First of all i would like to say my initial impression was rather good. The box is abit cheap looking but its the box what matters is on the inside. upon opening the box and handling the enclosure i wasn't blown away by the material of the case, as others have mentioned it feels cheap...? it feels better but slightly similar to those homogenous enclosures you can buy for like £2 from ebay. Also in the box was a faux leather sleeve, the 3.0 cable which is quite long compared to those supplied in other enclosure, also in the box was a cheap screwdriver which did not strip or damage the screws on the enclosure.ConsAs for the cons the main thing that i did not like was that the controller board had some real shoddy soldering done to it.Although in my experience this is common amongst enclosures, the solder connections do not look very professionally done and look like something a friend of mine can doo, and as some people may know with below standard solder connections its only really a time bomb, When i have time i might just remove the solder and make fresh connections.Another issue was connecting the cable, upon connecting it i felt i was about to break it.Final issue is that the drive is not very flush with the inside, if i had a baby i would give it to them to use as a rattle.ProsThis 3.0 enclosure is very very fast. on my first test i transferred 5.25gb of data and it took 70 seconds to transfer (i timed it). i was well and truly blown away with that speed. The convent light which switches from blue to red dependant on whether connected to a 2.0 or 3.0 bus port. The drive also does not get too hot when transferring data.on conclusion, i am happy with this drive but somethings could be better. The speed however well and truly makes up for it, i just hope it doesn't break on me anytime soon, would definitely recommend it.

I bought this product to replace an ailing Iomega 320Gb USB Hard drive (model LPHD-UP, if you're interested). I had no end of problems, with the drive seeming to simply lose power. Tried two different Y-USB cables (to ensure there was enough power), had the whole thing sent back to iomega who replaced or refurbished it. Came to the conclusion that there was a faulty connection somewhere and decided to try repurposing the drive. So to the IcyBox, initial impressions were very good. Product comes with a USB3 cable, a leather carrying pouch and some instructions. It is very easy to install a hard drive, requiring only four screws to be removed and then the drive slides in. When connected to a USB3 port, the activity light is blue, for USB2 the light is red. I think this is a nice touch.Performance wise, I ran CrystalDiskMark 3.0.1 on USB3 USB 2 for comparison and found that sequential read and write rates were doubled from around the 30MB/s mark to 60MB/s. Random reads for 4K blocks were hardly different (which I attribute to the mechanical hard drive) and the larger 512K random read and writes imrpoved from 21MB/s to 31MB/s and 29MB/s to 35MB/s respectively. To summarise, if you have a USB2 drive that is too slow and you have USB3 on your computer, the IcyBox is a well made, easy to use and good performing product that I am happy to recommend. The price isn't too bad either ;)

My computer crashed a few days ago and I needed an external enclosure in order to get all the data back. I bought this one and it work really well. It can work with only one USB and is compatible USB 2.0 (also 1.1 it is written on the box). With the USB 2.0, the speed is not extraordinary (~25 MB/s to read a file but the write speed was really good (~56 MB/s which is faster than when it was in my laptop). This is sequential read/write with an hard drive of 320GB@5400t/min. I could not test the USB 3.0. I have to wait for my new laptop to do it.Concerning the workmanship, the metal look a little bit ship when you have it in your hand but the hard drive does not move in the enclosure and seems to be well protected. The brushed aluminum and the leather case look really nice. You also get a small screw driver.I have a small problem however. When I plug the USB entirely, it does not work. I have to unplug it a little bit but it is not really an issue.I have another hard. I think I will buy the same case.In conclusion, I think it worth its price and I do not regret my choice.

I would echo the other reviews in terms of build quality - this isn't as good as my other Icy Box caddy (IB-290St) but then it's a very cheap caddy. The Micro-USB connector to the caddy doesn't seem hugely secure so probably will only work safely on a flat surface like a desk (I've used external drives and caddies just balancing on my lap but I wouldn't trust this drive for that). No power required - drives off of the USB port which is good.As for performance, I stuck in an Intel X-25M SSD drive and hooked this up to the USB 3.0 port on my Macbook Pro and the performance is rock solid - about 195MB/sec reads and 135MB/sec writes when copying a 30GB file to the local drive (about 10GB per minute)- to be honest the Intel drive is probably the limiting factor here. Random Read/Write IO for small blocks (4MB) is also very high.So if you're lucky enough to have a spare SSD hanging around and a USB 3.0 port, then this is a very cheap solution to creating a very fast external drive.

I already had an Icybox eSATA enclosure which was great. This USB 3.0 enclosure is a lighter and cheaper construction, but still looks fine and am confident that it's robust enough for some serious daily use. I bought two of them and both are working fine a month later. So why 4 stars then? I use these enclosures to hold OCZ Vertex SSDs. The OCZ Vertex 4 SSD is currently (May 2012) refusing to work in this enclosure. An OCZ Vertex 3 SSD works fine though. Conclusion.. there's a compatibility issue with the OCZ Vertex 4 SSD and this enclosure. It's with OCZ support right now and may be sorted with a future firmware update. If you have an OCZ Vertex 3 SSD though.. it will absolutely FLY in this enclosure over USB 3.0..a true quantum leap in data transfer speeds and a truly amazing solution for hosting virtual machines without fear of disk crashes.

I bought this as an upgrade to a USB 2.0 enclosure I was using on a 7200rpm Seagate Momentus drive. This enclosure feels a slightly more cheaply made than others I own, but for the price point this is acceptable. As soon as you plug it into a USB 3.0 port however, you will forget about this instantly! The speed is simply mind blowing. I copied a 1GB file over in under 15 seconds. Crystal mark shows me that it is actually performing better than the 5400rpm drive fitted in my laptop (84MB/s compared to 77MB/s on sequential reads and writes). The only speed limiting factor seems to be the disk itself. In summary, this is a fantastic and cheap upgrade to a USB 2.0 enclosure, giving a very noticeable speed boost on traditional mechanical hard drives - I can only imagine how fast it would be if you put an SSD into it!

I bought this, then I read the reviews after it was dispatched. Maybe this was a mistake. I don't know but I've not had any problems with the unit itself so far.Easy to set up with my SATA HDD that I pulled out of an old laptop and works well with the USB 3.0 ports on my MacBook. I get good read/write speeds, I dont have to use a power cord. Hey, what more could a man want? The only downside is that the supplied case that came with it was too small and pretty much fell apart within a few days.

To those unsure, there is no power supply required (or included) it runs through USB3 only which is great for portability. The USB3 cable is good quality unlike someone mentioned in another review?!The metal feels quite cheap, as does the supplied case but the price point reflects this - still a sturdy enclosure! The Icy Box writing isn't as glaringly obvious as it looks on the pictures thankfully and not only would I recommend this enclosure, I'm going to buy a couple more!

it is made of light aluminum metal, comes with thick usb3.0 cable, which is compatible with my other usb3.0 drives. My original usb3.0 cable from WD MyPassport is not working on my Samsung RF711 USB3.0 Port, so I can use the cable from Icy Box to replace the outdated low quality cable. The installation is simple, it takes just a couple of minutes to finish setup.

It is a good product, and the controller IC is also reliable, but it only lack of showing S.M.A.R.T information of your hard drive. So, we can not check health condition of a hard drive. That is a pity. Overall, it's good, both written and read speed are over 90MB/s (based on Seagate 7200.4 hard drive)

3.12.2012

Good value and seems well made. The only foreseeable difficulty would be that the connector on the enclosure seems to a proprietary one - not the usual USB type which does not fit. Not a problem because the supplied cable works fine.

24.3.2013

I have used these HDD boxes before and they are very reliable. The come with a small screw driver so you don't have to go hunting around for your small screw drivers. This is not a HDD it comes only as a box to put a drive in.

4.10.2012

Brushed metal finish finish is smart and cable appears very heavy duty. PCB looks fragile but I had no problems. Easy to fit 2.5" drive into case and works well.

12.12.2012

Can't fault it. Easy to add the hard drive and it works perfectly. It's slightly bigger than I expected, compared to my WD Passport.
