This is quite an amazing product. While the price tag seems a little steep at first when you see how involved the mechanisms are and how robust it feels when it's fully assembled, it seems like an excellent deal. The only major issue I can foresee with this is that it's labelled as for ages 10+. This took the best part of 7 hours for me to complete and left the tips of my fingers a little raw, so it's certainly not something the average 10 year old is going to be able to complete by themselves. Under supervision, though, it's great, and seeing how the various mechanisms involved fit together will definitely be good for getting an understanding of how that kind of thing works in general (withthe gears and steering systems being fully functional). The instructions themselves are generally easy to follow, and the only major issue I had assembling them was my own fault (easily fixed, at least). There are, however, a couple of parts where some of the larger parts are put together which are somewhat unclear, though still not a deal breaker as with some logical thinking there is usually only one way for things to actually fit together. For reference, I also noticed a minor error in the instructions; step 356 (page 216 of 270. The instruction manual for this is about half an inch thick) lists the incorrect amount of a certain piece as 1 when it should be 2. Certainly not a big enough oversight to ruin the experience, but noticeable all the same. This was only a mild inconvenience as I like to prepare the pieces for use in advance of each step.Once assembled everything works very well and very smoothly. Decals applied during construction also nicely explain what each knob and lever does graphically, so younger players can still enjoy the assembled product, even if the assembly itself may well be too much for them.Overall, very happy. Would give 4.5 stars if I could, but I think the small issues I had stopped it from being perfect.

This is a nice mid-range Technic model. It's significantly more expensive than the bare-bones ones with a couple of hundred pieces, but is also usefully cheaper than the huge motorised affairs. You get around a thousand pieces (although as with most recent Technic, the majority of those are joining pins), and there are some interesting mechanisms to build. The lorry has eight wheel steering operated by knobs on top of the cab - the front and back wheels turn in different directions. The crane jib can be angled up and down, extended and retracted, and the cable winched in and out, and the entire jib is on a rotating platform. The model looks pretty impressive when completed - unlike some other recent Technic sets, this is a generic crane rather than an officially-licensed replica of a real piece of equipment, so it has some generic stickers to add colour. The model is around 40cm long, and the jib extends to just under twice that, so it's fairly big.The instructions are well up to LEGO's usual standard, and the yellow colour of many of the parts makes them much clearer than some other sets I have built recently. There is a single volume of instructions; 400 or so steps across 260 pages. Pieces are split into three numbered sets of bags, so the hunting for pieces is reduced somewhat - LEGO seem to be very inconsistent in how many numbered bags they use in Technic models; this one could probably have done with a couple more, but it's not too bad. An experienced builder can expect to finish this in 2-3 hours; a young child who is still learning about Technic - the set is aimed at ages 10 and up - will probably take longer.A nice addition to the Technic range, particularly suited to someone who hasn't the time, money or experience to build the enormous rough terrain crane!

Okay, this is one of the tougher builds I have done. I will readily admit I had a mini meltdown about 3/4 of the way through as suddenly the boom arm did not work. Cue the other half checking online builds and going through the remainder of the instruction book. His advice "have faith". Fortunately I did and carried on with the build and suddenly the boom arm is working. He then decided to advise that it has a split differential built in and because I was only halfway through that mechanism that is why it wasn't working all of a sudden. So, if you are like me and check your mechanisms in a Technic build as you go be warned you will have a moment of panic when it suddenly stops operating asexpected. This is definitely one item that would benefit from Instructions Plus but it doesn't have them. I also had an issue early in the build where I had flipped the chassis plates and had to take a few steps back and dismantle pieces to rectify my mistake. So, lots of issues in the build but they were all of my own making and not a problem with the product or the instructions. This was a challenging build but I REALLY enjoyed it. The finished crane is great looking and is operationally fabulous. It even has the bracing legs that you wind up and down for when then crane is in use or being transported.STICKER ALERT! Yes, there are an awful lot of stickers on this build and, as we know, I loathe stickers. I did put them on but most are ever so slightly out of true but I can live with it.Number Of Pieces: 1292Approximate Price Per Piece: £0.07Build Time: 6.25 Hours

Cranes have been a part of the Technic range since the introduction of the first mobile crane (set 855) in 1978.Start with what could well be the only downside to those familiar with previous cranes; much that unlike all the other cranes from the original set (mentioned) to the recent Rough Terrain Crane (set 42082) and new Compact Crawler Crane (set 42097) this is only a one model set. Yes, there are other one model Technic sets, yet they tend to be the bigger, licenced sets such as the Porsche 911 GT3 RS (set 42056), Bugatti (set 42083) and Liebherr 9800 Excavator (set 42100), combined with the size/price point of this set. However, that said, and it is a big however, those familiar, and grew up with the previous sets, not just cranes, will enjoy this set. As with the Compact Crawler Crane launched in August 2019, it is back to the heart of what Technic sets are. And that is where the appeal lays; it is Technic through and through. The build took about no more than 9 hours, on and off, over several days. It is not an overly complicated build when compared to some of the newer bigger sets. It is still a sizable model, particularly when fully extended. Anyone familiar with the previous sets, will recognise the build, and that is where the enjoyment is, yet not so easy that it won’t offer an enjoyable challenge to those who are new to or wanting to get into Technic looking for something more.

Looking at the product on line, my thoughts were an easy build. Looks nice, not complicated. This would be my first crane build.I am a Technics enthusiast. I also prefer numbered bags. Before I invest in a product, I look at the U-tube video to see if the bags are numbered. The bags are numbered. The instruction manual contains 265 pages.I learned a valuable lesson during this build. On page 19, a red diagram which draws your attention to the joining of 4 seperate builds also gets you to focus on lining up other pieces. I concentrated so much here that I did not pay attention if items outside the red diagram are also in the correct order. This later resulted in a total disememble of everything and start afresh again.I was at best not happy.Overall I enjoyed the build, challenging, tricky, well worth it if you like this type of product.I had time on my side, no need to rush. This is not a motorized product. Works manually. Once completed, I for some reason did not expect features to operate.A sigh of relief passed over me when I turned the dials, the boom extended, swiviveled 360 degrees.I highly recommend this product no 42108. Well worth it.

I have a love for crane's, and I have operated some. So when I built the outriggers, and saw how small they were I was a little disappointed. I knew then it would not be able to lift much weight. Especially over the side without tipping over. I do love the overall design of the crane and how it works. But I had to modify it to pick up more weight than the little pilon in the set. I wanted to pick up my little fishing boat and rescue plane. What I did to be able to do so. Was fill the empty space where the counter weights are with Lego bricks. I was able to fit about 130Grams of bricks in the empty space. This made a big improvement in its lifting capabilities but I wanted more.So I made a block about 800g and hung it off the back of the counter weights. Wow this made a huge difference. Now it plays with both my boat and plane. I thinking about trying to figure out how to make the outriggers go out to make a wider stance. And I want larger block and tackle on the winch line.

I admit I bought this for my 5 year old grandson, thinking that he would have fun with it once built, and I wanted to try building something a bit more challenging. The challenge was increased by the enthusiastic assistance of my grandson, who frequently decided to put pieces together to make his own creations, after which he didn't want to give them up for the actual build. I tried working on it in the evening after he was in bed, but by then I was too tired to concentrate and twice found myself cursing Lego for errors in the instructions before realizing I was just reading them incorrectly. Sigh. Once complete however, my expectations were realized. He greatly enjoys it and all the little features built in (he loves that he can steer it!), and I enjoyed the sense of accomplishment once it was all together and working properly (much to my surprise - and my wife). A great toy and worth the price. Now.... if only the excavator was the same price!

I wavered between 4 and 5* for this. First up - it looks fantastic and beautifully proportioned, and the steering that everyone raves about is very nicely done. But there are a few things that could be tweaked: 1) the stabilizers need to be bigger (I'm going to see if I can fix this myself), and the mechanism for the front ones isn't especially smooth. 2) the "stoppers" that prevent the crane mechanism from spinning back when under a load need to be stiffer, they can easily fall down. 3) with the crane swung to the side, the weight limit is quite light, though front on it's pretty good (I lifted the Lego snowplough very easily). 4) (and this may be me rather than the design),I have found it hard to keep the pulley from spinning the thread round. Overall, though, despite these weaknesses, the look and feel, the playability and the value still make this a 5* kit - it didn't even take that long to build.

I hadn't built a Technics set for some 33 years (model 8865, pictured below, which I still have!) which was advanced even for a Lego crazy kid that I was.In a moment of lockdown evening boredom (and maybe having consumed an alcoholic beverage or two) I ordered this set.Well it's certainly moved on a bit since 8865 that's for sure! It's an impressive bit of kit. Far more technical than I was expecting but it all made sense in a way that Lego just 'does'. A few moments of head scratching but it all went together well, and I'm still absolutely rubbish at applying stickers to Lego (even my four year old son was better at it with his Lego City Goldmine set). It's a great looking build too and realistic looking. To sum up.An enjoyable build. Not too tricky. Great looking piece.

As a child I was a fan of Lego but we never really had the money to buy much, and of course in those days it was mostly just standard bricks, you were lucky if you had sloping parts for making a roof...A couple of years ago my wife bought me a Lego Technic Rally Car, and so my love of Lego was reborn. With some Christmas and Birthday money I looked around for an interesting model, and found this one at a lower price than if purchased direct from Lego. It was a great build, over three evenings, and had plenty of technical aspects with three separate geared controllers for the crane, plus eight wheel steering.Beside being such a fun build, the finished model looks good and is a great size. It's a very welcome addition to my growing Lego Technic collection.

I have not touched LEGO for more than 20 years. Completely forgot about its existence. Was an absolute delight to rediscover my old passion for building. This set was brilliant for me to see how much the LEGO technic has developed over those years. Got it on a discount 59£ for 1292 pieces was a must-have. The set presents the basics of gearing and a variety of mesmerizing motions. 4 wheel steering is weirdly satisfying to experience. Even my girlfriend was so fascinated by the design and how much fun it was to build. Quoting her "It is the best toy I have ever seen".Thank you to LEGO for the awesome experience and to Amazon for appealing prices. Now we are hooked up and will come back for more complex sets.

This was purchased for my 9-year-old son birthday. The best price was on Amazon and ordered in plenty of time, turned up on his birthday and he was over the moon.it took us about 5 hours to build and we both fully enjoyed building it together and he loves showing it off to his friends and family, ok currently via Zoom/WhatsApp/etc...I have always been a fan of Lego/Technic Lego over other similar manufactures of this type of product. the instructions are good and Lego has now done an app. The app makes doing some of the trick parts easier as you can zoom in/out and rotate the product around.for what we paid for it (£60 delivered) it was a real bargain, 1962 pieces of original Lego.

LEGO has such a fantastic quality toys and they constantly innovate and bring out new designs. This is one of them. Huge set - crane.I would recommend this set to bigger kids as technic needs good hand coordination and good understanding of instructions (as if you get 1 thing wrong noting else will fall into place). Also I would not recommend buying technics before standard Lego has been introduced and mastered as it's kind a another higher level of constructions.Beside that highly recommended as great set!Can be given for any ocassion or totally without one, the kids will be happy ?

Lego is one of the top range toy for kids to play, it helps kids to practice to build up and to think and design how to build up.My nephew and neace age 3 and 4, theuy really like to play the with those Lego to build up different sharp of structure by what they image. They are so excited when I brought it back and they are trying to build about 20 mins, all come up with their own creation. So I decide to help them up, even follow the instruction, it almost take me a half day to build it.Its a perfect toy and gift for kids, but ideal for what they suggest for age 10 and plus.
