First of all, this is a bedside clock radio. It is intended to be used next to your bed, not in your kitchen or lounge. Of course you're perfectly able to use it in different rooms, but it has been designed to be used as an alarm clock to wake you up in the morning, and it does that job admirably. It's a nice looking piece of kit. The back half is a fabric-covered speaker. In front of this there are a couple of rows of buttons, and the front is black plastic with a large illuminated display which is easy to read. It looks and feels quite premium, unlike my previous Pure bedside radio which was completely plastic. It works straight out of the box. Insert the supplied mains adapter, uncoil the aerial, and plug it in next to your bed. It sets itself up, scanning for radio stations and setting the clock (which also sets itself automatically in the spring and autumn), and no intervention is required. Once it is set up, you can turn it on by pressing the power button, and you can go ahead and set alarms and presets etc.Lots of people have complained in reviews about the buttons. Yes, to set an alarm you have to press multiple buttons, but it's a simple process, and it gives you lots of options. You can set three different alarms, which can be turned on and off with two clicks. Each alarm can be set to sound on desired days (7 days a week, weekdays only, weekends only, one time), at a time of your choice, at a volume of your choice, and you can get it to play a tone (beeping) or the last station you listened to, or a chosen preset. This is why there are numerous clicks required to set an alarm - flexibility! I have one alarm set which I only ever turn off if I'm on holiday, which goes off every weekday at 6.30 to get me up for work. I have another which I have set to go off about 90 minutes earlier than this, and I only ever turn this off on occasions I'm travelling to one of our offices for which I have to get up at 5AM. The third alarm I use as an "as and when" alarm, and if say I want to get up early on a Saturday, or if I'm going on holiday and need to be up ridiculously early, I'll set this as a "one time" alarm. It's really easy, and you only ever have to fiddle with the alarms if you want to change them, which in my experience doesn't happen very often - most of the time I just leave it alone for my "normal" wake up, or do two clicks and I've turned on a special alarm. Simple. It's also explained really clearly in the instruction leaflet. The other thing people have complained about in reviews is the display. When the room is bright, the display is bright, so if you're in your bedroom on a sunny afternoon with the curtains open, or you're in there at night with the lights on, the display will be bright. If the room is darker, the display dims. This is designed so that you won't be dazzled if you wake up in the night and roll over to look at your clock. It's perfectly readable in the dark. If you don't like the fact that the display dims, you can change it in the menu! You can set the display to be on at a specific brightness all the time, or to be automatic. You can also set different brightness levels for when the clock is idle (ie when the radio isn't playing) and for when it is active (ie when the radio is on). Out of the box, the display is on automatic brightness when it is idle, and bright when the radio is playing, so if you're listening to music, or if your alarm goes off, the display goes really bright. Easy to change, if you go into the menu.Sound-wise it's great. Music and voice sound fine to me, and the levels are good - not too much bass or treble. All in all I'm really pleased with the radio. I was worried after I saw some of the reviews but in my experience it's a good bit of kit.

First, I am a massive Pure fan, this being the sixth I have owned - one for each room of my house, plus a pocket radio. I bought this after, strangely, watching the excellent film "The Lost of Honour of Christopher Jefferies" (well worth a watch!). In it, he has an alarm clock radio, being woken by the dulcet tones of John Humphrey's on BBC Radio 4's Today programme. I fancied that as a start to my day, too.The radio is excellent in design, a lovely stylish piece of design for any bedroom. The pictures of the item reflect it totally accurately. The display is excellent; it genuinely does dim to a level in the dark which is clearly visible without casting light into the room. The off-white plastic and grey speaker fabric look classy and the subtle tones lt the object segue nicley into the room. The sound is among the best of any Pure radio I have had - not as bassy like the Evoke series, nor tinny. It's volume goes plenty loud enough to mean I can listen to it from my study across the landing. Conversely, the volume goes low enough to be able to fall asleep with the volume low enough to hear for comfort, but not loud enough to the words being spoken and hence become distracted from sleep. The volume is far more closely-adjustable than all the other Pure radios I have. The instructions are diagrammatic and must be followed logically to understand how to operate the radio. Once you have understood this and got the hang of how things work, it is very simple, clear and intuitive.ALSO - you can set the radio to wake you up to a different station than that you fell asleep to. When the alarm goes, it begins from the lowest and climbs to the level of volume that you will have chosen when setting the alarm - i.e. plenty loud enough to wake you for sure! When the alarm does go and you have woken, pressing the volume down" button will lower the volume to that of your choice, without turning the sound off. Pressing any of the "back row" buttons turns off the alarm as you would a normal alarm clock, but in doing so you turn of the radio, which you probably don't want. There is also an option to be woken up by a tone, but I haven't used that.

Having previously returned two DAB clock radios, this one gives me exactly what I was looking for; Easy to operate in the dark, large easy to read display, adjustable display brightness and decent sound. Not much to ask of a DAB digital alarm clock but very difficult to find in one package at a reasonable price.I'm not easily impressed and my expectations often exceed reality but this product bucks the trend and to help others decide I've taken some time to list what impresses me most together with the main feautures found in an online manual.* LED's (time) are seven segment, white on black and 28mm high - perfect when eyesight is less than 100%* Display dims and brightens with ambient light- or set level so you have as much or as little light as you want in your room at night* Sound gradually ramps up when alarm comes on and ramps down when alarm goes off - adjustable levels and no sudden shocks to the system* Logical operation - does not require a manual to set basic functionsWhat you want to know but cant find in the sellers description -MAIN DISPLAY:Current timeAM/PM indicatorSignal strengthAlarm set indicatorsKitchen timer indicatorSleep timer indicatorStation name, information and menu optionsSource indicator (DR= digital radio, FM= FM radio)Volume indicatorMENU ...Adjust bass and trebleAdjust display brightness when switched on or in standbyAdjust display backlight durationDISPLAY OPTIONS WITH RADIO ON:Station NameScrolling TextSignal StrengthDateTimeTime and DateCLOCK SETTINGS:Time formatDate FormatSnooze TimeFM STEREO:Mono / Stereo (for use with headphones)BUTTONS:Source: Digital or FM radio.Alarms: Set or cancel 3 individual alarms.Preset: Store up to 10 digital or 10 FM radio stationsMenu: Various settingsPower: On and standby.Volume/Select: Volume / station selectSleep: Sleep timerSOCKETS:USB power connector (mini USB)USB connector for charging phone or tabletStereo headphone socket

I've had Pure DAB alarm clocks before, and this is the best one so far in my opinion.Maybe it's because I've had others that the process of setting an alarm is 2nd nature, but I don't have any problems with any of the menu features as some people seem to have.Straight out of the box, unfurled the aerial wire, plugged it in and waited about 30 seconds while it set itself up.I literally had to do nothing, it set the correct time and tuned in to multiple DAB stations. I then just scrolled through until I found my chosen station and saved it as a preset by holding the preset button down. The Alarms are great, I have the first one set to weekdays at 6:30am, thev2nd alarm set for 8am for weekends, and have the 3rd alarm set for Once for those other odd occasions.Snooze works at 10 min intervals. The DAB (or FM which seems just as good) wakes you up by gradually increasing the volume to the max volume that you have set when setting the alarm. I set at 10 which is loud enough. Tone is also an option but not tested that. The sound of the radio is good, the best I've had so far for a clock radio, mellow but with adjustment for bass & treble. Plenty loud enough for the bedroom. Headphone socket on the back as well if you need it as well as a USB connection on the back for your phone if you want to charge it up.The display that a lot of people seem to not like, in my opinion is great. Big clear numbers, bright during the day and auto adjusting to very dim at night. In a dark bedroom the numbers are very clear without dazzling you at night or lighting up the room. You can manually set the brightness if you don't like the auto settings but I think they are great. All in all a smart looking, good sounding, good value DAB alarm clock that wakes you up gently and with an auto setup that does a lot for you straight out of the box.I'm going to buy another for my wife's side of the bed as I really like it.

This is my third DAB alarm and the first to match the reliability and easy of use of my old Sony ICF-C318 FM alarm. My other attempts were a wildly unreliable Philips AJB1002/05 and a Pure Siesta, the dispiriting grandfather of this model. It’s hard to believe how wrong they got it.Pure has really stepped up both their industrial design and interaction design for this model. The first Siesta Mi was a bit of a car crash on both fronts, with an ugly, cheap-feeling case and a horrific system of menus for simply turning an alarm on and off. By contrast, the Rise looks great and feels solid, and setting and changing the alarms is simple and intuitive. The buttons feel lovely and the fabric speaker covering is a nice touch. The display is much easier to read, although the numbers are maybe a bit narrow and squashed together for reading at a glance. I remain a bit skeptical about the auto-adjusting brightness. As with previous models, when you try to use the menus, your hand casts a shadow and dims the display! However, they do seem to have cracked the elusive night-time brightness level—the display remains clear and readable without lighting up the whole bedside cabinet.I waited until after the clocks went forward before reviewing and can confirm it handles this properly. (Shouldn’t need saying, but you’d be surprised). The USB charging and third alarm are nice touches. (I use the third one for weekdays when I’m on holiday). The price is perhaps a little high, but ultimately worth it for a DAB radio that finally has the kinks worked out.

This is the best alarm clock I've ever owned. I've been looking around for a while to get one with all the features I want - namely easy setting, dual alarm, battery back up and different weekend and weekday alarms. This one exceeds my specifications on all counts. It sets itself from the radio, so setting the time is no issue. For the alarm, the menu lets you adjust the alarm times backwards and forwards, for minutes and hours separately. There is no battery, but it keeps your settings when power is lost nonetheless, including radio stations and alarms, and it sets the time when it comes back on automatically. It has not one, not two, but three alarms, and they can be set to weekday, weekend, seven day, or only once (i.e. go off once and then cancel), and they can be really easily turned on and off, just two clicks. The radio reception and quality is brilliant - for a clock radio; don't expect hifi quality but the DAB radio is miles better an FM tuner. I don't use it as a radio but it is a fully functioning DAB radio with 25 presets and everything so it would be good for that too. It looks great as well, the back has some kind of web/cloth covering. The only downsides I can think of are 1) the automatic display is sometimes too dim, although I can still always still read it at a squint, and 2) when I bought it it was 70 quid - but frankly considering how much I use it (every day) this seems well worth it.

I have had this clock radio now for a few months and can honestly say it is THE ONE I have been waiting for!It seems like PURE have looked at all the reviews of other DAB Clock Radios and produced this radio without the faults of the others.I used to have the Roberts Dreamtime clock radio but have since relegated it to my work bench radio....they're not a patch on the Siesta Rise. For a start you can set 3 different alarms....and you don't have to have the radio on to set them! When the radio comes on in the morning it starts quietly (like others do) but then reaches a max. volume that you have set yourself....genius! (unlike Dreamtime!) The display is large and very clear, the function buttons are easy to use,the DAB signal is perfect...even with the wire aerial dangling behind a unit at the bottom of our bedroom, the sound quality is excellent with a good volume range and no distortion. But my favourite function is the SLEEP mode...whereby you have the radio on as normal before you go to bed...something relaxing like Classic FM from 10pm (Smooth Classics) is my choice, then press the SLEEP button 2, 3, 4..etc times depending how long you want the radio to stay on for...it goes up in 15min segments...then turn your light off, lie down and relax.... The radio will then just fade away at your chosen setting.Well done PURE....you've cracked it with this one!

I bought this to replace a cheap FM radio alarm clock that I have been struggling with. My old one had a very bright display which was contributing to poor sleep and also the radio reception was terrible, so I decided to do some research to find a replacement. After reading specifications and feedback for many different brands and models, I settled on this one and I am so glad that I did! I love the display which dims automatically when the lights go out, this helps to improve sleep quality and I have definitely woken up fewer times in the night, even sleeping right through on more than one occasion (which is rare for me).The DAB radio reception is fantastic and I love that you can set the alarm so that it comes on to the station that you want (regardless of what you were listening to previously) and starts quietly then gradually rises to the volume that you want. There are a number of different customisable settings and it is very easy to understand how to do it all. Like many others who have bought this, I didnt bother with the small leaflet that comes with the radio and just downloaded the full manual from the Pure website. Its very long document so I used it on my laptop screen to set everything up and then I printed off just the alarm settings to keep in my bedside drawer in case I need them in future.

ProsIt's nice and smallIt has a USB charging port which is at the back (others have ports at the side or top which leaves an ugly cable poking out)It has three alarms and you change the volume of the alarm and station (doesn't have to be the station you listened to last)It has adjustable brightness which can be done manually or automatically. I have it on auto and the dimmest setting is great - you can see the time in the dark but it doesn't bring much light in the roomIt has an adjustable snooze timeSound quality is goodIt has a shoelace aerial instead of telescopic which I preferIt looks nice and seems to be good qualityIt isn't too bigComes with a 3 year guaranteeConsIt's expensive (I thinkit should be £20 cheaper)The instruction manual is poorThe digits displaying the time are a bit big - no big deal but I am being picky because of the priceThe radio comes on quietly and the volume increases gradually - again, I'm being picky hereOverallI've been spoilt by having a Roberts dab alarm clock which worked really well for years, looked good, sounded good, was better value etc but I like this and I am happy with it (I had bought the Majority Abbey first but it was very cheap and nasty). But I think this radio is a bit overpriced. I've knocked one star off because of the price

I have had a pure cronos alarm for about 10 years now and it was struggling to receive a signal so I treated myself to a new one. Its sounds great, and looks good. I like the auto dim feature of the clock at night, the bigger numbers, the quite start to the alarm , being able to set different times for the weekend and week days. The buttons are easy to use on top and it charges my phone overnight. I found the directions easy to follow and similar to my old model. My disappointments were that I think that this is not anymore advanced than my old one, it doesn't have a remote like my old one which is very useful if your alarm is on the other side of the room, which is where I would like to put it as the number are big enough to see further away. also according to the description and instructions it says you can set the alarm duration for up to 2 hours, which is a feature I wanted but this is not the case the display does not have that option when setting the alarm. It also can't be too tricky to have a setting for different days, I need a different alarm for different days of the week and there is not enough.

This clock radio is very good in some respects, but could be better. The radio reception in both DAB an FM is good, but could be improved with a better aerial, the wire one is OK, but I had to extend it to get good reception on some stations. A telescopic aerial would be a great addition. The display is good, at night it dims brilliantly, but it is not so good during the day, the sensor is a bit sensitive. The alarm is good, it wakes you up with an increasing volume, much better than just blasting on. The thing that disappoints me the most though is the rather muted sound. For a radio costing this much, the audio quality should be much better, it sounds quite muffled. I would have expected the sound to be better, and it is for this reason that I have only given it a 4 rather than a 5. It also gets a plus point for the way it works after a power cut. The time is automatically reset once the power returns, and the alarm functions are restored. This is a definite benefit, especially as it doesn't have a battery back up. Overall it is a good clock radio, but could be better.

The star feature here (Rise S - also on other Rise versions I think) is the automatic display brightness control. Finally a bedside clock which is just bright enough to read the time in the middle of the night and also bright enough during the day. Ever since my first self-build 7 segment LED bedside clock 40 years ago this has been a problem. Pure have finally solved it.It would be five stars for that alone apart from three niggles:- the bluetooth only works as an input, it will not drive a speaker or headphone.- given that the placement of the headphone socket underneath at the back is totally stupid- no dedicated preset buttons. To select/change the preset station you have to go through the entire list starting at preset one. This can mean up to 12 button presses to get to the preset you want. (go backwards as well as forwards through the 20 if you can remember what the number of the one you want is)None of these are showstoppers, and the excellent display mitigates them to the extent of 4 stars.

OK, so its not the best sounding Pure radio you can buy, but for the size its much better than the competition, but most importantly for me it ticks all the boxes for a bedroom nighttime radio.+ Volume can be turned down very low without feedback or humming+ Backlight can be configured to 'turn off' on timeout, not just dim.+ One touch Sleep function so radio will turn off automatically, up-to 90mins.Things I wish it had:+ One touch station presets (or individual preset buttons), as it is you have to navigate the interface.+ Full user manualOn the subject of the UI, its not the most intuitive I've ever used, but at the same time its no worse than other compact radio alarm clock interfaces I've used, the main omission is a good user manual, which for this money isn't good enough.Overall though its perfectly usable and does have some nice touches, like existing settings being marked with an asterisk denoting the current value.

This clock is certainly more expensive than most if not all others on the market, but you get what you pay for. DAB/FM, an auto-dimming display, and great sound I really like having 3 alarms - one each for weekdays and weekends, and a third for those one-off alarms, so you don't need to reset any other alarm and remember to put it back; that's caught me out a few times with previous clocks! Setup is completely automatic - it gets the time from radio signals, which means the time changes automatically when daylight saving starts or ends; this also removes the need for a backup battery like most clocks have, because if the power blips during the night it simply gets the correct time again.Sound quality is very good too.Highly recommended - look at it this way: you don't buy an alarm clock very often, but use it far more frequently than you may realise, so may as well get a good one :)

The radio is compact, light, and the cables are slim. The audio quality is strong and stills sounds great played loud (I echo what another reviewer has said that the quality suffers when played at the lowest volumes).I really appreciate the ability to plug my phone in the back, saving a plug socket. Everything about the radio makes it fantastic for your bedside table. My only complaint is that the radio is not entirely intuitive to set up fresh out of the box, and the manual provided tells you very little. A lot of the buttons perform multiple functions depending on what you pressed before, and it took me a lot of experimenting before I found the Scan function.I would advise looking for a full manual online when setting this up.All in all, great purchase- I bought as a result of this coming up on a ‘best radios of 2017’ list, and so far, so good! Definitely recommend.
