiet environment and that the LEDs on the front are really bright. I can cover the LEDs but the fan is always on.

This is amazing for the price but it is a cheap bit of kit. I’m using it in JBOD with my IMac. Mounts fast, not very noisy. Only bad thing is that when you unmount and then remove one drive it insists on ejecting the other which is not good for the drive and is annoying. Of course there’s an easy work round, just eject both! Oh well it’s cheap!

3.1.2016

A very good hard drive bay which allowed me to use all my 4 x 3.5 inch hard drives taken my Mac Pro to use with my new iMac. The reason it has 4 stars is because the fan is a little too audible for my liking at around 40db (according to an iPhone app). Being a 2 pin fan, it is proving difficult to find a quieter alternative.
