A hard-drive docking station is one of those gadgets you don't think you'll ever need - until you do. I had accumulated a small stack of old hard-drives from defunct devices and needed a way to examine and/or erase them without having to repeatedly fit them into external cases - the Inateck FD1003 is a really simple-to-use and straightforward solution to that problem. It's simple to connect, just a mains adaptor and a USB-3 cable (which is supplied), and has only one switch which turns it on and off. You simply drop your 2.5" disc through the slot in the spring-loaded trapdoor (the trapdoor swings out of the way completely for 3.5" drives) and push it home to make the connection. Then turn the unit on and after a few moments the drive should mount on your computer and be accessible as normal. Speeds are excellent, I was getting pretty much maximum read/write performance with the different drives I tried, and it all seemed stable and reliable in use - it's probably a good idea to connect the docking station to its own USB port on your computer and avoid busy external USB hubs which can slow things down. During use the blue illuminated bar on the front of the drive flickers to show data activity, but it's not so bright that it becomes distracting. When you've finished accessing your drive just un-mount it from the computer, switch off the docking station and eject the drive using the pop-up button. There are a couple of minor issues with the FD1003 but nothing very serious. The mains adaptor, built into the plug, is a bit chunky compared to some these days, although it gets only slightly warm in use. The casing of the docking station is made from plastic with a noticeable static attraction for dust and fluff - it's not that bad but when you're handling bare components like hard-drives you generally want things to stay as dust-free as possible. My only real peeve was that when a hard-drive is mounted on your computer it will generally appear only as `Inateck Media' and your PC can't see the specific details for that drive -- like the manufacturer, model number or firmware version -- but then you can read most of that from the label on the side of your bare drive anyway. Generally the FD1003 just works and I haven't found anything serious to fault with it - especially if, like me, you only occasionally need to access drives this way and just need an affordable and reliable way to do it. (Disclosure: device was received for review).

Having suddenly fallen victim to a kaput computer, I was very worried that I would lose all my data - especially if I took my laptop to a store and by accident/ignorance all my files are erased through re-formatting. It has happened in the past and I did NOT want to go down that road again. Anyway, I removed my HDD from said dead laptop and it was really easy to slide into the reader - instructions are there but it's all very straightforward for the most part. What I would say is, if you're a Mac user of very basic technical knowledge, proceed with caution. I found myself very confused as I couldn't read or access anything via the reader, nor copy or move any files. Some were saying it's incompatible, others that I needed a download/programme (which had additional costs or time-consuming functions that I simply don't understand) to achieve the simple luxury of plugging it in and viewing my files. Just no - not after spending £25+ on a reader I may only use on occasion.Thankfully I did have access to another PC instead of my Mac. Had I not, I would've found myself in a bit of a tricky situation. On PCs/Laptops it's a whole other ball game - everything is really easy to read when you know where you're going (i.e., finding the files on your specific user account) just like it was off a memory stick. Copying it and moving to an external hard drive/another computer literally couldn't be any easier. It did take me some time but, given the sheer number of files I had to copy, that's not really surprising. I didn't have any issue with the device heating up much like some others have and it was in for a good 1-2 hours.A little pricey for a rare usage item but I really can't put a price on keeping my files when a laptop dies so it's an expense I would pay if it means I don't lose everything.

I wanted one of these not really to back up drives or clone drives which I know it is capable of, what I wanted to do was be able to check hard drives that I have pulled out of old satellite equipment, I sell a few Sky receivers and when one is faulty it seems a shame to scrap the box and hard drive, the Inateck allows me to pop a hard drive in to its slot and quickly tells me if it is working. Ideal.Set up was very easy, I thought I may struggle, I use an Apple iMac and sometimes things don't always work straight out of the box, the Inateck did with out any problems. Slotted a 500 gb SATA hard drive into the slot and it quickly and smoothly found it,the icon popped up on my imac.Cloning the drive would be very straight forward and is something I do intend to do but I wanted to see how easy it was to use as a second drive, the one thing I do like is how easy it is to add things to the external hard drive, I could drag and picture and drop it on the icon and bingo it was on the drive, doesn't get any easier than that. Useful for backing up pictures and files that I want to use on another PC I have that isn't on my network.I intend to use the Inateck when not checking HD's on my wife's window PC which is getting on a bit and could do with more space on the hard drive, I transfer a lot of her files and pictures from the main drive to the Inateck drive, will help her PC run a bit quicker and more efficiently. The docking station come with everything you need to operate, USB3.0 data cable, power supply and user guide.

If you're in the market for a simple one-bay docking station for 3.5" and 2.5" SATA drives then this is definitely a good choice. This was picked up immediately on Windows 10 without any need to install drivers and recognised all drives I have used with it so far (Crucial m4 128GB SSD, Western Digital 1TB Blue HDD and 2x Hitachi 500GB HDDs).Operation is simple, plug in the provided power and USB 3 cables to the rear of the docking station, connect the USB cable to your PC, insert the drive, and hit the big power button on the front. Removing a drive is as simple as ejecting it from within Windows, then powering down the dock, nd pushing on the large lever at the back to pop the drive out.Transfer speeds were decent, but will obviously depend on the specific drive you have inserted, and whether you are connected to your PC via USB 3 or USB 2.The only reason this doesn't get 5 stars is due to it's overall build quality. While it is perfectly stable and solid, it feels plasticky and cheap, definitely showing that it is only a £19.99 product. On mine, the power button can get stuck behind the front of the body, but a little wiggle on the button will free it quite easily.Overall, a good product, but not a 5 stars due to the build quality. Do not let that put you off however as it definitely gets the job done!

My Asus Desktop running Windows 10 Pro crashed and all attemptsa at rebuilding the Boot files, reparing Windows etc, failed. It was up[graded from windows 8.1, to 8.1 Pro and finally to 10 Pro so returning it Factory settings via Rest could not work no matter what I tried. I had over 1TB of critically useful data on the 2 TB Hard Drive so I removed the HDD and connected via an Old USB/ SATA Adapter so that I extract my data. To my amazement, the Drive coould not appear in Windows explorer but showed in Disk Management ... as a PROTECTED GPT Partition! So I could not access the data ... OMG!Read over 200 reviews looking for a HDD Dock or USB/ SATA Adapter that can do the job. After 3 days of intense research on Amazon and a little bit on EBay, I settled for this cute boy. I ordered and it arrived the following day via Prime Delivery and abated breath I made my connections. Within a few minutes I was browing my 2TB Hard Drive after sorting out Windows Permissions - "You don't have permission to access this folder". All my data was there. I saved it to an external 2TB HDD and proceeded to work on prepari8ng my Hard Drive for windows Reinstallation. Made my partitions and ... I am writing this review using the same Computer after a very successful data recovery and Windows 10 Pro Reinstallation.

The first one of these you sent to me did not work properly but since the fault was intermittent and did not show up immediately. I really wasn’t expecting to be able to do anything about it so I put it down to experience and made a mental note not to buy another one..However it was a really pleasant surprise when, after reviewing the drive on here, Inatech contacted me and offered to replace it with a new one! Which was a shock as I really hadn't expected that. That was back in February and I feel I have now had time to thoroughly test the unit and I am pleased to say it seems to work perfectly so I am guessing the fault with the original unit must just have been a glitch.I really have to givethe customer service at Inatech 10 out of 10 for going far beyond what many other companies would do, in today’s throwaway society that makes such a refreshing change. My only negative comment is that after receiving the replacement I felt somewhat badgered by one of the staff at Inatech to amend my negative review before I had been given sufficient time to make sure it worked properly this time

Over the years in changing PCs there’s a tendency to acquire hard drives sans PC. In part it’s difficult to completely destroy a drive as they are so well protected, even with the use of a hammer. But also you never know if some vital document is stored on it.This docking station resolves this problem. You can simply plug your hard drive into the top of the dock and have immediate access to the drive contents. The station has a USB 3 connection so it can access data fast, it supports hot changes so you don’t need to turn it off to replace the drive, and it looks rather smart as well.I suspect everyone should have one of these in their drawer with all your old cables and outdated IT stuff. This is an excellent solution to a difficult solution which means you don’t have to take your current PC apart to read a hard drive - if of course it even has a drive bay these days.Throughly recommended. Note that this was supplied for review purposes.

Not very tech savvy at all, I needed a lifeline after my 7 year old iMac died on me. I knew that the problem wasn't HDD related so one YouTube video later I managed to remove it from the stricken machine. I tried putting it in an enclosure I also had but that decided to croak as well. I was looking at other replacement enclosures when I came across this item and figured that it would maybe be a better choice as I have other HDs from other computers. I only chose this particular model on the strength and number of other reviews. Anyway, connected it up to a new iMac, popped in the drive, powered it up and as if by magic it showed up on the desktop as an external drive. £20 and all my data back.Could not be simpler and I could not be happier.NOTE: Before it came up on the desktop I was prompted by the iMac to see if I wanted to use the drive for TimeMachine back up which, obviously, I declined.

Bought to start creating a backup of my DVD and Blu-ray movie collection. When purchasing I was a little sceptical of the claimed transfer speed, having bought similar hard disk drive to USB adapters etc, only to find the transfer rates very poor. I popped in an old 500GB Seagate SATA drive to test it out and was pleasantly surprised to see how quickly it transferred data. Now eagerly awaiting delivery of a SATA-3 4TB drive, to start my backup for real.It has in my opinion the design been well thought out, large power button on the front; fairly long activity light which fills with blue while being accessed and will not look out of place on most buyers desks. Wanting to leave the unit on my desk permanently, diskless, I’d preferred the drive bay to have had a cover to stop dust getting inside. On the whole extremely pleased with my purchase.

Plug in the provided power supply and USB 3.0 cable (both supplied) and into a spare USB 3.0 socket and away you go, no need for any drivers. This unit will allow you to simply insert a hard drive or ssd drive as there are both fitting slots inside, it is as simple as placing a plug in a wall socket.I have been using this unit for a few months, my review does not take into account of speeds as I will leave that up to the pros. I am just giving an overall simply plug and play review.Excellent device from Inoteck, now when I buy I look for their equipment, as some other reviews I read before buying this one had more issues from customers, where these had good rep which is important to me as there are literally dozens of vendors that seem to sell the same products when some appear to be cheaper, you get what you pay for.Recommended. 5*****

Just set this up. It worked immediately on Windows 8. Right now it has a 3-4 year old Western Digital 250GB mechanical hard drive in it. I plan to use recycled HDD and SSD drives to back up video work. Currently backing up from a Western Digital Black 1TB drive inside a fast 4790k machine to this drive and was getting 38MB/S on USB 2 slot before moving to USB 3.0 on my PC and seeing 125MB/S average. Not bad from one mechanical HDD to another. One gripe - it is very light due to the plastic used in its construction. It does not feel very robust. I would pay £5 more for a really nice heavy jobbie that I knew would take abuse.mechanical drives are held fairly well but I will be concentrating very hard to avoid knocking the desk.

Saved my data from what I thought were inaccessible drives one a sata and the other a ssd. This validated for me that the suspect drives had survived unscathed a water damaged PC and has set me on the path to see if the water damage may have been a short on the motherboard!Easy just to slot whichever drive to use in, though I would caution when swapping them around to make sure the drive in use is powered down/dismounted first before removing from the docking station. When not in use the cover flap offers protection from errant fluff, dust or evil particles wanting to clog things up!

This is the third SATA docking station I've had in two years as the previous two from other brands failed to pick up on otherwise healthy drives. The Inateck drive has been going strong since its purchase and whilst it does feel a little cheaply made and I've not huge faith in the front power button lasting too long, its been a solid performing dock and if it ever failed to read a drive, it was because the drive was already in trouble. If this one does ever let me down, I will be replacing it with another. Would definitely like to see the front button improved though.

I used this drive dock to access some old drives lying around and retrieve once lost files. The transfer speeds were good with USB3 used for the connection. It exposes itself as a SCSI device, and it works on Windows and Linux. Build quality is okay - it's cheap, but not to the point where you have to be delicate. I managed to retrieve files from a drive with bent power pins and no (further) damage was done to either the dock or the drive. I would definitely recommend if you need this sort of peripheral.

Needed something to read my drives from a problematic and aging WD NAS (blue lights) . I have two 500GB WD Caviar drives and this had no problem with reading both. The only trouble I had was with Windows Ten , but found a free recovery programme called "Drive Drill" which read and recovered everything I needed from both drives. I can now format both drives using the Inateck kit and use for storage/cloning. Recommended product , even if it does feel a bit flimsey.
