I used a 2TB NAS drive for a couple of years and it drove me mad being so slow... about 5MB/s. I also had a couple of USB 2 caddies with 1TB drives inside. They were much faster than the NAS drive but still a bit slow. I saw this and thought it seemed like a very useful thing to own if you've got a few drives around to swap in and out.I have a couple of drives that are hardly ever used because they're just backups. With this, I can just plug them in and switch them on whenever I want.I usually keep it populated with three large drives that are full of videos and simply switch it on when I want to view something. Mine is connected via eSata and transfer speeds are similar to my desktop internal HDD drive...in other words, lightening fast.I've never tried hot-swapping a drive, I always turn the unit off before doing that. I just put the drives I want in it before powering up my computer. Switching the individual drives on and off while in the docking station doesn't cause a problem while my recently built desktop is running.I tried it on USB 3. I can't say I noticed much difference to eSata, but prefer eSata so I have my USB 3 ports still available.I took one star away because the fans are simply so noisy that I can't stand to use them!!Without them the drives are only reaching about 38 degrees. I also think it's a dust trap in the slots where the drives go, so maybe I'll make a cover with a slow and quiet 120mm fan to keep things cool.To sum up, it takes up less space than the NAS Drive and three external caddies I used to have. It has much faster file transfers. I can build a "library" of drives and just plug them in when I want - like VHS tapes with a hundred films on them. I haven't tried a disc copy yet, but I will in time. One of my better buys and highly recommended.

I needed to recover some data from a Buffalo Terastation that had gone awry. After considering buying SATA -> USB cables for all four drives I settled on this. I had 4 hard drives that were configured as RAID 5.Using this and some data recovery software, the data recovery was a breeze. This is a brilliant bit of kit. Makes copying data incredibly easy. Any old hard drives can be just dropped into here once they have been removed from any caddy. The unit connects up to your computer via USB 3 (cable provided) but works with USB 2 too. Two power leads are provided, a Continental 2 pin type as well as a UK standard 3 pin plug. There are two fans within the unit to keep things running cool if required although these are independently controlled so can be left turned off. They can also be set to any chosen speed which is a nice touch. Yes it's a little noisy with the fans turned on full but this is not unreasonable as I never expected it to be a silent operator 10/10

Didn't buy from Amazon but thought I would aid anyone thinking about a purchase.Mine is connected via eSata so I can't make any comments about usb connectivity.I have 4 x 2TB drives installed in the unitThe independent power switches make removing the drives a breeze, quick and painless. Powering on a drive results in the drive appearing in windows about 20 seconds later. The unit has 2 adjustable fans, 1 per bank of drives, which when turned up to full speed are a little bit noisy. They are noisier than my pc but the unit is sat on top of my desk for ease of use.I think the price is a bit too high for what the unit is but it has worked perfectly for approx 4 months with no issues at all.Would heartily recommend buying one of these if you need hot swappable storage with ease of access.I would have given it 5 stars if not for the slightly high price.

So far, so excellent. The bay recognizes all kinds of hard drives, even the slightly damaged ones - at least more than my motherboard used to do. Data transfer is very fast. Hardware looks sturdy enough and durable. I'll update this post in case it isn't so.It would be cool if it had an option for USB-powering, so as to render the electricity adapter optional, but I guess it's technically difficult.A great purchase. Always useful to have one of these.

I've had an old 3.5" SATA drive in my PC which hasn't worked for almost a year, but I finally got access to it with this. There's no software to install - just plug it in and drop a drive into it and up it pops in Windows. The USB3 cable could be a little longer - it's only around 18 inches, so if I ever need to pull my PC out I'll have to remember to unplug this first lest it be dragged off the back of my desk.

After several hours of searching for and reveiwing Sata docking stations, I found this one to offer the best application for my needs. The product arrived the next day and once plugged in and a Sata drive inserted away I went, very easy to use no drivers or software to install, straight out of the box and ready to use. A1 product highley recommended.

Up to 4 x 4 TB drives. Includes variable speed internal fans. Goes to sleep and takes a bit to wake up but works very well on USB 3 (recommended) . Individual controls for each drive dock. Bigger than the picture but looks neat and it does take up less space than 3 x external drives in individual cases.

Does what it's meant to - allows me to quickly and easily extricate files from SATA drives on my computer. Computer sees the drives as internal ones, which makes life easier.Could probably be used to attach an existing drive permanently but I haven't tried this.

This is a quirky item, brilliant idea, nicely designed and works great - I can pop 4 large capacity drives in all at once and do a search so easily. The USB 3 is fast - I think it's a great addition to any busy work station. Surprisingly affordable, too.

This seems to do the job perfectly. It does what it says on the box with no issues and it is quite good looking on my, otherwise, minimal desk. I should also say that it is great that can get an additional hard drive from a laptop should I ever need it.

Bought this as a replacement for my old Startech dock with an older chipset that couldn't see the full capacity on new 4TB Hitachi Deskstar (7200rpm) disks. Pleased to say that this dock can see the full 4TB. Worked straight out the box on my mac too!

The item works well for me, though you should pay attention to the warning in the product description, that your eSATA interface must support the port multiplier feature. (I had to update the BIOS of my HP Microserver to make this happen).

I brought this to overcome my NAS drive failing. Using a linux reader with the docking station I was able to retrieve all my data.I have swap in and out 2 olds drives on a daily bases and it never fails.

THis is a useful piece of kit. Together with the Startech.com SATA to 2.5 inch or 3.5 inch IDE Hard Drive Adapter for HDD Docks it allows me to access any spare HDD of any size.

Simple to use and flexible in using different drives and capacities at same time. Saves a lot of messing around when changing drives. Great product
